Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising?

This week we steal some art, keep our comedy clean, get in the ring with a woman who’s ready to box,, make some deadly New Year’s resolutions and more.

Ruben Brandt, Collector

I don’t even know what to make of director Milorad Krstic’s animated opus, but this trailer hums with creativity.

Ruben Brandt, a famous psychotherapist, is forced to steal 13 paintings from the world’s renowned museums and private collections to prevent his suffering from terrible nightmares he has as a result of subliminal messaging he received as a child. Accompanied by his four patients, he and his band of thieves strike regularly and with great success: the Louvre, Tate, Uffizi, Hermitage, the Museum of Modern Art. “The Collector” quickly becomes the most wanted criminal in the world. Gangsters and headhunters chase him around the world while the reward for his capture keeps rising, approaching a hundred million dollars. A cartel of insurance companies entrusts Mike Kowalski, a private detective and leading expert on art theft, to solve the “Collector Case.”

The trailer is a Technicolor fever dream. The animation is different than anything else we’ve seen in some time, the narrative is wonderfully bizarre, and the way it pulls in artistic flourishes to inform its visual palette is an inspired choice. Good, bad, or indifferent, it’s attempting to be something artistically unique.

Stand Up and Away! With Brian Regan

This trailer is just fun. Brian Regan is known as the king of clean, but I will admit that this trailer made me laugh. In an era where some comedians are trying way too hard, and some that are just a little too “alt,” it’s just nice to have someone like Regan who is interested in just being funny. Somehow that’s very soothing, and this trailer exudes that confidence.

New Year, New You

I am ready to rocket past the holidays, and director Sophia Takal appears that she wants to ring in the New Year with some blood.

A social media star celebrates New Year’s Eve with her childhood friends, but a fun game of secrets turns into a terrifying fight for survival.

What makes this so much fun is just how absurd the premise is in the first place. It’s a Blumhouse joint so you know there’s a high concept involved, but the real satisfaction is that this is going to a lean, tight story. It’s not going to end up on any Best Of list, but when you’re in the mood for something light and airy it looks like this could deliver.

Float Like a Butterfly

Knowing that director Carmel Winters has the producer backing of the folks who gave Once and Sing Street to the world is the stamp of approval enough for me. It helps that the trailer is fantastic, but I also like the story behind it.

From the producers of Once and Sing Street, Float Like a Butterfly is a powerful and timely story of a girl’s fight for freedom and belonging. In a gender-reversal of classic film Billy Elliot, 15-year-old Frances has to fight for the right to fight back. Raised in roadside camps in rural Ireland, Frances wants to champion her people inside the boxing ring and out, like her idol Muhammad Ali. But society is determined to break her spirit and destroy her way of life. And her father, once her greatest ally, is too defeated himself to imagine any better for his daughter. But Frances was not born to be broken. In the mother of all fights, she must dig deep to find in herself the Champion her father once knew her to be.

The movie indeed isn’t as warm and cuddly as Once or Sing Street, there is an obvious lack of pop hits, but the story is emotionally and compelling enough that this is a must-see for me.

Slut in a Good Way

When it comes to deconstructing the young adult experience, it appears that director Sophie Lorain has it pretty well nailed.

Following in the footsteps of classic independent films like Clerks and To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, Slut in a Good Way follows three teenage girls exploring their first taste of freedom: Charlotte, the recently heartbroken, Megane, the anti-love anarchist, and Aube, a virgin who dreams of love — all three smitten by the guys at the “Toy Depot.” After applying for their first part-time job at the store during this one fateful summer, the three girls experience for the very first time what it is like to make their own decisions and their resulting consequences.

The use of subtitles here is incredibly refreshing and adds a layer of youthfulness to the narrative. We enter these young women’s lives in a way that feels honest, direct, but also humorous. The pacing is superb and sets up for what looks like a delightful yarn.

Bowel cancer warning – does your poo look like this? Should your stool sink or float? https://briefnews.eu/bowel-cancer-warning-does-your-poo-look-like-this-should-your-stool-sink-or-float-2/ https://briefnews.eu/bowel-cancer-warning-does-your-poo-look-like-this-should-your-stool-sink-or-float-2/#respond Sun, 20 May 2018 05:09:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bowel-cancer-warning-does-your-poo-look-like-this-should-your-stool-sink-or-float-2/

Bowel cancer is one of the most common types of cancer to be diagnosed in the UK, according to the NHS.

Most people diagnosed with the cancer are over 60 years old.

Bowel cancer symptoms include a persistent change in bowel habit, or a persistent abdominal pain.

But, the symptoms of bowel cancer can be difficult to spot, and may not necessarily make you feel unwell.

One of the ways to check whether you’re at risk of bowel cancer is to check your poo after using the toilet.

Almost half of people in the UK have never checked their poo, according to the Taymount Clinic.

If your poo is dark red or brown, it could be a sign of bowel cancer.

The darker red colour comes from blood high up in the bowel.

If there’s a bright red tinge to your stool, it could be caused by haemorrhoids.

A healthy stool should also sink, the clinic added.

“Your poo shouldn’t normally float,” the Taymount Clinic told Express.co.uk.

“If your gut is doing its job, you should be digesting oils and fats which will make your stool sink.

“The odd floater is not an issue, but if it is a common occurrence this can be a sign of bad digestive health.”

The ideal poo should look like a smooth, soft sausage, according to Ramsay Health Care UK.

It should be about an inch in diameter, and about 12 inches long.

The exact cause of bowel cancer isn’t known, according to the NHS.

But, you could be at higher risk of the condition if you’re over 60 years old, are overweight, or eat a lot of processed meat.

The NHS offers two types of bowel cancer screening for adults in England.

A faecal occult blood test requires a home-stool testing kit, while a bowel scope screening involves using a thin instrument to look inside the bowel.

Speak to a GP if you’re worried about the symptoms of bowel cancer.

Trump appears to float a major shakeup in the Russia investigation during Fox News interview https://briefnews.eu/trump-appears-to-float-a-major-shakeup-in-the-russia-investigation-during-fox-news-interview/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-appears-to-float-a-major-shakeup-in-the-russia-investigation-during-fox-news-interview/#respond Fri, 23 Jun 2017 07:41:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-appears-to-float-a-major-shakeup-in-the-russia-investigation-during-fox-news-interview/ Donald TrumpAP Photo/Richard Drew, File

President Donald Trump during a Fox News interview on Friday appeared to be making a case for getting Robert Mueller pulled off of the investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 US election.

Excerpts from Trump’s interview with “Fox and Friends” released Thursday night showed an adamant Trump criticizing Mueller, a former FBI director, for his past association with James Comey, the FBI head that Trump fired in May as the Russia investigation gained traction.

“Well he’s very, very good friends with Comey which is very bothersome … we’re going to have to see,” Trump said of Mueller. The president also accused Mueller of hiring Hillary Clinton supporters to oversee portions of the investigation.

The Trump-Russia inquiry has grown dramatically since Mueller took the reins last month, and now includes probes of possible financial connections between the Trump campaign and Russian operatives. Mueller is also reportedly investigating Trump for possible obstruction of justice, due to the president’s alleged lobbying of federal law-enforcement officials who are involved in the investigation.

Trump told Fox News’ Ainsley Earhardt, “there has been no obstruction, there has been no collusion,” and the president accused Comey of leaking information to reporters.

James ComeyZach Gibson/Getty ImagesTrump, in the first days of his presidency, had demanded Comey’s loyalty during a private dinner at the White House. Comey refused.

Trump also asked Comey to “let go” of the FBI’s investigation of his former national security adviser Michael Flynn, according to memos Comey wrote that documented the encounters.

After Trump fired Comey, he told NBC News’ Lester Holt that he had the Russia investigation in mind when he made his decision.

Since then, Trump and his surrogates have made public statements that suggested the administration was floating the possibility of a major shakeup in the Russia probe.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich called Mueller the “tip of a deep state spear aimed at” Trump, after it was reported that Mueller was adding obstruction of justice to his ongoing investigation of Trump and his campaign.

Several other Trump allies echoed Gingrich’s remarks, including conservative commentator Ann Coulter who said Attorney General Jeff Sessions “should fire Mueller,” and radio host Bill Mitchell, who suggested Mueller and Comey may have “colluded” and said Mueller should “immediately” step down.

Those rumblings, among others, were seen as a move to discredit Mueller’s findings before the investigation is finished.

Your Next Vacation: Float Like a Local Down This Swiss River https://briefnews.eu/your-next-vacation-float-like-a-local-down-this-swiss-river/ https://briefnews.eu/your-next-vacation-float-like-a-local-down-this-swiss-river/#respond Tue, 20 Jun 2017 22:54:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/your-next-vacation-float-like-a-local-down-this-swiss-river/ Come summer, the Swiss — an Alpine folk famed for their organizational skills (precision watches aren’t built from slapdash craftsmanship) and their fondness for adhering to the rules — and especially the residents of the capital of Bern, let loose and take to the water en masse, bobbing, floating and laughing for miles as the Aare River’s swift currents swoop them downstream.

I’ve ripped down the Aare several times, watching kids leap off the Schönausteg Bridge near the Dählhölzli Zoo, drop into the water and then, with me and the rest of the city, race toward the heart of Bern. “It’s an amazing feeling, being in the flow of the Aare River,” says Nina Burri, an exceptionally bendy Swiss contortionist (and an America’s Got Talent finalist), model and actress. Growing up in Bern, she could walk five minutes to the Aare, then simply plunge in for loads of summertime fun.

The Aare is a Swiss river through and through. Originating from glaciers in the Bernese Alps, it’s the longest river contained entirely within the borders of Switzerland. According to Bern tour guide Ursula Arregger, the Aare’s topographical advantages motivated Duke Berchtold V in the late 12th century to found the city.

While zipping down the pristine green water, it’s easy to strike up a chat with fellow swimming sapiens drifting alongside you.

Motorized boats aren’t allowed on the Aare. “The Bernese are very careful about keeping the river clean,” Arregger says. While zipping down the pristine green water, with or without a flotation device, it’s easy to strike up a chat with fellow swimming sapiens drifting alongside you. Burri cautions that when floating without a raft or tube, you need to be a strong swimmer, able to fight the currents and to yank your bulk out at just the right spot. “Make sure you do it with an experienced friend at first,” she suggests, which makes sense, because it’s communal, repeatable and a blast — plus a great way to immerse yourself in the local scene.

Aare River

Upstream, the Aare flows through the lakes of Interlaken and the town of Thun before hitting Bern. It then snakes down to the canton of Aargau (named for the river), eventually flowing into the Rhine. There, “the Aare is the bigger river,” says Steffen Schweizer, head of water ecology at KWO hydropower company. “The good old Rhine should have the name Aare,” he adds, rooting for the Swiss-contained waterway.

In Thun, day-trippers can rent rubber rafts and go for a leisurely paddle — or give themselves over to the whims of the current — for several hours, hopping out, as Burri recommends, at the Eichholz campground, a popular spot for riverside picnics. If you want to “just keep swimming” like Disney’s Dory, you can pop out by the Marzili swimming pool downtown, near the Federal Palace, home of the Swiss Parliament. Then walk back to Eichholz — or get a friend to drive you even farther upstream — and plop back in.

Whether by raft, tube or just in a swimsuit — perhaps with a cold beer in your hand (I did that, but don’t follow my bad example) — floating down the Aare River is a Swiss treat, bringing all manner of people together to splash and play in glacier-fed waters.

Go there: Aare River

  • Be Safe: Not sure of your swimming abilities? At the very least, strap a life vest on, as the currents are very strong. And never float down the river alone.
  • Longer Float Trips: Guiding companies in Thun can provide you with experienced river guides, rafts, helmets and pretty much anything else you might need for a longer float or a picnic by the shore.
  • Showing Off: If you’re keen to do backflips or forward flips into the Aare, the Schönausteg Bridge is the perfect platform to jump off and highlight your acrobatic skills.

THIS is where you can get the summer’s MUST HAVE flamingo pool float for just £6.99 https://briefnews.eu/this-is-where-you-can-get-the-summers-must-have-flamingo-pool-float-for-just-6-99/ https://briefnews.eu/this-is-where-you-can-get-the-summers-must-have-flamingo-pool-float-for-just-6-99/#respond Thu, 18 May 2017 20:45:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/this-is-where-you-can-get-the-summers-must-have-flamingo-pool-float-for-just-6-99/

The flamingo pool float was one of the favourite accessories of summer last year.

Celebrities were seen lounging in the inflatables, in the shape of beautiful exotic birds.

Sunnylife sold their inflatable version on ASOS, which cost a whopping £58.

That’s pretty steep for a blow up bird.

However, now you can make like Hollywood millionaires such as Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber for only £6.99.

For just under £7 you can have your own flamingo float to pose in for Instagram snaps or chill on, summer cocktail in hand.

This deal is available at German supermarket Aldi stores from today.

There is a limited amount however, and Aldi have warned “Once they’re gone, they’re gone.”

Aldi is rolling out other great deals this summer.

A rose wine costing £5.99 from the budget supermarket has beaten bottles nearly three times the price at the world’s most prestigious wine awards.

The discount retailer picked up a total of 28 individual awards and accolades, with the pick of the bunch being its Exquisite Collection Cotes de Provence Rosé.

Lidl, on the other hand, is selling the UK’s best cheese and smoked salmon for half the price of M&S, so the Grocer Awards have claimed.

Morrisons has been voted the worst shop on the UK high street according an annual survey of shoppers.

Discount superstore Morrisons has been voted the worst shop on the UK high street according to Which? users.

Customer scores given are based on satisfaction and the likelihood of recommending each shop, and Which? revealed those that you should avoid visiting.

Which? asked more than 10,000 consumers about their shopping experience at 100 major retailers.

New ‘It’ Image Lives in the Gutter, Promises That We All Float Down Here https://briefnews.eu/new-it-image-lives-in-the-gutter-promises-that-we-all-float-down-here/ https://briefnews.eu/new-it-image-lives-in-the-gutter-promises-that-we-all-float-down-here/#respond Thu, 23 Mar 2017 17:53:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/new-it-image-lives-in-the-gutter-promises-that-we-all-float-down-here/ it gutter scene image

Andrés Muschietti‘s adaptation It has to impress on several fronts. It has to please the fans of Stephen King‘s original book, which may be the best horror novel ever written. It has to grab those who were traumatized by the TV miniseries adaptation from the early ’90s. It has to be an effective horror movie for those completely unfamiliar with this story. So yeah: no pressure.

New Line has released a new image from the film and it’s from a moment that will be very familiar to fans of the book and viewers of the original miniseries. Heck, even the newbies may know a thing or two about this one, as it’s probably the most famous scene in It.

Released by Empire, the image finds young Georgie Denbrough (Jackson Robert Scott) kneeling by a storm drain and having a face-to-face encounter with Pennywise the Dancing Clown (Bill Skarsgård), one guise of the nameless, ageless creature that has been hunting children in Derry, Maine for generations. This is the opening scene of the book and one of the opening scenes in the miniseries and it leaves quite the impression. Let’s just say that things don’t end well for Georgie and that his older brother, Bill (Jaeden Lieberher), has a very personal reason to get involved in hunting down this creature.

It gutter image

While it’s a creepy image at first glance, it’s the second image released from It to suffer from what appears to be poor Photoshop. It’s not as egregious that that “pipe” image (seen above), which is more comical than frightening, but Skarsgård’s head does look like it was just dropped into an existing image. This doesn’t spell doom and gloom (many publicity shots don’t represent the finished film at all!), but it would be nice to see a proper trailer and discover what this movie will actually look and feel like.

This Scene is Vital

If done right, this moment will be a punch to the gut. This scene, set in the ’50s in the original book and miniseries and moved to the ’80s for Muschietti’s film, begins with young Georgie playing outside in the middle of torrential rainstorm. He encounters an odd sight: a clown in the rain gutter. He invites Georgie to come closer, promising rides and games and fun, insisting mysteriously that everything “floats.” And then, from page 15 of my copy of It:

George’s shoulder socked against the cement of the sub and Dave Gardener, who had stayed home from his job at The Shoeboat that day because of the flood, saw only a small boy in a yellow rain slicker, a small boy who was screaming and writhing in the gutter with muddy water surfing over his face and making his screams sound bubbly.

“Everything down here floats,” that chucking, rotten voice whispered, and suddenly there was a ripping noise and a flaring sheet of agony, and George Denbrough knew no more.

The original miniseries isn’t quite as visceral or upsetting – it lacks King’s unsettling prose and has to deal with the television restrictions of 1990 – but it’s still one of the scenes that people of a specific age point toward as the source of countless nightmares. Even book readers like me have a hard time picturing this scene without Tim Curry’s voice:

It’s not surprising to see that this scene is in the movie and it’s definitely not surprising that the marketing is leaning on such familiar imagery. I only hope that Muschietti and Skarsgård, whose more timeless Pennywise is a far cry from the more traditional clown we’ve seen previously, can live up to the previous versions.

It opens on September 8, 2017. Stephen King says he likes the movie, but he also hates Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining.

Float lots of different objects above this magical levitating base https://briefnews.eu/float-lots-of-different-objects-above-this-magical-levitating-base/ https://briefnews.eu/float-lots-of-different-objects-above-this-magical-levitating-base/#respond Wed, 15 Mar 2017 08:14:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/float-lots-of-different-objects-above-this-magical-levitating-base/ We’ve seen quite a few levitating gadgets and gizmos float through the doors of DT in recent months, but while many feature a single levitating object, this latest offering from Levitating Design Labs lets you choose from a variety of items to suspend in mid-air.

Powered by electromagnetic suspension technology, the Levitating X collection features, for example, several 3D-printed decorative pieces, a drinking glass, a pot for your favorite plant, and a small pillow for your watch, jewelry, or other such diminutive item.

But you could probably have the most fun with the levitating plate, or a set of them if you have the cash to splash. It’d certainly impress any party guests when they walk in and see their first course hovering above the dining table. Or possibly freak them out a bit.

You have two different levitation bases to choose from. The larger one is wireless and incorporates a rechargeable battery, while the second, slimmer offering requires an AC power source.

As the video below shows, it’s easy to set up the Levitating X. Simply slot in the proprietary levitation assist plate. Next, place the object you want to levitate onto the base before gently removing the plate. It’ll then float above the base, at which point you can give it a gentle tap to make it slowly rotate.

The Chicago-based startup behind Levitation X says it opted for a square base rather than a round one because the former can be easily placed side-by-side with multiple bases, “allowing for the future creation of large-surface levitating products.”

More: Levitate your phone while you charge it wirelessly with the OvRcharge

The team is looking for Kickstarter funding to the tune of $ 35,000 to make Levitation X a reality. Early-bird offers include the base and a plate for $ 150, which is $ 100 off the expected retail price. The same deal also applies to the plant pot and pillow.

For $ 250 you can choose from one of the decorative pieces — that’s $ 150 off the expected retail cost. There’s also the chance to choose extra objects for between $ 20 and $ 130 a piece, and the aim is to add new products every month.

Assuming the team reaches its funding target, the kit will start shipping in June, 2017.
