  • There are hundreds of underground nuclear missiles across Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming, North Dakota, and Montana.
  • The US Air Force says wind turbines can't be constructed within a 2-mile radius of these missiles.
  • Due to underground missiles, a wind turbine project in Banner County, Nebraska, was limited in scope.

In Nebraska's Banner County, the remains of Cold War America are buried right below the surface.

During the 1960s, when the US was locked in a nuclear stalemate with the then-Soviet Union, it began planting hundreds of nuclear missiles across rural swaths of the country like Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming, North Dakota and Montana in case it needed to shoot them into the enemy camp at a given moment.

Now, those missiles are preventing the region from harnessing its most valuable resource: strong, gusty winds.

The Flat Water Free Press, an independent news outlet in Nebraska, reported last week that in 2019, the US Air Force began to thwart a wind turbine project in the state's southwest Banner County.

Two renewable energy companies, Invenergy and Orion Renewable Energy Group, had singled out Banner for its "world class winds," the Flat Water Free Press reported. They were ready to construct a combined 300 turbines across the region.

Each turbine would have brought in an additional $ 15,000 in annual income to the landowner whose property it would be built on. The capital from the turbines would have flushed into Banner's school system and revitalized the 625-person county.

But the Air Force contended that the turbines would pose a "significant safety hazard" to pilots — especially during storms or blizzards. The Air Force decided that the turbines needed to be constructed 2.3 miles away from each other to ensure that pilots had enough space to land without potentially digging their wheels into a missile. Until then, a quarter mile between each turbine was had been sufficient.

"The new guidelines, explained to residents earlier this spring, significantly cut the number of possible turbines that could be constructed."

Banner's residents have been left frustrated and disillusioned by the Air Force's new guidelines. "This resource is just there, ready to be used," one Banner landowner said. ""How do we walk away from that?"

  • Climate change and soaring energy prices could make widespread blackouts more common, even in wealthy nations.
  • Californians narrowly averted statewide blackouts, and Britons impacted by the war in Ukraine will soon pay nearly double for electricity.
  • As energy costs soar higher, a new age of rolling outages and grid instability looms large.

Stock up on batteries, candles, and non-perishable snacks. Blackouts are coming.

For the first time in decades, the western world is preparing for widespread and rolling energy shortages. The US, UK, and EU have all been squeezed by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, soaring costs for electricity and fuel, and record-breaking heat waves. While fall is just around the corner, the worst of the energy strain is likely still to come.

Even wealthy nations won't be spared, at least without broad broad policy change and private-sector overhauls. Add in the accompanying economic costs and extreme health risks, and you have a very difficult situation.

In California, it will materialize as outage warnings and restrictions on your air conditioning. Then in coming years, Texans, Illinoisans, and Missourians will join the suffering of their west coast peers amid sweltering heat and rolling blackouts.

And across Europe and the UK, residents not used to heat waves will either face skyrocketing energy bills or dangerously hot summers — a situation made worse by their reliance on Russian gas, the flow of which has been essentially cut off entirely.

In the US, climate change risks decades of 'extreme danger'

Amid record-high temperatures on the west coast Tuesday afternoon, California's grid operator ISO urged residents to limit their energy use and cautioned that rolling blackouts could arrive.

REDDIT SCREENSHOT
A screenshot posted on Reddit of California's energy alert.

The text alert worked. Emergency precautions lifted at 8 pm PT without the need for widespread blackouts. The utility added that residents' energy conservation "played a big part" in bolstering the grid's reliability.

The relief was short-lived. Just 15 hours later, the ISO issued another alert calling on residents to use less energy throughout the afternoon. Californians were encouraged to avoid using large appliances, unplug unused electronics, and set their thermostats no lower than 78 degrees.

"I can't keep doing this," Twitter user @sdfashionista3 wrote in response to the ISO on Thursday morning. "Been in San Diego my entire life never seen the temp this high at night even during a Santa Ana."

And while the ISO's Tuesday alert helped stave off rolling blackouts, more than 50,000 Californians experienced some form of a power outage that afternoon, according to data from poweroutage.us.

The strain on California's power grid can be traced directly to climate change. Average temperatures have risen faster than residents' heat tolerance, meaning Californians are running their air conditioning significantly longer than they did just years ago. Yet utilities companies and regulators haven't bolstered the power grid accordingly, and soaring demand for electricity has pushed that infrastructure to the edge.

"Fossil-fuel based electricity has traditionally been seen as the most reliable," Romany Webb, an associate research scholar at Columbia Law School and senior fellow at the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law, told Insider. "But the combination of gas being in shorter supply and more expensive, combined with these climate impacts, highlight that that's really no longer the case."

The alerts, while helpful on Tuesday, underscore the looming threat facing California and other states with hotter climates. Roughly 8 million Americans are already expected to experience temperatures above 125 degrees in 2022, levels deemed to pose "extreme danger," according to the National Weather Service. That count is expected to reach 107 million people in 2053 as climate change powers higher and higher temperatures, according to new research from First Street Foundation.

California won't be alone. All of Illinois and Missouri are set to feature 125 degree days by 2053, the foundation found. Parts of 23 other states will land in the belt.

Without massive investment in overhauling the country's energy grid, such heat waves could knock out power across states for days on end. That endangers millions who can't afford to cool down with a generator or a pool. A lack of power will also lead to widespread food spoilage as freezers and refrigerators shut down.

Countless business owners will be forced to close up shop, and those staying open won't get much traffic as Americans focus on beating the heat.

Americans requiring powered medical devices will be in the most immediate danger, especially as blackouts can come at a moment's notice.

"If we don't accelerate our action to mitigate climate change and prepare for the climate change that's already happening, we're likely to see more of these outages and have a less reliable grid," Webb said.

Europe's decoupling from Russian energy presents an impossible choice

The EU and UK's energy problem has far more to do with their dependence on Russia. While the US can largely rely on its own energy commodities for power despite its struggles with its antiquated electric grid, western Europe leans heavily on Moscow for its natural gas and crude oil to keep prices steady.

The relationship, while rocky, lasted for several decades. That ended when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022 and sparked intense backlash from the West. The EU and UK quickly levied sanctions on Russia's energy sector, unveiling plans to quickly reduce their purchases of Russian goods and find those commodities elsewhere.

The pivot hasn't been an easy one. Western Europe has struggled with energy shortages throughout the year, and summer heat exacerbated the problem. Crippling heat waves emerged in the UK, Spain, Portugal, and France, with all-time-high temperatures causing large wildfires and thousands of deaths.

The hot spell was particularly dangerous because many affected countries "are not really trained to deal with the heat," George Havenith, Professor of Environmental Physiology and Ergonomics of Loughborough University, recently told Insider.

The heat wave has since eased somewhat, but Russia's retaliation to energy embargoes kicked off a new stage of pain. The UK and EU haven't fully weaned themselves off of Russian gas yet, leaving energy in shorter supply as the Kremlin cuts off westward flows.

That's left residents paying up for their everyday power needs. Britain's energy regulator lifted its cap on annual energy bills to £3,549 — about $ 4,189 — starting October 1, nearly doubling the previous limit and up 178% from last winter.

The hike presents low-income Britons with an impossible choice: go into debt to maintain their basic energy use, or endure a blazing hot summer and frigid winter rife with blackouts and health hazards.

Immediate solutions are few and far between, but as climate change rages on, the impetus to reinforce electrical grids with renewable power and efficient energy storage grows stronger.

"Unless we recognize the serious risks that climate change poses to our electrical system, we're likely to see more of these reliability issues," Webb said. "It's imperative that regulators, electric utilities, and system operators recognize that climate change is here."

‘Society doesn’t force medical treatment on people’ Prof Van Tam on vaccine passports https://briefnews.eu/society-doesnt-force-medical-treatment-on-people-prof-van-tam-on-vaccine-passports/ https://briefnews.eu/society-doesnt-force-medical-treatment-on-people-prof-van-tam-on-vaccine-passports/#respond Wed, 24 Feb 2021 19:06:18 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/society-doesnt-force-medical-treatment-on-people-prof-van-tam-on-vaccine-passports/

Jonathan Van-Tam was asked during his Good Morning Britain appearance whether he believes the UK should introduce documents that prove vaccinations so sectors of the country can reopen. Some campaigners have shown opposition to the coronavirus vaccine passports as an assault on individual liberty and a way to force people to have the vaccine through a backdoor. Professor Van-Tam argued the UK does not force people to take any medical treatments in a statement that indicates the government advisor might be sceptical about their rollout.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, host Piers Morgan asked Prof Van-Tam: “Is it morally justified for a government to say, for example, that if you want to go into restaurants or gyms or bars or nightclubs, to get them back open again.

“To recharge the economy, then you have to show, as they’re now doing in Israel, they’re now showing a vaccine certificate.

“Do you support that, do you think there’s a moral issue in telling people you’ve got to show a bit of paper to show you’ve been vaccinated before you can have your freedom fully back?”

The Professor replied: “I think the government’s announced that it’s going to look at this and look at the whole area in quite some detail.

JUST IN: Nicola Sturgeon re-election at risk as new poll indicates a drop in SNP popularity

“And it wouldn’t be right of me to comment, at that point, other than to say I think they are plausible arguments and there are plausible arguments for and plausible arguments against.

“But we’ve never lived in a society here where we force medical treatments on people.”

Earlier in his interview, Prof Van-Tam said it was likely to see Covid resurge in winter much like flu or other infectious diseases.

He explained the virus would evolve to infect humans better depending on the seasons.

In an interview earlier this week, Prime Minister Boris Johnson revealed a task force was looking into vaccine passports and the ethics behind using them.

The review, led by Cabinet Minister Michael Gove, will look at whether their use would be effective to reopen some areas of the UK and control the spread of COVID-19.

The Government is investigating whether an app, similar to Test and Trace, could be used.

DON’T MISS

The Prime Minister added it was likely to see vaccine passports rolled out for international travel as some countries have been pushing for their introduction.

Greece has been pushing for the documents as a way to reopen its tourism sector and will urge the EU to implement them at a meeting later this week.

Campaigners are worried the vaccination passports may discriminate against those from third-world countries who would be prevented from travelling since their vaccination programmes are not as advanced.

Cobra Kai EPs Talk [Spoiler]’s Overdue Return and How the Reunion Was ‘the Force’ Johnny Needed to Move Forward https://briefnews.eu/cobra-kai-eps-talk-spoilers-overdue-return-and-how-the-reunion-was-the-force-johnny-needed-to-move-forward/ https://briefnews.eu/cobra-kai-eps-talk-spoilers-overdue-return-and-how-the-reunion-was-the-force-johnny-needed-to-move-forward/#respond Sun, 03 Jan 2021 15:43:28 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/cobra-kai-eps-talk-spoilers-overdue-return-and-how-the-reunion-was-the-force-johnny-needed-to-move-forward/ A major Karate Kid character has finally made her Cobra Kai debut.

Season 3 of the martial arts dramedy hit Netflix Friday, and along with it came the return of a Miyagi-verse favorite. Elisabeth Shue’s Ali Mills, a former love interest of both Johnny and Daniel’s, returned to the Valley to reconnect with her exes, offering an outsider’s perspective and a bit of wisdom that helped squash the lingering tension between the two senseis.

Her return was highly teased in the series’ second season, which ended with Ali sending Johnny a friend request on Facebook. But in Episode 9 of the latest run, Shue appeared at last, arriving just in time to unite the former nemeses so they can begin preparing for the bigger battle ahead: taking down John Kreese and Cobra Kai once and for all.

Here, TVLine talks to executive producers and co-showrunners Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg about how they kept Shue’s appearance mum, why Season 3 was the perfect time to bring her back, and why Ali became “the force that brings Daniel and Johnny together.”

Cobra Kai Season 3 Ali MillsTVLINE | How were you able to keep Elisabeth’s return such a well-guarded secret?
HEALD |
We just threatened everybody! [Laughs] We discussed with all of the performers: ‘Do not post anything to social media, do not comment to your friends or loved ones. Please keep this secret.’ We had [everyone] sign pretty strict non-disclosure agreements with unspecified consequences — I have no idea what they were — but it was enough that it worked, apparently. We also just led with a big warm hug of like, ‘Hey, look around and see how special this is. Imagine how special it will be if people can discover it as a surprise.’ We operate like that with a lot of storylines on this show. We’re probably annoying to work with on some level for the marketing department because we’re always asking for the splashiest and sexiest moments to be left out of the marketing campaign entirely.

But we hark back to that age where there wasn’t an internet. You weren’t bombarded with new clips every day and first look pictures, and the barrage of material that now has become commonplace and necessary to pull in an audience in such a fragmented world. We remember going to the movies and discovering something for the first time that wasn’t in the trailer or commercial, and how magical that was. That’s harder to pull off these days, but that doesn’t mean we won’t keep trying to do that.

TVLINE | I’d imagine it was similar to the big Season 1 finale reveal?
HEALD |
We did it with Kreese in the first season. Martin Kove is one of the great champions of the show, and we love that, but that whole first season, there were a lot of therapeutic phone calls of asking him to please not say anything. The moment it’s discovered, it will be an explosion, and you’ll be able to talk about it forever because people will want to. It’ll just be that much bigger. So that was the test balloon, I would say, for keeping the secret with Ali.

TVLINE | Were there ever any plans to bring her in at the very beginning? Why wait until Season 3 to re-introduce Ali?
SCHLOSSBERG |
We reached out to [Shue] somewhere during Season 2, after there was a show she could see. We knew she was aware of the show, and had seen it and liked it. We had good vibes about the potential of being able to work with her when the time was right. For the fanbase that is following this story, the hardcore fans, it’s such a big moment to bring her into the story, so we really wanted it to be perfect.

We didn’t know 100 percent if we would get her because there’s all sorts of external factors that could happen. But as soon as we got the greenlight to do Season 3, it was one of the first things we discussed with Sony and our casting. We really wanted to make sure that she would be there at the end of the season, and everything worked out the way you’d hope it would when it came time to getting that whole deal done.

TVLINE | Using social media in the storyline starting in Season 2 seemed like the perfect way to tease her return.
SCHLOSSBERG |
From the very beginning we loved the idea of playing her character, at first, through the eyes of Johnny looking at her life through social media. That’s something we felt a lot of people could relate to when it comes to old flames and friends from the past. We knew that Johnny was interested in her and we loved the idea of him seeing her on Facebook and seeing her life which is seemingly perfect. But then when you do meet her at the end of the season, it’s not all roses. She’s dealing with her own issues, and that was the story we pitched to her that I think she got interested in, and something that is relatable to a lot of people. The grass is always greener when you’re seeing somebody’s life on social media, and it leads to a lot of comedy, but also some real moments with them. Ultimately, of course, it was just poetic having her be the force that brings Daniel and Johnny together at the end of the season.

Cobra Kai Season 3 Johnny AliTVLINE | Let’s talk a bit about Ali’s effect on Johnny. I love the line when she tells him, “You have a future to find,” as if she’s championing his future. What did he learn from her and why did he need that reunion?
HURWITZ |
Johnny’s life has been a mess for so long. He’s a guy who has self-sabotaged at times in his life, so to be at this place where he’s starting to connect with a woman and have the anxiety of like, ‘OK, I might get involved with someone in a serious way, [and it’s] the mother of my top karate student/surrogate son figure,’ there’s the typical jitters. He’s clearly been hung up on Ali for all these years in one way or another, so to be able to see her again and get a little taste of the past with her, but also perspective of adult life, it’s strong for him not only on the side of his love life, but also in terms of LaRusso and the approach with Daniel.

Her involvement in those scenes with Johnny and Daniel at the country club ends up causing these two guys who can’t seem to take a moment to reflect on their own roles and whatever issues they may have to perhaps realize that maybe they’re not so different after all. Even though she hasn’t seen them in so many years, just getting to spend a little bit of time with them again and be reminded of who they were in high school, she recognizes that maybe she could give them both a little bit of wisdom that can help them move forward.

TVLINE | The scene at Golf N’ Stuff when Johnny and Ali are on the bench outside: Why did you stop short of having them kiss?
HEALD | We went back and forth on that almost-kiss and we came really close to maybe saying it could’ve been a real kiss. Ultimately, we wanted to preserve that moment on the steps when she helps Johnny realize that his life makes sense with Carmen in it, and we didn’t want to feel like he needed to have a little bit of a dalliance to get there. It was more of an emotional connection [with Ali] than a physical one. That should be the takeaway there.

TVLINE | With Cobra Kai already renewed for a fourth season, is there any chance we’ll see Ali again?
HEALD | We won’t comment on what our future plans are with anybody who’s a legacy character from those movies other than to say that we have a long story left to tell. We always leave the door wide open for anybody from the Miyagi-verse to come in and out of the series.

This Is Us’ Justin Hartley Weighs In on Kevin and Madison’s Insta-Family: ‘You Can’t Really Force Love’ https://briefnews.eu/this-is-us-justin-hartley-weighs-in-on-kevin-and-madisons-insta-family-you-cant-really-force-love/ https://briefnews.eu/this-is-us-justin-hartley-weighs-in-on-kevin-and-madisons-insta-family-you-cant-really-force-love/#respond Wed, 30 Dec 2020 22:38:54 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/this-is-us-justin-hartley-weighs-in-on-kevin-and-madisons-insta-family-you-cant-really-force-love/

RELATED STORIES

Justin Hartley was shooting This Is Us in New York City, in the cold last winter, when he got the good news: He was going to be an (onscreen) dad.

Series creator Dan Fogelman told Hartley and co-star Sterling K. Brown while “we were in the middle of a scene,” Hartley recalls. What would follow — Kevin and Madison’s one-night-stand that turned into two-very-real-babies — is “an amazing story,” he says. “I love the fact that it’s not your traditional ‘get married, have kids and then struggle with raising them.’”

Yet even the eternally sunny Kevin Pearson wouldn’t be able to ignore the fact that Madison and Kev aren’t exactly each other’s soulmate — at least, not yet. “It’s sort of an odd pairing, and they’re trying to make it work,” he notes. “They have an affection toward one another, but I don’t know how deep it is yet.”

When the NBC drama returns Tuesday (9/8c), its first 2021 episode will deal directly with that very question. (In a promo, Madison reminds Kevin that he said he was “all in” on his commitment to her and their imminent twins, and he replies with a hard-to-read “I know what I said.”)

TVLine recently got Hartley on the phone to talk about Kevin and Madison’s situation, what Rebecca’s increasing mental decline has to do with it, and more.

this-is-us-justin-hartley-interview-season-5-episode-5-TVLINE | Coming into Episode 5, is there any lingering doubt in Kevin’s mind about the path he’s forged with Madison? Or is he full steam ahead on “This is a good thing, and it’s all going to work out?”
I think the doubt is showcased in Kevin in fear. The fear that it might not work out. Gosh, I mean what if they can’t coexist together and be this cohesive unit that comes together and raises these kids, and he [only] sees them on the weekends? There’s all of that stuff. Probably, those are the things that keep Kevin awake at night. He said as much in the last episode. He sits there and stares at the ceiling and worries. All that worry comes from fear, the fear that it absolutely will not work out and that he’s trying to force something.

I’ve said this before: You can’t really force love. It doesn’t work. He’s also in a little bit of a predicament. It’s not like he’s dating a woman that he doesn’t want to be dating. He’s in a situation where she’s having his babies. And he has, his whole life, been bound by this idea that he wants to be what his father knew he could be. Because that was cut so short, Kevin doesn’t give himself the breaks that maybe he should. He doesn’t cut himself any slack… and then he finds himself in a bigger predicament. It’s not him messing up for the sake of messing up or being selfish, as we saw him do several years ago.

It’s that he puts a lot of stress and pressure on himself, and that sometimes can lead to the balloon popping, so to speak.

this-is-us-justin-hartley-interview-season-5-episode-5-TVLINE | It seems like the movie he’s currently filming is not going to help, with a hard-to-please director who has gone out of his way to let Kevin know he’s not going to pat him on the head. Tell me if you think I’m wrong, but it feels like Kevin has some impostor syndrome going on here.
I don’t think that’s overstated. I would say he’s going through yet another existential crisis. [Laughs] If I were his therapist, I would say you’ve got to prioritize the things in your life that are important to you and not live your life for other people. If you look at what he’s actually been able to accomplish, he’s dedicated to being an amazing dad and raising these kids together. Whatever that thing ends up being with Madison, he’s going to give it his all. His career is on track. This won’t be the last movie in the history of the world. Maybe you say no to the movie, or maybe you can do both. Maybe you don’t have to be there every waking moment of the babies’ lives. There are other things that you have to do.

You have to leave and go put food on the table. There are other things. Live your life for yourself a little bit. But I don’t know if Kevin does that. I think he’s so focused, and he’s on a mission. With a good heart, but just sometimes a little bit misguided.

TVLINE | I loved seeing Jamie Chung pop up as Kevin’s co-star in the film. Do you two have more scenes coming up?
I haven’t seen any. I don’t know if [the show] plans on shooting much of the movie. I guess it would depend on that.

this-is-us-justin-hartley-interview-season-5-episode-5-TVLINE | How clearly is Kevin seeing Rebecca’s level of mental decline right now? It can be a hard thing to accept.
I think that’s part of the stress. That’s why he’s eager to have these babies, and he wants his mom to meet the babies. Look, he’s aware that this decline is degenerative. It’s not going to get better. You have moments where it might be like, “She’s better today than she was yesterday. She’s better this week than she was last week.” But it’s a degenerative disease. There’s a fall-off. I think he wants to make sure that he has these babies and his mom meets them and spends as much time with them as she possibly can have. And also maybe that might actually…sometimes when you spend time around animals or babies or whatever it slows down the demise of your disease. So he’s definitely aware of all of that.

[In the pandemic], how are you…gosh, that’s a stressful thing, too. If you have these twins and I want them to meet Mom, but I can’t right now. It’s not safe. It’s like every single second you hear the clock ticking. Kevin’s got a biological clock, let me put it that way. [Laughs] Kevin is the only man alive that has a biological clock that’s ticking.

Netflix’s Space Force: Grade It! https://briefnews.eu/netflixs-space-force-grade-it/ https://briefnews.eu/netflixs-space-force-grade-it/#respond Sat, 30 May 2020 08:55:29 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/netflixs-space-force-grade-it/

Netflix’s Steve Carell-led Space Force shoots for the comedic stars… but does it reach them?

In a moment, we’ll want to hear what you think about the satirical new comedy series from Carell and his Office-mate Greg Daniels, which debuted Friday. But first, a quick recap:

We meet Carell’s Gen. Mark Naird as he’s being made a four-star general; though our current president’s name is not uttered in the series’ first episode, it’s implied that Trump is the commander-in-chief in the show. At Naird’s first Joint Chiefs of Staff meeting, he’s put in charge of the newly announced Space Force, aka the branch of the military now tasked with “complete space dominance: Boots on the moon by 2024.” Space Force’s base? An old North American Aerospace Defense Command post in Colorado — which means Gen. Naird and his wife Maggie (played by Friends‘ Lisa Kudrow) and daughter Erin (Ma‘s Diana Silvers) have to move from Washington, D.C. (Maggie is not happy about this development.)

A year later in Wild Horse, Colo., it’s the day of Space Force’s big satellite launch. Throughout the day, Naird repeatedly is told that conditions aren’t favorable for a successful lift-off; these warnings come from civilian advisor Dr. Adrian Mallory (The New Pope‘s John Malkovich) and scientists like Dr. Chang Kaifang (Silicon Valley‘s Jimmy O. Yang), but Naird stubbornly refuses to heed them. After taking a minute — during which Beach Boys’ “Kokomo” plays in his head — the general moves forward with the launch of Epsilon 6 anyway… and it’s successful.

Later that night, Naird and Mallory celebrate with drinks and cigars on the porch. And when Naird is gazing at Epsilon 6 through a telescope, he watches as another, bigger craft swings by and clips the satellite’s solar panels. “Motherf–ker!” Naird yells.

Along the way, we learn that Maggie is in jail in Colorado (though we don’t know why) and Erin is dating Bobby, aka Yuri, the Russian exchange scientist (who’s definitely a spy) working with Naird. The series’ all-star cast also includes: Noah Emmerich (The Americans), Jane Lynch (Glee), Diedrich Bader (American Housewife), Dan Bakkedahl (Veep), Jessica St. Clair (Playing House), Roy Wood Jr. (The Daily Show), Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) and the late Fred Willard (Modern Family) in his final role as Naird’s father.

Disney has found an adorable new way to part Mandalorian fans from their hard-earned Beskar steel.

The House of Mouse on Thursday unveiled an animatronic version of The Child, known colloquially as “Baby Yoda.” The toy, now available for pre-order, retails for $ 59.99 — just shy of the real deal’s reported $ 5 million price tag.

Per the little guy’s official description: “Touching the top of The Child’s head activates over 25 sound and motion combinations, including happy and excited sounds, giggles, babbles, and more, all while the toy’s head moves up and down, ears move back and forth, and eyes open and close. Boys and girls can pretend to harness the power of The Force as The Child toy closes its eyes, raises its arm, and sighs as if exerting a great amount of energy. Lay The Child toy down and it will close its eyes and take a ‘Force nap.’”

TVLine was on hand at the New York City event to see The Child in action. Press PLAY on the video below to watch the little guy blink, make noise and use The Force:

Other products featured at the event included plush toys, Star Wars-themed Build-a-Bear stuffed animals, Funko collectibles and a Razor Crest Lego construction set featuring a minifigure of The Child.

In a statement, series creator Jon Favreau commented on fans’ frustration at not being able to purchase Mandalorian loot when the Star Wars offshoot show premiered in November 2019 — or for the holiday season that followed.

“Holding back on product development gave everyone the chance to discover the character affectionately known to fans as ‘Baby Yoda’ together. This is something special in the age of spoilers,” he said. “I am so appreciative of the partnership with the teams at Lucasfilm and Disney who are translating these characters into products for fans to enjoy.”

The Mandalorian will return to Disney+ for Season 2 in October. Outlander season 5 spoilers: Jamie Fraser’s struggles to force him and wife Claire apart? https://briefnews.eu/outlander-season-5-spoilers-jamie-frasers-struggles-to-force-him-and-wife-claire-apart/ https://briefnews.eu/outlander-season-5-spoilers-jamie-frasers-struggles-to-force-him-and-wife-claire-apart/#respond Tue, 11 Jun 2019 04:04:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/outlander-season-5-spoilers-jamie-frasers-struggles-to-force-him-and-wife-claire-apart/

Jamie and Claire Fraser (played by Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe) have captured the hearts of Outlander fans after being portrayed as the perfect couple.

They have managed to move countries and still maintain their relationship and keep their family in tact.

Now, with the family set to fully unite in season five on Fraser’s Ridge, could the couple be about to split after troubles ahead?

Season five will see Jamie attempt to track down Murtagh Fraser (Duncan Lacroix) after finding out he is still alive.

It will be up to Jamie to find him and bring about some justice.

Executive producer and show runner Matthew B. Roberts has spoken out what lies ahead for the Frasers and it does not sound convincing.

He revealed to Parade.com: “There’s some fantastic stuff coming up with how Jamie and Claire have to navigate this.

“Let’s just say Jamie is clearly between a rock and a hard place, the rock being his signed oath to the Crown, to Governor Tryon [Tim Downie], for the land that they live on, and his loyalty and his love for Murtagh.

“So, that is going to cause the Frasers some trouble as we go forward in season five and we’ll see how they get out of it or if they get out of it.”

Fans would be heartbroken if the Frasers were to fall apart after five seasons of beautiful memories for fans.

The producer also reveals a scene from season four that had to be cut because Laura Donnelly, who plays Jamie’s sister Jenny, was not available for filming.

He revealed: “We had to very quickly revamp the story. That’s really one of the big differences between the book and doing it as a television show.

“In the book, everybody in every place is available any time. That’s not the case with us. Sometimes random things dictate what ends up in the story.

“As a fan or audience member when you view it, you can go, ‘God, why did they make that decision? Diana did it this way in the book’.”

Meanwhile, Sam has also spoke to Parade.com and teased the struggles Jamie will have in the future.

He said: “I can’t give away too much, obviously.

“But, as we saw in season four, Jamie’s on the side of the Redcoats.

“He’s made this deal with the Redcoats, the British Army, so he’s actually on the opposite side of the side where his allegiance really is and his loyalty lies, but he knows he needs to do it.”

Despite being on the wrong side of the battle, Sam then explained why Jamie is working so hard.

He revealed: “He needs to do it for his family and for his tenants.”

Executive producer Maril Davies has also teased the difficulties Jamie will face in season five.

Outlander season five is expected to return to STARZ and Amazon Prime Video later this year.

Star Wars 9 leaks: Shock Rey scene ‘with ANAKIN Skywalker’? Rumoured Force Ghost moment https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leaks-shock-rey-scene-with-anakin-skywalker-rumoured-force-ghost-moment/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leaks-shock-rey-scene-with-anakin-skywalker-rumoured-force-ghost-moment/#respond Mon, 28 Jan 2019 21:45:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leaks-shock-rey-scene-with-anakin-skywalker-rumoured-force-ghost-moment/

Alleged details have emerged online suggesting there will be a very brief nod to the lead character of the prequel trilogy in the upcoming film. Star Wars 9 is due out at the end of the year and, throughout the filming process, a barrage of so-called leaks have emerged on the internet – all of which need to be taken with a pinch of salt pending any official info from Lucasfilm. Is this new scene legitimate?

Details come courtesy of prolific YouTuber Mike Zeroh, who has 152,000 subscribers and posts large volumes of videos claiming to be Star Wars leaks.

Zeroh’s track record is decidedly hit-and-miss when it comes to scoops that prove to be the real deal – so is this one that will come to fruition? Best to treat it as pure speculation for the time being.

He describes a scene between “R2-D2, Rey and Anakin Skywalker”, in which “Rey is meditating on a large boulder with her legs crossed and her eyes closed.

“It’s described as a dark environment with a camp fire going on in the background.”

He adds: “The next [shot] goes over Rey, surrounded by pieces of Anakin’s lightsaber floating around her – two pieces of the blue crystal.

“Rey hears voices of Anakin Skywalker – faint words and whispers from the character.

“Another [shot] goes over the front of Rey with a mysterious hooded figure behind her.

“By the time Rey turns around, the figure has vanished.

“A shadow of Anakin’s apparition, it’s described that Rey and Anakin have a strange connection.”

Most of the rumours concerning Anakin’s return have come via fan speculation online, and concrete evidence has been decidedly sparse.

But with Episode 9 set to be the concluding part of the sequel trilogy – and in fact the entire nine-part Skywalker saga – could JJ Abrams be planning on paying special homage to one of its most iconic characters?

We’ll get our answers when Star Wars 9 hits cinemas in December 2019.

In the meantime, the wait continues for a teaser trailer and the film’s official title.
