The iconic actor, 93, has often been ridiculed for his ropey accent in the 1964 film, as he played Bert the chimneysweep. Now, he’s back – as Mr Dawes Jr. And in a new interview, he’s joked about having coaching in order to perfect his (non-Cockney) accent for his brief cameo, and how the jokes have not stopped over the last 54 years about how he sounded last time out.

“I’ve taken it on the chin for 60 years about my atrocious Cockney accent in the first movie,” he told The New York Times.

“No one has ever forgotten it.”

And of the new sequel, he added: “They had a language gal almost handcuffed to me.

”She made me sound pretty good. They won’t laugh at me on this one.”

Van Dyke’s original co-star Julie Andrews does not feature in the movie, with one rumour suggesting she was initially considered for the role of the Balloon Lady – a part ultimately played by Angela Lansbury.

But Emily Blunt told Variety: “There was discussion about, you know, that maybe she would come and do a bit in the movie and she was so generous actually.

“She said to Rob [Marshall, director], ‘Do you know what this is? This is Emily’s version of her and I don’t want it to be that she’s playing Mary Poppins the whole way through but then I come in and there’s like oh, ‘but there’s the real Mary Poppins’, you know?”

Producer Marc Platt added: “She wasn’t supposed to be in it at all.

“But she’s a friend of Rob’s and a friend of ours and a big fan of Emily Blunt and has been lovely since day one about how this is Emily’s turn and how happy she is for her.

Alongside Blunt in the cast are Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer as the grown-up Banks children.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is also on board, alongside Meryl Streep and Colin Firth.

Mary Poppins Returns is out now.

Windows 10 1809: iCloud incompatibility fixed, but other blockers remain

While the rollout of Windows 10 version 1809 (the October 2018 Update) has been problematic, Microsoft really does try to avoid sending the update to configurations that it knows just won’t work properly.

One of these situations involved PCs with Apple’s iCloud client. The system would break when trying to sync or update Shared Albums when used on Windows 1809, and, accordingly, Microsoft blocked installation of the update on systems with iCloud installed. Similarly, the iCloud client could be installed on Windows 1809 because Apple had a broken version check that didn’t recognize that version 1809 was indeed the current Windows version.

Both issues appear to be fixed now. Apple has released iCloud for Windows version 7.8.1, which resolves both the crash and the bad version check. After upgrading to this version, the Windows 10 Update will no longer be blocked and will install in the normal way.

In 1999, an English solicitor named Sally Clark went on trial for the murder of her two infant sons. She claimed both succumbed to sudden infant death syndrome. An expert witness for the prosecution, Sir Roy Meadow, argued that the odds of SIDS claiming two children from such an affluent family were 1 in 73 million, likening it to the odds of backing an 80-1 horse in the Grand National four years in a row and winning every time. The jury convicted Clark to life in prison.

But the Royal Statistical Society issued a statement after the verdict insisting that Meadow had erred in his calculation and that there was “no statistical basis” for his stated figure. Clark’s conviction was overturned on appeal in January 2003, and the case has become a canonical example of the consequences of flawed statistical reasoning.

A new study in Frontiers in Psychology examined why people struggle so much to solve statistical problems, particularly why we show a marked preference for complicated solutions over simpler, more intuitive ones. Chalk it up to our resistance to change. The study concluded that fixed mindsets are to blame: we tend to stick with the familiar methods we learned in school, blinding us to the existence of a simpler solution.

Microsoft says it fixed a Windows 10 update bug that deleted folders https://briefnews.eu/microsoft-says-it-fixed-a-windows-10-update-bug-that-deleted-folders/ https://briefnews.eu/microsoft-says-it-fixed-a-windows-10-update-bug-that-deleted-folders/#respond Tue, 09 Oct 2018 21:59:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/microsoft-says-it-fixed-a-windows-10-update-bug-that-deleted-folders/

Last week the October 2018 update for Windows 10 had barely arrived before Microsoft was forced to pause its rollout, as a few users complained of missing files. Now Microsoft says it has identified and fixed the problem, which was related to a feature called “Known Folder Redirection (KFR)” and an attempt to remove extra duplicate folders that could cause lost files in three specific scenarios.

It isn’t ready to begin delivering the fixed 1809 update to users yet, but a change that’s already noticeable is in its Windows Insider feedback hub. While Microsoft maintains that the number of users impacted by the problem was small (“one one-hundredth of one percent”) the severity of the bug meant it deserved attention even if only a few people saw it.

Now users can include a note about impact and severity when they’re reporting something in the feedback hub, so that the test team isn’t just flooded with fan requests for a hotly-discussed feature when a more major issue is going unnoticed. Anyone who is still missing data after installing the original update can contact Microsoft support or go to one of its retail stores where they can attempt to recover lost files.

  • J.Crew is redefining its look as it works to win back customers.
  • The namesake brand saw its sales decrease for three consecutive years prior to its most recent fiscal quarter, when comparable sales increased by 1%.
  • The new J.Crew is less preppy and more like its successful sister brand, Madewell. It offers more trendy styles and a wider range of sizes.
  • But when we visited, we found that one big flaw still remained.

J.Crew is ditching its preppy roots and redefining itself in an effort to win back customers.

The once hugely popular preppy brand had been on a downward spiral until its most recent fiscal quarter, when it saw comparable sales increase by 1%. Prior to that, sales had slipped for three consecutive years.

Part of why the brand has consistently struggled is that some customers see it as overpriced, generic, and even “wannabe trendy.” Former J.Crew creative director Jenna Lyons left in early 2017 and was followed by longtime CEO Mickey Drexler.

Now, J.Crew is trying to redefine itself by branching out beyond its iconic preppy style and offering a wider variety of styles and sizes.

“You can’t be one price. You can’t be one aesthetic. You can’t be one fit,” new CEO Jim Brett said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.

It’s also looking to its more successful sister brand, Madewell, for inspiration, adding products like sweaters with French slogans and high-waisted denim pieces that are more likely to be found at Madewell.

We visited a J.Crew store in New York City shortly after the rebrand launched. Here’s what we found:

There was also a sign in the front of the store that explained the philosophy behind “The New Crew.” It ended with: “Coming together, doing what you love, wearing what you love.”

There were a ton of new products from the Point Sur brand, including basic sweaters, denim jackets, maxi skirts, and fur vests.

Star Wars backlash: THIS huge Last Jedi problem with Rey and Luke has been FIXED https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-backlash-this-huge-last-jedi-problem-with-rey-and-luke-has-been-fixed/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-backlash-this-huge-last-jedi-problem-with-rey-and-luke-has-been-fixed/#respond Thu, 05 Jul 2018 01:13:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-backlash-this-huge-last-jedi-problem-with-rey-and-luke-has-been-fixed/

By now everyone knows that a large and very vocal part of the Star Wars fan base had some major issues with Episode 8.

Siphoning out the more misogynistic and hateful elements still leaves the majority of the complaints intact.

Two of the biggest problems focus on Luke Skywalker’s disappointing failure to have a truly dynamic and triumphant moment, and Rey’s seemingly inexplicable Force abilities whith virtually no training.

Finally this has been tackled head on in a new official release, but is it enough to placate fans?

The associated novelisations and comics have already become a valued resource for fans, since they always provide far greater insights into character motivations and actions.

However, this time the revelation it is far more simple and yet enormously powerful and may finally put some fan frustrations to rest.

Remember the final confrontation on Ahch-To when Rey faces off against Luke and rebels? They even have a brief lightsaber ‘battle.’

Luke is one of the all-time greatest and most poweful users of the Force, Dark or Light side. Yet Rey seemed to outfight him, overpower him and leave him sprawling and defeated on the ground.

This was just of the moments which fuelled the “Mary Sue’ slurs, accusing Disney of creating a character who is so perfect and so destined to always win that no logical plot development is necessary to explain her superiority in everything.

The scene also, yet again, portrayed a weak and ineffective Luke.

Marvel’s new Last Jedi comic Issue #4 explains what really happened.

Gary Whitta’s new, official canon version of the scene shows that Luke actually slipped and stumbled on some pebbles, which brought him to the ground. It was tsis not Rey’s superior strength or skill which brought him down.

While this somewhat counters the ‘Mary Su’ effect, it unfortunately still presents Luke as a Jedi who is no longer master of his environment, no longer fleet and steady of foot, no longer a great Jedi warrior.

Disney may still have a long way to go to ever bring back the fans alienated and disaffected by Rian Johnson’s Last Jedi.

THE LAST JEDI ISSUE #4 IS OUT NOW

Microsoft on Tuesday patched two Windows vulnerabilities that attackers are actively exploiting in the wild to install malicious apps on the computers of unwitting users.

The first vulnerability resides in the VBScript Engine included in all currently supported versions of Windows. A so-called use-after-free flaw involving the way the engine handles computer memory allows attackers to execute code of their choice that runs with the same system privileges chosen by the logged-in user. When targeted users are logged in with administrative rights, attackers who exploit the bug can take complete control of the system. In the event users are logged in with more limited rights, attackers may still be able to escalate privileges by exploiting a separate vulnerability.

CVE-2018-8174, as the flaw is formally indexed, is being actively exploited by attackers, Microsoft officials said. The vulnerability was discovered by antivirus provider Kaspersky Lab, which then reported it to Microsoft. In the exploits observed by Kaspersky Lab:
