The Flash‘s midseason return will introduce a new baddie played by a Vampire Diaries alum while also introducing the concept of a solution to all metahuman problems. As detailed in The CW’s synopsis for its No. 1 drama’s first episode after the holiday break, “The Flash & The Furious” (airing Tuesday, Jan. 15) finds Caitlin and Cisco embarking on a new journey as they discuss the notion of creating a metahuman cure. Of course, as maaaaaaany a metahuman/mutant storyline has shown us over the eons, seeking “cures” for powers can fast turn into ethically thorny and highly debatable issues. Elsewhere in the episode, while Nora grapples with the revelation that Eobard Thawne, her apparent ally of sorts, killed the grandmother after whom she was named, Team Flash must stop the formidable team-up of Silver Ghost (Vampire Diaries and East Los High alum Gabrielle Walsh), a new meta-tech villain who can control engines and motorized technology, and a newly sprung-from-jail Weather Witch aka Joss Marden (returning guest star Reina Hardesty). Once again, The Flash resumes Season 5 on Tuesday, Jan. 15, where it will now lead into the freshman drama Roswell, New Mexico (thus bumping Black Lightning to Mondays, thus bumping Legends of Tomorrow to a months-long long hiatus). Want more scoop on The Flash, or for any other show? Email InsideLine@tvline.com and your question may be answered via Matt’s Inside Line. The Flash will soon be celebrating its 100th episode, and apparently everyone is invited to the party. Thus far, anything remotely resembling a detail about this season’s eighth episode — which will precede the three-night, Legends-less “Elseworlds” crossover week and also serve as The Flash‘s midseason finale — has been scarce. “All I can you tell is… it’s a little bit different,” showrunner Todd Helbing said at this summer’s San Diego Comic-Con, while cast member Candice Patton very recently shared with TVLine, “For fans, it’s special in the sense that it kind of really revisits what makes our show special. There’s a lot of good stuff.” And by stuff, it seems she perhaps meant sinister speedsters, because DC World reports that Tony Todd, who voiced Zoom during Season 2, confirmed at the MCM London Comic Con that has recorded new dialogue for the milestone episode. Todd also hinted that Zoom is but one of several fleet-footed foes to appear in the episode, and they’re all “wanting a piece of Barry.” Now, lest anyone think that Episode 100, directed by cast member Tom Cavanagh, is some out-of-time or dream/nightmare episode, new addition Chris Klein told TVLine on Friday that The Flash‘s current headache, Cicada, is also in the mix. “It’s a really exciting one, a really fun, fun episode,” Cicada’s portrayer effused. “They definitely built in some bells and whistles for it!” Want more scoop on The Flash, or for any other show? “First OFFICIAL look at Barry’s new threads for season 5,” the Flash star said in a Friday evening Instagram post, sharing the full image seen below. I’m no fashionista, but the new outfits seems to have a modified cowl (with no chin strap); softer, Spider-Man-like fabric (can we say Spider-Man here?); a smaller chest emblem and a semi-translucent neck.
Earlier this week, Gustin vented about a photo that had been leaked from a behind-the-scenes fitting and drew criticism for this, that and the other nerdy thing (but also for the actor’s build). “Here’s the thing about this bulls–t photo leak — it’s a cool suit,” Gustin wrote Wednesday on Instagram. “It’s a terrible photo that I was unaware was being taken, much less being posted. Some things need work and they will be worked on. We’ll get there.”
The Flash opens Season 5 on Oct. 9, again airing Tuesdays at 8/7c (leading into Black Lightning). Jessica Parker Kennedy (as Nora), Danielle Nicolet (Cecile) and Hartley Sawyer (Ralph) have all been promoted to series regulars for the coming run, while Chris Klein (American Pie) will portray The Flash’s foe, Cicada.

As The CW’s The Flash resumes Season 4 this Tuesday at 8/7c, Barry’s latest Big Bad has adopted yet another form, that of “unlucky” bus meta Becky Sharpe. But in the course of doing so, Clifford DeVoe got a bit kill-y, needlessly offing the Iron Heights warden. That raised the hackles of his wife and partner Marlize, to the point that DeVoe is now dosing his better half with Weeper tears.
The Flash‘s Barry and Iris find their honeymoon cut short — and neither of ’em are too happy about it! — in this exclusive deleted scene from tonight’s fall finale (airing at 8/7c on The CW).

This week on The Flash, one team member went to great lengths to save another — with major ramifications for all involved.
Toward the close of an hour in which Barry & Co. debated letting the Earth-19 villain-from-the-future Abra Kadabra (played by MacGyver‘s David Dastmalchian) run free, in trade for intel on Savitar’s identity, Caitlin was critically injured/Tommy Merlyn’d by an explosion conjured by the magic man.
A supine Caitlin guided Julian through surgery on herself, but when she later suffered a setback, Julian removed the pendant that keeps her metahuman powers at bay, in hope that they could save her.
“Caitlin is on her last legs on the operation table when she suddenly flatlines, so we try and resuscitate her,” Tom Felton recounts. “We give her compressions. We even give her the old electric shock trying to start the heart, and none of it works. We actually accept that she’s dead, but in the very, very final moment, Julian grabs the necklace off of her and immediately she comes back to life, because her Killer Frost genes are very strong.”
Julian’s life-saving decision is not met with cheers but jeers, given the chilling beast it has thus unleashed. “Cisco in that moment straight away says, ‘How dare you do that? She didn’t want [powers],’” Felton says. “I think the rest of the team would’ve rather stuck to Caitlin’s wishes and allowed her to die.”
Instead, as glimpsed in the final seconds, as a full-tilt Killer Frost blows away her buds with a cold blast, kindly Caitlin has perhaps been overcome by her alter ego for good (meaning, for very, very bad). And it’s quite possible that none of the “pep talks” that brought her back will work this time. “She’s full-blown nutter, so we have to rely on some pretty severe methods to try and stop her,” Felton previews of the weeks to come.
In pulling out all the stops to save Caitlin, Julian of course
was coming from a place of deep affection, having had grown close to the S.T.A.R. Labs scientist until her actions led him to believe she had another reason for inviting him aboard Team Flash. “For a long time, Julian thought that he’d been brought into the group or his skills and for his assets, and then he realized that maybe she’s had her own prerogative the whole time,” Felton recalls. “So, yeah, he was definitely feeling a bit conflicted with his feelings, whether he really belongs in the group and whether he’s able to believe Caitlin.”
This week, though, Caitlin apologized for failing to see that she could hurt Julian just as much as herself, as as Killer Frost.
During our chat with Felton on the Flash set, the actor was invited to reflect on his segue from love-to-hate Harry Potter villain to workplace adversary for a post-Flashpoint Barry, on a smaller screen.
“It’s an incredible body of work, [producing] 23 episodes in a very short time. So to work with such a skilled cast as well as crew is something to behold,” he shared. “Everyone manages to work like an incredibly well-oiled machine.”
As for whether his time on TV’s The Flash thus far has made an impression, the answer is an unequivocal yes. “I’ve learned so much here,” Felton attested. “It’s quite a different skill set to be able to say, ‘Here’s a [movie] scene, and we’re going to spend all day doing the scene’ versus saying, ‘Here’s six scenes, every day for the next nine months or whatever.’ Making these scenes good, and under the very, very short amount of time space, is not something I was particularly used to, but working with the boys and girls here…. Obviously, they’re all so incredibly professional, so within 10 minutes of reading a scene off the page, it actually feels like a fully-flourished scene.”

The Flash is slowing down.
“Next season we’re not going to have a speedster” as the Big Bad, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg revealed at a PaleyFest panel for the show and fellow CW super series Arrow, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow on Saturday.
As for Barry’s current foe Savitar, whom Kreisberg said is part of this season’s “pitfalls” theme for the speedster? “We know who he is under there, and we’ve been planning this for a while,” the EP assured the audience.
Viewers might be getting some hints to the speed god’s identity as early as Episode 18, which introduces Abra Kadabra, “a villain from the future,” Kreisberg shared. “He knows who Savitar is. It becomes a moral conundrum to Barry and the team” as to whether to let Abra Kadabra go in order to obtain answers. The EP added that there’s a “great” Barry/Iris scene that tackles the question: “Can you be a hero if you do one bad thing for the greater good?”
Meanwhile, in Episode 19, titled “The Once and Future Flash,” “Barry decides that the only way he can find out what he needs to know is in the future,” Kreisberg previewed.
Other highlights from the “Heroes and Aliens” panel:
* In talking about next week’s Supergirl/The Flash musical crossover, Kreisberg gave a nod to Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon, “who did those kind of episodes the best… They didn’t stop the main, ongoing narrative of the season. Those episodes spoke to what the characters were going through.” Similarly, both Barry and Kara are purposefully at a “romantic crossroads” ahead of the musical and “go on this journey together to either get back the love they think they’ve lost or not.”
* Flash fans, Grant Gustin feels your frustration with the Scarlet Speedster. “I agree most of the time as a viewer and a fan with the backlash that Barry receives,” Gustin admitted, noting that fear has been dictating the character’s decisions more than ever this season.
* Candice Patton would love to put on a leather superhero costume, but at the same time, “I love that she provides this very human quality to this very super show,” the Flash actress shared. “I think she’s extraordinarily important to Barry’s superhero narrative.”
* Reflecting on Arrow‘s 100th episode, star Stephen Amell felt “a much bigger sense of accomplishment than I thought there would be,” the actor said, before (jokingly?) adding, “I feel like the 200th will be easier.”
* Although Supergirl has made creative strides since its move to The CW, exploring issues such as immigration, journalism and LGBT rights, “It’s no disrespect to CBS, who were very gracious hosts to us,” Kreisberg said. “We pitched a lot of what we were going to do in Season 2 to CBS, and they were cool with it.”
* Kreisberg reiterated plans for a “real, true four-way crossover” next season. Amell, meanwhile, recalled CW President Mark Pedowitz’s response when he asked the exec if they’re going to do a crossover event every year: “You’re f–king right we are.”
]]>Having spent much of the day filming an episode that airs later in Season 3, Gustin has kicked off Barry’s trademark sneaks and suited back up in a tux-and-tails. He now is laying supine on the ground, exposed to the elements of a typically cold, very late Vancouver-adjacent night, annnnd… that is about all we can reveal about the intense moment. Because, you know, superspoilers!
But worry not, there is much TVLine can share about the CW hit’s imminent mash-up, which before it wows viewers first had to pass muster with its most discerning critics: a musically gifted cast.
MAKING BEAUTIFUL MUSIC
TOGETHER
“Honestly, I can be a bit of a pedant when it comes to musical theater because it’s kind of my lifeblood. I went to school for it,” The Flash‘s Carlos Valdes shared during our recent visit to the set. Specifically, he participated in the University of Michigan’s theater programs alongside Glee grad Darren Criss — who just so happens to be playing the villain Music Meister in this #DCTV event.
But when all was said and done, Cisco’s portrayer added, “The concept of the episode is very quirky, and very fun. I was pleasantly surprised. We executed it well!”
Valdes’ on-camera reunion with an old classmate is far from the only coincidence brought on by this special occasion. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who cowrote La La Land‘s Academy Award-winning “City of Stars” and contributed a ballad to this episode, also attended the University of
Michigan… and have known series lead Gustin ever since they met his 19-year-old self during a visit to Elon University, where they were conducting a workshop. The Flash‘s Jesse L. Martin meanwhile has been friends with returning guest star Victor Garber (Legends of Tomorrow) “for well over 20 years,” yet this marked the first time they have sung together.
“I got to work with my old pal and sing some beautiful songs,” Martin said, smiling. “That was one of my favorite moments.”
RELATED The Flash‘s Candice Patton Teases ‘Breathless’ Musical Role
Add in the Glee of it all — like Criss, Gustin and Supergirl star Melissa Benoist previously starred on Fox’s musical dramedy — and you almost wonder how this episode didn’t come together sooner. But what brings about this out-of-the-ordinary, sure-to-be-extraordinary outing?
A ‘SADISTIC CUPID’ HITS HIS TARGETS
For never was a story of more woe. Than this of Iris West, and her… Mon-El? At the close of Supergirl‘s Monday episode, the Music Meister materializes in National City to unleash a “whammy” on Kara (played by Benoist)
. When Mon-El and Hank Henshaw (Supergirl‘s Chris Wood and David Harewood) lug the comatose Girl of Steel to Central City for help, Criss’ baddie puts the same hurt on Barry, landing both of the heroes in a dream-like state populated by friend-ly strangers.
Per Candice Patton, “Barry and Kara envision this world where Iris’ character and Mon-El’s character” — named Millie and Tommy — “are very, very deeply in love with each other. And that obviously throws them off, because those are their love interests.” Millie, the “fast-talking, brash daughter of a mobster,” and Tommy are “fighting for their love, because their families don’t want them to be together,” the actress added.
All of which leads to an important lesson to be taught to Barry and Kara, as they navigate this musically delicious world. “Music Meister is almost a sadistic, wannabe Cupid,” Supergirl‘s Jeremy Jordan observed. “His way of telling a love story is by putting you in a trance and making you fight your way out.”
Playing one of Millie’s two dads (alongside Garber), Martin noted, “That’s one of the cool things about [The Flash] — just when you think you’ve settled into the character that you’d originally been given, all of a sudden they find a way to give you something else to do.” Jordan similarly has (as he put it) a “Wizard of Oz-like” counterpart, playing the musical director for a 1940s-era club. “He’s very bossy,” he reported with a laugh, citing the un-Winn-like qualities. “I also gave him a superfun Jimmy Stewart-meets-turn-of-the-century New Yorker accent.”
SONGS THAT HIT ‘HOME’
Amid this tale of mixed-and-matched loves and friendly-but-strange faces, what exactly can viewers expect on the musical front?
As seen above, Valdes teams with Criss, Jordan (on piano) and Legends‘ John Barrowman to “Put a Little Love in Your Heart,” which the Flash fave describes with a laugh as “gratuitous, literally three high tenors and John Barrowman screaming for their lives!” Martin and Garber’s aforementioned duet is titled “More I Cannot Wish You,” while Gustin and Benoist celebrate being “Super Friends” in a tune penned for the crossover by Crazy Ex-Girlfriend creator/star Rachel Bloom.
Though Gustin and Benoist, both hailing from Glee, are no strangers to TV dance numbers, there were still a few nerves. “Grant and Melissa were both worried about it, and yet having such a great time,” Martin shared of the peek he sneaked of the twosome’s impeccably attired tap routine (see photo below). “They were literally going for it, and I was super glad to see that. It was absolutely fantastic.”
The most emotional piece of the five-song playlist, though, stands to be “Runnin’ Home to You,” the original song from La La Land‘s Pasek and Paul. “Beautiful” is the word both Patton and Valdes used to describe Barry’s ballad, while Gustin himself singled out his friends’ tune as his favorite moment of the hour.
A STAR SAYS BRAVO!
Of all the incredible talent assembled on- and off-screen for “Duet,” Gustin gives the biggest props to a Flash crew that kept everyone energized throughout such an involved shoot and so late into the season, when even the biggest pros start Run, Barry, Run!ning on fumes.
“Coming from musical theater and knowing what it takes to do a production number, and also coming from Glee and knowing what it takes to do a production number with cameras and that many people, and then knowing it’s not something that’s normal for us… it was a challenge, which I expected,” Gustin acknowledged. “But what I didn’t expect — and what was really cool — was how the crew really kept me going throughout the experience.
“We did one of the most challenging episodes we’ve ever done at one of the harder parts of the season, but the crew was just thrilled because they had never seen, I think, the types of things we did on set,” Gustin went on. “A lot of these people have been in the industry for decades, and they’ve never worked on a musical of any kind. So it was cool, especially for actors they know to be, oh, singing and dancing! They were having the time of their life, and that kept me going, like being on stage.”
Will you be in the audience for Barry and Kara’s “Duet” this Tuesday?
