Enter Jellyvision and Alex, a virtual benefits counselor powered by artificial intelligence to help employees better understand their benefits packages. In the complicated and ever-evolving landscape of health care, Alex shows employees which medical plans can save them the most money based on their personal situation. Signing up for health care becomes efficient and even somewhat enjoyable.
AI has its shortcomings, but Jellyvision has made strides in tackling the minutiae of health insurance. Not bad for a company that made its name with cheeky trivia CD-ROMs, but has executed a remarkable turnabout under CEO Amanda Lannert.
Seth Meyers got rejected from a writing gig at Jellyvision in the ’90s — that’s how good the talent was.
Amanda Lannert
The Chicago-based Jellyvision rose to prominence in the 1990s with games like You Don’t Know Jack and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. The company had a small console game business, but by 2002, it was flailing as gaming giants like Xbox and PlayStation began to take over and Jellyvision couldn’t keep up. At one point, Lannert wrote her own severance letter. “I tasted failure,” Lannert says. “It took me three weeks to tell my parents because I was so ashamed.”
Jellyvision founder Harry Gottlieb was somehow able to raise $ 1.6 million in funding at the last possible second. Lannert, 46, got to work on shifting the company’s strategy and Gottlieb appointed her CEO — a position she still holds today. Despite the pivot from gaming to benefits management, the two aren’t so unrelated. Jellyvision was originally founded as an educational gaming company, in hopes of making boring subjects more engaging for kids. Returning to founding principles, Lannert figured: Why not do the same for adults? By 2017, more than 1,000 companies were using Alex to make decisions affecting $ 110 billion worth of insurance premiums.

Growing up in Charlottesville, Virginia, Lannert had no thoughts of running a company. She originally planned to be a physician, but after spending a year abroad in Edinburgh, Scotland, during college, she got behind on her pre-med courses. “I had the time of my life, drinking beer and chasing boys, but my dad wouldn’t pay for another year of school,” Lannert says, laughing. Never easily defeated, she quickly changed gears and began studying advertising. “I got a job at Leo Burnett and was wearing my shoulder-padded power suit to work the Monday after graduation,” Lannert says.

Five and a half years later, she was recruited to work at Jellyvision by the company’s then president, thanks to a connection with Gottlieb. Lannert worked her way up from the marketing department at a thrilling time for the industry. “Seth Meyers got rejected from a writing gig at Jellyvision in the ’90s — that’s how good the talent was,” she says. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire was one of the best-selling CD-ROM games of all time.

The company’s reboot was a difficult one. Lannert survived with extreme frugality — “You’ll never see an Aeron chair on my watch” — and a clear vision of where to go. Alex launched in 2013 and the feedback has been strong. John Ricci, senior HR specialist at the Hershey Co., has been using Alex to enroll Hershey employees in the company’s benefits program for nearly four years now. “Alex is simple to use,” says Ricci. “Employees trust it because it’s unadulterated advice.”
But artificial intelligence is a tough business. While AI has seen great improvement in decision-making — in 2016, Google’s AlphaGo software beat a top-ranked player of one of the most mathematically complex board games in existence — there’s still room for error. IBM learned that the hard way when it deployed AI bot Watson to help diagnose and recommend cancer treatments. Physicians at several hospitals around the globe found that Watson was still struggling to learn and identify different forms of cancer.
While Lannert and Jellyvision are working with lower stakes, the risk of Alex steering someone in the wrong direction is always there. But Lannert isn’t worried about it. “The biggest risks to me aren’t in machine error but in human error,” she says. Employees might overstate their health, for example, or choose the most expensive plan because they believe it’s best. When machine learning can help us avoid those mistakes, it “becomes our friend,” Lannert says.
Tackling another thorny problem in the modem workplace, Lannert is also a member of Chicago venture capital firm Hyde Park Angels, where she focuses on investing in women-led companies. Lannert says she’s sick of CEOs blaming the lack of women in their organizations on a pipeline problem. “If we change who writes checks, we change who gets checks,” Lannert says. “Women can [invest] and are investing.”
A married mother of three, Lannert jokes that even though the family travels internationally once a year and cooks together every week, her teenage kids “want nothing to do with me.” Her balance comes because she’s “maniacally focused on execution and not easily distracted,” says Troy Henikoff, managing director at Math Venture Partners, who’s known Lannert for 20 years. “She can do anything she wants in life.”
In 2017, Jellyvision was voted best company culture in Chicago by the Chicago Tribune, and Lannert credits a team of “future awesome CEOs here.” All of whom now know a little more than jack about employee benefits.

But that didn’t stop thousands of hockey fans in Seattle from getting out their credit cards to make a deposit on season tickets in a drive aimed at proving just how much the city wants an NHL expansion team.
720 seconds.
That’s how long it took to hit our goal of 10,000 deposits.
We’re now at 25,000 and counting.
Thank you, Seattle.#NHLSeattle
According to the @NHLSeattle twitter account, it took just 12 minutes for the group to reach its goal of selling 10,000 season ticket deposits after sales opened at 10 a.m. PT Thursday.
Over 25,000 deposits were received in less than a half hour for seats in the yet-to-be renovated KeyArena which will only hold 17,500 people.

Fans plunked down either $ 500 per ticket for season tickets or $ 1,000 per ticket for club seats, which are located on the lower-level near centre ice.
Billionaire David Bonderman and filmmaker Jerry Bruckheimer are leading the effort to bring a team to Seattle. The group submitted its expansion application with the National Hockey League two weeks ago.

The expansion franchise process is running concurrent with a $ 660 million remodel of KeyArena being privately financed by the Oak View Group. The group has an aggressive timeline for construction that could have the renovated building open in time for the 2020-21 NHL season.
If Seattle is successful in its expansion bid, the new franchise would bring the league to an even 32 teams with 16 in each conference, while providing a new geographical rival for the Vancouver Canucks.
A new team would also yield a hefty expansion fee — in the neighbourhood of $ 650 million U.S.

Steadfast Pyramid, the first part of the exercise, will last until September 15. It is reportedly “to improve the ability of top-level officers and commanders to plan and lead joint operations,” according to LETA.
Steadfast Pinnacle, the next stage of the drill, will last from September 17 until September 22. Steadfast Pyramid and Steadfast Pinnacle were first held in Latvia in 2011.
British General James Everard, the NATO Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe, is expected to arrive in Latvia to oversee both stages of the exercise, Latvia’s Defense Ministry said, according to LETA.
Not much is known so far about the war games. A NATO fact sheet says Steadfast Pyramid and Steadfast Pinnacle are focused on “further developing the abilities of commanders and senior staff to plan and conduct operations through the application of operational art in decision making.”

Latvia, a former Soviet republic, has seen a major NATO buildup over the past months. Recently, NATO deployed four multinational battlegroups in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland as part of Enhanced Forward Presence (EFP). These combat-ready battlegroups, led by the UK, Canada, Germany, and the US respectively, are meant to demonstrate “the strength of the transatlantic bond.”
A 1,100-strong battlegroup led by Canada is stationed in Latvia, comprising a number of mechanized infantry units as well as a tank company and some support elements, according to NATO.
Poland and the Baltic states are calling for a stronger military presence in their countries, claiming it is necessary to deter “assertive” Russia.
Lithuania, another Baltic state, has suggested developing a “military Schengen project that would facilitate the movement of troops in Europe.”
Earlier this week, Lithuanian Defense Minister Raimundas Karoblis said the Benelux countries – Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg – as well as Finland and Estonia, support the plan, which includes “simplifying procedures and investing in infrastructure.”
Moscow has consistently said the ongoing buildup threatens Russian and European security. In mid-July, Russian envoy to NATO Alexander Grushko said the alliance is pushing forward for “an intensive mastering of the potential theater of military operations, accompanied by the development of the necessary infrastructure.”

From July to November, NATO will hold 15 drills complementing each other, “which are held in the same operative field and aimed at providing a vast range of support measures,” Grushko added.
Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier said that Moscow will not remain silent facing emerging threats on its western borders. NATO’s saber-rattling leaves Russia no other choice than to “give a suitable response to all of these actions,” he said, noting that Moscow’s countermeasures will be “much cheaper,” if not quite as technologically advanced, Putin told award-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone.

People are flocking to a village in northeastern India after a goat born with just one eye, one ear and an underdeveloped nose continues to confound vets’ grim expectations.
The goat, born on May 10 in the state of Assam, has a rare condition called cyclopia, in which only one eye socket forms. The condition is usually caused by genetic defects, but has been known to occur in cases where the mother consumed toxins while pregnant.
People have been visiting the village to see the kid labelled a “miracle” by owner Mukhuri Das.
“I was shocked. It’s like a miracle and people have been coming to our place to see this baby goat,” Das told Cater News.
“It’s my responsibility to take care of the baby goat. I have been feeding him like a normal goat… It might be something from God that the baby goat was born in our house.”
Local vets are unsure what caused the condition in this goat, but predicted it would die within days, National Geographic reports. However, under the careful watch of its owner, the kid has already far outlived the dire prognosis.
Cyclopia affects one in 16,000 animals. Last November, another one-eyed goat made headlines around the world after being born in a rural area in the Middle East.

Despite both candidates being neck-and-neck in the first round of the French election, according to preliminary results, it appears that many ruling politicians and eurocrats are not shying away from openly endorsing centrist Macron ahead of the decisive vote on May 7.
Conservative candidate François Fillon conceded defeat before the results were officially announced, claiming sole responsibility for it. He added that he would vote for Macron in round two, arguing that “there is no other choice but to vote against the far right.”
Socialist party candidate Benoît Hamon also called on voters to defeat Le Pen’s National Front while also taking full responsibility for his party’s dismal performance in the election.

Independent leftist candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon stayed impartial, saying that he will not endorse anyone in the second round, adding that he will respect the official results when they are announced.
Melenchon was just one leading figure distancing himself from both candidates.
François Asselineau, candidate of the Republican People’s Union, lashed out at Macron, calling him “a puppet of the financial oligarchy,” while addressing his supporters on Sunday night. He was of a similar unfavorable opinion about Marine Le Pen, saying, “It is the Le Pen family that keeps the system in place.” The chairman of the Christian Democratic Party, Jean-Frédéric Poisson, also refused to endorse either of the candidates, calling both “disaster scenarios” on Twitter.
Meanwhile, French authorities and members of the ruling Socialist party expressed their support for Macron, a former socialist. Macron stepped down from the post of Economy Minister under François Hollande’s government to join a bid in the elections as an independent candidate.
Hollande called Macron to congratulate him on qualifying for the second round, Reuters reported, citing the Elysees Palace.
Socialist Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve also called for support for Macron in a lengthy statement.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault called to mobilize and vote for Macron in round two of the election.
A call to “block the extreme right and vote for Macron” was joined by Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of Paris, where, according to preliminary results, Le Pen suffered a heavy defeat, gathering just under 5 percent of vote.
In the meantime, former Prime Minister Manuel Valls also joined the pro-Macron chorus. Valls, who quit his post for the presidential race, was beaten by Benoit Hamon during Socialist primary elections.
German politicians were one of the first to show their clear favorite in the French presidential election as preliminary results started to emerge.
Vice Chancellor and Minister for Foreign Affairs Sigmar Gabriel wrote that he is glad that “the only Pro-European candidate [Macron]” is leading in the French elections.
A German MP and Angela Merkel’s chief of staff, Peter Altmaier, stated that the result shows that “France and Europe can jointly win!”
German government spokesman Steffen Seibert also tweeted his support for Macron’s pro-EU and social market economy platform, wishing him “All the best for the next 2 weeks.”
Gut, dass @EmmanuelMacron mit seinem Kurs für eine starke EU + soziale Marktwirtschaft Erfolg hatte. Alles Gute für die nächsten 2 Wochen.
— Steffen Seibert (@RegSprecher) April 23, 2017
While there was no element of surprise in EU officials being in favor of a pro-block candidate as opposed to the Eurosceptic Le Pen, who has promised to either hold a Frexit referendum as part of her campaign or renegotiate France’s membership terms, some took it a step further in their praise of Macron.
The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Federica Mogherini, went as far as calling Macron “the hope and future of our generation.”
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker also “congratulated Emmanuel Macron on his result in the first round and wished him all the best for the next round,” Juncker’s spokesman, Margaritis Schinas, said on Twitter.
There has been a “massive media campaign in favor of Macron” before the first round of the election, and it will only become more intense ahead of the May 7 vote, believes writer and political commentator Jean Bricmont.
“There’ll be massive propaganda and everybody you see… [Francois] Fillon is behind Macron. The socialists [are] behind Macron,” he told RT in Paris, describing a wave of reactions to the preliminary results of the vote.
Bricmont, who says he is no supporter of the “divisive” Le Pen that may be “obsessed with Islam” at the same time laments the amount of demonization and Nazi-labeling that he says is being used in order to sway voters in favor of Macron. Many French people are casting their votes for Macron “in order to block [Marine] Le Pen,” Bricmont believes.
“Macron hasn’t made any promise of anything… His meetings are relatively empty. He is a complete product of the media,” argues Bricmont, who is pessimistic about the candidate winning as he brands him a potential “disaster for France.”

This victory would be “the revenge of Hillary Clinton, the revenge of the EU … and a revenge against Brexit,” he says.
Michael Patrick Flanagan, former member of the US House of Representatives, told RT he believes the distaste of the European establishment toward Le Pen can be attributed to their desire to hold on to privileges that come with power.
“These are people in the establishment whose fortunes, whose lives, whose position in the world is based upon the existence of the EU,” Flanagan said of those European politicians who are being especially vocal in their opposition to Le Pen as the potential French head of state.
“They like those positions, they like being in charge, they like being the ones calling the shots and they don’t like this populist movement, people that might be interested in running their own lives,” he said, adding that what the establishment dread the most is the overhaul of the existing bureaucratic order.
“This is dangerous to them and the positions they like to be in, so they screw on the warmest smile they can, they brandish their credentials and they endorse on of their own to continue the status quo which is to lord over the people there,” Flanagan said, arguing that despite the odds similarly being against Le Pen, she is capable of a breakthrough in the second round, citing the examples of last year’s Brexit vote and the US election.
“I think she can get through. It is the people who will come to the vote in the end.”
