Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona, one of the few outspoken Republican critics of President Donald Trump, urged members of his political party to challenge the president, days before he is scheduled to retire from Capitol Hill.
“Somebody does need to challenge the president,” Flake said in a Friday interview with CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta. “I think that the country needs to be reminded what it means to be conservative, certainly on the Republican side, and what it means to be decent as well, because we need a lot more of that in our politics,” Flake said.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Putting a good face on an election that saw his party lose control of the House, President Trump bragged that he had “retired” Arizona Senator Jeff Flake, the Republican who opted to step down rather than support Trump.
“In Jeff Flake’s case it’s me, pure and simple. I retired him. I’m very proud of it, I did the country a great service,” Trump said at a press conference on Wednesday. “He is retired. I’d like to call it another word, but we’re going to treat him with great respect.”
Trump reserved some of his scorn for defeated Republican members of the House who he feels did not support him enough.
“You had some that decided to, let’s stay away, let’s stay away. They did very poorly,” the president said, calling out Carlos Curbelo (Florida), Mike Coffman (Colorado), Mia Love (Utah), Barbara Comstock (Virginia), Erik Paulsen (Minnesota), John Faso (New York), and Peter Roskam (Illinois) by name.
“I’m not sure that I should be happy or sad, but I feel just fine about it,” he added.
The race for Flake’s vacated seat is still too close to call, with Democrat Kyrsten Sinema and Republican Martha McSally only one percentage point apart with nearly all precincts reporting. Republicans picked up two seats in the Senate, retaining their majority, while Democrats gained 28 seats and took control of the House.
Flake announced his retirement last year and did not seek reelection. He claimed his refusal to support Trump’s policies would have made reelection as a Republican candidate impossible and has become a strident critic of the president.

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Arizona), the key figure behind the White House’s decision to reopen an FBI investigation into SCOTUS nominee Brett Kavanaugh, has said he would have not called for the probe if he hoped to get reelected.
Flake has been serving as a Senator for Arizona since 2013. In October last year, he announced that he would not by vying for the seat in the looming congressional elections in November.
In an interview to CBS’s “60 minutes” the outgoing senator admitted that he would not have risked his victory chances by siding with Senate Judicial Committee Democrats in calling for the FBI investigation into the sexual misconduct allegations against Kavanaugh, if he still wanted to keep his congressional job.

“Not a chance,” Flake admitted, adding that he would have had reason whatsoever to deviate from the party line.
There’s no value to reaching across the aisle. There’s no currency for that anymore. There’s no incentive.
The elevator incident was the turning moment that prompted him to join Democrats in their calls for the FBI probe, he said.
Midway through the Friday Senate Judicial Committee hearing, Flake was cornered by women who said they were sexual assault survivors and pleaded with him to delay the Kavanaugh vote.
The lawmaker admitted that he was startled by the story of the woman who confronted him, saying he had a “feeling that this was history” and he made a decision on the spot.
“I don’t think anybody expected – you know, what happened on Friday to happen and I can’t say that I did either.”
“I just knew that we couldn’t move forward, that I couldn’t move forward without hitting the pause button,” he said, adding that he believes that the Kavanaugh saga is “ripping the country apart.”
Flake’s confession has triggered a torrent of angry responses from conservatives on Twitter, accusing the Senator of being a “coward” and a “weak person” who would choose high approval ratings over his constituents.

Confirms @JeffFlake is a REAL flake w/NO guts-integrity-principles. So much for his "Conservative With A Conscience" book & self-label

You are a weak person. HTF did you get elected as a Republican?
Oh, and I wouldn’t try anymore elevator jokes. Flop!

“Senator Flake, could you have done this if you were running for re-election?” “No, absolutely not.” This is where we are, a #twoparty, #zerosum political race to the bottom. No pretense of governing, just partisan warfare. Who cares about constituents—real people?! #letsbebetter

Following Flake’s call for an FBI probe, US President Donald Trump ordered the agency to reopen the investigation that would be limited to one week. The decision drew criticism from Democrats, accusing the White House of an attempt to micromanage the investigation by limiting its scope.
On Sunday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders denied the allegations that the administration has been interfering with the probe.
“We’re not micromanaging this process. It’s a Senate process. It has been from the beginning, and we’re letting the Senate continue to dictate what the terms look like,” Sanders said.
Trump also hit back against the allegations, while taking a swipe at Democrats, tweeting that “for them, it will never be enough.”
Wow! Just starting to hear the Democrats, who are only thinking Obstruct and Delay, are starting to put out the word that the “time” and “scope” of FBI looking into Judge Kavanaugh and witnesses is not enough. Hello! For them, it will never be enough – stay tuned and watch!

Republican Rep. Martha McSally of Arizona is emerging as the GOP establishment’s favorite to replace retiring Sen. Jeff Flake.
But McSally could run into trouble in a possible run against Republican opponents including former state Sen. Kelli Ward — who is backed by former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon and pro-President Donald Trump media — for past comments critical of Trump.
US News and World Report reported last month that McSally was taking steps toward launching a campaign for Flake’s seat, as she indicated interest in the vacancy during a closed-door meeting with the rest of Arizona’s GOP House delegation. The news came after three of Arizona’s other GOP congressmen — Reps. Trent Franks, Paul Gosar, and David Schweikert — ruled out runs for Flake’s seat.
GOP sources told the outlet that McSally has become the consensus candidate of lawmakers and donors.
On Tuesday, The Arizona Republic reported that McSally told House colleagues she is running for the seat.
In an environment in which Bannon has promised to challenge the establishment at every level in 2018, McSally’s past Trump criticism could become an issue.
During a town hall earlier this year, for instance, she called the early weeks of the administration “tremendously bumpy.”
“Some of their decisions and the way they have implemented them have certainly not been well coordinated, not well implemented,” she said. “I’m concerned about distractions. I’m concerned about not shifting from campaigning to governing.”
“He’s our president. So what are we going to do about it?” McSally said.
In a secretly taped recording posted this spring, McSally, who represents somewhat of a swing district in the state, said the current political environment “would have me not prevail” and that “we’re going to hand the gavel to Pelosi in 2018,” referring to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
“They only need 23 seats and the path to that gavel being handed over is through my seat,” she said, noting that “any” GOP member of Congress is “going down with the ship.”
“There’s just an element out there that’s just, like, so against the president,” she said. “Like they just can’t see straight. And all of a sudden on January 20, I’m like his twin sister. I’m, like, responsible for everything he does, and tweets and says. And they want me to be spending my time as a pundit. ‘I disagree with that. I agree with this.’ I have a job in the legislature! … We’re doing the best we can through the minefield that we have to navigate with a tremendous amount of distractions out there.”
McSally refused to make an endorsement during the presidential campaign, but said of Trump, “That’s just not how leaders carry themselves.”

“But I don’t think people should dismiss what he is hearing from people about the level of frustration about lack of opportunity and concerns about safety and security,” she said. “How you deal with that, what you think the solution is — hopefully we can get to where that’s a battle of ideas of public policy solutions for complex problems as opposed to a WWF tournament.”
The Bannon faction has already begun to sound the alarm on McSally.
“If the McConnell establishment runs another ‘Never Trumper’ in Arizona like Martha McSally, expect the full weight of the president’s America First movement to come down upon her like a ton of bricks,” Andy Surabian, an adviser to the Trump-aligned Great America Alliance and a close Bannon adviser, told US News.
Several influential conservative groups, including the Club for Growth and FreedomWorks, said Friday they would oppose a McSally run.
A representative for McSally didn’t respond to a request for comment.
But McSally does have Trump bona-fides that she could stand behind during a campaign. The Arizona Republic recently reported that McSally is the state’s most reliable vote in Congress for Trump’s agenda — more so than the state’s multiple Freedom Caucus members. And in May remarks at the White House, Trump called McSally “my friend” and the “real deal.”
Ross D. Franklin/APAt the moment, Ward is the frontrunner for the seat. But many fear that she is too fringe of a candidate to win in a general election. Last year, Ward ran a losing primary campaign against Sen. John McCain.
What Ward has going for her is increased name recognition and the backing of Trump’s “America First” coalition.
Trump has tweeted in support of Ward’s candidacy, but he has not endorsed the former state senator.
And one of Trump’s top donors, the billionaire hedge fund manager Robert Mercer, has donated $ 300,000 to a pro-Ward super PAC, Politico reported.
Yet in the same month, following a Phoenix rally, Trump met with two possible candidates who had yet to jump into the race: Arizona Treasurer Jeff DeWit and former state GOP Chairman Robert Graham.
In addition to DeWit and Graham, former Rep. Matt Salmon and Jay Heiler, a member of the Arizona Board of Regents, are also considered to be potential candidates in the race.

President Donald Trump went on an extended rant aimed at Republican Sen. Jeff Flake on Wednesday, saying that when he first saw the senator on TV he assumed “he was a Democrat.”
“He was against me from before he ever knew me,” Trump told reporters assembled on the White House lawn as he was about to board Marine One. “He wrote a book about me before I ever met him, before I ever heard his name. His poll numbers in Arizona are so low that he couldn’t win.”
The book Trump is mentioning, “Conscience of a Conservative,” was published this summer, as Flake was providing one of his most forceful rebukes of the president. Flake announced Tuesday that he would not seek reelection in 2018, subsequently blasting the president and his politics in a speech on the Senate floor.
Trump said Wednesday that he does not “blame” Flake “for leaving,” adding that he thinks Flake “did the right thing for himself.”
“But if you know, long before he ever knew me, during the campaign, even before the campaign, I mean, he came out with this horrible book and I said who is this guy?” Trump said of Flake, who has been critical of the president for much of the past two years, dating back to the campaign.
“In fact, I remember the first time I saw him on television — nobody really knew me in terms of politics — but the first time I saw him on television I said ‘I assume he’s a Democrat? Is he a Democrat?’ They said, ‘No, he’s a Republican.’ I said, ‘That’s impossible.'”
He continued blasting Flake’s “terrible” poll numbers, which show him trailing his main GOP primary challenger.
“He’s done terribly for the great people of Arizona, a state that likes Donald Trump very much, as you, even you will admit,” Trump said, adding that he’s “way down in the primary.”
“So he did the smart thing for himself so he can get out somewhat gracefully,” Trump said.
But Trump believes that Flake, one of the Senate’s most conservative members, will vote to pass the tax reform package the president is hoping to push through.
Asked about some of Flake’s pointed comments from the Senate floor on Tuesday, Trump said Flake is “saying that because he has nothing else to say.”
In that 17-minute speech, Flake called the president “reckless, outrageous, and undignified.”
“I rise today with no small measure of regret,” he said. “Regret because of the state of our disunion. Regret because of the disrepair and destructiveness of our politics. Regret because of the indecency of our discourse. Regret because of the core regret because of the coarseness of our leadership. Regret for the compromise of our moral authority.
“And by our, I mean all of our complicity in this alarming and dangerous state of affairs,” he continued. “It is time for our complicity and our accommodation of the unacceptable to end.”
Flake also called on Americans not to regard what is happening in the Trump administration as “normal.”
“We must never adjust to the present coarseness of our national dialogue with the tone set at the top,” he said. “We must never regard as normal the regular and casual undermining of our democratic norms and ideals. We must never meekly accept the daily sundering of our country. The personal attacks, the threats against principles, freedoms and institution, the flagrant disregard for truth and decency, the reckless provocations most often for the pettiest and most personal reasons, reasons having nothing whatsoever to do with the fortunes of the people that we have been elected to serve. None of these appalling features of our current politics should ever be regarded as normal.”
The president initially responded to Flake’s comments in Wednesday morning tweets, which also targeted Republican Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, a fellow retiring senator who has criticized Trump extensively in recent weeks.
“The reason Flake and Corker dropped out of the Senate race is very simple, they had zero chance of being elected. Now act so hurt & wounded!” Trump tweeted.
“Jeff Flake, with an 18% approval rating in Arizona, said ‘a lot of my colleagues have spoken out.’ Really, they just gave me a standing O!” Trump said in a subsequent tweet, mentioning his lunch meeting with Senate Republicans on Tuesday.
In a Washington Post op-ed published Tuesday night, Flake wrote that for “the next 14 months, relieved of the strictures of politics, I will be guided only by the dictates of conscience.”

Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake announced Tuesday that he is dropping out of his reelection campaign, giving a lengthy speech on the Senate floor in which decried the “discord and dysfunction” in modern American politics.
Flake’s announcement Tuesday came as a huge surprise to Republicans and Democrats in Washington. He had long-since started building up a campaign staff for his reelection, in one of the tougher Senate races expected for Republicans in 2018 as they try to hold on to the Senate majority.
“None of this is normal. And what do we, as United States senators, have to say about it?” Flake said on the Senate floor, announcing that he would complete his term which ends in January, 2019. “I have children and grandchildren to answer to and so … I will not be complicit or silent.”
Republican Kelli Ward and Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema had already announced that they would challenge Flake for his seat next year.
Flake told the Arizona Republic before his made the announcement official Tuesday: “The path that I would have to travel to get the Republican nomination is a path I’m not willing to take, and that I can’t in good conscience take.”
“There may not be a place for a Republican like me in the current Republican climate or the current Republican Party,” Flake told the paper.
Flake, a moderate Republican, has often found himself at odds with President Donald Trump — whom he said he did not vote for in 2016. In particular, Flake published a book this year that was highly critical of the president, in which the senator wrote of Trump’s “seeming affection for strongmen and authoritarians” and said that Republicans were wrong to turn a blind eye to Trump’s actions in exchange for legislative priorities, saying: “If this was our Faustian bargain, then it was not worth it.”
After Flake published the book, Trump seemed to endorse one of his challengers.
Flake addressed his public criticism of Trump in his speech Tuesday, which came just after Senate Republicans had a lunch meeting with the president at the Capitol.
“If I have been critical, it is not because I relish criticizing the behavior of the president of the United States. If I have been critical, it is because I believe it is my obligation to do so, and as a matter and duty of conscience, the notion that one should stay silent as the norms and values that keep American strong are undermined and the alliance are routinely threatened by the level of thought that goes into 140 characters — the notion that we should say or do nothing … is misguided,” he said.
Senators applauded when Flake finished his speech, and many — Republicans and Democrats — lined up to shake his hand. Fellow Arizona Sen. John McCain went up to hug Flake as well.
Flake exited the chamber with his wife, Cheryl, who watched his speech from the Senate gallery. At one point he turned to her and said “isn’t this fun?”
When asked about Flake’s decision, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said she had not yet discussed it with Trump, but added: “I think that based on previous statements and certainly based on the lack of support that he has from the people of Arizona, it’s probably a good move.”
Later in her press conference Tuesday, Sanders added: “I didn’t think a lot of Flake’s language was befitting of the Senate floor.”
Both Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and McCain both took to the Senate floor after Flake finished, praising his service in the Senate.
Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker, who is currently in the midst of a high-profile spat with Trump, said Tuesday that Flake is one of the “finest people that I’ve served with. There’s no question.”
Corker, who is retiring at the end of this term as well, said that Flake let him know of his own decision this afternoon, shortly before his speech.
“He’s kind of quiet but he stands for all the things that have made our nation great and he’s willing to continue to say that even though we have demagogues and others trying to take us in other directions,” Corker said, but added in response to a follow-up that he wasn’t using the term “demagogues” in reference to any one person.
Asked if he agreed with the sentiment of Flake’s speech, Corker said: “I think that’s pretty self-evident. I’ve gotta imagine there’s a whole host of people who do.”
Maine Sen. Susan Collins, another moderate Republican who announced earlier this month that she would stay in the Senate, said she is “extremely disappointed” that Flake is retiring. “I will really miss serving with him. I’m sad,” she said.
Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia called the news “a tragedy for the institution” Tuesday, telling reporters that he and a Republican colleague said, “this is very depressing.”
When asked whether he’s worried there won’t be as many outspoken senators to stand up to Trump with the upcoming departures of Flake and Corker, McCain said: “No. I just don’t.”
Flake’s announcement will also have reverberations in Arizona politics, where many more candidates are likely to enter the now-open-seat race on both sides.
Allies of former White House adviser Steve Bannon were already casting Flake’s retirement as a victory. Andy Surabian, a senior adviser to the pro-Trump Great America PAC and a Bannon ally, said that Flake’s decision not to run for reelection should be viewed as “a warning shot to the establishment that they’re no longer running the show.”
“The Republican Party is now defined by President Trump and his movement and not Jeff Flake or Mitch McConnell,” Surabian added.
Great America PAC has already announced its support for Ward, who was running against Flake in the Republican primary. Bannon himself has also endorsed Ward.
“This is a very good thing for Republicans, both in the primary and the general,” said one Arizona GOP consultant. “Now, in all likelihood, there’ll be a stronger candidate without [anti=Trump] baggage in the race.”
But, the same consultant warned, the news might not be as positive for Ward’s candidacy as it would first appear. “Her entire candidacy, her entire campaign is premised on the idea that she was running against a liberal Republican or a less conservative Republican,” the consultant said.
“Kelli Ward is never coming to the Senate,” said one Republican strategist who believes Flake’s exit will open the door to a more electable Republican candidate and that, even if she were to win the nomination, Ward would not be able to beat the Democratic nominee.
The strategist also cautioned against counting Flake’s decision as a victory for Bannon. “Jeff Flake was in trouble because he attacked the president, not because of Steve Bannon.”
Chris DeRose, an attorney who has worked in Arizona politics, suggested that another Republican would have one major advantage over Flake in the race. “With Flake, [the primary] would’ve been a fight over what it means to be a Republican in this day and age,” he said.
