After being taken away, the children were placed with other families, often those running farms or social institutions. While some managed to find new, happy homes, others ended up in abusive conditions where they were treated as cheap labor, with some even being sexually assaulted or sterilized.

Swiss authorities acknowledged its role the controversial relocations in 2013 after years of campaigning by victims. Parliament voted in favor of compensating those affected three years later.

In January, the first 366 victims will receive compensation of up to 25,000 francs, the Swiss Justice Office said in a statement. The initial payments will be handed over to those of “very old age” or suffering from diseases, it added.

The less urgent cases will be reviewed after that, it said, adding, that many applicants will likely get their money earlier than expected. According to the government’s estimations, around 15,000 ‘contract children’ who “suffered injustice that has had lifelong consequences,” are currently alive and eligible for reparation.

However, the Justice Office has so far received only 4,310 claims, and with the deadline to apply expiring on March 31, 2018, the full number is unlikely to be met.

Compensation funding is provided by the Swiss government, but eight cantons and 20 communes also contributed after being encouraged to do so by Bern, a statement said.

Nurse forcibly arrested for not allowing cop to draw blood of unconscious patient (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/nurse-forcibly-arrested-for-not-allowing-cop-to-draw-blood-of-unconscious-patient-video/ https://briefnews.eu/nurse-forcibly-arrested-for-not-allowing-cop-to-draw-blood-of-unconscious-patient-video/#respond Fri, 01 Sep 2017 03:42:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nurse-forcibly-arrested-for-not-allowing-cop-to-draw-blood-of-unconscious-patient-video/ Bodycam video shows a Salt Lake City police detective grabbing a frightened nurse and twisting her arm before handcuffing her at University Hospital, all because she cited policy not allowing him to draw blood from an unconscious patient.

“I’m just trying to do what I’m supposed to do,” nurse Alex Wubbels explained to Detective Jeff Payne on July 26. Video of her violent arrest was released by the Salt Lake Tribune late Thursday.

Payne lost his temper when Wubbels wouldn’t comply with his demand to take a blood sample from an unconscious patient who had been the victim of an explosive car accident that occurred at the end of a high-speed police pursuit of another man.

Wubbels is seen in Payne’s bodycam footage holding a piece of paper in one hand and a cell phone in the other. On the line was a man named Brad, presumably a hospital employee or administrator, whom Wubbels wanted to hear the interaction with Payne.

Wubbels read aloud the document’s heading: “obtaining blood samples for police enforcement from patients suspected to be under the influence.”

The hospital policy forbids drawing blood from an unconscious patient, unless there is prior consent, a warrant or the patient is under arrest.

“This is something that you guys agreed to with this hospital,” the nurse told Payne. “I’m just trying to do what I’m supposed to do. That’s all.”

“So I take it, without those in place, I’m not going to get blood. Am I fair to surmise that?” Payne asks rhetorically.

The tension builds when from Wubbels’s phone, Brad is heard saying, “Alex, you’re not representing the University Hospital,” to which the nurse responds with her voice breaking, “I have no idea why he’s blaming me.”

“Why are you blaming the messenger, sir?” Brad asks the detective.

“She’s the one that has told me, no,” Payne answers.

“You’re making a huge mistake right now, because you’re threatening a nurse,” Brad says, and at that moment, Payne becomes fed up and reaches for Wubbels’s cellphone.

“No, we’re done, you’re under arrest,” Payne says, as he pulls the nurse’s arm behind her back, forcing her outside of the hospital.

By this point, Wubbels is screaming in pain and fear. Other hospital workers try in vain to calm the situation, telling the officer an administrator is on the way to the hospital.

“She can sit in my car while they’re coming,” the detective says.

A worker is heard saying, “This is unnecessary, man,” to which Payne responds, “You’re right.”

Wubbels has an attorney and claims Payne assaulted and illegally arrested her, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. But no complaint or lawsuit has been filed.

Payne has since been temporarily suspended from the Salt Lake City Police Department’s blood-draw program. Sgt. Brandon Shearer says an internal investigation is ongoing.

Other video footage exists, according to the Tribune. It was shown Thursday at a news conference at the office of City Attorney Karra Porter, who is representing Wubbels. The newspaper reported that other video shows Wubbels being placed in a squad car.

“It hurts to relive it,” Wubbels said at the news conference, the Tribune reported.

She claims to have never actually told Payne “no,” but only to have explained the policy.

The unconscious patient is identified as 43-year-old William Gray in Payne’s police report.

Gray was driving a semi-truck on July 26 when a suspect, fleeing Logan, Utah police in a hot pursuit, swerved and slammed his pickup truck into Gray, igniting an explosion that left Gray burned. The suspect, Marco Torres, died at the scene. Video of the collision was posted by the Tribune.

Gray remains in serious condition at University Hospital, officials told the Tribune.

‘Marines out!’ Japanese police forcibly remove anti-US base sit-in in Okinawa (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/marines-out-japanese-police-forcibly-remove-anti-us-base-sit-in-in-okinawa-video/ https://briefnews.eu/marines-out-japanese-police-forcibly-remove-anti-us-base-sit-in-in-okinawa-video/#respond Thu, 13 Jul 2017 18:00:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/marines-out-japanese-police-forcibly-remove-anti-us-base-sit-in-in-okinawa-video/

Police have forcibly removed protesters staging a sit-in outside the US Marine Corps’ Camp Schwab in Okinawa in a campaign to protest the relocation of the Futenma base.

The US Marine Corps Futenma Air Station is going to be moved from the densely populated Ginowan to a less populated location in eastern Okinawa – the Henoko coastal area of Nago.

Using rocks and gravel intended for the construction of the base, protesters reportedly refused to let trucks pass, blocking the way near the neighboring US Marine Corps base Camp Schwab.

“Marines out!” and “Stop illegal work,” the demonstrators’ posters read.

The video, released by Ruptly video news agency, shows sumo-esque scuffles between police and protesters, and security forces dragging demonstrators by their arms and legs.

The offshore construction work started in February despite strong opposition from locals, who regularly stage large-scale protests with thousands of people. Okinawa Governor Takeshi Onaga is among those who object to the heavy US military presence on the island, saying that the Futenma base should be removed, not relocated.

The plan is to build a new US Marines base over the coming five years on the island of Okinawa, something that the local governor, Takeshi Onaga, and the public are at odds with.

Onaga is against the relocation, stating it would destroy the environment of the bay surrounding the new base site.

On Tuesday, an Okinawa Prefectural Assembly committee asked for legal action against damage to fishing grounds caused by the relocation, and the entire assembly is set to cast their votes on the issue on Friday. If the resolution passes, legal proceedings against the government in Tokyo could begin next week.

There are around100,000 US military personnel in Japan, and half of them are in Okinawa, according to the official website of the US Forces Japan.

The US presence in the country has been a hot topic with the Japanese public, who cite jet crashes related to the US bases and sexual assaults linked to US military personnel as causes for objection.

‘Infuriated’ United pilots union slams cops for forcibly dragging passenger from plane (UAL) https://briefnews.eu/infuriated-united-pilots-union-slams-cops-for-forcibly-dragging-passenger-from-plane-ual/ https://briefnews.eu/infuriated-united-pilots-union-slams-cops-for-forcibly-dragging-passenger-from-plane-ual/#respond Thu, 13 Apr 2017 22:38:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/infuriated-united-pilots-union-slams-cops-for-forcibly-dragging-passenger-from-plane-ual/ united airlines planeFlickr/aero_icarus

On Thursday, United Airlines’ pilots broke their silence on the violent removal of David Dao from Flight 3411.

“The safety and well-being of our passengers is the highest priority for United pilots, and this should not have escalated into a violent encounter,” United Master Executive Council, the union representing the airline’s 12,500 pilots, wrote in a letter.

“United pilots are infuriated by this event.”

At the same time, the pilots wanted to the set record straight on some of the facts surrounding the event.

“This occurred on one of our contracted Express carriers, separately owned and operated by Republic Airline, and was ultimately caused by the grossly inappropriate response by the Chicago Department of Aviation,” the pilots wrote.

The disturbing incident and its accompanying cellphone footage has placed the Chicago-based airline at the center of an avalanche of anger, criticism, and ridicule.

The public fury was further stoked by a pair of poorly worded statements from CEO Oscar Munoz. Munoz did not issue a true apology to Dao until days later.

On Thursday, the airline promised to make significant changes at the airline along with a sweeping review of the policies governing customer relations, employee training, and the handling of oversold flights.

United has committed to refrain from involving law enforcement in the removal passengers from flights unless “it is a matter of safety and security.”

Here is the statement from United Airlines’ pilots in its entirety:

“As the story of United Express Flight 3411, operated by Republic Airline, continues to virally circulate in the news and on social media, your United Master Executive Council (MEC) has intentionally withheld judgment because of the rapid pace at which information, both accurate and inaccurate, has been released and manipulated.

The safety and well-being of our passengers is the highest priority for United pilots, and this should not have escalated into a violent encounter. United pilots are infuriated by this event. This occurred on one of our contracted Express carriers, separately owned and operated by Republic Airline, and was ultimately caused by the grossly inappropriate response by the Chicago Department of Aviation.

It is important to review these baseline facts:

1.      This violent incident should never have happened and was a result of gross excessive force by Chicago Department of Aviation personnel.

2.      No United employees were involved in the physical altercation.

3.      Social media ire should properly be directed at the Chicago Aviation Department.

4.      This occurred on an Express flight operated by Republic Airline, as such, the flight crew and cabin crew of Flight 3411 are employees of Republic Airline, not United Airlines.

5.      United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz has apologized for United Airlines, the actions of the Chicago Department of Aviation, and the actions of our Express partner, Republic Airline.

On April 9, 2017, United Express Flight 3411, operated by Republic, was preparing to depart Chicago O’Hare (ORD) to Louisville (SDF). Republic Airline made the decision to assign four of their crewmembers to deadhead on Flight 3411 within minutes of the scheduled departure. Although four passengers would have to be removed from this flight to accommodate the Republic crew, the goal was to get the other 70 passengers on their way to SDF and ensure a flight crew needed the next day would also be in place. By all reports, the Republic flight crew was courteous and calm throughout the event, and three passengers left the flight voluntarily for compensation. After repeatedly asking the fourth passenger to give up his seat to no avail, the gate agent requested the assistance of law enforcement.

For reasons unknown to us, instead of trained Chicago Police Department officers being dispatched to the scene, Chicago Department of Aviation personnel responded. At this point, without direction and outside the control of United Airlines or the Republic crew, the Chicago Department of Aviation forcibly removed the passenger.

Members of local airport law enforcement are normally important security partners who assist aircrews in ensuring the safety of everyone on the airplane. This event was an anomaly and is not how United or the police are expected to treat passengers when there is no security threat.

United pilots have always been the true leaders of this company, and our fellow employees count on us to continue to do what we do best—deliver a world class product and safely transport our passengers around the world. We cannot let this huge distraction affect our ability to do our jobs. We have successfully flown through more turbulent times, and we will weather this storm as well.

Ultimately, United must be measured by more than this one incident on a single United Express flight; this airline is comprised of more than 82,000 employees, including over 12,500 pilots, working every day to safely fly around the globe. For 91 years, United has earned the trust of millions of passengers, and we will continue earning their trust, despite the incident on this United Express flight. The United Airlines MEC is confident that the steps we are taking as a company will ensure this type of inexcusable event never happens again.”

Who Are the Security Officers That Forcibly Dragged a United Airlines Passenger? https://briefnews.eu/who-are-the-security-officers-that-forcibly-dragged-a-united-airlines-passenger/ https://briefnews.eu/who-are-the-security-officers-that-forcibly-dragged-a-united-airlines-passenger/#respond Tue, 11 Apr 2017 21:40:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/who-are-the-security-officers-that-forcibly-dragged-a-united-airlines-passenger/

The videos depicting security officers forcibly dragging an elderly United Airlines passenger in Chicago have drawn outrage that is both widespread and entirely justified. Most of the resulting news coverage has focused, correctly, on United’s tone-deaf response and the larger question of how much power airlines wield over our lives. Certain news outlets, however, decided to go in a different direction. Instead of investigating the security officers depicted in the videos—and, perhaps, those officers’ supervisors—these outlets have focused on the passenger.

The victim, a 69-year-old Kentucky doctor named David Dao, was quickly identified thanks to the reporting of a local Louisville paper, The Courier-Journal, whose editors decided to publish sordid details from Dao’s past, based on publicly available court records. Outlets like The Daily Mail, The New York Post, TMZ, and The Wrap later aggregated the paper’s coverage. The editor of the Courier-Journal defended his newsroom in an interview with The New Republic by arguing that Dao was “familiar to people in the local market” and imploring his critics “to make sure they’re commenting on [his paper’s coverage of Dao] with full context and perspective.”

Meanwhile, the identities of Dao’s assailants remain unknown. Their employer, the Chicago Department of Aviation, refused to name any of them in a press release announcing that one of them had been placed on leave. Despite the agency’s evasiveness, and the fact that their employees’ actions were captured on video, a significant number of news outlets decided that it was the victim—not the perpetrators—who deserved the bulk of their coverage.

We’ve asked the Chicago Department of Aviation for the names of the involved security officers, and will update this post if we hear back. In the meantime, if you know their names—or any details of their backgrounds—please get in touch.

A man was removed off the United Airlines flight from Chicago to Louisville.

The flight was overbooked and the US carrier chose four passengers at random – who had already boarded the plane – to get off.

When this passenger refused to leave his seat, three security officers dragged him away.

Fellow passengers filmed the shocking incident and uploaded the footage to social media.

Originally posted on Facebook by Audra Bridges, the clip has been viewed more than 475,000 times.

Audra wrote: “We are on this flight. United Airlines overbooked the flight. They randomly selected people to kick off so their standby crew could have a seat.

“This man is a doctor and has to be at the hospital in the morning. He did not want to get off. We are all shaky and so disgusted.”

Other passengers could be heard screaming in the dramatic video, with some gasping “Oh my God” and “Look at what you did to him”.

The man’s head could be seen slamming against one of the arm rests as he was flung out of his seat.

With a bleeding nose, he was dragged by his arms down the aisle – seemingly unconscious by this point – as his shirt rode up above him.

At one point the man somehow made it back onto the plane briefly, repeating that he had to get home to see patients the following day.

United Airlines confirmed the incident occurred. A spokesperson told Express.co.uk: “Flight 3411 from Chicago to Louisville was overbooked.

“After our team looked for volunteers, one customer refused to leave the aircraft voluntarily and law enforcement was asked to come to the gate.

“We apologize for the overbook situation. Further details on the removed customer should be directed to authorities.”

According to fellow passenger Audra, the four people were asked to get off the flight so that airline staff could board, because they needed to work on a flight from Louisville the following day.

Volunteers were offered $ 800 (£644) and a night in a hotel if they gave up their seat to fly the next day instead.

Just two weeks ago, United Airlines was slammed for banning pasengers from a flight because they were wearing leggings.

According to a person who says they were on the flight, the airline needed room on the overbooked aircraft to reposition crew for another flight. But when it couldn’t find enough volunteers, even after offering $ 800, the airline selected the man, who is a doctor, and several other passengers to deplane.

The video quickly made its way around the internet and social media.

In a statement to Business Insider, United Airlines said:

We apologize for the overbook situation. Further details on the removed customer should be directed to authorities.”
