As part of his executive role with Bauer, he has been charged with exploring China as a market for the giant hockey equipment company.

The fact that his son Tanner Pearson, a left wing fresh off a 24-goal season with the Los Angeles Kings, just happened to be part of the two-game exhibition series between the Kings and the Vancouver Canucks was an added bonus.

What father and son as well as the Kings and Canucks discovered is there still are miles to skate before hockey makes a dint on the sporting scene in China.

“The hockey opportunity is real, but all these initiatives with rinks to be built and youth hockey programs to be developed, has to happen to maximize growth opportunities,” the older Pearson said.

Only 10,088 showed up to watch the Kings’ 5-2 victory in Shanghai last Thursday, and 12,759 were in attendance to see Los Angeles beat Vancouver 4-3 in a shootout in Beijing last Saturday.

It will be interesting to see where China travels in terms of its hockey chops when the 2022 Olympic Games is held in Beijing. It also will be interesting to see if the International Olympic Committee follows through on its threat not to allow the NHL to participate in the 2022 Winter Games after the NHL decided not to permit its players from competing in the Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea this coming February.

Asia is a market the NHL has toyed with before. The Canucks and Anaheim Ducks opened the 1997-98 season with a two-game set in Japan and the game’s best returned a few months later for the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano.

But the league did little after this first step. Meanwhile, 7-foot-6 Yao Ming began his Hall-of-Fame NBA career in 2003 and basketball swiftly became a popular sport in China.

When NHL commissioner Gary Bettman traveled to Beijing last spring to announce the Kings-Canucks exhibition game series, one of the first advertisements he saw when he stepped off the plane was a billboard of NBA superstar Steph Curry, hawking for Samsung.

There are two main players on the fledgling hockey scene in China. First, there is HC Kunlun Red Star, a Russian Kontinental Hockey League club coached by Mike Keenan that is in its second season. Kunlun has several Canadians on its roster, including Gilbert Brule, Kyle Chipchura, Brandon Yip and Geoff Kinrade, all candidates to play for the Canadian Olympic team in Pyeongchang.

The Red Star play in Beijing and it was noticeable last week that the fans there have a little more hockey knowledge as evident by their cheering for a big hit and after-whistle skirmishes.

The other hockey power broker is Chinese billionaire Zhou Yunjie, a pickup-league goalie who made his fortune in manufacturing beer kegs and tin cans for massive companies such as Coca-Cola, Budweiser and Red Bull. His company, O.R.G. Packing, was the presenting sponsor for the two NHL games in China.

Known as Mr. Joe, his O.R.G Packing already has sponsorship deals with the Kings, Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins.

Mr. Joe will be the central figure in the Chinese government’s ambitious plan to construct more than 200 rinks leading up to the 2022 Olympics. Currently, in a country of more than 1.3 billion people, there are just 1,100 registered minor hockey players in China and 6,000 in total paying the game.

Tim Pearson did see positive signs like the ball hockey program at the Shanghai Nanyang Model High School. As part of this institution’s curriculum, it prepares students who wish to continue their studies in Canada by introducing them to facets of Canadian culture, including hockey.

“For students in grades 10, 11 and 12 there is an intramural ball hockey program,” Pearson said. “This allows students to get hockey sticks in their hands so they can experience the game first-hand without making a major investment in skating lessons, equipment and coaching.”

But this is only a start.

“The participation level is small right now,” Pearson said. “They need to develop an infrastructure for the game, put some development models into place that the entire country can learn.”

U.S.-backed Syrian militias will not let government forces cross the Euphrates River in their bid to recover eastern Syria, setting a red line for President Bashar al-Assad as both sides converge on Islamic State in Deir al-Zor, their commander said.

Militia commander Abu Khawla said a civilian administration would be set up to run areas of Deir al-Zor province being captured from Islamic State by his fighters, including its oil fields. The Syrian government was “not fit to lead and rule the people”, he said.

The Deir al-Zor military council, fighting as part of the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), has advanced toward Deir al-Zor from the eastern side of the Euphrates River since launching an offensive into the province a week ago.

Government forces, supported by the Russian air force and Iran-backed militias, have simultaneously advanced into Deir al-Zor from the west. Last week, they broke an Islamic State siege of the provincial capital, Deir al-Zor city, which sits on the western bank of the river.

Deir al-Zor province is Islamic State’s last major foothold in Syria and Iraq. Rich in oil, it is bisected by the Euphrates River and abuts Iraq.

The Russian- and U.S.-backed campaigns against Islamic State in Syria have mostly stayed out of each other’s way as the sides seek to avoid conflict, with the Euphrates often acting as a dividing line between the sides. Talks have been underway to extend a formal demarcation line that has separated the campaigns, officials have said.

Abu Khawla warned government forces and their militia allies against firing across the river as his fighters close in – something he said had happened in recent days.

“Now we have 3 km between us and the eastern riverbank, once our forces reach the area, any shot fired into that area we will consider an attack on the military council,” he said.

“We have notified the regime and Russia that we are coming to the Euphrates riverbank, and they can see our forces advancing,” he said. “We do not allow the regime or its militias to cross to the eastern riverbank.”

“MOVING FORCEFULLY AND QUICKLY”

“Every village around the eastern riverbank of the Euphrates river until the Iraqi-Syrian border is a goal for our forces,” he said. “We are moving forcefully and quickly. We do not have a timeline, but we hope soon to free the entire eastern bank.”

Reflecting the demarcation line, the U.S.-led coalition said on Thursday the SDF was not planning to enter Deir al-Zor city.

But while Deir al-Zor city was not an SDF target, Abu Khawla did not rule out the possibility that it may become one, saying people in the city wanted to be liberated from “the regime and Daesh at the same time”.

But “right now, we have a schedule that we’re following which is the liberation of the eastern riverbanks of the Euphrates”, he said.

He said Islamic State had “shown fierce resistance” when SDF fighters entered the outskirts of Deir al-Zor on the eastern bank of the Euphrates. “The battles are continuous,” he said.

Abu Khawla, who is in his early 30s, said 10,000 fighters were taking part in the Deir al-Zor campaign, the bulk of them members of Arab tribes from eastern Syria. The campaign is supported by the Kurdish militia that dominate the SDF.

“All our soldiers’ training (is) in the Coalition training camps, they oversee our training and our armament,” he said.

Abu Khawla was a member of a Free Syrian Army rebel group in Deir al-Zor until Islamic State took over most of the province in 2014 at the height of its expansion in Syria and Iraq. He fled to Turkey before returning to Syria and joining the SDF.

“Now we are setting up a civil council parallel to the military council of Deir al-Zor, and this civilian council will run all areas freed from (Islamic State),” he said.

There is the food, the wine and, of course, the rich Italian culture. If any sport is associated with Italy, it’s soccer. The roots and passion run deep.

So how did a team of 12- and 13-year-olds from northern Italy end up at the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pa., on baseball’s biggest stage?

On the Italian sports landscape, baseball remains at best a curiosity, buried far behind other sports.

“It’s very difficult, in Italian culture soccer and other minor sports are mixed into the culture of Italy,” says Michele Gerali, whose son Mateo is on the team. “Baseball is a secondary sport. It is difficult, but we are working to explain the game.”

The roots of the game run surprisingly deep. Most of the kids on this Italian team have a family connection to baseball.

“In Italy, most of the kids who play baseball, their parents played or a family friend played. That’s how they arrive to play the game. It is not a very popular sport,” says Fillipo Tiburtini, whose son Federico plays on the team.

Tiburtini played for 19 years in the Italian Baseball League, an eight-team loop that is regarded as the top circuit in Europe.

The league and baseball in Italy date back to the Second World War, when American soldiers introduced the game.

“Baseball in Italy started from the north to the centre,” Tiburtini explains. “There [are] not many baseball fields from the centre to the south.”

In areas like Bologna, where this team is from, the game enjoys some popularity. Most towns have baseball fields and quality equipment is easy to come by.

Most of Italy’s roughly 400 Little League teams come from those areas. This team, representing the Emilia Little League in the Bologna region, had about 130 kids try out for 13 spots. And despite the high calibre of baseball being played here in South Williamasport, many on the team are relatively new to the game compared to other teams.

“I saw it on TV and I really enjoyed watching it and i just wanted to try it,” outfielder Jacopo Borella says through a translator. 

“I saw the game being played, I liked the catching, the hitting, the fielding. And I wanted to try it,” says Riccardo Ravegnani, who started playing only three years ago.

Both say more of their friends are starting to play, but progress is slow. Ground zero for growing the game is the school system, where baseball has had trouble finding room.

“It’s hard to find space if you will, the schools say we don’t have the coaches, the facilities, it’s hard work,” Tiburtini says.  “There is no baseball at school. There is no help there.”

Italian pro teams helping grow game

And while there is long and growing list of players of Italian heritage playing in the major leagues to show what’s possible, it is the Italian professional teams doing the hard work. 

“The teams in the first division invite local kids to games, have them down on the field before the games start. The families come and stay for the games,” Tiburtini says.

It’s a way to grow the game and identify players with potential like Riccardo Ravegnani.

“A coach came to our school to demonstrate the game and we did three or four sessions and they saw I had some ability and said why don’t you give this a try.”

Ravegnani and his teammates worked hard to earn their spot here in South Williamsport. They beat out 20 other teams for the Italian championship. They then journeyed to Poland where they beat out 13 other teams for the right to represent the Europe-Africa region at the Little League World Series.

It’s not just the players and their parents who have been wrapped up in this improbable journey. The team needed a translator for their trip overseas. Enter Mike Romano, who was born in the U.S. and played minor-league baseball before moving to Italy to play professionally. He still lives there.

He understands how special this is.

“This is an opportunity you can’t say no to,” he says. “I played Little League in New York when I was a kid. And it’s every kid’s dream to come here. I’m doing it now at age 64.”

It is unlikely Italy will win a game at this tournament. They were trounced by Canada in their opening game but the experience of playing in a place where baseball is everything won’t be forgotten.

“People at home do not understand what kind of competition this is,” Tiburtini says. “In soccer there are many competitions, but there is nothing like this.”

“When my friends ask what is this championship I explain this is like the World Cup of soccer but for Little League,” Michele Gerali says.

Don’t look now, but GoPro just shifted a little toward becoming a mobile app company. The action camera maker has struck a deal with Huawei that will see its intelligent video editor, Quik, integrated with the photo gallery app in the P10, P10 Plus and other smartphones packing newer versions of Huawei’s EMUI interface. The centerpiece is a Highlights feature that uses Quik to automatically whip up a video based on your photos and videos, complete with backing music. Think of it as a more video-focusd spiritual successor to HTC’s Zoe.

Appropriately, GoPro is sprucing up the stand-alone Quik app for Android and iOS users. There’s an easier editing flow with new options to both personalize and stylize videos (similar to what P10 owners get), and it should be easier to pick songs and fine-tune the sound.

The Huawei move certainly doesn’t signal an exit from hardware any time soon — that’s GoPro’s bread and butter. Along with the Karma drone, however, it does signal a further attempt to diversify beyond GoPro’s original camera business. Success with partnerships like this not only puts GoPro’s technology in front of more people, it gives the company a source of revenue that isn’t tied to its device release cycles — it might not have to worry so much about taking its time with a new camera.
