Talitha Andrade is from Vitória da Conquista, the world’s 11th-most dangerous city. Her hometown is in Bahia state, which has Brazil’s third-largest number of female homicides and has the fifth worst female homicide rate nationwide. She now lives in Salvador, Brazil’s first capital and the cradle of Afro-Brazilian culture, where religion-driven patriarchal hierarchies still dominate society.

In 2016, 5,227 women in Brazil were killed, with 621 categorized as femicides, according to the Fórum Brasileiro de Segurança Pública. For many, the recent murder of Rio de Janeiro politician and activist Marielle Franco, which many believe was politically motivated, has worsened Brazil’s already ultra-violent climate. Violence against the LGBTQ community is also a fact of life — Bahia has the third-largest absolute number of deaths out of a national record 445 in 2017, according to Grupo Gay da Bahia, the go-to nonprofit for LGBTQ violence figures in Brazil.

When Andrade started her work 10 years ago, she never imagined Brazil would burst open socially and politically like it has, making her work even more relevant. What’s more, she never imagined that a mayor in a city like São Paulo, among the world’s largest cities, and Latin America’s economic powerhouse, would wipe out a thriving street art scene by forbidding new works from giving life to the concrete-asphalt-brick landscapes — a blow to street art nationwide.

Following continued police harassment as she graffitied Salvador’s walls, Andrade began going out to paint with friends who could protect her — she felt threatened as a lesbian and as a woman. For that reason, she also decided to set up shop, as other artists have, at Forte do Barbalho, once a military fort where at least 100 political prisoners, including an estimated dozen women, were held and tortured during Brazil’s 1964-85 military dictatorship. Now Andrade can design her work before hitting the streets, but, paradoxically, she does so in a place that has a deep history of male violence and oppression.

Congress scrambled on Thursday — hours before the government is set to enter a partial shutdown — as leaders looked to spearhead a massive two-year budget deal through both chambers.

The deal would extend the current level of federal funding until March 23, allowing congressional appropriators time to craft the details of a longer-term plan. It would also bump limits on defense and nondefense spending by just under $ 300 billion combined over the next two years.

George, a 74-year-old retired training consultant, was told to “stop flirting” with Vixen Jenny Ryan by Bradley Walsh who sensed it may get out of hand.

The 57-year-old stepped in to put an end to proceedings after the contestant offered to go tandem riding.

Introducing herself, Jenny teased: “Good afternoon pedal power George,” as the hopeful replied: “Hello Miss Vixen.”

As Bradley looked shocked, Jenny gushed: “Oh hello! Electric or not, you’ll be on your bike in just a few minutes.”

With a cheeky wink, George replied: “Well I’ve got a tandem, you can come with me.”

Jenny then smiled: “I’ve got a show to finish George and you’ll be off,” as he added: “Fair dinkum.”

Abruptly stepping in, Bradley quipped: “Alright, stop flirting!”

Later in the show, Bradley asked George about his favourite type of films.

He asked: “What’s your favourite type of movie then? I love a cowboy. Cowboys?”

George then revealed: “Comedy, oh I love cowboys! John Wayne.”

As the host delved deeper, he asked about war films, something George did not like.

The contestant explained: “I’m not so keen on that. I’m not keen on murder and killing and stuff.”

Bradley then teased: “Yeah, it’s unnecessary. And kissing. I don’t like kissing either. Yuk,” prompting George to giggle: “Well, it depends who you’re kissing. Sorry about that!”

(Reuters) – Oil prices extended gains on Tuesday after Saudi Arabia pledged to curb exports from next month and OPEC called on several members to boost compliance with output cuts to help rein in oversupply and tackle flagging prices.

Brent crude futures were up 68 cents at $ 49.28 a barrel by 1054 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures rose 64 cents to $ 46.98 a barrel.

At a meeting in the Russian city of St. Petersburg on Monday, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and non-OPEC producers discussed extending their deal to cut output by 1.8 million barrels per day (bpd) beyond March 2018 if necessary.

Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih said that his country would limit its crude exports to 6.6 million bpd in August, almost 1 million bpd below the levels of a year ago.

“But the most concrete indication coming out of the meeting was that Nigeria would agree to implement production adjustments,” Vienna-based consultancy JBC Energy said.

Nigeria voluntarily agreed to join the deal by capping or cutting its output from 1.8 million bpd once it stabilises at that level.

But in a sign that production from the OPEC member remains susceptible to disruptions, Royal Dutch Shell’s Nigerian subsidiary said on Monday that it had shut its 180,000 bpd Trans Niger pipeline because of a leak on July 21.

Ministers at the meeting also highlighted the importance of compliance.

Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said an additional 200,000 bpd of oil could be removed from the market if there is 100 percent compliance with the OPEC-led deal.

OPEC said that stocks held by industrial nations had fallen by 90 million barrels in the first six months of the year but were still 250 million barrels above the five-year average, which is the target level for OPEC and non-OPEC members.

“In our view … these meetings were aimed at saving face and diverting the market’s attention away from Iraq’s poor compliance, shale’s resilience and Libya’s and Nigeria’s markedly higher output,” Barclays said.

Prices were also supported by a warning from Halliburton’s executive chairman that growth in North America’s rig count was “showing signs of plateauing”, representing a possible threat to U.S. shale oil production.

China’s crude imports will exceed 400 million tonnes (8 million bpd) this year and are likely to grow by a double-digit percentage next year, a Sinopec Group executive said.

Revealing his favourite-ever guest on his hit chat show, Parkinson admitted that Dame Edna Everage was at the top of his list.

The television favourite also acknowledged modern day criticism for his flirtatious interviews.

Accused of on-air flirting, Parkinson laughed: “Which I plead guilty.”

Speaking to Express.co.uk, he continued: “I have to confess, I fancied her quite a lot actually. We had her on about 15 times?

“I think Barry [Humphries] is a genius. An extraordinarily remarkable guy. Dame Edna is one of the greatest comedy creations of all time.

“Like Billy Connolly, this always makes me laugh. Of course, she’s impenetrable. Once he puts a wig on, he doesn’t exist. The voice changes and that’s the way it works.”

Comparing the Australian character to Sacha Baron Cohen’s creations, Parkinson admitted that he didn’t enjoy the latter due to being scripted.

Parkinson explained: “Ali G was awful [to film with]. Everything was scripted.” 

Contrasting with Humphries’ creations, he said: “We worked together for a long time so we got to know each other and I adore working with him.

“The difference is that she had the genius of working with other people. The trick with her is to put other people on with her. She didn’t need a script, she’d make her own script up.”

The 82-year-old journalist and television star also gave a nod to the older generation.

He said: “I liked to get older people on the show too. We felt neglected, ignored and bypassed. I just learned an awful lot from them and I adored their company.

“They come to a point in their life, old people, where they don’t give a damn. That’s when you catch them and they’re funny and all of those things.”

It comes as and coping with his illness.

Dating app Feeld released a Slack plug-in enabling coworkers to express mutual affection for each other, and a few days later, Slack has revealed it doesn’t make the cut. Feeld founder Dimo Trifonov told The Atlantic he’s been informed the app will not be listed in Slack’s directory because of its developer policy, which says “We will remove Apps that we consider to be inappropriate for use in the workplace or that negatively impact the user experience on Slack. We reserve the right to remove or refuse any app that contains content that we believe violates the letter or spirit of these guidelines.”

Despite the sudden popularity of messenger bots for all kinds of activities, this always seemed like a bad idea for the workplace. When you consider that it could only work if an administrator turned it on (note: it can still be installed, if you go through the step of downloading it from Feeld’s website first), and opened the company up to potential responsibility for whatever might ensue, it seems doubtful that anyone would make this mistake. On Twitter, Trifonov claimed installs in “over 150 companies and over 250 matches,” if you’ll believe that.

Now, the app is hidden away, Feeld has gotten the publicity from its stunt and we can all move on.
