Enlarge / The first-generation Apple TV (credit: David Kidd)

A support document from Apple drives another nail in the coffin for the original Apple TV, first introduced in 2007. On May 25, 2018, first-generation Apple TV devices will no longer be able to connect to the iTunes Store due to new security changes to be implemented by Apple. In addition to first-gen Apple TVs, any PCs running Windows XP or Windows Vista will also lose access to the most recent version of iTunes.

According to the document, the “obsolete” original Apple TV won’t be updated in the future to support access to the iTunes Store. After May 25, users will only be able to access iTunes on second-generation Apple TVs and newer streaming devices.

The same security changes affecting the first-gen Apple TV will also affect Windows XP and Vista machines. Users on such devices can still run previous versions of iTunes, so they should still be able to play their music library without problems.

Goodbye, Gelandewagen! Blasting through Mexico in the First-Gen Mercedes-Benz G-class https://briefnews.eu/goodbye-gelandewagen-blasting-through-mexico-in-the-first-gen-mercedes-benz-g-class/ https://briefnews.eu/goodbye-gelandewagen-blasting-through-mexico-in-the-first-gen-mercedes-benz-g-class/#respond Thu, 04 Jan 2018 08:32:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/goodbye-gelandewagen-blasting-through-mexico-in-the-first-gen-mercedes-benz-g-class/ Mercedes-Benz G-500

–

Our cluster of high-powered SUVs tore away from Mexico City headed southeast, flanked by a chase car carrying armed personnel, just in case. An hour down the road, we stopped to change license plates. The limited-access freeway gave way to a two-lane road, but the needle of the speedometer remained close to 200 km/h, the equivalent of 124 mph. We had an excuse not to waste any time: That evening, Mercedes-Benz was unveiling a hybrid version of its GLE in Oaxaca de Juárez, almost exactly 300 miles away from the capital. Reason enough to make haste, especially since the police appeared to be utterly unfazed by our elevated pace.

–

The GLE hybrid represents the future, but we opted for heritage in the form of the classic G-wagen, which made its final official appearance as a new car at this driving event. Since its launch in 1979, the G-wagen had been updated with great caution; in 1990, the W460 became the W461, and the W463 was added as a more luxurious version. Later this month, at the 2018 Detroit auto show, the next generation will be launched. It will feature styling greatly similar to that of the current model but will be about four inches wider. The underpinnings are new, though, and the leap will be greater than ever before, even though the new model disingenuously retains the W463 code.

–

We choose the G550 for the trip down to Oaxaca; for the drive back, we lined up a G550 4×4², the more intensely off-road-worthy model with portal axles and Unimog-like ground clearance. The last few units of that particular monster are being made as this is written, but you can’t order it anymore. It doesn’t take the radical G550 4×4² to appreciate why the G-wagen continues to fascinate like few other cars. The lofty seating position, the upright windshield, the clack of its heavy doors: all of this has remained untouched since 1979. The cockpit, however, is an assembly of parts lifted from various bins over the past few decades. And it is clad in leather, countering the frugal character of this cabin and adding up to a somewhat confused style.

–

The powertrain has evolved as well. Early on, the remarkable thirst of the G-wagen, whether diesel or gasoline, stood in marked contrast to its leisurely nature. Current G-wagens are as thirsty as ever, but at least they serve up impressive performance. The G550’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8, originally developed by AMG, makes a whopping 416 horsepower that pushes it to an impressive (and electronically limited) 130 mph and, in C/D testing, hurled the big brick to 60 mph in just 5.7 seconds.

–

Mercedes-Benz G-500 4X4

–

Even more impressive is the soundtrack. The V-8 fires up with a bellow, emits a dark growl at low rpm, and sounds ever more aggressive as the revs climb. Just don’t expect to squeeze much more than 12 or 13 mpg out of it—especially if you push it into triple-digit velocities on Mexican highways.

–

Of course, the G-wagen was originally designed for off-roading, and this means that its on-road capabilities are somewhat compromised. The vague on-center slop in the steering, supposedly advantageous when negotiating massive rocks and difficult terrain off-road, translates into less than stellar precision on the highway. And curves that can be negotiated by modern SUVs effortlessly will cause the G-wagen’s body to roll considerably.

–

Mercedes-Benz G-500 4X4

–

All of that character is amplified to an extreme in the G550 4×4²; this model is far taller, and while it is unbelievably good off-road, its on-road manners are further compromised by the extremely high center of gravity. It also gets more looks than the regular G-wagen, which doesn’t exactly blend into traffic seamlessly.

–

Scarily, the G550 4×4² can still manage to top 130 mph, but zero to 60 mph takes a slightly more leisurely 7.3 seconds. Fuel economy is EPA rated at 11 mpg in city and highway measures alike, but if you use the car at anywhere near its potential, prepare for single digits—as we found out on the drive back from Oaxaca to Mexico City. Most colleagues took the plane back, but we asked to do the drive.

–

–

Since we were without the heavily armed chase car to protect us, Daimler asked us to skip any lengthy photo shoots and just head back to the city, de pronto. All the same, our haste was tempered a bit by the sight of the needle on the fuel gauge plummeting toward E. Despite all of its shortcomings for daily use, the G-wagen remains one of the most fascinating off-roaders on the market. The G-wagen has taught us, yet again, a lesson in timeless style.

–

On the occasion of our first drive of the revised 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-class, we also were afforded the opportunity to drive an example of the first Mercedes to use that model designation, a W116 version, and the contrast was marked. A shiny, well-sorted car from the factory’s Classic Center in Stuttgart, the W116 our hosts rolled out was an 350SE from 1979, a car from late in the production run that in its home market stretched from 1972 until 1980. Looking dapper in understated dark-blue metallic with generous chrome accents and MB’s classic color-matched wheel covers, the 350SE also sported a matching dark-blue interior with houndstooth-checked cloth upholstery.

–

In many ways, the W116 represented a leap into the modern era, with pull-type exterior door handles, bucket seats bisected by a center console, the familiar gated floor shifter for the automatic transmission, power windows, and—most welcome on a blistering hot summer day—working factory air conditioning. The huge steering-wheel rim of wrinkly black vinyl was a Benz mainstay for years; its extra-large diameter was designed to provide the driver additional leverage should the power assist fail.

–

The 350SE indicates a 3.5-liter engine in this example, this being from the days when the model designation still related to engine displacement. Under the hood was a V-8, smooth-running although with a rather lazy idle—it spun so slowly that it seemed almost on the verge of stalling, yet it never did.

–

Mercedes W116

–

When stirred, however, the engine could get this stately sedan up and moving. The three-pointed star at the end of the hood would rise in response to a determined prod of the accelerator. Body roll is generous, but even after nearly four decades, the big Benz exudes a hewn-from-metal solidity that many of its contemporaries lacked. We would have driven it happily all the way to Bonn, perhaps to take a meeting with German chancellor Helmut Schmidt—were he still around.

–

–

The sensation of driving—or even that of being in a moving vehicle—is so much greater here than it is in today’s car. The latest S-class, its vast, pillowy cabin suffused with computer screens and colorful mood lighting, is nearly capable of driving itself. It feels as if the model is taking another historic turn, one in which autonomy and isolation rise to the forefront. The W116 S-class was all about making the best-driving luxury car; the new S-class seeks to be the best possible luxury conveyance for an era in which driving is perceived more as a chore than a joy.

Apple quietly extends first-gen Watch warranty to three years https://briefnews.eu/apple-quietly-extends-first-gen-watch-warranty-to-three-years/ https://briefnews.eu/apple-quietly-extends-first-gen-watch-warranty-to-three-years/#respond Tue, 11 Jul 2017 23:08:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/apple-quietly-extends-first-gen-watch-warranty-to-three-years/

The first-generation Apple Watch suffered from a few problems, including “ballooning batteries” that ended up displacing a few users’ screens. In response, Apple quietly extended service coverage on first-gen device battery issues for an extra year. Now, they’ve done it again in response to another issue: According to MacRumors, first-generation Apple Watch owners can receive a free repair if the back cover of their device separates from the watch.

First-generation Apple Watch owners who encounter this problem will have a total of three years of coverage from the date of purchase. If your Apple Watch has this issue, you can schedule an appointment at the Genius Bar or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Additionally, you can call Apple Support and mail the watch to an Apple Repair Center.

Take note, though: While Apple has circulated an internal memo on this topic, they haven’t made the policy public. There are some reports that Apple Watch owners were required to pay for their repairs, despite the warranty extension. If you encounter this problem, escalating your request until you find someone who’s aware of the policy should do the trick.

Apple adds one more year of warranty to first-gen Watches https://briefnews.eu/apple-adds-one-more-year-of-warranty-to-first-gen-watches/ https://briefnews.eu/apple-adds-one-more-year-of-warranty-to-first-gen-watches/#respond Sun, 30 Apr 2017 04:21:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/apple-adds-one-more-year-of-warranty-to-first-gen-watches/

Apple will still repair your first-gen Apple Watch if it breaks due to battery issues even if it’s already older than two years. The tech titan has extended its wearable’s repair coverage related to battery woes to last two years instead of one, according to a note Apple sent to authorized repair centers that 9to5mac got its hands on. If you include its first year with limited warranty, the device’s owners can enjoy three years of coverage, and it’s all thanks to a several reports complaining of batteries ballooning inside their timepieces.

Some posts on Reddit and on Apple’s discussion board talk about how their first-gen Watches’ batteries ballooned and displaced the screens like what happened in the image above. It doesn’t seem to be a huge issue, and we haven’t seen anyone claim that their device exploded or caught fire like Samsung’s Galaxy Notes did. Still, it’s definitely good to know Apple can help if anything happens to your smartwatch, especially if you bought it when it was first released in 2015.
