Sam Mendes may be best known for his Oscar-winning picture American Beauty. But the director has also worked on two Bond films and The Road to Perdition. Now Mendes is refocussing his directing talent on the past with 1917, a movie about World War One.

When is 1917 out in cinemas?

1917 has a US release date of December 25, 2019.

Fans in the UK will have to wait for the new year, with January 10, 2020, the film’s release date.

Germany and the Netherlands also have release dates scheduled for January 9 and January 16 respectively.

Rumour has it the movie will start shooting on April 1 across multiple locations in England.

What is the plot of 1917?

The plot details known so far are slim, but given the historical context, some intuitive guesses can be made.

What we do know is the film follows two young British soldiers on a single day during the height of World War One.

If this rings familiar, you’re not alone – Dunkirk likewise took place over a concise period of time but focussed on World War Two.

As more details are released, an official plot synopsis will likely make its way online.

Who is in the cast of 1917?

The two soldiers had been previously announced as George MacKay (Captain Fantastic) and Dean-Charles Chapman (Game of Thrones).

1917 will also feature a Sherlock reunion, with Andrew Scott and Benedict Cumberbatch joining the cast.

Daniel Mays, Adrian Scarborough, Jamie Parker, Nabhaan Rizwan and Claire Duburcq are all playing undisclosed roles.

Colin Firth, Mark Strong and Richard Madden have all been announced today as part of the 1917 cast.

Is there a trailer for 1917?

No, we are still a long way away from a trailer as filming has yet to begin.

Mendes co-wrote the screenplay with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (Penny Dreadful).

With a star-studded cast, anticipation for the trailer is running high.

The Secret Garden will bloom once again. The Secret Garden remake is in the works, with Marc Munden (Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams) helming the “fantastical reimagining” of Frances Hodgson Burnett‘s classic children’s novel. And it already has the perfect, quintessentially British cast led by Colin Firth and Julie Walters.

Firth and Walters are set to star in The Secret Garden remake for Studiocanal and Heyday Films, according to Deadline. David Heyman, who is best known for steering the Harry Potter franchise, is producing.

But this won’t be The Secret Garden you recognize. Instead of being set in the Edwardian era in which it was first published, the script by Jack Thorne transports the story to 1947, on the eve of Partition of India and in the aftermath of World War II in Britain. This is an intriguing twist, since the beginning of the story sees Mary Lennox’s parents killed in a cholera epidemic, which leads to her being sent to live with her gloomy uncle Archibald Craven in the moors of Yorkshire, England. The Partition of India was marked by bloody and brutal riots in the aftermath of Britain relinquishing colonial rule and clumsily dividing the country into India and Pakistan. It’s a chaotic setting to kick off the story of a spoiled, wealthy girl who is suddenly thrust into the real world after the death of her parents, and will definitely make for a striking start to the movie. The 1993 feature film adaptation of The Secret Garden, which co-starred Maggie Smith in an BAFTA-nominated role, also upped the drama of Mary’s orphaning, killing her parents in an earthquake.

The Secret Garden begins principal photography Monday. In the announcement of the production start, Munden said:

“This is a fantastical reimagining of The Secret Garden. I can’t wait to explore it. It’s an opportunity to immerse ourselves in an uncanny and wondrous world, which will play to the imaginations of adults and children alike.”

After 10-year-old Mary (to be played by Genius star Dixie Egerickx) is sent to live with her brooding uncle in the isolated Misselthwaite Manor, she begins to discover the secrets that her family and the vast grounds are hiding, including a sickly cousin named Colin (Edan Hayhurst, Genius) and a wild, walled-off garden. “Together, the two damaged, slightly misfit children heal each other — partly through their exposure to a wondrous secret garden, lost in the grounds of Misselthwaite Manor,” according to Deadline.

Walters will play Mrs. Medlock, the strict head housekeeper at Misselthwaite, while Firth will bring back familiar brooding skills (I’m expecting Mr. Darcy levels!) to play Archibald Craven.

I’m excited for a new take on The Secret Garden. I grew up loving Hodgson Burnett’s book, fascinated by the unlikable protagonist Mary Lennox, and its kid-friendly approach to Gothic Romance. I even had a pop-up book that was tied with the release of the 1993 movie! This is a timeless story that has had many great adaptations — I also recommend the web series, The Misselthwaite Archives — and this new reimagining sounds like a bold new take on an age-old story.

Somewhere between James Bond and Austin Powers you will find Kingsman.  

Based on the comic book by Kick-Ass’s Mark Millar, the first film adaptation arrived back in 2014 and now its sequel is about to hit cinemas.

Heading across the pond to team up with their American counterparts, the Statesman, how do the Colin Firth and Taron Egerton sequel fare?

So far the Kingsman: The Golden Circle has received a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 68%, with a mixture of reactions from praises to slammings.

EMPIRE
As ultraviolent as the first film, and as ultrasmutty, The Golden Circle will leave the Kingsfans grinning, even if its characters have less growing to do this time around.

Hollywood Reporter
Considerable shrewdness is applied to the conception and execution of nearly every scene to make this old spy stuff feel fresh, which it mostly does.

ScreenRant
Kingsman: The Golden Circle doubles down on slick action and spy genre riffs, but adds enough fresh and fun elements to provide an exciting sequel.

IGN
Kingsman: The Golden Circle is as cheeky, cartoonish, and crazy as its predecessor, but it’s also commendably unafraid to demolish what had come before it if it’s in service of the story.

However, the film wasn’t for everyone…

So now that you’ve seen these screencaps (from a previously released trailer), you know a bit of what you can anticipate come mid-Summer, which is when the streaming service Shudder — which just picked up Kuso — will make it available. As Pitchfork reports, it’ll be up on Shudder and available to purchase on iTunes and Amazon on July 21. If you live in NYC or LA, you’ll also be able to see it in theaters starting that day. (Though given just how tumescent cyst-heavy this all looks, perhaps the small screen might be a healthier viewing option.)

FlyLo has been tweeting about the news, and is seemingly very thrilled about the niche streaming home for his also-niche film:

When someone said that Netflix should have picked up his film at Sundance, he replied:

Beyond mesmerically/sickeningly animated body horror, the movie boasts performances from Hannibal Burress, Iesha Coston, Oumi Zoumi, Tim Heidecker (as seen above), Anders Holm, someone called “The Buttress,” Zack Fox (also pictured, covered in goo, above), George Clinton, and more. Its soundtrack includes work from Aphex Twin, Kamasi Washington, Thundercat, The Buttress (more Buttress!), and Flying Lotus himself.

The Verge reported on the film from Sundance, with writer Chris Plainte calling it “the grossest movie ever made.” He summarized it as “a collection of semi-connected short films chronicling the lives of the mutated women, men, and children of Los Angeles, following the earthquake to end all earthquakes,” then continued: “The sliced eyeball in Un Chien Andalou, the copious shit in River of Fundament, the corporeal mutilation of the entire torture-porn genre: it’s all an amuse-bouche for the final course that is Kuso.” Apparently, there is a character whose neck-boil (or pustule/cyst/whatever else I may have already referred to them as) talks, and that talking boil also is the recipient of…sex. Following the sex, “the boil keeps talking, even though its mouth is full of semen,” Plainte clarifies.

Consequence of Sound was pretty into the movie, saying “those willing to let Ellison walk them through his 93-minute nightmare will find something challenging, revolting, and eminently watchable.” Dennis Harvey at Variety was less wooed, noting how it’d led to walkouts at Sundance and equating it to “pretty much exactly like 90 minutes of a toddler sticking its stained finger in your face while giggling, ‘Looka my poopie!’”

Returning to our screens as Red Nose Day Actually, Richard has managed to pull in most of the cast including Hugh Grant, Martine McCutcheon, Kiera Knightly, Andrew Lincoln, and Bill Nighy.

The 60-year-old film director feared that 56-year-old Colin was “too grand” to reprise his cherished role now that he won an Oscar for the 2010 film The King’s Speech.

Richard said: “Is Colin Firth too grand now he’s won an Oscar? Can we find another house that looks like Downing Street? Can Hugh Grant still dance?

“Can we get any of the cast in the country at the same time? Is Liam Neeson making Taken 4? Is Lucia Moniz in Portugal?”

Revealing the reason behind the revival, Richard said: “At this particular time when things feel strained and complicated, it felt like an opportunity to think again whether love still is actually all around us.”

Following the death of Alan Rickman last year, Richard admitted that it was “strange and sad” that the actor wouldn’t be reuniting with them all on set.

“It’s obviously very strange and sad that Alan Rickman can’t be with us, and that means Emma Thompson won’t be in it, either,” Richard continued.

“Liam Neeson impressively kept the coat that we first filmed him in, and is wearing it again. Rowan Atkinson is still wrapping things very lavishly.”

The director also revealed humorous on-set stories from when the youthful stars were just at the start of their film careers.

“I remember Keira Knightley saying that her next project was ‘some pirate thing – probably a disaster’,” laughed Richard. “That turned out to be Pirates of the Caribbean.”

It comes after Richard’s scriptwriter wife Emma Freud posted a snap of Hugh accompanied by Martine on the set of the charity revival, revealing a major storyline.

“Our pm is still married. And she’s still lovely. #rednosedayactually,” said Freud, before adding: “The PM, his wife and the writer who never worked out a good camera face. #rednosedayactually,” accompanied by a picture of Richard.

Still together 14 years after the original film, the Prime Minister and love interest Natalie are still very much an item and could be right at the heart of the charity special’s plot.
