“Firefly” was one of those shows I’d sometimes stumble upon late at night — like “Stargate: SG-1” over on the SyFy channel or “Silverhawks” — that really stirred up my love for space operas/westerns. I never did sit down to watch the show in order — at the time I was beholden to whatever episodes were being aired, although I did end up catching multiple viewings of “Serenity.” Back then I had no idea that “Firefly” had barely lasted a season on air before being canceled in 2002, or that the film was Joss Whedon’s last-ditch effort to keep the series alive in some form.
Eventually, Universal acquired the rights from Fox but refused to approve the over $ 100 million budget that was estimated to make it, recommending the production move overseas. But Whedon managed to convince them they could make it locally and under budget — which was set at $ 40 million. To put that into perspective, the prequel “Attack of the Clones” had a budget of $ 115 million.
When production finally finished and the dust settled, “Serenity” was completed for a staggeringly low dollar amount for a sci-fi film, costing Universal only $ 39 million to make. So how did they pull off the kind of special effects you see in the film on such a remarkably small budget? A ton of ingenuity and as many practical effects as they could get away with.

In a lot of ways, the anecdote of a low-budget catalyzing special effects genius is a timeless one in Hollywood. The spirit of the early days of digital effects played out on “Serenity” in much the same way. One of the scenes that presented a major hurdle was the hovercraft chase scene in which the eponymous ship’s crew is chased by animalistic Reavers. “On a big budget feature we’d use a lot of green screen and digital doubles, but we didn’t have that kind of money on this movie,” visual effects supervisor and second unit director Loni Peristere told HowStuffWorks.com. Which meant they had to get really creative.
The goal was to make the sequence feel “contemporary, interesting, and fast-paced” without having to enhance every part of it with digital effects. So to that end, Peristere had a rig built that would hold up the hovercraft 15 feet alongside a towing vehicle. Placing it on two “giant steel arms” they were able to tow the entire craft safely at speeds of 45 miles an hour — which went a long way in creating the rather convincing illusion that it was indeed hovering.
In order to photograph the sequence, Peristere couldn’t rely on the use of a gimbal — which is what was used for the podrace scene in “The Phantom Menace.” Instead, they used a much cheaper plan that involved placing cameras onto the towing rig and a car following behind. All of it makes for a bumpy and chaotic ride, but the actors did seem to enjoy it. Adam Baldwin, whose character gets harpooned and ends up hanging off the hovercraft before being pulled back in by Nathan Fillion’s character, said it was “the most fun I’ve had working in my entire life.”

Rewatching the chase scene from “Serenity,” you can tell there are selective crops being made to hide the extent of the whole rig — set dressers even used trees and shrubs to help hide the practical effects. While the extensive rigging Peristere had made is nonexistent and all the evidence of their creativity is rather elegantly scrubbed clean in post-production. Although even then they had to be pretty frugal about what they edited and how they planned to do it.
“We had to match and replace the road and terrain and the rest of the world that you see when you widen the lens,” Peristere explained. “We took detailed measurements of the road and replaced that road with a computer-generated terrain system that used elements from the scene to mimic what was on the screen.” They even photographed plants to create 3-D renderings that they could then import onto their computer-generated terrain.
And for the Reaver ship that pursues them, only a little CGI was used to enhance what was essentially just an old truck that set special effects director Daniel Sudick acquired and ripped up to use for close-ups. “It also gave us a physical model on location and an eye line for the actors,” Peristere told the Los Angeles Times. “It was very inexpensive, and it provided a lot of value.” But even two decades later, the sequence absolutely holds up to even modern CGI and practical effects magic.

Airlines are to create “no fly” lists for unruly passengers who disrupt flights.
The central government in India are the first country to implement the list to prevent flight attendants being attacked and flights being delayed.
The list has three levels to determine how long the passenger will be banned from flying for.
With the times ranging from three months to two years, it is hoped that it will decrease the number of attacks and delays suffered in the industry.
The no fly list punishments will abide by three levels depending on the severity, with level one categorised as any physical gestures, verbal harassment or being intoxicated and unruly, which will give the smallest ban of three months.
Level two is for passengers being physically abusive, which will increase the punishment up to six months.
However, level three can give a ban of a minimum two years if falling under the category.
The offences consider anything life-threatening so assaults, or damage to the aircraft that would put others at risk.
MoS Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha stated: “India will be the first country in the world to have a national no-fly list based on safety.”
Whilst not yet brought into place in the UK, it could be considered in the future as drunken passenger arrests soar by 50 per cent.
Many flight attendants have reported physical and sexual abuse by passengers on a flight, who are usually inebriated.
Ryanair is the first airline to appeal for the change in which alcohol is served.
The low-cost airline wants to introduce a two drink limit when being served at airport bars.
Ryanair also doesn’t serve alcohol on its flights, due to its short haul nature.
Kenny Jacobs, Ryanair’s chief marketing officer said: “It’s completely unfair that airports can profit from the unlimited sale of alcohol to passengers and leave the airlines to deal with the safety consequences.
“This is an issue which the airports must now address and we are calling for significant changes to prohibit the sale of alcohol at airports, particularly with early morning flights and when flights are delayed.”
Last month it was revealed that Sleight director J.D. Dillard was in talks to direct and co-write a remake of David Cronenberg‘s classic horror remake The Fly. J.D. is reteaming with his Sleight writing partner Alex Theurer to develop the new remake for 201th Century Fox. This morning I got the chance to ask J.D. about his take on the film. Find out what he said about The Fly remake pitch, after the jump.
This morning I got an opportunity to sit down with Dillard to talk about his Sundance sensation Sleight, which is finally about to hit screens nationwide (look out for that full interview next week). At the end of the discussion, I asked about his plans to remake The Fly. Dillard warned me that the project is still in the “early days” of development and that the deal to make the film is still in negotiations, but he seems very excited about the prospect of making it.
For me – and this would be about The Fly, but this is also about Alex and my approach to remakes because post-Sleight that has been the conversation for what a lot of big flashy studio gigs are – no matter what, we want to start with character. I think if you look at a lot of remakes, and the ones that may have not been as successful as others, I think often times the wrong pieces are remade. Having this conversation about bigger projects and IP, we really want to make sure we are following a beating heart first and foremost.
Dillard points to Fox’s new Planet of the Apes series as an example of when it’s done right.
We talk about Apes as one of our favorite franchise remakes because its incredible to see what pieces of those films are being remade. It’s technically the broad conceit that’s being remade, but its a deeply emotional story that carries you through the franchise. It’s so weird: even watching the trailer for the new movie that’s coming out, I can look into Caesar’s eyes and remember the first movie, and that sensation is unparalleled for a franchise reboot for me. It’s like, man this planet is like fucked and everything is wrong and there is war but I can look into Caesar’s eyes and remember the emotion of the James Franco story and that’s important to me. Anywhere we go it’s coming from that point of view, just that we want the beating heart of the story be our North star. And then action, fun and scale can be piled on, but I’ve started to realize my dream film experience is something with big scale that can also make me cry. And not cry for nostalgia, but to be emotionally moved.
Dillard has been thinking long and hard about the movie experience he most wants to experience as a filmgoer and would love to be able to create as a filmmaker:
I made the joke at a screening Q&A the other night but I want to take Mike Mills’ Beginners and match it with something like Guardians of the Galaxy. Now that technically makes no sense, but I want to be really gutted emotionally and feel something but also all the pieces from a blockbuster are there too. That’s the gap that I would love to find a way to close.
So it sounds like it will be a while before we hear more details on this project, but JD is saying all the right things in broad strokes. J.D’s first film Sleight will hit theaters on April 28, 2017, when the filmmaker is already on location of his next movie Sweetheart starring Kiersey Clemons and Emory Cohen.

J.D. Dillard, whose directorial feature debut Sleight was one of the big buzz films of the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, is in talks to direct and co-write a remake of David Cronenberg‘s classic horror film The Fly, which was itself a remake of the 1958 film of the same name. Learn the details, after the jump.
According to Deadline, Dillard will develop a screenplay with his writing partner Alex Theurer for 20th Century Fox. The duo made Sleight together and are about to begin filming a horror/thriller called Sweetheart for Blumhouse starring Kiersey Clemons. I’m a fan of Dillard’s debut film, and noted in my Sundance review that he may have a big career ahead of him:
Dillard is a refreshing new filmmaker who is certainly one to watch. This may be his first feature film, but Dillard has directed some music videos and is also developing a film project for Bad Robot and Paramount Pictures (the details on this project are unknown). When I saw Safety Not Guaranteed at Sundance a few years back, I knew that Colin Trevorrow was about to be tapped for much bigger films (but even I wouldn’t have predicted Star Wars and Jurassic Park sequels). I think its easy to see Dillard will probably also capture the attention of Hollywood genre films — I could definitely see him at the helm of a future Marvel movie.
The official synopsis for Cronenberg’s version of The Fly, which this one will presumably use as a template, is as follows:
Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) is a research scientist, employed by Bartok Sciences, who has invented ‘Telepods’ two matter transmission pods that teleports any object through space from one ‘Telepod’ to the other ‘Telepod.’ But, it is until Seth meets journalist Veronica Quaife (Geena Davis) who inspires Seth to correct the system, that Seth achieves successful teleportation. But something goes horribly wrong, when Seth uses himself as a guinea-pig in a matter transmission experiment, as he teleports himself, unaware his genes have been fused with a house fly that was trapped in the telepod with him. Seth, now finds himself slowly transforming into a terrifying mutant creature known as ‘Brundlefly’ as he finds himself in a fierce battle as his mutated genes begins to take over.
Cronenberg’s film was actually a remake of a 1958 film produced and directed by Kurt Neumann and based on a short story by George Langelaan. The remake of The Fly had a sequel in 1989 starring Eric Stoltz. The original had a sequel of its own in 1959, titled Return of the Fly. Cronenberg had been rather vocal detractor to any proposed remake, but was considering remaking the film himself in 3D in 2009.
I’m not as big a fan of The Fly as most film fanatics, but I do think there is an opportunity to do something fun and different considering visual effects have progressed quite a bit in the last three decades. /Film managing editor Jacob Hall thinks both the original and the remake are masterpieces in their own right, so why not go for a third time? If Dillard can bring something new to the premise, we could have three great Fly movies.
