Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey.

  • The pound after the Bank of England said it's closely monitoring financial markets.
  • The BoE didn't say it would take emergency action to stem the decline of the pound, which hit a record low earlier Monday.
  • The pound fell by nearly 2% after the statement but didn't return to record lows.

The British pound turned lower Monday after the Bank of England said it's watching financial markets, a statement that didn't include any specific action the central bank would take to halt the pummeling of the country's currency.

"The Bank is monitoring developments in financial markets very closely in light of the significant repricing of financial assets," BoE Governor Andrew Bailey said in a statement Monday.

The pound fell by 1.8% to $ 1.0651 after the statement was released. The bank issued the afternoon statement hours after pound sterling sank to a historic low against the dollar, triggered by fears over the UK government's proposed  £45 billion ($ 48.6 billion) mini-budget. The pound during Asian trading sank by nearly 5% to $ 1.0350, the lowest level since 1971 when the UK switched to a decimal-based currency system.

Cable, the nickname for the pound-dollar exchange, later recovered some ground and briefly bounced back above $ 1.09. Financial markets were looking for the Bank of England to say it would raise interest rates or enact emergency measures to aid the pound.

"The role of monetary policy is to ensure that demand does not get ahead of supply in a way that leads to more inflation over the medium term. As the [Monetary Policy Committee] has made clear, it will make a full assessment at its next scheduled meeting of the impact on demand and inflation from the Government's announcements, and the fall in sterling, and act accordingly," said Bailey.

The central bank's next policy meeting was scheduled for November 3. The MPC has raised the UK's benchmark interest rate seven times since December to control inflation. It raised the rate last week by 50 basis points to 2.25%. British inflation was 9.9% in August, slightly easing from 10.1% in July.

The pound has been hit after the government, under new Prime Minister Liz Truss, last week introduced a "Growth Plan" aimed at a 2.5% trend of economic expansion. The so-called mini-budget includes proposals for the largest tax cuts since 1972. The plan has spooked investors who fear it may increase inflation further and sharply increase government debt.

Financial markets on Monday were pricing in expectations for UK interest rates to rise to soar to 6% next year on the back of sterling's fall.

Ahead of the BoE's statement, Mark Makepeace, founder and former chief executive of FTSE Russell, said on CNBC the pound could fall to parity with the dollar if the bank didn't step in. FTSE Russell is a subsidiary of the London Stock Exchange Group and its global lineup of financial indexes includes the closely watched FTSE 100 gauge of UK blue-chip stocks. The FTSE 100 ended Monday's session up by less than 0.1%.

Nomura earlier Monday said it expects the pound to reach parity with the dollar by the end of November, and for it to fall to 0.975 relative to the dollar by the end of 2022.

Russia may face a domestic energy crunch as production slows following EU’s oil embargo, natural-gas cuts to Europe https://briefnews.eu/russia-may-face-a-domestic-energy-crunch-as-production-slows-following-eus-oil-embargo-natural-gas-cuts-to-europe/ https://briefnews.eu/russia-may-face-a-domestic-energy-crunch-as-production-slows-following-eus-oil-embargo-natural-gas-cuts-to-europe/#respond Tue, 06 Sep 2022 09:27:17 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/russia-may-face-a-domestic-energy-crunch-as-production-slows-following-eus-oil-embargo-natural-gas-cuts-to-europe/ Russian President Vladimir Putin
Russian President Vladimir Putin.

  • A halt in gas supplies to Europe could cost Russia as much as $ 6.6 billion a year, per Bloomberg.
  • The export slump could lead to deep cuts in Russian gas output, hitting domestic energy goals.
  • The EU's oil embargo could also cause production of the fuel to fall, leading to a shortage in Russia.

Russia has halted natural-gas flows to Europe via a key pipeline amid the war in Ukraine, but the move may end up biting itself, according to Bloomberg, citing an internal document prepared for the Russian government.

While Russia is an energy giant, most of its exports go to European customers. In 2021, Europe snapped up about half of Russia's oil products and three-quarters of its natural gas, according to the US Energy Information Administration.

Thus, a fall in exports to Europe means Russian natural-gas production would have to fall to better meet lower shipment needs. This would, in turn, hit Moscow's plans to boost domestic gas supplies, per Bloomberg, citing the report.

Additionally, a complete halt in natural-gas supplies to Europe could cost the Kremlin as much as 400 billion rubles, or $ 6.6 billion, a year in tax revenues, according to Russia's internal report, per the media outlet. While Russia is trying to diversify its customer base, new markets will not be able to make up lost sales from European customers in the medium term.

As Europe is also set to ban most Russian oil imports from the end of 2022, the demand slump could lead to a deep cut in Russian production, causing a shortage of the fuel domestically, Bloomberg reported, citing the internal report.

Overall, the internal Russian report paints a gloomy picture of the country's economy amid sweeping sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine — which contrasts sharply with more upbeat data from the Kremlin in recent months.

The situation could worsen if the world enters a recession. That's because Russia would've already lost its stable European market, causing it to become a "swing supplier" of energy products — with the country having to adjust and adapt its output to changing market demands, according to the report.

This would mean that a plunge in demand for Russian oil products could have an adverse economic impact, such as pushing up inflation in the country and putting downward pressure on the ruble, the report warned, per Bloomberg.

Cloudflare blocks trans harassment forum Kiwi Farms following escalation of ‘targeted threats’ https://briefnews.eu/cloudflare-blocks-trans-harassment-forum-kiwi-farms-following-escalation-of-targeted-threats/ https://briefnews.eu/cloudflare-blocks-trans-harassment-forum-kiwi-farms-following-escalation-of-targeted-threats/#respond Mon, 05 Sep 2022 07:48:14 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/cloudflare-blocks-trans-harassment-forum-kiwi-farms-following-escalation-of-targeted-threats/ DNS and internet security provider Cloudflare has blocked Kiwi Farms, an infamous forum known for its online and real-world harassment campaigns. CEO Matthew Prince announced the company’s decision on Saturday after it initially resisted calls to stop protecting the website.

“As Kiwi Farms has felt more threatened, they have reacted by being more threatening,” Prince told The Washington Post. “We think there is an imminent danger, and the pace at which law enforcement is able to respond to those threats we don’t think is fast enough to keep up.” On the company’s blog, Prince said that Cloudflare saw an increase in targeted threats “unlike we have previously seen from Kiwi Farms or any other customer before.”

Kiwi Farms was founded in 2013 by former 8chan administrator Joshua Moon. In the decade since it went online, at least three suicides have been linked to harassment campaigns that originated on the forum. In recent weeks, Kiwi Farms has gained widespread notoriety across both sides of the US political spectrum. After she was the target of multiple swatting attacks that originated on the website, trans Twitch streamer Clara Sorrenti began a campaign to shut down Kiwi Farms. She used the hashtag DropKiwifarms to urge Cloudflare and other critical internet infrastructure providers to stop serving the website.

“There are countless people suffering because of this website,” Sorrenti told The Post on Saturday, moments after police arrived at her home in the wake of another swatting attempt. “Kiwi Farms isn’t about free speech, it’s about hate speech. The majority of the content on the site is threads used for targeted harassment against political targets.”

Separately, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia called for the forum’s shutdown after a user claiming affiliation with Kiwi Farms sent police to her home. “That website needs to be taken down,” Greene told Newsmax during an interview. “There should be no business or any kind of service where you can target your enemy."

Earlier in the week, it appeared Cloudflare would not take action against Kiwi Farms. The company published a blog post on Wednesday detailing its policies on abusive content. Without directly mentioning the forum, Prince and another executive argued that withholding security services from websites the company and public find reprehensible would ultimately harm oppressed and marginalized voices.

On Saturday, Prince described Cloudflare’s decision to block Kiwi Farms as a “dangerous one that we are not comfortable with.” He told The Post he would have preferred to take action in response to a court order but added it was an easier call than when Cloudflare decided to drop the Daily Stormer and 8chan. As of the writing of this story, Kiwi Farms is still online after moving to DDoS-guard and a Russian domain.

The Mash Report cancelled: BBC show AXED following years of woke left-wing criticism https://briefnews.eu/the-mash-report-cancelled-bbc-show-axed-following-years-of-woke-left-wing-criticism/ https://briefnews.eu/the-mash-report-cancelled-bbc-show-axed-following-years-of-woke-left-wing-criticism/#respond Fri, 12 Mar 2021 16:52:27 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-mash-report-cancelled-bbc-show-axed-following-years-of-woke-left-wing-criticism/

For four seasons, The Mash Report had graced BBC Two with comedian Nish Kumar providing a satirical take on the week’s headlines. However, the show faced several criticisms during its run for being particularly left-leaning and biased against numerous issues including Brexit.

A spokesperson said the cancellation is a result of the BBC “making room for new comedy shows.”

“We are very proud of The Mash Report but in order to make room for new comedy shows we sometimes have to make difficult decisions and it won’t be returning,” the statement read.

Host Nish has taken to Twitter following the news and caused more controversy following the news.

He penned to his 364.9k followers: “A lot of people are asking me for a comment and here it is.”

Nish attached a screenshot of him on the show posing alongside the words: “Boris Johnson is a liar and a racist.”

Comedian Geoff Norcott, who often appeared on the show too, has also spoken out following the show’s cancellation.

Alongside a highlight reel of his time on the show, the comedian wrote: “It was fun to get to say stuff like this on #TheMashReport.

“Particularly the unexpected reaction in the room,” he concluded.

The news has been welcomed by a number of BBC viewers and the likes of Laurence Fox who quickly made his thoughts clear online.

He sarcastically tweeted: “Tell me it isn’t true! [cry emoji] @MrNishKumar. Defund virtue signalling.”

It didn’t take long for people to react to the news in response to Fox’s tweet, with one applauding the decision: “Left wing comedy is lazy comedy, mining the same allotment of Brexit and Tories week after week.

“I can laugh at both if the joke is funny, but when it becomes tired and worn out and there are plenty of other topics ripe for satire, The Mash Report had limited appeal.”

A second agreed: “Such a shame, nish was one of the funniest comedians on Television…. Said no one ever. Such a loss to the one trick pony comedy community.”

While a third weighed in: “Left wing comedy just isn’t funny [nor is right wing comedy come to that]. Comedy needs to have no sacred cows of any kind.”

The BBC is yet to announce which “new comedy shows” will be taking The Mash Report’s place in the schedule.

A BBC spokesman told Express.co.uk it was a “difficult decision” but the show won’t be returning so that there is room for other comedy shows.

James Martin walks off This Morning set following disastrous Spin to Win call https://briefnews.eu/james-martin-walks-off-this-morning-set-following-disastrous-spin-to-win-call/ https://briefnews.eu/james-martin-walks-off-this-morning-set-following-disastrous-spin-to-win-call/#respond Mon, 07 Dec 2020 14:42:28 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/james-martin-walks-off-this-morning-set-following-disastrous-spin-to-win-call/

As per usual on This Morning, Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby gave one lucky viewer the chance to pocket some cash on Spin to Win. Raj was today’s fortunate ITV viewer and bagged himself a cool £750 but was also given the opportunity by Phillip the land himself a bag of goodies, known as the “bag of shizzle”. In order to do so, however, he had to rightly identify James Martin as the chef cooking up a treat in the This Morning kitchen – a task that proved rather difficult.

After winning £750, the bag of treats was dropped from the ceiling for Phillip and Holly to offer up to Raj.

Filled with unique This Morning goodies such as giant baubles and a jigsaw puzzle, all Raj had to do was answer a simple question to secure it.

Phillip and Holly asked him who the celebrity chef was cooking in the studio today as the camera panned to James’ face.

However, Raj responded with silence as he failed to remember James’ name – prompting the celebrity chef to walk off set as Holly and Phillip tried to give the caller some clues.

By this point, James had returned to the studio but Holly wasn’t going to let Raj get away with not answering correctly.

“You wear them on your feet! Doctor…Big stompy, clompy things,” she added but Phillip had had enough.

Eventually, Phillip ended up screaming down the camera: “Martin! Say Martin!”

The trio saw the funny side of Raj’s mishap as they all shared a laugh at the TV chef’s expense.

However, by this point, Melody hadn’t even had a go at the machine but when she finally got her chance, she may have wished she didn’t.

With her first counter plunged into drop zone one, Melody urged her counter on, saying: “Jeez, Louise.”

Ben similarly offered some encouragement: “That was in a rush to get down… and it’s over the top shelf.”

Bold and the Beautiful Is First U.S. Series to Resume Production Following Three-Month COVID-19 Hiatus https://briefnews.eu/bold-and-the-beautiful-is-first-u-s-series-to-resume-production-following-three-month-covid-19-hiatus/ https://briefnews.eu/bold-and-the-beautiful-is-first-u-s-series-to-resume-production-following-three-month-covid-19-hiatus/#respond Tue, 16 Jun 2020 08:09:03 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/bold-and-the-beautiful-is-first-u-s-series-to-resume-production-following-three-month-covid-19-hiatus/

The Bold and the Beautiful will resume physical production this Wednesday (June 17), TVLine has confirmed. The CBS soap will be the first scripted series on U.S. soil to get back up and running following Hollywood’s three-month, coronavirus-imposed shutdown.

“The health and safety of our cast and crew are of foremost importance to us,” a B&B rep tells TVLine. “We will be following all protocols set forth by the State, City, Television City, and the various guilds.”

It remains unclear when exactly new episodes of B&B will resume airing on CBS, but sources say it could be as early as July.

Last week, L.A. County issued its “Reopening Protocol for Music, Television and Film Production,” laying out policies designed to protect employee health and measures to ensure physical distancing. Among the new safety measures: All cast and crew are required to wear cloth face coverings whenever they are in contact with others, unless — as in the case with actors — the production activity does not allow for the wearing of a face covering.

Due to the COVID-19 production shutdown, both B&B and fellow CBS sudser Y&R ran out of new episodes in April. CBS has been filling the void with theme weeks of reruns from both shows.

Last month, CBS officially confirmed that B&B had been renewed for two more years, through the 2021-22 TV season.

Gone With the Wind Removed From HBO Max Library Following Criticism https://briefnews.eu/gone-with-the-wind-removed-from-hbo-max-library-following-criticism/ https://briefnews.eu/gone-with-the-wind-removed-from-hbo-max-library-following-criticism/#respond Wed, 10 Jun 2020 03:41:53 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/gone-with-the-wind-removed-from-hbo-max-library-following-criticism/

HBO Max has removed the classic film Gone With the Wind from its movie library following a number of calls to do so, in light of the ongoing global protests for racial equality.

ScreenRant first reported the news, and a search of the HBO Max archives confirms that the movie is no longer available to stream. The film, released in 1939, won ten Oscars and became one of the top-earning movies of all time, and was prominently featured in HBO Max’s initial advertising push. But its romantic depiction of Civil War-era America and whitewashing of slavery is seen as problematic by many modern-day viewers, especially in light of the current social unrest regarding racism and police violence. (HBO Max has not officially commented on the reasoning behind the move.)

Oscar-winning screenwriter John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) called for Gone With the Wind to be removed from HBO Max for the time being in a Los Angeles Times op-ed published this week, calling it “a film that, when it is not ignoring the horrors of slavery, pauses only to perpetuate some of the most painful stereotypes of people of color.” Others joined Ridley online in asking that the movie be shelved.

HBO Max is not the only network changing its programming in light of the public outcry surrounding the protests: Paramount Network officially cancelled the police docuseries Cops after a more than three-decade run, and A&E Network has pulled new episodes of Live PD. HBO Max has also removed all guns from its new Looney Tunes Cartoons series, apparently in response to U.S. gun violence.

In Robert Kirkman’s original comics, Dwight (Austin Amelio), originally a trusted ally of Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), is shot by Rick Grimes when he tries to revolt over the Commonwealth.

However, the television adaptation has never been entirely faithful to the graphic novels’ original vision, and Dwight’s death in the television series has yet to occur.

Some fans have speculated that morally conflicted characters such as Carol (Melissa McBride) or Alden (Callan McAuliffe) could take the place of Dwight in the show.

Some fans took to the discussion forums on Reddit to present their theories for how the upcoming season will go down.
