As Democratic megadonor Tom Steyer called for Donald Trump’s impeachment over his Russia summit in Helsinki, Republican strategist Karl Rove defended Trump by pointing to the president’s sanctions against oligarchs and criticizing Barack Obama. “The previous administration should have taken tough action against a foreign actor meddling in our elections,” Rove said. “I’m sure … that Putin was shaking in his boots,” he added sarcastically.

“Who gives a shit?” interrupted comedian Chelsea Handler, an author and activist. “Republicans constantly are bringing up what Obama didn’t do in comparison to what Trump did. Obama also didn’t kiss Putin’s ass in front of all of the American people.” As Rove added that Obama “stood by while [Russia] took Crimea,” Steyer finally interrupted: “Alright, Karl: Enough, enough.”

How in the world did three people so different get into a room together? Only at OZY Fest, during a heated hourlong panel moderated by OZY CEO and co-founder Carlos Watson that fired among topics like impeachment, gerrymandering, voter suppression and presidential ambitions.

The tensions began early, with Steyer saying that he got involved in national politics in the early 2000s after it became clear (to him) that George W. Bush — whom Rove served as chief strategist — was going to “set the country back 25 years.” After Steyer complained about the Citizens United decision, saying “corporations aren’t people” and that elections should be about “one person, one vote,” Rove got his vengeance — by pointing out that the environmentalist billionaire was one of the biggest Democratic donors in 2016 (spending $ 90 million, and recently spending $ 20 million more on ads advocating for Trump’s impeachment).

“Should Steyer be able to spend $ 40 million and I can only send $ 100,000?” Rove deadpanned. (Pointedly, Rove, who is tied to the super PAC American Crossroads, added that corporations don’t give money anyway, because “they’re scared to death of offending their customers.”) It’s a question Steyer, who is widely rumored to be preparing a presidential run, will likely face from “1 percent”-decrying Democrats as well in a primary that could include 20 or more candidates in 2020. “He’s running, he’s running,” Rove interrupted when Steyer said he hadn’t made a decision on his candidacy yet, with the conservative Texan getting under the liberal Californian’s skin once again: “He knows so much about me,” Steyer griped, when “he met me 45 minutes ago.”

Handler didn’t stay on the sidelines for long, saying Trump’s presidency was a “stain on American history,” colorfully calling it her “fantasy” to see “Donald Trump dragged out of the White House in his boxer shorts and landing in the Rose Garden.” The debate over whether to run to the left or to the center was wasted effort, she said, instead arguing that Democrats should find voters excited about a top concern — from LGBTQ to civil rights to marijuana legalization to abortion rights — and motivate them to head to the polls for that issue. “It’s about getting people activated. I’m not trying to convert Republicans,” said Handler, who has said she was taking 2018 off from showbiz to focus on electing women in the midterm elections.

Despite the fiery start, some areas of consensus formed. Both Rove and Steyer agreed that economic anxiety was a growing problem nationwide. “Let’s give the devil his due. Trump did react to the despondency around the country,” Steyer said, although he believes the president’s proposed solutions are wrong. And while Handler said Democrats should focus on expanding outreach to first-time voters, the other two agreed the parties have to convince swing voters with a positive vision for America. “Elections are won not by energizing and motivating the base but by persuading people who didn’t necessarily share your vision in the past election,” Rove said.

Kirsten Gillibrand talks Supreme Court

The New York senator hasn’t announced her candidacy for president, although she is widely rumored to be preparing a bid. Still, she made her mark on a key issue in the 2018 midterms — voicing sharp opposition to Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. “He will destroy women’s reproductive freedom,” she said bluntly, urging attendees to tweet at senators to sway their vote.

Gillibrand also answered questions about past views that she would likely face if she enters the Democratic primary for president. A Blue Dog Democrat who supported crackdowns on sanctuary cities when she entered the U.S. House more than a decade ago, she had a change of heart on immigration upon joining the Senate in 2009. “I did not have enough understanding of the issues that impact families all across this country and in New York. I was wrong.” She doubled down on her bid for progressive support, saying Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s surprising congressional primary victory this summer was “inspiring.” As OZY noted previously, Gillibrand became the first U.S. senator to adopt an “Abolish ICE” stance after the democratic socialist helped popularize the notion. “She really ran from her heart on issues she cares about,” Gillibrand said of Ocasio-Cortez.

Steyer rolls his sleeves up …

On the revelations that Trump lawyer Michael Cohen has audio tapes of Trump discussing hush payments to Playboy model Karen McDougal: “There is more evidence right now that this president has met the grounds for impeachment,” Steyer said. While OZY reported last year that Republicans believe such claims would drive conservative voters to the polls, Steyer rejected that notion. “That’s a red herring,” Steyer said. “We polled it and it doesn’t get Republicans to the polls — in fact, it gets Democrats.”

Rove believes the Trumps won’t be a family dynasty

The man knows dynasties, having shepherded Bush through his presidential campaigns. “They certainly sound like they want to, but whether or not they’ll be as successful as the old man is yet to be shown. If you are going to run for mayor or governor of New York, that’s hard enough — might be even harder if your last name is Trump,” Rove said in an interview. “The one who seems to be most energized is Don Jr. Ivanka might have a better shot, particularly if she finds the right spot.”

He also defended Kavanaugh, after reports showed the nominee had suggested a 1974 Supreme Court decision forcing Richard Nixon to turn over the Watergate tapes was wrongly decided. “He has a proper view of what the role of the judiciary is, which is not to become a lawmaking body,” Rove said, arguing that Kavanaugh was merely saying that an independent or special counsel (such as Robert Mueller) needed to be created by Congress.

Chain explosions rocked a fireworks factory, killing 24 in the city of Tultepec, which is renowned for its mesmerizing and dangerous pyrotechnic shows. Among the deceased were first responders who rushed to the scene.

The blasts struck the factory, which has been operating without a license, at 9:40 am on Thursday. As firefighters, police officers and members of the civil protection service arrived at the scene, the initial blast triggered a chain reaction, resulting in at least three more explosions.

At least 24 people, including a minor, have been confirmed dead amid fears that the death toll can still rise. Forty-nine people have been taken to hospitals suffering from severe burns and other injuries. Some heavily injured patients were airlifted to medical facilities.

Of the 24 victims, 17 died on the spot and a further seven were pronounced dead at the hospital.

Luis Felipe Puente, the head of Mexico’s civil defense agency, has blamed the tragedy on the mishandling of gunpowder, saying that the blasts tore up the clandestine facility that lacked government authorization.

The heavy death toll was due to people being caught in secondary explosions after they rushed to help those who were injured in the first place, Puente told the Milenio news network.

Firefighters, policemen and civil emergency workers fell victim to the blasts.

Outgoing Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto has extended his condolences to the relatives of the victims, wishing a swift recovery to those in hospital care.

It is estimated that some 30 percent of the city’s population, which prides itself as being Mexico’s pyrotechnics capital, depend on fireworks production to provide for themselves, with private workshops popping up uncontrollably.

The authorities are struggling to regulate the sprawling industry, and explosions that often lead to lethal outcomes have become a regular occurrence.

The Thursday explosion is the second deadliest of its kind in Tultepec, which is located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of the capital, Mexico City. At least 42 people were killed and dozens were injured after explosions struck an open-air fireworks market in December 2016.

Since the beginning of the year, 38 people have died in fireworks explosions in Tultepec and some 64 have been injured. The numbers represent a dramatic increase in comparison to the past year, when only nine people died in pyrotechnics-related incidents and 12 were injured, according to Milenio.

Every year, the city holds a weeklong festival to honor St. John of God, who local fireworks makers revere as their patron saint. The festival features fireworks competitions among producers.

Fans have been waiting for Tracy (played by Amy Walsh) to discover the truth about her cheating husband David (Matthew Wolfenden) ever since it was revealed that he slept with his ex Leyla (Roxy Shahidi) in Greece months ago.

Following the arrival of Tracy’s stalker Phil (Ryan Hayes) on Emmerdale his attempts to blackmail her set in motion a painful storyline for the shop-worker and her husband.

While viewers were desperate for Tracy to tell David where to go, their hopes finally materialised tonight as the pair had an emotional final conversation.

Now, actress Amy has revealed that there are going to be difficult times ahead for Tracy when Leyla returns to the village.

Speaking to OK! Online, she had no qualms in expressing her feelings about the character.

She said: “It’s a very hypocritical thing for Leyla to have done as well as morally – so wrong!

“Tracy confronted her quite a few times about her feelings for David.

“And once again, Tracy was made out to be the bad guy because she was making her leave the village.”

Amy went on to tease that Leyla shouldn’t be looking forward to a welcome parade when she comes home, and not even from her biological son Jacob (Joe-Warren Plant).

“I think she’s got a lot to answer for and a lot to make up for!” she added.

Viewers may have been expecting a showdown between former best friends Leyla and Priya Sharma (Fiona Wade).

When the former left, one of the major reasons was because Priya had done the unthinkable and slept with her fiancé at the time Pete Barton (Anthony Quinlan).

Judging by Amy’s comments, it could be that Priya and Leyla make up as they find common ground with each other in the most unexpected way.

During tonight’s heartbreaking scenes, Tracy firmly told her husband exactly why they couldn’t be together.

She sobbed: “You know the worst thing in all of this is that you let me think that I was the one who was dirty, that I somehow wasn’t good enough I had something to be ashamed of and that I wasn’t worthy of you.

“The truth is you were never worthy of me. Bye David.”

Emmerdale continues tomorrow at 7pm on ITV.

A parked car became a bizarre and unexpected centerpiece for New Year’s Eve revellers in Houston, Texas when a cache of fireworks exploded inside the vehicle.

The Dodge Charger was parked in front of the World Food Warehouse on the city’s Beechnut Street when streams of colorful fireworks began to shoot from the windows and trunk.

Footage filmed by eyewitness Jonathan Garza shows the incredible moment a stash of fireworks, presumably for the evening’s New Year celebrations, ignited.

In the video, people can be seen flocking to get a glimpse of the bizarre light show. At one point a man warns people to back off, fearing that the car’s fuel tank could explode.

“Oh my god, there’s actually a fire,” he shouts. “Hey, the fuel tank, the fuel tank.”

According to ABC 13, a stray firework landing in the car’s open trunk caused a chainreaction that set off around 600 fireworks that were being stored inside.

The owner of the fire-damaged vehicle, Hurara Hassan, described how his girlfriend had to flee the vehicle during the incident.

“I was scared because my girl was in the car,” he told ABC 13. “I ran to go see, but luckily she ran out.” There were no reports of any injuries following the fiery and bizarre incident.

As the rest of the world prepares to party like it’s 1999 to ring in 2018, the New Year’s festivities have already kicked off in style across Asia and Australia.

Melbourne, Australia made a valiant effort with its New Year’s Eve pyrotechnics, but it’s fair to say that Sydney still reigns supreme with its world-famous (and almost deafening) fireworks display.

Not one to be outdone by its Aussie rivals, Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour put on a spectacular show to parallel Sydney.

In the Russian city of Vladivostok, meanwhile, a humble but elegant celebration was held in the city center.  

In Seoul, the Lotte World Tower dazzled residents with its mesmerizing electronic light display before erupting into an explosion of color.

Meanwhile, in Jakarta, sparks of a different variety were flying, as up to 500 couples gathered for a mass wedding to celebrate the coming new year with love.

There are a number of different places around the United Kingdom you can see New Year’s Eve fireworks. 

This include the famous Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh to the Capital’s annual firework display at Victoria Embankment. 

Cardiff Civic Centre

Head to Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland for the main event from which to view the fireworks on New Year’s Eve, which is known as Calennig.

Live music will play from the stage in front of City Hall from 7:30pm while the firework finale will happen at midnight.

Edinburgh Hogmanay18

Hogmanay is a world famous New Year’s Eve celebration in Scotland. 

A street party will take place in the city centre – one of the world’s biggest outdoor parties – where you can watch the fireworks from Edinburgh Castle.

Albert Square, Manchester

Some 10,000 people are expected to attend Manchester’s New Year’s Eve celebration in Albert Square.

The countdown will start from 10:30pm on the night, culminating at midnight with the beginning of a new year. 

There will be a no alcohol rule at this event, to tie in with its family friendly ethos. 

Victoria Embankment, London

This is an annual spectacular fireworks display over the London Thames River, which can be seen for miles all around.

Tickets are now sold out for the London New Year’s Eve Fireworks 2018 on the Thames Riverside. 

If you haven’t managed to get tickets to the ticketed display area in Victoria Embankment, there are a number of alternative places to watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks in London. 

Nottingham Castle, Nottingham

There will be a party in the grounds of Nottingham Castle, followed by a fireworks display – and it’s free of charge to attend.

At this event there will be a limited capacity of 2,500 people so people will be allowed in on a first come, first served basis.
