The ultra-nationalist crowds that flocked to Poland for its independence day march were seen performing Nazi salutes and burning flares at the event attended by staggering 200,000 people. Police, however, stood idly by.

Crowds of people, including various far-right groups, unleashed a sea of fire and smoke on the streets and squares of the Polish capital of Warsaw during an event marking a centenary of Poland’s independence on Sunday. Videos posted on social media show a Warsaw square being lit with thousands of red flares burnt by the marchers.

Described last year as the largest far-right gathering in the world, participants apparently felt quite comfortable on the Warsaw streets. Photos posted on social media showed members of the Polish National Radical Camp (ONR), which is often described as a neo-Nazi group,  waving their flags as they took part in the celebration.

Members of another ultra-nationalist organization called the All-Polish Youth were seen unfurling a large banner with their symbols during the march.  According to some reports, they also burned an EU flag.

Flares and firecrackers were also seen being thrown around in the streets, even though pyrotechnics were supposed to be prohibited at the rally. Eyewitnesses said that police ignored the antics.

Slogans such as “USA, empire of evil” and “Poland, white and Catholic” were shouted. However, Polish nationalists were not the only ones to attend the controversial event. Side by side with the ONR marched Italian neo-fascists from the radical Forza Nuova movement.

Some of them were wearing balaclavas while others were seen openly performing Nazi salutes.

Such actions prompted no response from the Polish authorities: there are no reports of any detentions or instances of police interference during the march. The Polish police were on strike at the time of the event and warned in advance that they would not be able to provide security for it.

The Polish government also made an unprecedented move by not only sanctioning the event but also taking part in it. President Andrzej Duda, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and the leader of the ruling conservative Law and Justice party, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, all participated in a joint march.

Kaczynski, who is considered to be one of the most powerful men in Poland and is known for his uncompromising views, called the march a “great success,” according to Radio Poland.

A volcano on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali erupted Monday, sending rocks and lava spewing into the air and unleashing a wave of panic across the island.

Residents reported hearing a loud explosion as Mount Agung flung volcanic rocks at least 2 km in the air. A sea of lava spewed from the crater, which ignited nearby vegetation.

Indonesia’s National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BNPB) said the explosions began just after 9pm local time and that the ash column was seen as high as 2,000 meters above Mount Agung’s peak.

About 700 people fled the nearby Banjar Galih village and waited in an evacuation center, SBS News reports.  

The volcano, situated in the northeast of the island, has experienced seismic activity and eruptions since last year. In November authorities ordered the evacuation of as many as 100,000 people after the volcano erupted less than two times in a week. All air traffic at the island’s international airport was also halted leaving thousands of passengers stranded. The airport temporarily closed again on Friday, as a precautionary measure.

Mount Agung is only 49 km from the island’s capital of Denpasar, and some 980 km from the country’s capital of Jakarta. Bali is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, consisting of 450 volcanoes and earthquake activity.

Amid much excitement in 2016, astronomers revealed the discovery of an Earth-sized planet around Proxima Centauri, the star closest to our Sun. This exoplanet, just 4.2 light years from Earth, was close enough to its red dwarf star that water might well exist on its surface.

Alas, now we know that life probably does not live on the planet, at least not on the surface. In March 2016, astronomers using an array of telescopes known as Evryscope observed a “superflare” 10 times larger than any previous one detected from the red dwarf star. Based on these observations and those of other instruments with spectrographs, the astronomers determined that about five of these superflares occur in a given year.

In an unpublished paper that describes their use of a model for interactions between the flares and a planetary atmosphere, the astronomers suggest such extreme solar activity would reduce the ozone of an Earth-like atmosphere by 90 percent within just five years, with complete depletion occurring within a few hundred thousand years. This means that ultraviolet light observed in the recent superflare reached the surface with 100 times the intensity needed to kill even microbic life that is resistant to UV light.

This is the next-generation Porsche 911 Turbo. We don’t know exactly when it’s going to go on sale — we’d guess as a 2019 model — but it’s apparently close enough to production that the automaker is out testing its latest 992-series 911 variant in the city.

The new 911 Turbo has been seen out and about before, but with tacked-on fender flares and without a fixed rear wing and Turbo-specific squared-off exhaust tips. Also note the large air intakes in the rear quarter panels just aft of the doors. The taillights will stretch across the entire rear fascia, similar to what we’ve seen on the latest Panamera and Cayenne, and dual LED driving lights are new additions up front. We’re expecting a mostly digital cockpit, with a large touchscreen in the console and an LCD cluster for the gauges. A bevy of capacitive buttons are also a safe bet.

Of course, this being a 911, the engine will be at the back. We’d expect a heavily breathed-on version of the 3.8-liter flat-six used in other recent 911 models, probably pushing out something near 600 horsepower. Like all automakers, Porsche is integrating electrification into its lineup, so it’s possible we see some sort of hybrid or energy recovery system on this 911 Turbo.

Stay tuned for more on the next 911 Turbo as it filters in. We wouldn’t be surprised to see it make an auto show debut sometime this year.

US stocks slumped on Thursday amid new reports that President Donald Trump was being investigated for obstruction of justice, while investors also digested unexpectedly hawkish guidance from the Federal Reserve.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite index was hit hardest, slipping by 0.8% at 1:29 p.m. ET. The S&P 500 lost 0.4%, while the Dow fell by 0.1%.

The biggest decliners in the tech sector included Alphabet/Google, which was downgraded by Canaccord Genuity, as well as eBay, Yahoo and Apple. All four fell more than 0.8%.

Equity weakness started in earnest Wednesday after the Fed announced a 25-basis-point interest-rate increase as expected but took a surprisingly hawkish stance on the pace of remaining hikes. The central bank also said it would shrink its $ 4.5 trillion balance sheet this year, despite recent data showing that inflation was lagging the Fed’s 2% target.

The Fed now faces a delicate balancing act as it attempts to reconcile flagging inflation with positive economic data like the US unemployment rate, which sits at its lowest in 16 years.

US stocks, which were starting to look immune to the myriad negative headlines surrounding Trump, finally seemed to react to the latest news about the ongoing FBI investigation into Russian meddling in last year’s election. Reports emerged Wednesday that investigators last month began seeking to learn whether Trump tried to interfere in the Russia investigation.

Obstruction of justice is a criminal and impeachable offense, and investors are clearly concerned that Trump will be unable to implement the proposed policies that have carried stocks higher since the election.

The weakness in tech stocks is the latest flare-up for a sector that has been responsible for a large portion of stock gains in recent months. The Nasdaq 100 index dropped by 3% over the two-day period that ended Monday, highlighting the fragility of a rally driven largely by a handful of high-flying mega-cap companies.

The stock sell-off is also being exacerbated by a broad decline in commodities, most notably continued losses in crude oil, which has slipped by nearly 5% over the past two days.

Further, Asian and European stocks were down in regular trading, also applying pressure to the US market.
