Those previously on the fence about getting a Fitbit Ionic smartwatch now have a new model to consider.

Fitbit revealed its device collaboration with Adidas today—the Ionic Adidas Edition is a spiced-up Ionic smartwatch featuring an Adidas-made watch face, special wristbands, and the Adidas Train app for runners. Similar to the Apple Watch Nike+ edition, this version of Fitbit’s smartwatch combines all of the features of the original Ionic with exclusive perks developed in collaboration with Adidas that users can’t get on any other Ionic model.

The Adidas Edition’s case is identical to that of a regular Ionic, but the former comes preloaded with a new Adidas-made watch face with the company’s logo at the top, huge block-like numbers for the time in the middle, and a bottom stats row featuring steps taken, current heart rate, and the date. Exclusive bands for the Adidas Edition are available as well, both of which have many small holes along the band’s entire surface. These kinds of perforations allow more air to pass through to the skin, reducing the possibility of skin irritation during long periods of use. These bands are also swim-ready, making them a good option to outfit the Ionic with before tracking a swim.

Period time? Femtech app Clue launches on Fitbit’s Ionic smartwatch https://briefnews.eu/period-time-femtech-app-clue-launches-on-fitbits-ionic-smartwatch/ https://briefnews.eu/period-time-femtech-app-clue-launches-on-fitbits-ionic-smartwatch/#respond Thu, 22 Feb 2018 14:35:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/period-time-femtech-app-clue-launches-on-fitbits-ionic-smartwatch/

Period-tracking app Clue announced today that it is launching on Fitbit’s Ionic smartwatch, thereby allowing women to track their period, PMS symptoms, sexual activity, energy, and fertility windows directly from their wrists.

“The new Clue app on Ionic is the next step in giving users the ability to connect their workout with their cycle,” wrote Clue cofounder and CEO Ida Tin, in an email to VentureBeat. “Clue helps its users to understand their cycle and its impact across their lives, including fitness and health. Research has shown a connection between exercise and the cycle. With the wearable market growing year-on-year, it is incredibly exciting to partner with Fitbit and become the first female health app available on Fitbit Ionic.”

Fitbit started selling its smartwatch in October for $ 300. This is the company’s first ever smartwatch, sporting GPS, heart rate monitoring technology, and support for Fitbit Pay, among other features. The watch provides access to more than 400 apps and clock faces and is compatible across most Android, iOS, and Windows phones.

Clue users can feed their Fitbit activity, sleep, weight, nutrition, and heart rate data into the Clue app to help improve cycle predictions. Fitbit’s 25 million user base will surely give a good boost to Clue, which currently has five million users across 190 countries. The Clue app is free and is available in 15 languages.

When asked whether Clue has plans to become a contraceptive app, Tin was very clear:

Clue is not, and has never presented itself as, a contraceptive. While we support innovation in reproductive health technology, we disagree with the scientific interpretations currently used by apps which position themselves as contraceptives. Fundamentally, we believe that a higher standard of research and transparent communication is necessary for fertility awareness contraceptive apps. There should be as little discrepancy as possible between the understanding of actual risk, and the risk assumed by users. We are excited about the possibility of one day supporting a digital contraceptive product, but would take a very different approach to research and research application in technology, as well as to communication around efficacy, effectiveness, and risk.

Stockholm, Sweden-based Natural Cycles is the first app to have been approved as a contraceptive in the European Union. The startup recently received criticism after several women blamed the app for unwanted pregnancies.

Founded in 2012, Berlin-based Clue has raised $ 30 million to date from investors that include Union Square Ventures (USV), Mosaic Ventures, and FJ Labs. The startup currently has 55 employees.

Fitbit’s smartwatch struggles are real and not just in hardware https://briefnews.eu/fitbits-smartwatch-struggles-are-real-and-not-just-in-hardware/ https://briefnews.eu/fitbits-smartwatch-struggles-are-real-and-not-just-in-hardware/#respond Thu, 13 Apr 2017 02:51:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fitbits-smartwatch-struggles-are-real-and-not-just-in-hardware/

Fitbit’s smartwatch woes go beyond GPS and waterproofing: the company is also facing challenges building out the third-party app experience on its upcoming smartwatch, two people familiar with the company’s plans have said.

Yesterday Yahoo Finance reported that Fitbit’s not-yet-announced smartwatch wouldn’t ship until this fall, and that it will look similar to Blaze, the company’s current fitness watch. The report also said that Fitbit plans to ship Bluetooth headphones this year.

The Verge has independently confirmed the smartwatch is slated to ship in the fall. The smartwatch is also the first to be designed completely by Fitbit’s own internal design team. But additional details reveal some early challenges around the smartwatch’s development.

While the company’s co-founder and chief executive James Park said recently that Fitbit was planning to launch its own app store, that app store is unlikely to be ready in time for the smartwatch’s launch, these people said. Instead, the company will take an “iPhone-like approach,” launching the hardware with some custom-made apps but no app store to start. Right now Fitbit is trying to entice key app partners to build these apps, but may resort to building them internally, since a software development kit may not be ready.

The upcoming watch’s user interface has been described as very similar to the UI on the Blaze watch. Users will swipe through apps the way they currently swipe through Fitbit’s homegrown applications on the Blaze, but the idea is to have maps, music, and third-party fitness apps on the new smartwatch, too — provided Fitbit can get the apps made.

Of course, it’s possible that Fitbit customers might not even care that much about the third-party app experience, given that Fitbits haven’t supported apps like that to date. And the most beneficial features of smartwatches often come from core apps — like built-in messaging, payments, and fitness tracking. But Fitbit did cite Pebble’s homegrown software and enthusiastic community of app developers as one of its motives for buying the smaller smartwatch company.

In general there are feelings of frustration within Fitbit around what some call “do-overs”: the Flex 2, for example, suffered from production issues, and the GPS module within the not-yet-announced smartwatch had to be rebuilt. One source says that Fitbit’s Bluetooth headphones have been simpler to make: they’ve been described as standard Bluetooth workout headphones, designed to be worn around the back of the neck, and aren’t expected to have activity-tracking or heart rate sensors included in the first version.

It hasn’t been an easy few months for Fitbit, after a disappointing holiday season and a subsequent round of layoffs. Fitbit has since released one updated activity tracker, the Alta HR wristband, but the company is overdue for a truly new device.

Fitbit has also considered making a new product aimed at elderly people, people familiar with the company’s plans said. The plans for this product were presented late last year at a company all-hands meeting. However, the executive who presented the product has since left the company, and another former employee who recently left says the project’s fate is now unknown.

Fitbit declined to comment on these details, and issued the same statement that it did to yesterday’s report: “We know there is a lot of interest in our entry into the smartwatch category,” a spokesperson said. “We don’t have news to share at this time and do not comment on rumors or speculation.”

Where is Fitbit’s smartwatch? https://briefnews.eu/where-is-fitbits-smartwatch/ https://briefnews.eu/where-is-fitbits-smartwatch/#respond Mon, 27 Mar 2017 15:51:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/where-is-fitbits-smartwatch/

Fitbit’s latest device, the Alta HR, is more of the same.

For Fitbit fans, this is great news. Since 2009, the company has built an empire on activity trackers, and Fitbit has shrunk its heart rate sensing technology down into smaller and smaller packages, this time fitting it inside the body of the preexisting Alta wearable, which Fitbit markets as its most fashionable gadget.

But more of the same is bad news for all but the most diehard Fitbit users. The adage “if it ain’t broke” doesn’t fit here.

After subpar holiday sales in 2016, Fitbit announced plans to axe 110 jobs — six percent of its staff. Word of this drove Fitbit’s stock down 12 percent that day, and the company hasn’t recovered since. Amid competition from Apple and Garmin, among others, Fitbit has found that its strategy of selling more or less the same devices every year isn’t working. Now it’s time to ask: What will Fitbit’s next act be? It is certainly not the Alta HR.

It’s hard to cheer for Fitbit’s latest product, an unremarkable upgrade to the slimmed-down Alta tracker. In the little time I’ve spent with it I can attest that it looks like a Fitbit, feels like a Fitbit, and appears just as reliable and sturdy as the company’s recent products. It will probably sell like a Fitbit, too — still something most wearable makers dream of, but that was once a stronger argument in favor of such products than it is today.

If you already like Fitbits or have your heart set on trying one, by all means get an Alta HR. If you aren’t swayed yet, this device is hardly any more convincing than last year’s release.

Since Fitbit outgrew its pebble-shaped step counters a few years ago, the company has walked the line between smart fitness watch and smartwatch. Feature for feature, this makes the $ 130 Alta tracker and the $ 150 Alta HR both pretty good deals. But Fitbit’s expanding features — most recently, quirky reminders to move and smarter sleep tracking — are starting to overwhelm the company’s wide and narrow bracelet-sized screens.

Fitbit itself has suggested that a full-fledged smartwatch is coming soon. But after buying indie smartwatch makers Pebble and Vector for a combined $ 38 million, how much longer can the company wait?

At the press unveiling for the Alta HR, Fitbit teased that its ability to miniaturize its heart rate technology and make room for other sensors will open new opportunities for the company in the future. Hopefully, Fitbit does something interesting and new with all that extra space — and soon. Our attention spans are at stake.

This model’s packing a 15.6" display, Intel Core i7 processor, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M graphics, and even a whopping 512GB SSD. Plus, it looks like a normal laptop for a normal person, with none of the neon lights and weird aggressive angles that plague so much gaming gear.

The UE Boom 2 is the waterproof sequel for one of the best Bluetooth speakers of all time, and Amazon’s marked it down to $ 107 today, the best price we’ve ever seen.

If you’ve always wanted surround sound at home, but have been scared off by its cost and complexity, Amazon’s running the a great deal on Vizio’s turnkey 5.1 sound bar system.

This is a newest version of the system than we’ve written about in the past, but it still has all the same features, plus a few new tricks. The biggest change is the design of the subwoofer; it’s now slim enough to fit under a couch, making the system even less obtrusive. It also includes Google Cast support for seamless audio streaming from over 100 popular apps, without futzing around in your Bluetooth settings.

Like the previous models though, the 45" sound bar still plugs directly into your TV over optical or HDMI-ARC, no receiver required. And the wireless subwoofer still acts as a receiver for the two wired satellite speakers, meaning you won’t have to run a cable from your TV to the back of the room. I have the 38" 2015 model of this system, and absolutely love it.

Today’s price is within a couple bucks of an all-time low, and about $ 100 less than usual, but it’s only available for Prime members.

There’s been a lot of news this month, but by far the biggest headline has been that the PS4 is getting external hard drives with its next firmware update. If you need a spare to store all of your games, here’s a 2TB external from WD for $ 70, which is about as cheap as they ever get.
