Antiques Roadshow headed to Newcastle this weekend when the town gathered at the Civic Centre with their antiques hoping to earn a pretty penny or two. 

During the episode, viewers saw expert Paul Atterbury look at an original ribbon from a ship and after revealing the story behind the item, he advisedthe owner to keep hold of it.  

The guest began explaining: “This is the ribbon of the Mauretania which the Duchess of Roxburgh actually smashed the champagne bottle on the launch to send it down the slipway [into the Tyne].

“And it was handed down to me, from my father who was the managing director of Swan Hunter’s, who was handed it down from the managing director of Wigwam Richardson, which actually built the ship itself.” 

Adding to the context, Paul said: “In 1906, it’s launched. It went right through into the ‘30s as a really popular ship and indeed when it was replaced, it was another Mauretania. The name carried on. It was a ship with an amazingly long and successful career but it was also a record-breaker.”

“It certainly was,” the owner clarified. “It held the record for 20 years of the Blue Riband which is, of course, crossing the Atlantic east to west. 

“The fastest crossing?” Paul enquired and the gentleman continued: “The fastest crossing, and it held it both ways for 20 years which is unheard of.”

“It’s of a great rarity. It’s something that has got a wonderful story, very clear, right back to the roots and it’s a ship that remained perennially popular and so it has a market today. Everybody knows the Mauretania.” 

And those at home then saw Paul reveal the value of the item, he said: “So I think that ribbon is going to be about £2,000.” 

“Well, we’ll never sell it because obviously, it’s going to be handed down through the family,” the guest explained. 

“You can’t sell it,” Paul remarked understandably and then joked: “I forbid you to do it!”

It comes after viewers saw another expert stunned when she found out the owner had been wearing a valuable brooch. 

During an episode last month when Antiques Roadshow went to Halifax, Susan Rumfitt was the expert looking over an item of jewellery. 

Discussing the Victoria item, Susan explained how the “intricate and delicate” design set the bar high for valuation. 

She revealed the piece to be worth £2,000 at auction which the owner seem pleased about. 

That was until she explained how she had worn it as fancy dress to a recent party. 

Viewers saw Susan’s mouth drop open in astonishment at the admission and told the owner not to do that in the future. 

Elsewhere in the episode, BBC fans saw an item originally worth £10, fetch a really high price tag. 

The water-dropper which originated from 17th Century China was bought by the lady in Tynemouth around 35 years ago. 

At the time, the price she paid for the item was quite high but not in comparison to what it would fetch in today’s market. 

Antiques Roadshow returns next Sunday at 8pm on BBC One.

North Korea has frozen all tourist visa applications that are underway until 9 September, tour company Kyoryo Tours revealed today.

The move comes after visits by Chinese tourists were suspended by North Korea capital Pyongyang. 

The reason for the suspension of tourist visas is as yet unknown, Kyoryo Tours have said in a statement. 

One explanation is that North Korea is preparing to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, as the country is officially known.

“It is expected that at the end of this month the situation will be clear, applications will be unfrozen, and visas will be issued very quickly after that,” Kyoryo Tours said.

“This suggests to us that this is an issue with the general capacity of the country to receive visitors in September, and, as various high-level state delegations are expected to go to Pyongyang in September, that a higher power in the country is simply pressing pause on tourism until it is clear to them who is coming in such delegations and how many people. 

“This seems the most likely and characteristic reason for this unusual act.”

In previous years, Pyongyang has celebrated the anniversary of the nation’s founding with military parades and mass games complete with thousands of people performing acrobatic choreography in unison, reported news agency AFP.

It is also speculated that North Korea could intend to show off some of its nuclear weapons, which earned it multiple sets of UN Security Council sanctions, added AFP.

Kyoryo Tours has said that this sudden freeze on visas “is an unusual one but it is somewhat characteristic of how things go sometimes in the DPRK.”

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) currently advise against all but essential travel to North Korea, but for those determined to visit, the only way to enter the Hermit State is through a tour operator. 

The FCO advises travellers to remain alert if visiting: “While daily life in the capital city Pyongyang may appear calm, the security situation in North Korea can change with little notice and with no advance warning of possible actions by the North Korean authorities. 

“This poses significant risks to British visitors and residents. You should follow the political and security situation very closely and stay in touch with your host organisation or tour operator.”

Limited help will also be available to UK tourists should something go wrong during a trip to North Korea. 

“The British Embassy Pyongyang can currently provide some consular assistance to British visitors to Pyongyang, but only limited assistance to those visiting parts of the country outside the capital,” said the FCO. 

“This is due to restricted access. In the event of instability or a worsening of the security situation, the ability of the British Embassy to provide consular assistance could be significantly reduced.”

A North Korean defector has recently revealed the horror of life locked up in one of Kim Jong-un’s brutal labour camps, where Christian prisoners are kicked and beaten with sticks for believing in Jesus.

Some 70,000 Christians are incarcerated in concentration camps in North Korea with many coming to an untimely death in squalid conditions, Open Doors, an organisation that supports persecuted Christians, has revealed. 

When Christian Hea Woo, whose name has been changed for her safety, was forced into a camp there was a sign that warned: “Do not try to escape, you shall be killed.” 

Speaking about the way she was treated at the camp, Ms Woo told Open Doors: “The guards were merciless. They kicked me and beat me with sticks. Christians are sometimes killed or locked up for the rest of their lives in concentration camps.” And the threat of death always lurked, she added.

After past rallies were marred with death threats towards Jews, police employed interpreters to help identify hate speech, Der Spiegel reports.

There were some 400 officers deployed to the rally, double the number of the demonstrators, of which only 200 showed up despite organizers earlier announcing there would be some 500, according to Ruptly.

In addition, the rally was moved away from the Pariser Platz in front of the US embassy to the central station, as it would have coincided with Hannukkah celebrations, involving the lighting of the first Hannukkah candle on the Europe’s largest menorah in front of the Brandenburg Gate.

The anti-Israel and anti-US rallies, in particular the sight of Israeli flags being burned on German streets, prompted lawmakers across party lines to condemn protesters’ actions.

Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière (of the CDU) warned the protesters that insulting Israeli symbols would not be tolerated in Germany, which is, as he put it, “in a very special way connected to the state of Israel and all the people of the Jewish faith.”

That’s despite the German Criminal Code not listing the burning of flags, including the Israeli one, as an offense, unless the flag is used as a state emblem. It means that burning it is only punishable if it’s flown by the embassy or another government’s institution.

Now, the Central Council of Jews in Germany wants to change that. “Whoever burns Israeli flags questions Israel’s right to exist, denies it. This way one exceeds the limits of freedom of assembly,” Josef Schuster, President of the Council, told Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung, calling on the German government to “promptly examine possible changes to the law.” 

Germany’s mainstream parties have sided with the sentiment, with Hesse Interior Minister Peter Beuth, from Angela Merkel’s CDU, telling Bild that it is a “task for police and a historic duty of the whole country” to impose barriers “when those mutineers try to carry out the next Intifada in our cities.”
