The culture is fatalistic. This is not to deny the existence of ambition; there’s always the shipbuilding entrepreneur or fisherman who sends his children to an expensive school in Tulear. But focusing too much on the future implies an ability to change one’s circumstances by altering the natural course of events. The Vezo, after centuries of following nature’s ebb and flow, see such an attitude as arrogance. “Many still migrate,” Veloko tells me of his friends. “Most of the net fishermen have already left with their families heading north. We will move on too, when the sea stops giving here”.

The wind changes and we seize the chance to make it back before nightfall. The crew’s tuneless, heavily accented rendition of a pop song accompanies our return to the mainland. As we near Belo sur Mer, we catch sight of other lakanas, on the same wind, making for the natural harbor. On the beach, the wives wait. Their husbands do not always return. As the canoes are forced into ever deeper water in search of a catch, more boats are lost forever.

Getting a clear response from a nomadic culture, it turns out, is beyond my abilities. The Vezo society, I gather, is built around a response to the rhythms of nature; moving with the fish. They invest only in the essentials of their livelihoods—boat and equipment. They eat from that day’s catch, trading for other essential foodstuffs, such as rice. They celebrate with any money left over. Denis recalls when a huge haul of sea cucumbers had earned them AR 1,500,000 ($ 450) a few months ago. The crew bought a new sail and mast, then went drinking. They woke up, two days later, with empty pockets and returned to sea.

They got their viral video, but maybe these Russian fishermen should have moved away a bit faster.

“A whirlwind. A Twister. 500 meters from us. Very beautiful. It’s huge,” said Pavel Chernyavsky, as he narrates his Instagram video, geolocated off the coast of Gelendzhik in the Black Sea.

“Maybe it will catch up with us,” he joked in the next sentence, though the slightest note of genuine concern could be heard in his voice. He then points to a second twister, noting that the other column of wind-spun water is black, not white like the first one.

So a video of beautiful natural phenomenon just on the edge of danger was uploaded, and it was immediately picked up by the local media.

But the story didn’t end there – whether it was because people who think they are about to die don’t always film themselves, or perhaps the language behind the camera was not suitable for public display.

In a video on his account posted a day later, on Tuesday, Chernyavsky stands on the outside of his moored ship, which is scratched and covered in black marks.

“I want to show you the end result of the tornado,” he said to the camera, with a smile, but evidently still a little shaken. “As the storm broke out, we tried to tether ourselves to a larger ship, but the ropes broke apart, and we had to unmoor from them and we collided.”

“It was a miracle that we survived.”

  • Being a crab fishermen on Alaska’s Bering Sea is a very dangerous job with back-breaking labor and 20-hour work days.
  • In 2002, photographer Corey Arnold decided to give it a try. He ended up doing it for nearly a decade and brought his camera along for the many weeks at sea.
  • The Bering Sea is constantly suffering storms which make the work even more difficult and dangerous.

In 2002, photographer Corey Arnold left behind a poor economy in San Francisco and headed up to Alaska to try his luck at his longtime passion of fishing.

Arnold, who had worked summers during college on a salmon boat in Alaska, signed on to the f/v Rollo, a crabbing boat that fishes in the dangerous Bering Sea.

While working long, strenuous hours on the Rollo, Arnold often stole away with the captain’s permission to grab his camera and photograph the crew and the ship. Arnold eventually put together “Fish Work: Bering Sea,” a documentation of his seven adventurous and dicey crab seasons aboard the Rollo.

Arnold shared a selection of the photos with us here, and you can check out the rest in the book or on his website.

There are two annual crabbing seasons in the Bering Sea, King crab and Opilio crab. During each one- to two-month season, Arnold went on numerous trips crabbing. He went on one or two trips during King season, and three to five during Opilio season.

The Bering Sea, located between far east Russia and Alaska, has a unique interaction of strong currents, sea ice, and powerful weather patterns. It is one of the most dangerous places to fish in the world. Arnold calls the sea “a continuous storm.”

The 107-foot f/v Rollo is equipped to handle tumultuous seas. Average seas in the Bering Sea have around 10- to 20-foot waves, but Arnold has witnessed massive 50-foot waves and the Rollo’s captain, Eric Nyhammer, has witnessed 80-foot waves. Arnold rarely saw his captain get nervous, but when he does, the crew knows it’s time to worry.

A video has emerged showing a boat crashing into a smaller fishing vessel – and the people onboard having to jump off to save their lives. 

Footage, reportedly shot on action cameras called GoPros, has surfaced online. 

The trio fishing can be seen casting lines into the water and laughing with one another as the other boat appears on the horizon. 

Coming at some speed, the other boat catches the attention of one man who stands on the lip of the boat and waves his arms. 

He shouts and waves his arms trying to get the attention of whoever is at the helm of the other ship. 

Despite his efforts, the other boat doesn’t seem to see the smaller fishing vessel. 

The other members of the fishing crew start to panic and one grabs onto the other for reassurance. 

All three jump out of the boat before the fast-moving ship makes contact. 

Cameras on the fishing boat show the crash as it happens – thankfully all three members of the fishing group jump overboard and save their lives. 

The crash was reported in the local news. 

The Oregon Live paper has reported one of the men in the fishing boat was an off-duty police officer. 

There has been a law suit filed against the man driving the larger motorboat. The case is still ongoing.

 TOKYO (Reuters) – Police in northern Japan have found eight men near a boat at a seaside marina who said they were from North Korea, and appear to be fishermen whose vessel ran into trouble, rather than defectors, a police official said on Friday.

The incident comes at a time of rising tension over North Korea’s nuclear arms and missile programs after President Donald Trump re designated the isolated nation a state sponsor of terrorism, allowing the United States to levy further sanctions.

Japanese police took the men into custody after a resident of Yurihonjo, a city in the prefecture of Akita, told police of the presence of individuals of unknown nationality, the official, Yoshinobu Ito, told Reuters.

The men, who said they were North Koreans, appear to be fishermen whose wooden boat, found nearby, had trouble and went adrift, Ito said. Police and authorities were now dealing with the matter, he added.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, asked if the possibility the men were spies had been ruled out, told a news conference authorities were handling the matter carefully.

Japan is studying plans to cope with a possible influx of tens of thousands of North Korean evacuees should a military or other crisis break out on the peninsula, as well as how to weed out spies and terrorists among them, a domestic newspaper said.

Last week, the Japan Coast Guard rescued three North Korean men on a capsized boat in the Sea of Japan, off central Japan. The men said they were fishermen and were later sent home aboard a North Korean vessel. Twelve more crew went missing.

Last week a North Korean soldier dramatically defected to the South after being shot and wounded by his country’s military as he made his getaway across the border in the heavily guarded Demilitarized Zone between the two countries.

A group of 20 Chinese fisherman has been jailed for between one and three years for illegally fishing endangered species of shark in the protected waters off the Galapagos Islands.

“After the enormous indignation we felt, this will definitely compensate for the damage caused because a historic precedent has been set,” Galapagos National Park Director Walter Bustos told AFP.

Their ship, the Fu Yuan Yu Leng 999, was seized by Ecuadorean authorities earlier in August when they discovered the illegally-obtained cargo of 6,600 sharks, many of which were near-extinct or endangered species reports Reuters.

“China will not side with any form of illegal fishing,” foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said of the verdict at a news briefing as cited by Xinhua. She added China will also investigate the incident to punish all violations according to international and Chinese law.

The cargo totaled over 3,000 tonnes and included protected species such as the hammerhead and the bigeye thresher sharks, reports AFP.

The men were sentenced Sunday and were also hit with fines totalling $ 5.9 million. The senior ranking officers were sentenced to three years in prison while the remaining crew each received one year in prison, according to AFP.

The Galapagos islands are located roughly 1,000 km (620 miles) west of Ecuador’s Pacific coast and were declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1978.

The remains of the sharks will be thrown back into the sea, reports Reuters citing government sources.

Fishbrain CEO Johan Attby came up with the idea in 2011, after he sold his first Silicon Valley startup in 2011. “I though, you can slide social networks in a different direction,” he told Digital Trends. “In general, networks like Facebook and Instagram are sharing platforms — they’re super broad. And when you’re posting about your passion, it’s irrelevant to many of your friends.”

With the spark of an idea in mind, Attby began researching the world’s most popular hobbies. One of the largest by spending, he discovered, was fishing. Fishmen — anglers, as they’re colloquially known — catch as many as 60 million fish each year. It’s an industry is worth a collective $ 48 billion — more than double that of the $ 18 billion streaming music industry, Attby pointed out

And it’s almost tailor-made for social media. Anglers like to share pictures of their catches with others, Attby said, because few keep the fish. “They always take a picture, and we provide a place to share it.” Fishbrain users can tap built-in publishing tools to share their proudest moments. A new feature launching today will allow Fishbrain users to post and share videos, which they can tag to the location of their catch.

It’s all about personalization. When you sign up for a Fishbrain, you’re asked to specify your favorite species of fish and your preferred method of fishing (e.g., fly fishing), among other specifics. Then, Fishbrain’s algorithms recommended content that matches your criteria — sort of like Facebook’s News Feed. “We try to present the most valuable content to you,” Attby told us. “Same with videos: We try to serve you the most relevant videos. If you specify that you like fly fishing, videos tagged with ‘fly fishing’ will be most likely to appear in your feed.”

Fishbrain offers another, more intimate level of personalization. When you sign up, you’ll be automatically added to a group: Fishbrain Counties, or chat rooms tied to geographic locations. Group members can share real-catch data, track species, and see what others are catching. “You’ll see if there’s a group that wants to go fishing, and learn about the best lakes,” said Attby. “You can subscribe to as many counties as you’d like.”

Lastly, there’s the predictive element. Anglers are eager to get a lay of unfamiliar land, Attby said, and that’s where Fishbrain’s data points come in. The social network tags every catch logged by its millions of users with data like species, weight, lure, and 15 different weather parameters. Then, it applies machine learning to that data in order to provide what Atterby calls a Fish Forecast: A graph that shows peak fishing times for specific streams, beaches, and other prime locations. “That’s the beauty of going after a [niche] — you can build a specific design or user experience around it,” said Attby.

Fishbrain

It appears to be a winning strategy. Fishbrain’s membership now numbers north of 3 million, and the network’s users have logged more than 1.9 million catches across 249 counties. They logged 1.1 million last year alone — three times the previous year.

“Our users are eager to show off their entire fishing experience — not just the catch at the end,” Attby said. “Thousands of anglers share their fishing videos [and] pictures on Facebook and YouTube, and now that they can share [them] within a social community devoted specifically to fishing, we know it will spur along conversation as well as a competitive spirit within the Fishbrain community.”
