Former Labour MP for Don Valley Caroline Flint hit out at Ken Livingstone’s “denial” over why voters chose not to support Labour last week. She said senior Labour members are blaming everyone else. Ms Flint, who lost her seat after 22 years, explained Labour will only win elections when they have a leader the public believe in. Speaking on ITV, Ms Flint said: “The denial that people like Ken express about anti-Semitism, about the fact people didn’t buy into the Corbyn project, the politics is, to be honest, a classic response of those on the left-wing of our party when they want to try and put the blame on everybody else. “Blame the media, blame the establishment, blame this, blame that, blame the other. “The truth is that Labour wins elections when we’ve got a leader people believe in and a vision that people can buy into. “We’ve done that successfully in the past and clearly we’re not going it now.” READ MORE: Iain Duncan Smith accuses Labour’s Momentum group of being a ‘cancer’ Mr Livingstone disagreed as he previously said Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn had been working on getting anti-Semites out of the party. Their clash comes as Ms Flint revealed how she personally feels after losing her seat. Piers Morgan asked: “You looked quite emotional yesterday, you’re holding it together today but underneath you’re very wounded and sad about this. “How do you feel personally about losing your job and seat in Parliament over something that was out of your control?” Ms Flint’s latest intervention came after she was embroiled in a row with shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry over claims the Corbyn ally described voters in the north “stupid”. Ms Thornberry, who is believed to be eyeing a bid to succeed Mr Corbyn, was forced to deny the “total and utter lie” on Sunday and was understood to be consulting lawyers. Ms Flint, who lost her seat in the former stronghold of Don Valley during the catastrophic election for Labour, claimed Ms Thornberry had told a colleague: “I’m glad my constituents aren’t as stupid as yours.” The row came as shadow chancellor John McDonnell tried to take the flak for the defeat, saying “I own this disaster”, and as Mr Corbyn also apologised for Labour’s worst result since 1935.

Health officials in Michigan this week honored Dr. Eden Wells with the state’s top award for an eminent career in public health—despite that Wells is currently facing several charges in connection with the Flint water crisis, including involuntary manslaughter.
On Wednesday, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) announced that Wells was awarded the Roy R. Manty Distinguished Service Award from the Michigan Association for Local Public Health (MALPH) and the Michigan Public Health Association (MPHA).
The award is described by the two associations as the “highest individual award given by the local public health community.”

Elon Musk has again inserted himself in the news cycle, and we’ve got an important update for Sonos owners. Plus, you’ll want to see this trailer for Netflix’s sci-fi thriller Extinction.
AirPlay 2 makes Sonos the best audio option for most iPhone owners
After spending a week or so testing out a beta version of the software, Nathan Ingraham said that pretty much all Sonos owners who use iOS devices will get a lot out of this update.
Elon Musk said he will pay for home water filters in Flint
After Musk took a submarine to try and help rescue boys trapped in a cave in Thailand, people used social media to challenge the billionaire about doing something for Flint, MI. A 2014 switch in its water supply caused problems with lead poisoning, and residents continue to take issue with how local and state government agencies have handled the situation. Yesterday Musk responded, and said he would “fund fixing the water in any house in Flint that has water contamination above FDA levels.”
Alphabet’s Loon and Wing are now more than just ‘projects’
Google’s parent company Alphabet says that Loon will maintain its mission of working with carriers worldwide to deliver internet to underserved areas. Wing will similarly continue building out its network of delivery UAVs, not to mention its air-traffic control system for drones. The only difference is now they’re full-fledged businesses complete with their own CEOs.
Mobile-gaming titans keep ripping off indies
Voodoo is the No. 1 publisher on the App Store in terms of downloads with more than 150 million monthly active users and 300 million downloads in 2017. But in the eyes of many independent developers and their fans, Voodoo is a shady beast constantly hunting for scraps of game ideas that it can quickly transform into profit. And it’s not alone, it shares the market with companies like Gamenauts and Ketchapp.
Einride debuts a funky-looking autonomous logging truck
A human operator can control the truck remotely, even if they’re hundreds of miles away and only on mobile data.
Premium build quality, powerful hardware and solid battery life. What’s not to love about the new Razer Blade laptop? According to Devindra Hardawar, the only drawbacks left are its extra heft compared to other gaming laptops and a price that starts at $ 1,900 (our review unit carried a $ 2,600 sticker).
Magic Leap’s mixed reality headset arrives this summer
During a developer chat on Twitch, Magic Leap revealed that the Creator Edition of its One mixed reality headset should be available sometime later this summer. The wearable will use NVIDIA’s Tegra X2 system-on-a-chip, which is relatively powerful for a mobile device but still power-efficient enough that it won’t need an ungainly pack. Additionally, it revealed a “strategic, exclusive” relationship with AT&T.

The state of Michigan will no longer supply free bottled water to Flint, the city once plagued with lead-tainted drinking water in a crisis that drew national attention, officials said on Friday.
For nearly two years, tests have shown that Flint’s water is the same or better than similar cities across the state, a statement from Michigan Governor Rick Snyder’s office said. When the current supply of state-funded bottled water is depleted, the distribution centers will close and deliveries will end.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising?
This week we look at a different kind of family dynamic, wonder aloud about what portal of heaven opened up to give us a documentary of the guy who swung the baton that took out Nancy Kerrigan, we take to the streets with law enforcement and the people being enforced, take a sip or two of some hooch as we get all tore up, and meet the very worst child ever.
We need more of these.
The one thing that struck me more than anything else about this trailer is just how in-your-face it is without it ever feeling like some extended version of Cops. What is so good about how the narrative is presented is that it does not just focus in on the police of Flint but it takes a macro approach in getting more sides, more reflections, more narratives focused on this small dot in America. Call it a microcosm, I don’t care, but what’s effective in telling this particular story is just how close we get. Yes, show the body bags. Yes, show us the quiet moments when we feel people are being real. Give us an unfiltered look at a community that is dealing with things we all are seeing every day on the news. Showing the casualties of this conflict, not flinching from the realities surrounding these people, that’s where you can make a deep impact. Hopefully they go all in on this.
Fun fact: The first time I tried bourbon was 6 months ago.
The taste, for me, reminded my nose of the same astringent of Oxy pads of yore that I wiped my pimple riddled face with in high school. The taste, for the most part, didn’t have any because I was too busy recoiling from the harsh burning. I realize that’s sacrilege talk to most, if not all, connoisseurs for this stuff but I am absolutely enamored with this trailer. Director David Altrogge follows in the steps of some of the great alcohol documentaries like SOMM and The Birth of Sake that I know I’ve enjoyed thoroughly. The stories of how these things are crafted and cared for and eventually released into the wild all strike my fancy somehow and this one, too, is now on the radar.
A different kind of family.
I get that what we’re seeing in director Emanuel Hoss-Desmarais’ depiction of a family unit is completely fictitious (usually these kinds of stories are based on some insane true story) but there is some real charm here. The premise is nutty and the hijinks that ensue are no doubt blown out by a factor of 10 knowing there aren’t any reality guardrails to keep them contained. Regardless, though, I was entertained and that’s just enough for me.
Clever girl.
One of the great delights in watching efforts by those who have to be scrappy with how they make a movie is seeing how this translates to filmmakers with limited budgets wanting to make the movie they have in their heads. For the most part these are usually dramatic or comedic in nature and don’t require much beyond just some talented actors to bring a good script to life but a film requiring some special effects, a little visual dazzle? That’s going to require some effort and directors Alex Haughey and Brian Vidal certainly have nailed what appears to be a vicious tale that’s confined in a tight space but allows them the room to have fun with their narrative. As you watch this trailer you feel that independent film still can compete with the bigger boys.
I get it but I don’t get it nor want it.
Director Justin Young either came up with this idea at the same time when I, Tonya was being made in which case, what a coincidence, or came up with this idea after hearing about I, Tonya in which case, I couldn’t care either way. I think there’s a brotherly redemption story in here somewhere but I just cannot comprehend the impetus for thinking that this was a story that needed to be told. Drafting behind the success of I, Tonya does not a marketing strategy make and, just like things turned out, 2nd place will always be 1st loser.

A Flint, Michigan, public works employee has pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge in the ongoing investigation into the city’s lead-tainted water. That is the third of 15 water crisis defendants to agree to cooperate with prosecutors.
Daugherty Johnson appeared in a Flint courtroom on Tuesday, where he went into the judge’s chambers to discuss a plea agreement with prosecutors and his legal counsel, according to WJRT. The decision means the two felony charges of false pretense and conspiracy to commit false pretenses will be dropped.
A no contest plea is not an admission of guilt, but is treated as such at sentencing.
Defense attorney Edwar Zeineh told the Associated Press that the misdemeanor also will be erased in the months ahead if Johnson continues to cooperate with the Attorney General’s Office.
Johnson had been charged with conspiracy and false pretenses in helping officials obtain money to build a new water pipeline. He will be sentenced at a later date.
The problems within Flint began when city administrators switched Flint’s water supply from Detroit Water and Sewerage Department to the Flint River in a cost saving measure while under state emergency management.
Flint didn’t properly treat the water from the river in 2014 and 2015, and as a result, corrosive water caused old lead pipes to chip, contaminating the drinking water supply.
When residents began to complain about the foul smell, different taste and different look of the water, officials denied anything was wrong for 18 months.
More than a dozen people have been charged in the Flint water investigation, including state health director Nicky Lyon. Lyon was charged with two felonies, involuntary manslaughter and misconduct in office for failing to alert the public about an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in the Flint area. Nearly 100 people were affected by the outbreak and 12 died. His case is pending.
Johnson becomes the third of 15 Flint water crisis defendants to agree to cooperate in other pending cases, including against those officials inside Governor Rick Snyder’s (R) cabinet. Governor Snyder and the state of Michigan have immunity.
Flint residents are also suing some city and state employees for exposing them to lead-contaminated water and hiding the contamination. Plaintiffs argue in their 15-count lawsuit that defendants violated their property rights.

Data released on Tuesday by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services shows that 8.8 percent of children tested positive for lead city-wide in Detroit in 2016, including a lone zip code where 22 percent of all kids had a positive test result.
In terms of the rate at which children have been poisoned, Michigan’s Jackson County came in second with 7.6 percent of children having high blood lead levels in 2016, and Calhoun, and St. Joseph counties, both came in third, with a rate of 6.4 percent, The Detroit News reported.
Only 1.8 percent of children in Genesee County, home to the city of Flint, tested positive.
Director of Wayne State University’s Center for Urban Studies, Lyke Thompson, said, “The pattern is clear. We need to get these numbers down,” the Detroit News reported.
Meanwhile in the northeast, New York City is having similar problems.
In an unprecedented examination, Reuters obtained New York childhood blood testing data down to the census tract level, which represents neighborhoods with some 4,000 residents each. In the densely populated city of New York, a tract will often cover many square blocks.
Reporters identified 69 New York City census tracts in which at least 10 percent of small children who were screened over an 11 year period from 2005-2015, were found to have elevated lead levels.
This rate is twice that of Flint, Michigan at the peak of its infamous water contamination crisis in 2014 and 2015, when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that five percent of children’s test results were high, Reuters reported.
The areas at risk for lead poisoning spanned through many New York City neighborhoods and demographic groups, while reporters found hazards hiding in plain sight that could contribute to the problem.
Such problems included leaded soil and water, dangerous toys, cosmetics and health supplements.
The water contamination problems in New York City have occurred even after hard line programs to combat lead poisoning had been introduced in the city, dating all the way back to the 1960s, according to Reuters.
And before the new data was released regarding lead issues in Detroit, In 2014, Flint, Michigan experienced a major water contamination crisis.

At that time, the city of Flint had switched water sources to reduce spending, and a new pipeline connecting Flint with Michigan’s Lake Huron, was under construction. At this point, the city turned to the Flint River as a source of water during a two year transition to the new pipeline.
But the Flint River water supply had not been properly treated for years, and had been severely degraded during the 1970s, due to the “the presence of fecal coliform bacteria, low dissolved oxygen, plant nutrients, oils, and toxic substances,” according to the State of Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
In 2001, the state ordered monitoring and cleanup of 134 polluted sites in the Flint River watershed, but a subsequent class action lawsuit revealed the Michigan State Department of Environmental Quality was not treating the polluted river with an anti-corrosive agent, in violation of federal law.
Since the water had not been treated properly, lead from aging service lines began leaching into Flint’s water supply, leading to the highly-publicized crisis.

The Flint water crisis has caused fetal deaths to jump 58 percent, while birth rates in the area have dropped 12 percent, a new study suggests.
The study by assistant economics professors David Slusky at Kansas University and Daniel Grossman at West Virginia University examined local and state health records, comparing Flint to the rest of Michigan between 2008 and 2015.
FLINT WATER CRISIS
April 2014 was when the city of Flint switched its water supply from the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) to Flint River in a money-saving effort.
Officials failed to treat the water, causing dangerous levels of bacteria and the pipes to corrode, many of which are made from lead. Cases of Legionnaire’s Disease also increased in the area at this time, with 12 people dying as a result.
Lead exposure can cause brain damage in children, who are at risk of developmental delays, lower IQ and behavioural issues. It can damage a fetus’s development and can cause miscarriages and stillbirths. Fertility can also be affected.
BIRTH RATES
The study examined birth rates and found, “Flint’s numbers fell off a cliff, and the rest of the cities stayed pretty much constant,” Slusky told the Detroit Free Press.
The study looked at women of childbearing age and the number of births to calculate each city’s birth rates.
Researchers also looked at Google search data to see if the drop was due to Flint residents’ fear of conceiving because of the risks the water posed, but found no increase in searches on lead and lead poisoning until September 2015, when officials finally admitted there was an issue.
“During most of our time period, when the city and state officials were saying there was no problem, we didn’t see any evidence of knowledge about lead in the water,” Slusky said.
Officials had denied there was a problem once people began to complain, and the admission only came after a local pediatrician’s research revealed rising lead levels in Flint children.
The water supply was changed in October 2015, months after the Environmental Protection Agency and Virginia Tech researchers altered them to the problem.
“We find no evidence of avoidance behavior,” Slusky said. “Either Flint residents were unable to conceive children, or women were having more miscarriages during this time.”
FETAL DEATHS
The study found fetal deaths increased by 58 percent in Flint since April 2014. The available state statistics only cover deaths after 20 weeks and which take place in hospitals, so the available data is limited.
“This represents a couple hundred fewer children born that otherwise would have been,” Slusky told Kansas University Today.
Babies born since the switch was made were close to 150 grams lighter, and gained less weight. They were also born half a week earlier.
The study found a slightly higher ratio of female births after the crisis. Male fetuses are more fragile, according to other studies.
The statistics are similar to those found in a study by Marc Edwards of Virginia Tech on fetal deaths and birth rates in Washington D.C after residents were exposed to lead in drinking water from 2000-2004.
The study, published as part of the Kansas University Economics Department Working Papers Series in Theoretical and Applied Economics, is not yet peer reviewed.

The Environmental Protection Agency announced Tuesday that it would forgive just over $ 20 million it is owed by the city of Flint, Michigan, for fighting the lead drinking water crisis that became a national issue during last year’s presidential campaign.
“Forgiving Flint’s past debt will better protect public health and reduce the costs associated with maintaining the city’s water system over time,” said EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt.
The action would also support President Trump’s infrastructure agenda, he said.
“Rebuilding our nation’s infrastructure is one of the President’s top priorities, and EPA is especially focused on those communities, like Flint, that need it the most,” Pruitt said in a statement. “Forgiving the city’s debt will ensure that Flint will not need to resume payments on the loan, allowing progress toward updating Flint’s water system to continue.”
Tuesday’s step falls in line with the passage of the May 2017 Consolidated Appropriation’s Act that was signed by President Trump and will help Flint, Michigan, and EPA “continue working together to protect public health and improve the city’s water system,” said EPA.
The money was given to Michigan to help Flint upgrade its drinking water infrastructure, and was delivered as part of the federal Drinking Water State Revolving Fund program. The EPA program is a federal-state partnership by which the state provides 20 percent of the total amount in funding required for a project. In 2016, the program provided over $ 32.5 billion to states, according to the agency’s website.
The EPA said Tuesday that recent test results showed that lead levels in Flint’s water are “well below” the minimum safe drinking level.
“We appreciate the continued partnership and support from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency,” said Governor Rick Snyder. “The loan forgiveness being extended to Flint will allow for state funding to be spent on high priority infrastructure needs that maintain recent water quality improvements and address public health concerns.”
