Aquaman isn’t just ruling the waves, he is the current king of the worldwide box office. The latest DC movie has passed $ 640million and some are predicting it could be the first Warner Bros DC Extended Universe release to pass one billion. No wonder confident talk is already focussed on the inevitable sequel. The single end credit scene clearly sets up a major storyline for the future. Eagle-eyed fans spotted a clever Justice League Ester Egg which director James Wan has already acknowledged.

Leading man Jason Momoa has said he is keen for a Justice League crossover and vocally denounced reports that Henry Cavill is stepping down as Superman.

However, when asked who he would like Aquaman to team up with next, he picked two other members of the Justice League – Wonder Woman and Flash.

Now a new screengrab from the movie has spotted a cheeky reference to the Aquaman Wonder Woman Flashpoint storyline.

Is this really on the cards? Mera will not be happy.

The cheeky newspaper clipping is seen on the wall in Doctor Shin’s makeshift lab.

Arthur Curry and Diana Prince have a relationship in the alternate Flashpoint universe. Furthermore, the only official reports about the solo Flash movie, including comments by Ezra Miller, have spoken of the Flashpoint storyline.

Is this clipping just a cheeky fan Easter Egg from director James Wan, or a sneaky clue about what could be coming next?

Momoa has also revealed he already pitched the opening scene of Aquaman 2 to Warner Bros executives.

The end credit scene appears to be setting up the return of Black Manta, aided by Shin, as the main antagonist, but much could change in the next few years.

The exact shape of the future DCEU is unclear, with persistent reports that Cavill and Ben Affleck’s Batman will exit.

The Flash movie remain far off, with no preproduction dates in place. Following Wonder Woman 2 and Shazam! next year, anything is possible.

However, an Aquaman Wonder Woman romance remains unlikely and this Easter Egg seems certain to be simply an in-joke piece of fun.

Zorro may have finally met his match.

Jonás Cuarón’s Zorro reboot cast has added Flashpoint and Dope actress Kiersey Clemons. Clemons will play the female lead in Z, the near-future reimagining of the classic swashbuckler.

Variety reports that the Zorro reboot has cast Clemons to trade barbs with Gael Garcia Bernal (Mozart in the Jungle), who will play the famous masked hero.

Z producer Mark Amin praised Clemons’ casting to ScreenDaily, who first reported the news, saying:

“Kiersey is an extraordinary young talent and we are delighted to have her join a growing list of unique actors who will inhabit the imaginative world of Jonás Z.”

Z will be written and directed by Cuarón and financed by Lantica Media, with Anne-Marie Ross of Pantelion International shopping the pic in Berlin and UTA Independent Film Group representing domestic rights. The project was first announced in 2016 with Bernal attached as the lead, but progress has been slow for the reboot.

However, Z is intended to start filming as soon as this June, according to reports from ScreenDaily. But the project has been met with numerous delays — it previously planned to start shooting in the Dominican Republic in both the summer and the fall of 2016, but those plans fell through.

Z will be a huge departure from past adaptations of the pulp hero, who was first created by writer Johnston McCulley in 1919. A dashing masked vigilante, Zorro is the alter ego of nobleman Don Diego de la Vega who fights corruption and defends the poor and indigenous people of California. He’s received multiple silver screen adaptations, with Douglas Fairbanks, Guy Williams, and Antonio Banderas all donning the mask and sabre. But all those feature film adaptations have remained loyal to the pulp tales where the witty hero was born. Z looks to transport Zorro to the near-future, possibly to fight in a more science-fiction-inspired setting.

At 24, Clemons is notably much younger than Bernal (39 years old), but her youth may be an indicator of the approach Cuarón is taking with Z. Fresh-faced twenty-somethings have often been the poster children for YA sci-fi franchises, and the few plot details we know about Z suggest that the film is going in that direction.

No release date has yet been announced for Z.

Call it Justice League 1.5: Flashpoint will now boast more than half of the members of the Justice League, with Batman joining Wonder Woman and Cyborg in a feature appearance in the reworked solo Flash film.

With the Dark Knight’s inclusion in the adaptation of the massive crossover event that rebooted the DC Comics, it adds to chatter that Flashpoint could usher in a new era for the DC Extended Universe. That is, if Warner Bros. is still planning to move ahead with its potential universe-rebooting film after Justice League‘s disappointing opening weekend.

Fans were taken aback during Warner Bros.’ San Diego Comic-Con panel earlier this summer when it was announced that The Flash solo movie would be retooled as Flashpoint, the story arc that — along with Crisis on Infinite Earths — is one of the most famous crossover arcs to leave lasting ripple effects throughout the DC Comics universe.

In the story, Barry Allen wakes up in an alternate universe to find his powers missing and the world at war. Aquaman and Wonder Woman are waging a deadly battle across continents, Batman is now Thomas Wayne, and Superman is a captive of the U.S. government. However, just because it shares a title doesn’t mean it shares a story — Warner Bros.’ current DC universe is still in its beginning stages, with the Justice League uniting only this year and two characters releasing solo films thus far. Warner Bros.’ Flashpoint could feasibly be more isolated with fewer far-reaching implications, but with two thirds of the DC Comics Trinity joining, the film adaptation could be closer than we thought.

DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns, and co-head of the DC Films alongside Jon Berg, spoke with Entertainment Weekly on the studio’s plans for Flashpoint, which will be headlined by Ezra Miller:

“There’s elements in it that we’re going to be playing into that we couldn’t do anywhere else. The scale of it, the Batman story of it all.”

Thomas Wayne’s Batman plays a major part in the Flashpoint arc, allying with Barry Allen early on in the arc after Barry reveals his identity and pleads with the grizzled vigilante to help him regain his powers. In Flashpoint, it is Bruce Wayne who dies at the hands of an armed mugger and it makes a huge impact on his parents: Martha is driven mad with grief and turns into the Flashpoint version of the Joker, while Thomas takes on the Batman mantle, albeit with a more murderous bent. In Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, director Zack Snyder seems to plant seeds for a more vigorous Thomas Wayne, as played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. You can see Snyder’s Thomas lunging forward before he is shot.

However, the disappointing box office numbers of Justice League on its opening weekend may put the fate of Flashpoint in jeopardy. We learned last month that Warner Bros. executives are carefully watching Justice League‘s critical and box office performance to determine whether to move ahead with Flashpoint. The reviews already looked concerning, but with Justice League falling short of its $ 110 million estimates with its $ 94 million opening weekend, it’s possible that Warner Bros. could be rethinking its Flashpoint strategy.

Another factor to take into consideration: Henry Cavill reportedly has one DC Extended Universe movie left in his contract with Warner Bros., which makes me wonder if his Superman will complete the Trinity in Flashpoint. Storywise it’s unlikely: the Superman we meet in Flashpoint is a decrepit, pitiful version of the Man of Steel, and unless Warner Bros. plans to Benjamin Button Henry Cavill down to size, it’s unlikely that appearance would count to his contract. It’s more likely he’ll appear in Man of Steel 2 — the fate of which is also up in the air post-Justice League.

For now, Flashpoint still takes up a spot on Warner Bros.’ sparse DCEU slate, with Ezra Miller set to star as Barry Allen, as well as Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Billy Crudup as Barry’s father Henry Allen, and Ray Fisher as Cyborg. It will arrive sometime in 2020. Maybe.

Ezra Miller is bringing the Flash to the DCEU in Justice League, and the actor is already looking toward the future for his character, specifically the in-development Flashpoint film. When pressed for casting recommendations, Miller confirmed he’d be more than happy to have The Walking Dead‘s Jeffrey Dean Morgan join the Flashpoint cast as Batman. Or rather, an alternate universe Batman.

In the comic storyline Flashpoint, Barry Allen, aka the Flash, wakes up in an alternate dimension. In this dimension, he no longer has his powers of super-speed, the Justice League never formed, and Superman seemingly never existed. While this dimension does have Batman, it’s a completely different Batman than the one Barry knows. Instead of Bruce Wayne donning the Dark Knight mantle, it’s Bruce’s father, Thomas. Unlike the timeline we’re all used to, Flashpoint changes things so that it was actually young Bruce Wayne was gunned down years ago. The crime resulted in Bruce’s father Thomas becoming Batman, while Bruce’s mother Martha became The Joker.

It was confirmed at Comic-Con 2017 that the solo Flash film would be officially titled Flashpoint, which suggests the film will possibly be adapting elements of the comic crossover into the film. If so, that would mean the film would need a new Batman for its alternate dimension. And since this alternate Batman is Bruce Wayne’s father, who better than the actor who already played Bruce Wayne’s father in the DCEU? In Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, we’re provided with a brief prologue showing Bruce Wayne’s parents being murdered. There, his father was played by The Walking Dead and Watchman‘s Jeffrey Dean Morgan, while Martha Wayne was played by Morgan’s Walking Dead co-star Lauren Cohan.

During an interview with ComicBook.com, Justice League co-star Ezra Miller was asked about Flashpoint, and the actor spoke specifically about the Thomas Wayne elements of the story, saying, “I think that the emotional arc of the Thomas Wayne stuff in Flashpoint is one of the illest [parts]. And to see that different manifestation of Batman and his whole different style.” Miller then added:

“And I love the reality that you have this universe that is so inverted from the one that we know. And this one factor remains the same, but in this flipped way. Batman is steady, but it’s going to be the result of a different side of the same tragedy with Thomas Wayne instead of Bruce, and that’s dope.”

When the interviewer inquired about adding Jeffrey Dean Morgan to the cast to reprise his role as Thomas Wayne, and thus become the new Batman, Miller was very much into the idea:

“Oh, hell yeah. I think he’s amazing…And I think he would fall right into what is becoming a very, very serious ensemble of actors. I’m so excited about Kiersey Clemons. I’m so excited about Billy Crudup. I just couldn’t be more stoked about the names involved so far.”

Kiersey Clemons plays the Flash’s girlfriend Iris West, while Billy Crudup plays the Flash’s father. If Morgan does indeed end up being the new Batman in Flashpoint, one can’t help but wonder: does that mean Lauren Cohan will be the new Joker? She’d certainly be a lot better in the role than Jared Leto, that’s for sure.

Flashpoint is expected to hit theaters in 2020.

During the Warner Bros. Pictures panel at San Diego Comic-Con, a surprising reveal came when referencing the first solo feature film for The Flash in the DC Extended Universe. The title of the movie, scheduled for release in 2020, was named as Flashpoint in a flash series of moving title cards that unfurled before the DC Comics part of the Warner Bros. panel began.

The reveal of Flashpoint as a title in development was a huge deal, mostly because that story arc has a massive impact on the DC Comics universe. The storyline imagines a DC Comics universe where Barry Allen (who will be played by Ezra Miller) didn’t get his speedster powers and never became The Flash, which also ends up effecting the rest of the members of Justice League, and if a new rumor is to be believed, we’ll get to see how that impacts at least one of those superheroes in the Flashpoint movie.

Buried in a Forbes article discussing the box office success of Wonder Woman and looking at the future of the DC Extended Universe, there’s the mention of Gal Gadot reprising her role as Diana of Themyscira in Flashpoint. Furthermore, they go on to say that it’s not just The Flash’s solo movie, but “another superhero team-up featuring several additional DC superheroes.” If that’s true, this could be a big deal for the DC Extended Universe.

How Big Will Flashpoint Be?

Any DC Comics fan will tell you that Flashpoint has a drastic impact on the characters and historic moments in the entire universe. There’s no Justice League, Superman is being held in government captivity, Thomas Wayne has become a different, more violent version of Batman after his wife and son are killed, and there’s a massive war between Atlantis and the Amazons, pitting Aquaman and Wonder Woman against each other. All of this is caused by Barry Allen preventing the murder of his mother in the past, and thus creating this alternate universe.

If the Flashpoint movie follows this same storyline, this has the potential to be a blockbuster event akin to Captain America: civil War or maybe more accurately, X-Men: Days of Future Past. Perhaps as Barry Allen explores his powers, he realizes his time traveling ability and ends up selfishly trying to change the trajectory of his family’s life, unknowingly changing the entire DC Extended Universe. Then he’s forced to fix his transgressions through time in order to get the universe back to normal, not unlike Back to the Future Part II.

Many fans have speculated that using the Flashpoint storyline would allow Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Entertainment to replace Ben Affleck as Batman within the narrative structure of the DC Extended Universe without shaking things up too much. Considering that when The Flash fixes the events of Flashpoint in the comics it spawned The New 52 series of stories, that’s a fair assumption. But it would also mean that The Flash movie would probably be the biggest cinematic event in the DC Extended Universe yet.

Justice League - The Flash

Flashpoint May Be Less Complex But No Less Important

Though the Flashpoint storyline is a big one for DC Comics, that doesn’t necessarily have to be the case for the big screen. After all, we’ve seen how large comic book arc’s like Marvel’s Civil War have been changed and isolated to single film narratives. So while Flashpoint may have a big impact on the DC Comics universe, the way the story plays out on the big screen might be much more isolated and focused on The Flash.

Remember when we compared the Flashpoint storyline to Back to the Future Part II because Barry Allen did something in the past that drastically changed the future? Let’s not forget that Warner Bros. has been courting Robert Zemeckis to direct. So what if instead of being this grand, blockbuster that has the entire DC Comics universe upended, what if the story is more centralized Barry Allen and how his life is effected because his decision to change the past has resulted in him having no relationship with any of the superheroes of Justice League.

As we’ve seen in the Justice League trailers, Barry Allen is kind of a lonely kid. He even mentions that he doesn’t really have many friends so he’s immediately on board for Bruce Wayne’s proposal for him to join a superhero team. So if what Barry Allen changes in the past causes him to never get the attention of Justice League, changing the face of superheroes in the DC Extended Universe, that’s something he would want to fix.

ScreenRant has an interesting idea of how this might play out with Diana taking a key role as a counterpart to Barry Allen, guiding him through the darker, alternate universe where the Justice League never came together. They point out that Barry Allen’s powers were a big part of what convinced both Wonder Woman and Batman that there was something bigger at play. Without seeing footage that was found on Lex Luthor’s computer, she may never have decided to help Batman and Superman fight Doomsday. And if that doesn’t happen, then Justice League as we’ll see it come together this fall would never be formed.

Before we knew The Flash movie was called Flashpoint, it was said to be a time traveling buddy movie involving The Flash and Cyborg. But now that Wonder Woman has proven to be the most successful superhero in the DC Comics line-up, she might prove to be a better counterpart than Cyborg. After all, the latter’s solo movie that was once scheduled for release in the next few years was nowhere to be seen in the line-up of titles at San Diego Comic-Con, so maybe Cyborg isn’t quite the pillar character that Warner Bros. hope he’d be.

This is all speculation for now, but the fact that other DC Comics superheroes will appear in Flashpoint indicate that we’ll see the iconic comic storyline play out in some capacity. Whether it’s on an epic scale involving the entire universe or on a more isolated scale like Back to the Future, we’ll have to wait and see.

For now, all we know about The Flash movie is that it will be called Flashpoint, it will star Ezra Miller as Barry Allen, as well as Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Billy Crudup as Barry’s father Henry Allen and Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and it will arrive sometime in 2020. Stay tuned for more.
