Google’s acquisition of Fitbit closed in early 2021, but we haven’t seen much in the way of changes yet. 9to5Google spotted a big upcoming change posted on Fitbit’s help site: account migrations! A new Fitbit help page has outlined the plan for the coming Google account migration. If this goes anything like the Nest account migrations (done by the same Google Hardware division), Fitbit users are in for a wild ride.

Google’s support page says, “We plan to enable use of Fitbit with a Google account sometime in 2023” and that at that point “some uses of Fitbit will require a Google account, including to sign up for Fitbit or activate newly released Fitbit devices and features.” That means optional account migrations for existing users in 2023. Google also says, “Support of Fitbit accounts will continue until at least early 2025. After support of Fitbit accounts ends, a Google account will be required to use Fitbit. We’ll be transparent with our customers about the timeline for ending Fitbit accounts through notices within the Fitbit app, by email, and in help articles.”

The merging of accounts will, of course, mean that Google gets your health data. Google says that “you’ll need to consent to transfer your Fitbit user data from Fitbit to Google” and that “Google will then provide you with Fitbit under Google’s Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and binding commitments for Fitbit.” Part of those EU commitments, which Google chose to apply to the whole world, is that “Google will not use Fitbit health and wellness data for Google Ads.”

San Jose, California, police charged 90-year-old Anthony (Tony) Vincent Aiello in the gruesome death of his 67-year-old stepdaughter after obtaining dramatic health data recorded by her Fitbit Alta HR device.

The stepdaughter, Karen Navarra, was found dead in her house on Thursday, September 13, from multiple deep and instantly incapacitating skull wounds likely inflicted using a small hatchet or axe, according to a police report and autopsy. Her Fitbit data indicated the exact moments those wounds occurred, with her heart rate dramatically spiking then crashing to nothing. The timing of that plummet led to Aiello’s arrest.

A co-worker made the initial discovery of Navarra’s murder while checking in on her after she didn’t show up for her job as a pharmacy technician at the Regional Medical Center, where she had worked for 45 years. Police arriving on the scene reported that they found Navarra slouched in a chair at her dining room table, covered in blood and surrounded by blood-splattered surfaces and curtains.

Called the Fitbit Ace, the new band is designed specifically for children. It comes in two colors — purple and blue — and costs $ 100.

When Fitbit said it was working on a “family” of devices for this year, it really wasn’t kidding. While Mom and Dad might choose to strap on a Versa, Fitbit now has a fitness tracker — the Fitbit Ace — meant exclusively for wee ones.

If it looks familiar, well, it should: Fitbit says it recycled the design language last seen in its Alta HR, and gave it a more durable, plasticky body to better suit the swaths of youngsters the company is going after. The experience of using the $ 100 Fitbit Ace remains largely unchanged, though, which means you strap one on your child and let them run off into the sunset. The built-in screen gives kids 8 and up a running tally of their step counts, not to mention the occasional reminder to get off the couch and maybe do something outside instead.

The real changes come in the way parents get to manage their children’s’ Fitbits. When the Ace officially launches later in Q2, parents can create family accounts that provide at-a-glance info on all connected Fitbits. From there, you could do more than just monitor how many steps junior is taking — you’ll also have the right of approval over incoming friend requests. Fitbit says the Ace’s data collection processes are designed to be COPPA-compliant so all that data pertaining to your child remains safe. Managing this data doesn’t just mean protecting it from outsiders — it also means only giving kids see the info they need to see. They’ll be able to check step counts, sure, but they’ll never see calories burned or body fat percentages.

With childhood obesity and diabetes rates continuing to rise, Fitbit clearly believes it has a responsibility to help more than just parents get in shape. It’s not alone on that front — Garmin tried the same with its Vivofit Jr., a children’s wearable that arguably offers a more fun, thoughtful experience for the little ones actually wearing it. The Ace, meanwhile, doesn’t seem like much more than last year’s Fitbit given a child-friendly body. That’s obviously not necessarily a bad thing, but here’s hoping Fitbit uses its software know-how to craft some feature kids can get into before the Ace launches this Spring.
