After a year of workshopping, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy unveiled the GOP's 2023 "Commitment to America" platform — featuring stock footage of Ukraine and Russia used to demonstrate the beauty of the United States and a fake Abraham Lincoln quote used in a letter to members of Congress.
In a promotional video released yesterday titled "The Preamble to the Commitment to America," a narrator exhalts America's exceptionalism, blames Democrats for leading the country "off track," and announces the 2023 party platform priorities: an economy that's strong, a nation that's safe, a future built on freedom, and a government that's accountable.
The intentionally vague platform seeks to unite the GOP ahead of a tense election season marked by internal conflict and anticipated rifts between moderate Republicans and election-denying allies of Donald Trump, The Washington Post reported.
Several clips in the video meant to portray the diversity and "vibrancy" of America — including scenes of a woman shopping in a supermarket, a child running through a field, and a farmer carrying a bag of wheat — were actually stock footage filmed in Russia and Ukraine, HuffPost first reported.
Several images were created by Serg Grbanoff, a filmmaker based in Russia, HuffPost reported, who confirmed to the outlet the images were created in the Volgograd region of his home country. Another image was created by a Shutterstock contributor, DedovStock, who posts shots he takes in Ukraine.
"Interesting how you guys aren't remotely interested on the issues facing the American people in the video," McCarthy spokesman Mark Bednar told HuffPost when asked about the stock footage.
The stock footage wasn't the only issue to arise with the rollout of the platform. In a letter to House members announcing its priorities — tweeted by Politico reporter Olivia Beavers — McCarthy signs his name to letterhead featuring a quote falsely attributed to Lincoln.
"Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality," the letter reads, attributing the quote to the nation's 16th president.
Christian McWhirter, a historian at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, told The Daily Beast he could find "no reliable evidence" that Lincoln ever uttered those words.
"They do not appear in his writings and I cannot find them recollected by any of his contemporaries," McWhirter told The Daily Beast.
The phrase, attributed online to Lincoln, Shearson Lehman, and anonymous sources depending on the reference point, was printed in a 1986 full-page ad in The Wall Street Journal paid for by investment banking firm Lehman Brothers to thank its long-term employees.
"Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality," the ad reads, The Daily Beast reported. "It is the words that speak boldly of your intentions. And the actions which speak louder than words. Fans will remember in Stranger Things season two Will Byers (played by Noah Schnapp) became infected with a dangerous virus that was controlled by the Mind Flayer from the Upside Down.
The Mind Flayer was able manipulate him into doing what he wanted and was able to speak through him.
Eventually, the creature was exorcised from his body and he recovered from the virus.
Now, with the Mind Flayer set to return for Netflix’s season three, it appears Billy (Dacre Montgomery) may suffer a similar fate and become the season’s big villain.
Eagle-eyed viewers noticed that in the season three trailer Billy is looking at a huge black and blooded mark on his arm, symptomatic of a severe infection.
Now, another video clip has teased the fate set to be handed to Billy.
In leaked footage which aired on Australian morning show Sunrise, Billy has a huge moment that could change him forever.
The clip made its way onto Reddit and user Tetrini shared the scene to intrigue fans even further.
In the scene, a blissfully-unaware Billy drives his 1979 Camaro along the road and then suddenly something huge smacks against the car and sends him veering off the road.
He then crashes into Brimborn Steel Works, which has a hidden meaning.
Some fans may recollect seeing the factory teased in the Fourth of July season three poster, which was released by Netflix last month.
It shows Billy in front of the factory and both are under the shadow of a terrifying monster set to play its part in season three.
The factory appears to be derelict and decaying, hinting it could be riddled with the infection brought by the Mind Flayer.
Could Billy become infected after heading into the eerie-looking factory?
Co-creator Matt Duffer has previously teased a big storyline to come for Billy in season three to Vulture: “Billy was supposed to have a bigger role.
“There was a whole teen supernatural storyline that just got booted because it was just too cluttered, you know? A lot of that’s just getting kicked into season three.”
Meanwhile, Mike Wheeler star Finn Wolfhard has revealed: “The first season was more about the adventure aspect and kind of fun, the second season was more about the horror aspect.
“Season three is everything, like the fun of season one and the horror of season two and the Duffers have got better at it, at writing it.
“And we’ve become better actors.”
What’s more, Millie Bobby Brown has revealed a huge secret about Eleven’s superpower.
Stranger Things season three arrives July 4 on Netflix.
Season five of Outlander is currently in production and the Fraser clan is set to return in full with Jamie leading the family’s new life.
Fans are suffering from ‘Droughtlander’ at the moment as they wait for their favourite show to return to Starz with the new brand new season.
Luckily for them, they have been given a chance to see Jamie and actor Sam Heughan in brand new footage and temporarily end ‘Droughtlander’.
Sadly, it is not a season five trailer, but instead it is unseen season four bloopers.
The bloopers are available after the show produced the season four Blu-ray and DVD and it on there fans can see the unseen footage.
Actor Sam has a huge fan following and they cling onto any news and footage of him and his character Jamie.
So they will be delighted to see him take centre-stage and suffer from some funny filming errors.
One of those clips sees Sam trying to act out his lines in traditional bullish Jamie fashion.
However, instead of perfecting the line, he stumbles on it and attempts to almost spit it out because he cannot say it properly.
In the hilarious clip, he throws in a few expletives to make up for the words that got lost on their way out.
The whole clip makes Claire Fraser star Caitriona Balfe chuckle as she watches her on-screen husband make a fool of himself.
What’s more, the season four DVD gives fans the opportunity to see brand new added scenes that did not make the cut.
Fans can see Lord John Grey (played by David Berry) deal with the difficulties of being a dad amongst other unseen footage.
Meanwhile, fans have been given snippets of footage from season five filming to keep them entertained.
Caitriona has teased her co-star and fans she wouldn’t be returning to the show in a recent post.
The aftermath of the tragic house collapse that saw at least 31 people lose their lives has been captured in startling drone footage, as rescue workers scramble to find survivors.
The devastating gas explosion rendered the 10-story residential building in Russia’s Urals to rubble on New Years Eve morning.

31 bodies pulled from debris of building partially destroyed by house blast in Russia
Four children died in the accident and residents are still missing. Six people have been rescued from the rubble, including an 11-month-old boy.
The video shows what looks like a scene from a war zone. A massive pile of rubble stands in the gap where the building once stood.
A wall of different coloured wallpaper is all that remains of the scores of apartments blown up in the explosion.
The haunting footage was filmed by Artyom Ibragimov who said he brought his drone to the site of the explosion when he heard the news.
Ibragimov spent the day helping rescue workers and his drone footage alerted the crew to the fact that the roof was badly damaged and at risk of collapse.

There was no need for the IDF to raid the Palestinian news agency office in Ramallah and use force and tear gas to seize CCTV footage, as they could have asked for it and got it, WAFA editor Maher Abukhater has said.
Israeli soldiers raided the office of the Palestinian news agency WAFA in the West Bank on Monday. According to the agency, soldiers fired tear gas and seized footage from surveillance cameras while searching the building.
Israel gave no reason for the raid, but it is believed the action is connected to the IDF’s search for the perpetrator of an attack on Sunday which left seven Israelis wounded.
RT spoke to Maher Abukhater, English desk editor at the Palestinian news agency, who was there at the time of the raid and described how events unfolded.
RT: How unusual is such a raid?
Maher Abukhater: It is unusual. We don’t expect that IDF would raid media outlets in Ramallah, let alone anywhere else. There are international resolutions and laws that protect journalists and media outlets, particularly if they are official media as well. This raid was totally unexpected.
We were watching what was going on in the street below us. But we never believed that they would really enter the building and eventually use tear gas inside our own newsrooms.

Israeli troops raid Palestinian news agency looking for footage, fire tear gas
RT: It is believed this raid is connected to the IDF’s search for the perpetrator of Sunday’s attack. Don’t the Israeli authorities have the right to investigate this crime?
MA: They can investigate it, sure. They can follow up on it, definitely. But our office is really far from where the incident has happened. And they started an operation in the morning in Ramallah starting from the north and moving gradually into the city. And they were almost few meters away from the presidential headquarters.
I am not sure what they are going to find there. They claimed that they were looking for whatever the security cameras available to take the footage. I am not sure what makes them believe the perpetrators were even in that area.
RT: This raid gives the impression that Israeli soldiers can storm any building, any time. Is that the status quo in the West Bank?
MA: It does happen repeatedly. These armed raids are continuous throughout the West Bank. In Ramallah it is not too often. There are usually confrontations on the outskirts, near the checkpoints. But to enter into the city itself, normally they do that if they want to come and arrest somebody. But they don’t come in with such a force, not in a broad daylight, they usually do that at night. This is quite uncommon to really see such a thing happening in Ramallah.
They could have told us that they want the footage, directly or indirectly through the Palestinian officers in liaison with the Israelis. They could have done that and the footage would have been delivered to them…
There was no need at all for what happened – no need to enter the building and to take them by force, they used intimidation and force… entered the rooms where the servers were, took the footage without any approval from the administration of WAFA.
We’ve seen an escalation in the attacks recently in the West Bank. Stalemate in the peace process, lack of hope, people not seeing prospects for any peace happening anytime soon. The pressure is mounting on the Palestinians from all sides. The things seem to be changing on the ground, affecting the situation on the ground.

A Turkish woman has come under fire after footage of her stealing a blanket from a stray cat before striking the animal with it went viral. People took to Twitter to brand her a “brutal thief.”
The footage shows the white cat hanging around on the side of a street next to a cardboard box, supposedly the feline’s home, where the stray animal used to sleep and keep warm in chilling temperatures. The box contained a tiny coloured blanket.
A woman in a grey coat passes the cat and affectionately pats him on the head before moving on.
Another woman, in a black hooded coat and with bare legs, then comes into the picture.
She is seen stopping in front of the cat for a while before she snatches its blanket, despite it being blatantly too small for her figure.
The cat uses its claws to cling on to it, but after a short-lived battle, the woman succeeds in pinching it.
Yet, in case she hadn’t done the cat enough harm by stealing its winter cover, the woman is then seen striking the creature with its very own blanket several times.
One netizen lashed out at the woman for“striking the child.”
The footage was recorded by a security camera belonging to a veterinary clinic in the Süleyman Bey neighborhood of Turkey’s western province of Yalova. Berna Özer, owner of the clinic and the one responsible for sharing the content on her Facebook page on Wednesday, expressed her bafflement at the woman’s acts.
“What can be said to someone who steals a small blanket from a cat in such a cold weather?” Özer, who takes care of the stray cats in the neighbourhood, said, Hürriyet Daily News reports.
The footage stirred uproar on social media, with hundreds of animal lovers flocking to the cat’s defence.

One Tweeter blasted the hooded woman as “nuts”, while another branded her “brutal and unscrupulous”.
The third one took a more pessimistic outlook on the incident, saying: “I’ve always said that the conscience of people is in extinction.”
A man mirrored this as he branded the woman “uninhibited, vicious, ignorant, full of filth. […] We really have to go through a moral conscience.”

Police have released three new video clips showing Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, who London believes are culpable in the poisoning of a former Russian spy and his daughter, arriving in Salisbury and walking the streets.
London Metropolitan police have posted an update on the long-running investigation into the poisoning of former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury on March 4 and the subsequent death of Dawn Sturgess in nearby Amesbury, who, British police believe, was accidentally exposed to the same ‘Novichok’ nerve agent.
Police have released new images of the fake Nina Ricci perfume bottle they claim contained the chemical, but had no insight on how it ended up in the street where Sturgess’ partner Charlie Rowley picked it up.
Scotland Yard has also made public three CCTV clips, showing Boshirov and Petrov arriving at Salisbury train station on March 4, walking down a street “in the vicinity of the Skripals’ home address,” and walking over a bridge on their way back to the station.
Nothing in the footage betrays the sinister mission London claims Putin had sent the men on. In the third clip, Petrov is seen stopping on a bridge to take a picture – perhaps of the 123-meter tall spire of the Salisbury Cathedral, which can be seen above the River Avon from that spot.
Skripal and his daughter Yulia were found slumped on a bench in Salisbury on March 4. Both have long since been released from the hospital and are living in an undisclosed location in the UK.
The British authorities almost immediately pointed the finger at Moscow, although the formula of the “military-grade” nerve agent used in the poisoning has been an open secret for many years and has been studied in many Western countries, including the US and the UK.
Moscow has denied any involvement in the incident and has repeatedly offered its cooperation to British authorities. London has refused the offer while insisting that it was the Russian side which is unwilling to cooperate. The suspected assassins stated in an interview with RT in September that they were not intelligence agents, as alleged by the British police, but mere tourists who came to visit the British town for sightseeing.
Despite offering no hard evidence in support of its claims, the British authorities responded expelling 23 Russian diplomats, with the US and a number of Western countries following suit. Washington took the lead by expelling 60 diplomats, with Trump threatening to impose further sanctions on Russia.
In a tit-for-tat response, Moscow then expelled over 150 Western diplomats.

China hotels have come under fire after secret footage filmed in the five-star establishments showed the shocking methods used by the cleaners.
The 12-minute-long footage, filmed on secret cameras, has gone viral after being uploaded to Chinese social media site Weibo.
It shows hotel cleaners using dirty towels and flannels to wipe down surfaces in the bathroom.
They use the same cloths to clean glasses and cutlery, as well as the toilet and sink.
The compilation video also shows the cleaners wiping down the shower cubicle with the same sponge as is used for washing the mugs and glasses.
One cleaner even wipes a glass with the bottom edge of her uniform.
Weibo user Huazong, who posted the footage, said he had captured the content after spending more than 2,000 nights in 147 five-star hotels across various major Chinese cities.
Fourteen luxury hotels in total appear in the footage including Hilton and Marriott.
Four international hotel chains has since apologised of the unsanitary cleaning methods, reported The Independent.
The Waldorf Astoria in Shanghai and the Sheraton in Guiyang city have said they will review procedures.
The Shangri-La Hotel in Fuzhou said the behaviour violated its hygiene standards.
Park Hyatt in Beijing have called it an “isolated incident,” according to the newspaper.
The Peninsula hotel in Beijing said that city food and drug administration officials had carried out an on-site examination of cups the day before the footage was filmed, reported PA.
The establishment said officials had found the cups cleaner than standards required, but they were later sent for further tests following the footage’s release.
China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism has now ordered investigations into the apparent breaches of hygiene standards.
The local tourism authority in Shanghai is conducting investigations into the issues raised in the video, according to the state-owned Global Times newspaper.
“The hotels involved will be dealt with in a strict manner upon investigation,” said the Global Times.
The footage of the shocking sub-par cleaning has now been viewed over 30 million times.
Alarming research has shown how cleanliness levels in many hotel rooms can be alarmingly questionable.
A survey of 1,000 people by sleep website The Sleep Judge revealed the many disgusting things hotel and Airbnb guests have found in their rooms.
According to the study, 88 per cent of hotel guests have found other people’s hair in their room.
Sixteen per cent of hotel guests found evidence of urine in their room, 12 per cent found both sexual fluids and blood.
BT Sport were at the stadium for their Premier League Tonight show following Leicester’s 1-1 draw with West Ham.
The show sees host Jake Humphrey discuss pressing football matters with a group of specialist pundits – in this case Owen Hargreaves, Chris Sutton and John Hartson.
Humphrey had earlier stopped the show to point out Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha’s helicopter taking off from the pitch.
He joked to the fellow guests that they need to evaluate their ‘life choices’ – a reference to the Thai billionaire’s huge wealth.
The show carried on as usual with Humphrey discussing the hopes of British managers in the Premier League.
Humphrey asks: “Would Eddie Howe be considered for one of the top jobs in English football, if one came up?”
At that very moment a huge boom is heard in the background – believed to be the moment Srivaddhanaprabha’s helicopter crashed into the King Power Stadium car park.

Humphrey then had to fight back tears as he announced on live TV that the Leicester City owner’s helicopter had crashed.
A shaken Humphrey took to the camera and said: “Things have taken a very sad turn in the last few moments.
“Obviously it’s been a very difficult day already because we had the news this morning that our great friend and colleague Glen Hoddle was taken ill.
“We’ve just seen the Leicester City owner’s helicopter take off from the centre circle here at Leicester City.

“It’s something that is a very regular feature for us. We often sit here after the games and see the helicopter take off, make remarks about owning a football club and flying in a helicopter.
“However, it’s suddenly got very serious because the helicopter that took off from here just about five minutes ago whilst we were live on air… has crashed.
“It’s crashed in the club car park just outside the window here. We were on air, we heard a commotion.
“No news on casualties, no news on who was in the helicopter, nothing’s been confirmed.”

Meanwhile, Leicester manager Claude Puel has spoken on French radio about the incident.
He told Sports Radio France: “It is a tragedy for the club.
“All of my thoughts are with the victims and their families and I want reassure all the people who are concerned about me.
“I am distraught, but I am well.”

There are fears there are ‘no survivors’ from the horror Leicester helicopter crash at the King Power Stadium on Saturday night.
Sky News reported this morning that ‘it’s not clear if Srivaddhanaprabha, a Thai billionaire, was on board but there are fears that there are no survivors’.
An investigation from the Air Accident Investigation branch is now underway.
Sky News reporter Katerina Vittozzi said this morning: “As you can see behind me, there’s a police cordon in place all around the King Power Stadium.
“The car park where the helicopter crashed is just behind the stadium behind me.

“Leicestershire Police have told me this morning that the investigation is being led by the Air Accident Investigation branch.
“They will try and piece together exactly what led to this helicopter crashing just moments after it took off last night.
“Just in the last 10 minutes or so, we have seen a few people arrive with flowers. It’s testament to how important the owner is to the Leicester City Football Club fans.
“He is a man who, when he bought the club, oversaw the most successful period in the club’s history, leading it to the Premier League win in 2016.
“He was a man who loved England, loved football and loved all things British including polo.

“There is no confirmation he was on board this flight but we do know it was routine for him to use the helicopter both to get to games and to leave afterwards.
“But as yet there’s no details from the police about who was on board the aircraft and how it crashed.
“There are a few fans who have turned up with flowers to the stadium. We can expect many more over the course of the day to come and apy tribute as they discover more and more details about what happened here last night.
“Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha was not just a stand-alone owner of this club. He was someone who was very much involved with its life, he’d offer things like free beer to spectators when they were doing welll.
“He was from Thailand but he was very much an integral part of this club having bought it in 2010.
“Fans here have spoken about their deep shock at this and their sadness as well.”

Former Leicester manager Sven Goran-Eriksen, who worked under Mr Srivaddhanaprabha between 2010 and 2011, has discussed the incident.
“It’s frightening news,” he told 5Live. “I saw the news, of course, this morning and I still hope it’s not true and he’s alive of course.
“I knew the whole family and the father. When you know him, as i did, you knew he’s a very, very generous man – to the players, the staff and people working for him – with the fans and the community. He’s an extremely generous man.”
Eriksson was sacked by the owner in 2011 and he the now-Philippines manager says it was the right decision.
“He sacked me but he did well, he was right to do it,” the ex-England boss said.
“I bought the wrong players and I failed and it was fair of him to do it.”
