That said, she loses points for using all those things in an overall plot to murder her own son.

To be fair, Landon’s mother eventually came around in Thursday’s midseason premiere, though it took some convincing for her to accept him as her offspring. In fact, it wasn’t until Alaric and Hope tracked them down in a seedy motel room that she finally opened up about her dark past.

Here’s the gist: After serving in the military, Seylah landed a gig with an intelligence organization responsible for keeping the supernatural world a secret. When a creature threatened to expose that world to outsiders, she would track it down and bring it to headquarters. Think Men in Black, complete with Seylah having her memory wiped after each mission. When she discovered that the reason she forgot the creatures was because the organization was sending them to Malivore, she was tossed into the pit as well, only for her to suddenly reappear two years later… inexplicably pregnant!

Naturally, Seylah took off immediately after telling all of this to Alaric, leaving the gang with a heck of a mess to clean up. Not only did Landon apparently steal the second Malivore key from Seylah’s house — which, like the knife, he doesn’t remember taking — but a freaky fish creature (quite possibly a “very pissed merman”) climbed out of the bathtub and tried to kill everybody.

Legacies RecapHope had the brilliant idea of putting her Landon tracker in the key/urn, handing it over to the creature, then letting it take them straight to Malivore, where she believed Seylah was going. The fish monster led them to a complex owned by Triad Industries, though it only made it halfway across the lawn before being blown to little fishy bits. Meanwhile, Seylah strong-armed her way into the facility, where she sacrificed herself by diving into Malivore and erasing her existence from the world.

Well, from most of the world, anyway. For some reason, Hope remembered everything that transpired over the past few days. And while she’s willing to keep it from Landon until he’s ready for the truth, she had to tell Alaric everything — including that the urn has been brought back to the Salvatore School, and (uh-oh!) it’s starting to glow.

Also worth discussing this week…

* If you weren’t already sold on Hope and Landon as a couple, I have to imagine you’re ‘shipping them to the fullest after this week’s episode. They’re easily the two most damaged and emotionally guarded characters on the show, so when they open up to one another and get honest about their feelings… ugh, it’s just the best. They can also be very cute when they want to be, like when Hope asked him to be her boyfriend at the end of the hour.

* OK, so the guy who posed as one of the fake gas company employees is a high-up (if not the highest-up) at Triad Industries. But what’s his deal? And what’s his name? And is he Landon’s father? (I might have gone too far with that last question.)

* I couldn’t help but laugh when Hope told Landon, “My first kiss was with a 90-year-old vampire who helped murder my mother.” #JusticeForHayley

The Puerto Rican government plans to cancel its contract with Whitefish Energy, Governor Ricardo Rosselló said during a press conference on Sunday morning.

“We’re invoking that cancellation clause… There’s some work that needs to be finished but I am invoking that cancellation clause.”

He said the exact timing of the termination of the contract would be up to the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) but he expected the contract to be terminated after “immediate work” is completed.

“I have petitioned the board of PREPA to invoke the cancellation clause so that after the current immediate work that is being done is finished, that contract is no longer available,” he said.

The $ 300 million contract awarded to the small Montana company has been under scrutiny from Congress and FEMA because of its ties to the Trump administration.

Questions have been raised about the company’s possible ties to Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, who is from the same Montana town the company is based in. Zinke may have links to Whitefish Energy CEO Andy Techmanski, and Trump campaign donor Joe Colonnetta is also the head of one of Whitefish Energy’s major funding backers, The Daily Beast reported.

The process of procuring contracts in the aftermath of the disaster is also under scrutiny after weather.com reported that there was no competitive bidding process. PREPA also bypassed the usual mechanism involving the larger, more experienced American Public Power Association, which helped bring in workers from public utility companies across the U.S. after Hurricanes Harvey and Irma this year.

On Friday, energy regulators launched a probe by the Puerto Rico Energy Commission, a broad investigation into the handling of energy contracts in Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. The House Committee on Natural Resources is also investigating the Whitefish contract specifically.

“It’s interfering with everything and it doesn’t go towards the best interests of the people of Puerto Rico,” Rosselló said of the contract on Sunday.

The governor said he is asking PREPA to put in place a trustee in charge of overseeing contract procurements, and that Puerto Rico’s Comptroller will investigate the procurement of contracts under emergency conditions, which fast-track the process.

He said the Puerto Rican government will seek mutual aid from New York and Florida energy authorities to help repair the island’s power grid.

OK, so there were actually lots of unofficial mysteries surrounding the blockbuster trilogy.

Like, was Keanu Reeves acting like that on purpose or just having a laugh? Or, did the script actually make one single tiny iota of sense? Or even, why did the films get so dramatically worse as they went along?

However, one proper official mystery has always surrounded the Matrix code.

Remember all those green symbols running down the screen? The man who created them has finally explained what they mean and the answer is more mind-blowing than the idea that the (undeniably talented) Wachowski’s will ever make an entirely coherent film (or TV series). 

It will take more than a blue and red pill to make sense of most of it but British production designer Simon White just cooked up an incredible revelation.

He has worked on the Harry Potter movies and is currently helping craft The Lego Ninjago Movie but in a chat with CNET he dropped the biggest bombshell when he spilled the secret behind that Matrix code.

It is seriously inspired by his Japanese wife’s love of cooking – and by sushi, in particular.

Well, this is the Matrix, what did you expect?

The movies may have broken new ground with the incedible visuals and ground-breaking fight sequences, but the entire pseudo-spiritual mumbo-jumbo behind it all was hard to swallow.

Unlike sushi, which always goes down a treat and is the brilliant inspiration behind the code. 

White explained: “I like to tell everybody that The Matrix’s code is made out of Japanese sushi recipes. Without that code, there is no Matrix.”

Of course, being the Matrix, it’s possible that nothing is as it appears and the cheeky chap is having some fun at fans’ expense.

However, sushi recipes seem far more profound and satsfying than a typical comment from the Architect like: “Some of my answers you will understand, and some of them you will not. Concordantly, while your first question may be the most pertinent, you may or may not realize it is also the most irrelevant.”

We’ll take six tuna maki rolls, six shrimp nigiri and some salmon sashimi, please, Neo…

Michael Phelps is the fastest swimmer in the world. It would be a shame if something just turned up, out of the blue, to challenge his supremacy.

Discovery Channel’s annual Shark Week is finally here and the long-awaited race between the American Olympic champion and a great white shark was upon us on Sunday night. While the outcome seemed obvious, the intrigue was still there.

After 45 minutes of science, suspense, and very believable graphics…

…the end result was rather anticlimactic.

Fans were hoping to catch a glimpse of Phelps racing alongside a real shark but the constant use of holograms had some fans smelling something fishy. Turns out it was all just a simulation.

Nevertheless, after putting on a special wet suit and a high-tech fin, it was “race time” for Phelps. And he won!

Nah, we’re just pulling your leg. He lost by two seconds.

The great white’s killer speed was just too much for the most decorated Olympian of all time.

And while most of the Internet was up in arms over Phelps not actually racing a live shark, we at least came away from the experience with a glorious new gif.
