Built on the outskirts of Detroit—for another year or so—and with a well-deserved spot in driveways across the country, the Ford Focus is as American as apple pie. During its journeys, the Focus has accumulated many gifts, and it has bestowed them on the American consumer; among them are lithe handling and impressive fuel efficiency. Unfortunately, these gifts come with some compromises. The Focus is outclassed by larger rivals that offer more passenger space, larger cargo holds, and more modern features. Still, it’s an easy car to recommend, and its two body styles—hatchback and sedan—offer broad appeal. There are even high-performance ST and RS versions and a plug-in electric model, but we review those models separately. READ MORE ››

The only previous Chrirstmas Eve Premier League match was Leeds v Manchester United in 1995, which also fell on a Sunday.
Sky Sports is planning to announce next month that at least one match will be played on December 24, which is likely to be the standout clash of Arsenal v Liverpool.
And Klopp has voiced his displeasure at the potential schedule.
“If the supporters want to see a game on Christmas Eve then probably the television broadcaster will find a way to deliver it,” Klopp said.
“If we play on December 24th I am not sure we can fight against it.
“Sky has to make a decision if they really want to bring supporters on to the streets that night.
“For us, we are used to it. It is not a normal time and if we don’t play on the 24th, we’ll play the 25th or 26th. But it is still Christmas for our families.
“Just think of all the other people involved who have to go there. Maybe we will play without the media – that would be nice, just one camera.
“I really cannot imagine that anyone wants to watch football on that night.”
Fans from both Arsenal and Liverpool have vehemently opposed the changes, which is set to disrupt many fan’s own Christmas schedule.
Liverpool fan group The Spirit of Shankly said: “Changing to Christmas Eve would have an untold impact on staff and supporters, particularly away supporters.
“Supporters would be faced with the prospect of getting home in the early hours of Christmas morning.
“We hope that common sense will prevail and that both clubs, police, television companies and the Premier League decide against such a move.”
The Arsenal Supporters’ Trust echoed their northern rivals, tweeting: “We hope the correct decision will be made regarding Arsenal vs Liverpool over the Christmas period. Show some respect to home and away fans.”
This is not the first time Klopp has expressed his displeasure at the festive period of Premier League games.
Last season, Liverpool were made to play Manchester City and Sunderland in less than 46 hours.
The German boss said at the time: “Now I have seen the fixtures I am not too happy.
“We have less than 48 hours between our game against Man City on December 31 and in Sunderland on the 2nd.
“Forty-eight hours is an interesting idea but less than 48 hours I cannot believe.”

Football: Socceroos impress in draw against Chile at Confederations Cup.

FOOTBALL Federation Australia has released the fixture for the 2017-18 A-League season.
And while there are only so many ways you can spruce up a draw that sees 10 teams play each other three times in a season, to be fair to FFA this is potentially its best crack yet.
Let’s call it “The FFA is listening” draw.
Right off the bat there are still no international breaks, which is sure to irk many a fan and pandit and may potentially land head office in hot water if the Socceroos are involved in cutthroat World Cup qualifying playoffs either side of the opening weekend.
But that aside, this is a draw that is laced with common sense.

It is also the first iteration of a fixture that will see a commercial television network — Network 10 — broadcast a game a week: Saturday night prime time.
And to that end, every club gets a fair crack at showcasing themselves and their sponsors on the national stage.
Unashamedly FFA has given the “big four” clubs preference, with Sydney FC (10 times), Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City (eight times each) and Western Sydney (seven times) featuring the most.
The AFL’s marquee Friday night slot is usually the exclusive domain of the big-drawing and the well-performing clubs and FFA could have been forgiven for following a similar path with its Saturday night slot on Network 10 — which will run a simulcast of the Fox Sports coverage on ONE.

But Newcastle, Central Coast, Wellington and Perth have not been frozen out entirely.
The Mariners (five times), Glory, Phoenix and Jets (three times each) all get a good crack.
The split round is also back — twice this time.
And while some may suggest it robs the season of momentum at the back end, no one can argue that it is not a great attempt to help Sydney, Victory and, potentially, the Roar, in their Asian Champions League pursuits.
The three teams will have a weekend off in mid-February and early March, with FFA reserving the right to switch those dates if there is a change in the ACL calendar, which there was last season.
The summer of football is now actually a genuine summer of football, with 25 games to take place over 25 days across the holiday period.
During this time there will be two Monday games, three Tuesday games, three Wednesday games and two Thursday games — a great opportunity to take advantage of kids and their parents being on holidays.
Blockbusters and derbies have also been well spread out throughout the season, while all teams will play each other once home and away in the first 18 rounds.

The Manchester United manager has whined about the fixture pile-up but grudgingly accepts the importance of the integrity of the competition.
However, the moment that Sunday’s opponents Crystal Palace guaranteed their Premier League safety last weekend by beating Hull, he says the final match should have been put forward 24 hours.
Instead, he will have to play a virtually unrecognisable team at Old Trafford for their final send-off of the season against Sam Allardyce’s side.
Speaking after his side played out a stale 0-0 draw with Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium, he said: “Any other country in the world, the match would be Saturday. We are sixth, Crystal Palace are safe. The moment Crystal Palace beat Hull, and Swansea were safe, it needed to be Saturday. It would be in any country in the world.
“I did not ask for the Premier League to change it. When I know the battle is lost, I don’t fight the battle. You are English since you are born, I am here already seven years – I never saw any detail of trying to care about the English teams involved in European competition.
“I never saw that with Chelsea, Manchester United or Manchester City last year. It is a lost battle and you have to accept what it is.
“I just hope the fans support the team forgive some naivety and lack of confidence. And that Big Sam shows he is a good friends and goes soft on us – tells Wilfried Zaha to go slow and leaves Christian Benteke at home.
“Arsenal, Tottenham and Southampton all away – if you do not play with a minimum of senior players you lose by five or six. That is not good for morale, so we tried to pick a team to give them the chance to win.
“Sunday is a different story. Paul Pogba will come because he has not played or trained since his dad passed away but I will only put three or four of my boys out there, rotating them throughout the game. I need to give some stability to the kids so they can play the game.
“But there will be Demetri Mitchell, Scott McTominay, Axel Tuanzebe, Eric Bailly, Josh Harrop and Zachary Dearnley.” Mourinho also confirmed that Joel Castro Pereira would be in goal and Marouane Fellaini will also be missing as he struggles to get fit for Stockholm from a hamstring strain he suffered during the match.
“Marouane says it is not a tear from his experience earlier in his career when he had one,” Mourinho said. “He says he just had a bad feeling in the hamstring. Normally, trusting his feelings, he should be okay.”
The only person who seemed to benefit from playing what was effectively a meaningless fixture was Sergio Romero, whose performance will give him a huge boost of confidence just days after being told he would maintain the Europa League place he has held all competition right the way through to the final.
David De Gea, linked with a move to Real Madrid, was left in Manchester and will not play again this season but Mourinho reiterated he does not want his first choice goalkeeper to leave.
“David is David and Sergio is Sergio – the Spain goalkeeper and the Argentina goalkeeper,” Mourinho said. “For me it is amazing to have it.
“The difficult thing for a no. 1 and no.2 is who does not play. But because of their relationship, it is never a problem . “I have never seen two goalkeepers be such friends. Normally goalkeepers when there is no big difference in quality are not the best friends – they are rivals within the same club. But everybody accepts those decisions.” Romero was called into action as early as the sixth minute, when he saved Manolo Gabbiadini’s penalty after Mike Dean pointed to the spot even though Bailly’s handball was clearly outside the area.
In the second half, he punched away a Dusan Tadic free kick then blocked solidly from Romeu’s low drive.
A somewhat photogenic Romero save from James Ward-Prowse was another one to add to his personal album, but in truth, although Anthony Martial hit the post late on, for most people the game itself was one to forget.
It is now over six hours since Southampton scored and the lack of buzz around St Mary’s has put question marks over Claude Puel’s future ahead of a board meeting next week.
But the Frenchman said: “Any team has a debrief at the end of the season, that is normal. The last game is very important and we want to keep a good focus on that. After will be time to discuss any differences, like I say, the same as at any club.”
Dortmund lost 3-2 to Monaco tonight after the original match was postponed following the explosions which saw Marc Bartra hospitalised.
The team bus was hit with explosions as it drove towards the stadium leading to the match being called off just 15 minutes before the scheduled kick off.
But Tuchel claims Dortmund were not spoken to regarding the rescheduling.
UEFA said it made the decision after consulting both teams, however Tuchel said he and his players were not asked.
“We weren’t asked at any point. We were told by text message that the decision had been made in Switzerland,” he said.
“When they told us ‘you’re up tomorrow’, we felt completely ignored.
“We would have liked more time to take stock. This gives you the feeling of impotence, that we have to keep functioning and nothing else matters.
“I encouraged everyone to take the game seriously but football is not the most important thing in the world.”
Tuchel reiterated his disappointement with UEFA and said he asked the players if they were ready to play – despite being told the were by the officials in Switzerland.
“We were informed by text message that UEFA was making this decision,” he added.
“A decision made in Switzerland that concerns us directly. We will not forget it, it is a very bad feeling.
“A few minutes after this attack, the only question that was asked was, ‘Are you ready to play?’. As if we had thrown a beer on our coach.
“At that time, we did not know the reasons for this attack. There is a feeling of helplessness. The date was imposed on us. What we think has not interested anyone. We weren’t asked about playing the game.
“I just wanted more time, a few more days. In a few days, we will not have digested completely but time helps us to find a solution.
“It is important to have a chance to realise this dream and our team was not at the top in concentration to make a difference at this level.
“UEFA is eager to continue playing. Of course we have to keep it going, but we still want to be competitive. We do not want to use the situation as an excuse.
“We wished we would have had more time to deal with what happened, but someone in Switzerland decided we must play.
“Every player has the right to deal with it in his way. The team did not feel in the mood, in which you must be for such a game.
“We let the players choose if they wanted to play. But this morning, we found that the training had done good, that it had made us think of something else.
“We were attacked as men and we tried to solve the problem on the ground.
“Everyone has their own way of reacting to events. The players had the choice not to play but no one chose this option.”
JOSE MOURINHO was sporting a new haircut ahead on the eve of his 54th birthday – but it didn’t stop his normal paranoia surfacing about the football authorities conspiring against his team.
