US President Donald Trump is threatening $ 150 billion in tariffs on Chinese imports. Beijing officials met ambassadors from France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain and Italy last Thursday and Friday to propose a firewall against Trump’s protectionism, the news agency reports, citing various sources.

“The message was that we have to stand together against US protectionism in favor of free trade,” a European diplomat told Reuters. “China is showing confidence, but internally they appear quite concerned. They have apparently underestimated Trump’s resolve on trade,” the diplomat said, adding that Beijing is nervous that many of China’s trading partners could side with the US.

Besides imposing tariffs on Chinese goods, the Trump administration has also levied European countries with tariffs on steel and aluminum exports to America. Brussels has said that it will seek compensation from Washington through the World Trade Organization.

The US trade deficit with China stood at $ 375 billion in 2017. A lot of the imported goods are from American manufacturers, who send raw materials to China due to cheap labor. When the goods are shipped back to the US, they are considered imports in the trade balance.

Google has announced a new firewall feature that allows developers and administrators using App Engine to easily restrict access from specific traffic sources.

Google App Engine (GAE), a managed platform within the broader Google Cloud suite of services that compete with the likes of Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure, is a web framework and platform for developing and scaling apps hosted on Google’s cloud.

Whether during testing or for other reasons entirely, developers may wish to open up new apps to just a few specific groups of users or perhaps prevent certain regions from accessing them. It is already possible to restrict access based on IP address, but this requires implementing access controls within the code, and even then the requests are still allowed in the door, which not only consumes resources but can also cost companies money for traffic they don’t need or want. With the new Google App Engine firewall, launching today in beta, developers provide a set of rules through the App Engine Admin API, Google Cloud Console, or gcloud command-line tool and specify the IP addresses to block or allow. And that’s about it.

There is a default rule that allows all traffic to visit an app, but admins can update that rule to specify a range of permitted IP addresses from within the company’s own network or partner organizations, for example, or from a specific country.

Other use-cases for the App Engine firewall include being able to block malicious IP addresses and protecting an app from distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.

Developers can hit the Test IP tab in the Cloud Console to ensure that their rules are working as intended. Those visiting from a blocked IP address will see an HTTP 403 Forbidden response, and their attempt to visit the website or app won’t add to the load or count in terms of traffic.

It’s worth remembering that this new tool isn’t a finished product, so some care is advised. “App Engine firewall is in beta, so avoid using this functionality in production environments,” noted Google product manager Lorne Kligerman, in a blog post.

When you’re a bad guy breaking into a network, the first problem you need to solve is, of course, getting into the remote system and running your malware on it. But once you’re there, the next challenge is usually to make sure that your activity is as hard to detect as possible. Microsoft has detailed a neat technique used by a group in Southeast Asia that abuses legitimate management tools to evade firewalls and other endpoint-based network monitoring.

The group, which Microsoft has named PLATINUM, has developed a system for sending files—such as new payloads to run and new versions of their malware—to compromised machines. PLATINUM’s technique leverages Intel’s Active Management Technology (AMT) to do an end-run around the built-in Windows firewall. The AMT firmware runs at a low level, below the operating system, and it has access to not just the processor, but also the network interface.

The AMT needs this low-level access for some of the legitimate things it’s used for. It can, for example, power cycle systems, and it can serve as an IP-based KVM (keyboard/video/mouse) solution, enabling a remote user to send mouse and keyboard input to a machine and see what’s on its display. This, in turn, can be used for tasks such as remotely installing operating systems on bare machines. To do this, AMT not only needs to access the network interface, it also needs to simulate hardware, such as the mouse and keyboard, to provide input to the operating system.
