I'm your host, Jordan Parker Erb. And you, reader, are in for lots of tech news.

But first, with Climate Week underway here in New York City, I wanted to highlight a major project from Insider: Our inaugural Climate Action 30, a list of global leaders working toward climate solutions.

From social media influencers to startup execs, each honoree on the list shares the progress they're making to achieve their climate goals. It's a great mix of leaders — and well worth a read. Check it out here.

Now, let's get started.

Elon Musk.
Elon Musk.

1. Twitter is facing an exodus of hundreds of workers. Two months after Elon Musk declared his intent to acquire Twitter in a $ 44 billion deal, the billionaire spoke directly with employees at the company. During that meeting, Musk pitched his vision for the business. Since then, hundreds of staff have fled the social media giant.

  • Musk's meeting with Twitter employees covered everything from aliens to layoffs, but did little to reassure workers, according to people with knowledge of the matter. Employees had already expressed frustration with the deal reached in April, and sources say around 100 workers left the company in the weeks that followed.
  • The trend of increased attrition only exacerbated as Musk and Twitter embarked on an ongoing legal battle. According to the Twitter workers, who asked not to be identified, the business saw a net loss of more than 700 full-time staff as of September.
  • But the legal saga isn't over yet. Twitter is about to get its first chance to question Elon Musk under oath regarding his decision to back out of the deal.

Why staff are leaving Twitter.

An iPhone displaying the Audiobooks menu in the Spotify app, with a cartoon woman listening to music nearby.
The Spotify app is getting a new “Audiobooks” section.

2. Spotify is now offering audiobooks. As the company works to become a one-stop-shop for audio entertainment, Spotify has announced that it's launching a new audiobook feature, with over 300,000 titles already added. Here's everything you want to know.

3. Pittsburgh tech workers on why they chose the lesser-known tech hub. Amid a market downturn, some tech workers in Pittsburgh told Insider they're happy to live in a low-cost area — and the sense of community there means they're not even tempted to move back to the major tech hubs. They describe life outside of Silicon Valley.

4. Starlink will request exemptions from Iran sanctions to provide internet services. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said in a tweet that the company would "ask for an exemption to Iranian sanctions." His tweet comes on the heels of anti-government protests after a woman died in police custody. What we know so far.

5. A former VMware employee explains how they knew they had to leave. This former worker quit their dream job at VMware just 10 days after Broadcom announced its $ 61 billion plan to acquire the company. From uncertainty to sleepless nights, they explain why they left and what it taught them.

Ukrainian artillery unit fires with a 2S7-Pion, a self-propelled gun, at a position near a frontline in Kharkiv region on August 26, 2022, amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

  • Ukraine has pushed a massive counteroffensive in the country's northeast and southern regions.
  • The advancement has forced Russian soldiers to flee their positions, some even in civilian clothes.
  • Some Ukrainian troops say they've been overwhelmed by how much ammo and weaponry was left behind.

Ukrainian forces are staging a lightning-fast counteroffensive in the northeast near Kharkiv, and Russian troops are rapidly fleeing from their positions as the Ukrainian military liberates previously occupied territory.

The speed of the offensive — which gained momentum last week and saw significant breakthroughs over the weekend — and how quickly Russian lines crumbled have surprised both sides in this bloody conflict.

Russian troops who recently fled from the front lines left behind so much weaponry and ammunition that Ukraine has struggled to handle it all, an unidentified Ukrainian soldier from an intelligence unit told The Telegraph recently.

"They left a huge amount of vehicles and ammunition. We couldn't transfer or evacuate it all to our rear," a Ukrainian commander, whose call sign is Birdie, told the paper.

Ukraine's defense ministry posted a tweet on Sunday with a video that purported to show a litany of abandoned Russian military vehicles. In the video, the caption read: "Everyone gets a tank. F..ck there is enough tanks for everyone. What a bonus."

"Russia is trying to maintain its status as the largest supplier of military equipment for the Ukrainian army, and even to improve its status, knowing that lend-lease will soon come into effect. #UAarmy loves its trophy ammo," the tweet read.

Over the last two weeks, Ukrainian forces have launched counteroffensives in the country's northeast and southern regions in an attempt to reclaim territory occupied by Russian forces for much of the war.

British intelligence said on Monday that Ukrainian advances have forced Russia to withdraw troops from large chunks of the northeast Kharkiv region, where Ukraine's second-largest city is located, and Russian troops have been forced to take "emergency defensive actions."

In fleeing their positions, Russian troops have reportedly put on civilian clothes to escape capture as they run from the front lines and even stolen bicycles and vehicles from locals so they can evade Ukrainian drones.

Ukraine's General Staff of the Armed Forces said in a Monday update that its troops continue to liberate settlements in the Kharkiv and Donetsk regions, forcing Russians to "quickly abandon their positions and flee." It added that "the occupiers have taken away property and vehicles looted from local residents."

During a speech on Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that since the start of September his military has liberated around 1,250 square miles of territory formerly occupied by Russian troops.

"These days, the Russian army is showing its best — showing its back," he said. "And, in the end, it is a good choice for them to run away. There is and will be no place for the occupiers in Ukraine."

Benidorm EXODUS: Britons are FLEEING Benidorm as hotels see drastic FALL in holidays https://briefnews.eu/benidorm-exodus-britons-are-fleeing-benidorm-as-hotels-see-drastic-fall-in-holidays/ https://briefnews.eu/benidorm-exodus-britons-are-fleeing-benidorm-as-hotels-see-drastic-fall-in-holidays/#respond Fri, 04 Jan 2019 12:09:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/benidorm-exodus-britons-are-fleeing-benidorm-as-hotels-see-drastic-fall-in-holidays/

Figures released by local hotel association Hosbec show the number of overnight stays in the famous Costa Blanca holiday resort by Brit tourists last year plummeted by 454,000.

The drop represented an eight per cent fall, although the five million overnight stays registered by UK visitors still made Britain Benidorm’s number one foreign tourist market.

In December 41.7 per cent of the foreign holidaymakers who stayed in Benidorm were Brits according to the Hosbec figures, compared with just three per cent from second-placed Belgium and 2.2 per cent from third-placed Holland.

Spanish holidaymakers accounted for just over half the tourists who made overnight stays in the resort.

Hotel bosses say the resurgence of the domestic market – with the number of overnight stays by Spaniards last year jumping by 494,000 to 5.3 million – has countered the problem the British slump could have caused.

The Spanish rise – helped by a 17 per cent increase in the number of Portuguese tourists – has meant Benidorm hoteliers have been able to grade last year as one of the best-ever and on par with its historic 2016 when the number of overnight stays came close to reaching the 12 million mark.

The Brit fall has been blamed on competition from countries including Turkey and Egypt, the reduction of air capacity and the choice of apartments as accommodation.

Hosbec President Antonio Mayor said: “Despite a push by rival destinations like Turkey and Egypt, we are very satisfied at the results obtained in Benidorm.

“Few holiday destinations can present such solvency. Any businessman in the travel industry would be happy with guaranteed results like this for the next ten years.”

Brits began to flock to Benidorm in the sixties as package holidays became a trend.

The resort slowly became a home-for-home for package tourists from the UK with British pubs and fish and chip restaurants.

In September grandmother-of-six Freda Jackson, 81, from Blackburn, claimed her Benidorm holiday was ruined because her hotel had “too many Spaniards.”

Last week it emerged another Brit holiday favourite – the Costa del Sol resort of Torremolinos – had enjoyed its best tourism figures for 10 years with almost one million visitors recorded.

  • Companies that ran advertisements during Tucker Carlson’s timeslot on Fox News have begun fleeing in droves, following the controversial comments he made about immigrants seeking shelter in the US.
  • People were outraged and threatened boycotts after Carlson expressed concern with the US’s immigration policy.

Companies that ran advertisements during Tucker Carlson’s timeslot on Fox News have begun fleeing in droves, following the controversial comments he made about immigrants seeking shelter in the US.

On Thursday, the “Tucker Carlson Tonight” host expressed concern with the current state of US immigration and attempted to distinguish immigrants based on their educational background. Carlson, who urged for more immigrants who were “scientists and engineers,” suggested allowing in immigrants hailing from impoverished regions of the world would make the US “poorer and dirtier.”

“Instead we’re getting waves of people with high school educations or less. Nice people, no one doubts that, but as an economic matter this is insane. It’s indefensible, so no one even tries to defend it,” Carlson said.

“Instead our leaders demand that you shut up and accept this. We have a moral obligation to admit the world’s poor, they tell us, even if it makes our country poorer and dirtier and more divided.”

After Carlson’s comments were widely rebuked and whispers of boycotts began circulating, companies who advertised on his show began cutting ties.

fox news

On Monday, Carlson reiterated his prior claims and likened the affect of the US’s immigration policy to that of Mexico’s: “The left says we have a moral obligation to admit the world’s poor,” Carlson said. “Even if it makes our own country more like Tijuana is now, which is to say poorer and dirtier and more divided.”

Fox News Channel supported its host’s opinions, and said it was a “shame that left-wing advocacy groups, under the guise of being supposed ‘media watchdogs’ weaponize social media against companies in an effort to stifle free speech.”

The company also described the developments as “unfortunate and unnecessary distractions,” and specifically targeted progressive media watchdogs with “deeply political motives.”

“While we do not advocate boycotts, these same groups never target other broadcasters and operate under a grossly hypocritical double standard given their intolerance to all opposing points of view,” Fox News said.

  • Tear gas by its nature is difficult to target, and can easily affect people it was not specifically aimed at.
  • Customs and Border Protection said the move “prevented a dangerous situation from getting worse” and that no one was hurt in the incident.

Cruise ship crashes into FOUR yachts in harbour sending boat owners fleeing in pyjamas https://briefnews.eu/cruise-ship-crashes-into-four-yachts-in-harbour-sending-boat-owners-fleeing-in-pyjamas/ https://briefnews.eu/cruise-ship-crashes-into-four-yachts-in-harbour-sending-boat-owners-fleeing-in-pyjamas/#respond Fri, 31 Aug 2018 07:24:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cruise-ship-crashes-into-four-yachts-in-harbour-sending-boat-owners-fleeing-in-pyjamas/

A cruise ship smashed into four luxury yachts in Devon yesterday, alarming photographs have revealed.

Dramatic images captured the moment the huge 539ft Saga Pearl II collided with smaller vessels which were moored in the bay as it came in Dartmouth Harbour.

Boat owners “ran from their vessels in pyjamas,” as they tried to escape the oncoming liner, eyewitnesses have said.

Fortunately, no one was hurt in the incident, but all four yachts were superficially damaged.

Dart Harbour Authority said it is now trying to track down the owners of all the boats involved in the incident on Wednesday morning and has launched an investigation.

“During a manoeuvre to turn, the ship clipped four yachts causing superficial damage,” Dart Harbour’s Chair Mark Hubbard said in a statement posted to Twitter yesterday morning.

“No one was hurt in the incident and the harbour office is now making all efforts to contact the owners of the yacht involved.

“Records from the incident are being collated and will be analysed in order to identify exactly why this occurred and what can be learnt.”

Steve McMillan, 54, of Brixham, Devon, who witnessed the incident, said: “The Saga Pearl II collided with four yachts on the way in to Dartmouth.

“She turned in too wide and people were running out of their boats, in their pyjamas on a nearby pontoon adjacent to the yacht club. It really was close.”

The Saga Pearl II is currently on its final season hosting cruises for Saga touring Western Europe including England, France and Spain.

It has capacity for a maximum of 449 passengers and 220 crew members.

A spokesman for Saga said: “The Saga Pearl 2 arrived in Dartmouth this morning under pilotage by the harbourmaster.

“During a manoeuvre she came into contact with four small leisure craft causing superficial damage.

“Nobody was hurt in the incident and the harbour office are making every effort to contact the owners of the yachts involved.

“Damage to the yachts will be thoroughly assessed and any damage caused by Saga Pearl 2 will be rectified.”

Earlier this week a viral video emerged of the terrifying moment passengers on a cruise ship experienced a dangerous storm, with the waves completely covering the window of their cabin during the night.

In the video, the waves crashed against the glass cabin doors, completely concealing the view.

The video caption explains that it was the 6th level of a ship that had seven levels, meaning the waves almost completely covered the ship.

Thankfully the water didn’t breach the doors and no water seemed to leak in or damage the interior of the cabin.

Viewers have been shocked by the waves. One user commented: “Are you in a submarine?” in reference to the complete submerging of the windows.

Another remarked: “You know there’s got to be some drunk idiot on that ship with the balcony doors open. ”
