Enlarge / All five major versions of the Falcon 9 rocket, side by side. (credit: Trevor Mahlmann)
The Falcon 9 rocket has undergone four major revisions over the last eight years, culminating in the Block 5 rocket. The initial expendable version of the rocket (v1.0) could lift about 10.5 tons to low-Earth orbit. This was a nice, tidy rocket but hardly a superstar.
However, one of the defining features of SpaceX is the company’s ruthless devotion to innovation. And while it may be reasonable to criticize the company for moving too far too quickly and with not quite enough focus on the here and now—when the culture of innovation works, it works.
In just eight years, SpaceX has jumped from the first version of its rocket to the Block 5 rocket. This powerful rocket can lift nearly 23 tons to low-Earth orbit, having undergone hundreds of changes and upgrades since its initial flight. Theoretically, its first stage will be capable of 10 flights before requiring significant refurbishment. It is so capable that even company founder Elon Musk (the high minister of the culture of innovation at SpaceX) says it’s good enough. This is probably the last major revision of the Falcon 9.

President Donald Trump warned on Wednesday that US missiles are coming to strike Syria, despite Russia’s threats to shoot down incoming US missiles and even the platforms that fire them.
The US has struck Syria before, using cruise missiles from two US Navy guided-missile destroyers in the Mediterranean, but experts now say the US will have to go bigger to make an impact on Syria’s forces under Russian protection.
With no aircraft carriers currently in the region, a heavy Russian naval presence in the region, and only 2,000 or so US troops on the ground in Syria, it may seem like the US is outnumbered or outgunned.
In reality, the US has massive airpower in the region which far overpowers anything else nearby.
With the US Air Force presences in Qatar, Jordan, and Turkey, as well as forces on the ground, the US has a multitude of options for carrying out a strike in Syria, despite a heavy Russian presence and advanced missile defenses.
Take a look at the US’s firepower in the region:

Berkshire Hathaway has never had this much cash, so naturally people have wide-ranging ideas for how the Warren Buffett-led juggernaut might use it.
UBS, for one, thinks the company should make a splashy acquisition — one that could exceed a whopping $ 160 billion. The bank arrives at that figure by factoring in the record $ 109 billion cash Berkshire has on hand, and combining it with the company’s strong free cash flow.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

NBL: Chat from Wildcatsw camp.

BRISBANE guard Adam Gibson says the Bullets have the back-court firepower to shoot up the NBL ladder this summer.
Gibson, a 2012 Olympian and two-time NBL championship-winner, Shaun Bruce and young gun Matt Kenyon will be joined in the guard rotation by highly rated US imports Stephen Holt and Travis Trice for the 2017-18 campaign.
Bruce (ankle) will miss the entire pre-season but the talented and well-travelled trio of Gibson, Holt and Trice will be on deck for Brisbane’s opening practice game against Cairns in Rockhampton.

Gibson said Brisbane’s busy pre-season schedule was essential to get everybody on the same page.
“I think we cover all aspects that you need from your back-court. We’ve got a good mix there of guys who play multiple spots so we are looking forward to seeing how it unfolds for us,’’ Gibson said.
“Travis has got the speed, can create his own shot and can create for others and get into the key while Steve is a real streaky, hot shooter who is taller than people think so those guys will really add to the core of the squad that has come back.
“It’s important we get that game time together now. Training has been good but that is a controlled environment.
“A few of us know how the offence works from last year and we just have to bring the other guys up to speed in that game environment.
“It’s the best way you can find a way to help the team and be effective.’’

Bullets coach Andrej Lemanis has a number of options at his disposal. He could play Gibson, Trice and Holt at the same time and shift Holt to small forward or keep a high rotation of experienced, quality guards on the floor so there is no drop in intensity.
Gibson said the Bullets were well advanced in their pre-season preparation compared with last year when the club was reborn after eight years in the wilderness.
“We were a brand new group last year so we spent a lot of time learning about each other and the way the coaching staff wanted us to play. The core of the group has remained,’’ Gibson said.
“We’ve pretty much been training non-stop and the three new guys are good guys so they’ll find their way.
“These games are not important result-wise but they are important in terms of learning how to play together.
“It will be good to get some game fitness back too.’’

Not long ago, we learned that Star Wars: The Last Jedi‘s petulant villain Kylo Ren will have a new ride in the upcoming film in the form of a ship called the TIE Silencer. Today, we’ve learned about two more brand new vehicles that will appear in writer/director Rian Johnson‘s upcoming sequel – and they’ll both be utilized by The First Order. That’s bad news for our trusty band of galactic heroes. Take a look at these new Star Wars The Last Jedi vehicles below.
On today’s episode of The Star Wars Show, Lucasfilm’s officially-produced web series, the hosts announced two new vehicles that will appear in The Last Jedi. You can watch the full video below, but I’ll break down the relevant parts for you underneath:
Again, that is coming from an official source, so you can consider that information canonical. Let’s dive into everything we know about these new vehicles.
First up is the AT-M6 walker, which stands for “All-Terrain Megacaliber Six.” The Megacaliber Six name comes from the laser cannon of that designation that’s on its back. The hosts describe it as “way bigger than a standard AT-AT.” Sharp-eyed fans will know that we’ve actually seen these already in some footage from The Last Jedi: these are the what Finn and his team are flying toward on the new planet of Crait.
Back in April, we’d heard that these machines were called “First Order Assault Walkers” and that they were massive – much taller than traditional AT-ATs and maybe even double the width. Initial reports indicated that they would have reinforced legs (the better to protect against ropes from clever pilots who might weave underneath them), and the design was described as being similar to “pissed off gorillas.” That aligns with the host’s description of the vehicle’s “simian-like gait” – notice how this thing almost has feet when compared to the stiffer, straighter legs of the AT-AT.
Next up is the First Order Dreadnought, “a mandatory four-class warship” equipped with two huge orbital auto cannons underneath it for heavy battle situations.
And the image above isn’t joking when they say it’s “really big” – this thing 7,669.72 meters long. Compare that to the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer, which is only 1,600 meters long, and you’ll see that The First Order has gotten some much-needed upgrades. (And we still don’t know the specs of the rumored Mega Star Destroyer, which may be even bigger than that.) We better wish Finn, Poe, Rose, Rey, and the rest of our heroes good luck, because it sounds like they’ll need it.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15, 2017.

Senior Airman Julianne Showalter/US Air Force
The U.S. Air Force promised its next generation of the beloved AC-130 gunship would basically be the equivalent of a flying Howitzer. It appears the service is making good on its promise.
The Air Force Special Operations Command showed off one of its newly upgraded AC-130W Stinger II gunships during a special ceremony at Warner Robins Air Force Base in Georgia to thank engineers and mechanics, the War Zone reports. The particular AC-130W in question, Spectre 67, is one of the first outfitted with a massive 105mm cannon designed to bolster the gunship’s existing arsenal.
You can see AFSOC vice commander Maj. Gen. Eugene Haase show off the cannon around 0:54 in the video below, courtesy of the DoD:

In 2012, AFSOC announced its intent to field the 105mm cannon on the AC-130W, and while AFSOC has vacillated in recent years over the efficacy of the giant gun, former AFSOC chief Bradley Heithold personally pushed the 105 as an integral addition to the W and the AC-103J, the replacement for the branch’s existing fleet of AC-130H Spectres, AC-130W Stinger IIs, and AC-130U Spooky gunships.
“An AC-130 is a precision strike platform in itself,” Heithold explained in an interview with Breaking Defense. “It precisely delivers very low yield munitions with a 30 [mm gun] and a 105… and they’re very inexpensive to deliver.”
The addition of the 105mm cannon is a deadly supplement the aircraft’s existing 30mm Vulcan gun, guided AGM-176A Griffin missiles, and GBU-30 bombs, among other destructive goodies. “We’ve got a bomb truck with guns on it now,” Heithold told Air Force Times in 2015, dubbing the Ghostrider “the ultimate battle plane.”
Haase’s intro confirms that the “flying Howitzer” method of gunship design is here to stay. The War Zone provides some useful context on the benefits of the side-firing artillery shells compared to more expensive laser-guided ordnance:
Historically, the benefit of the side-firing gunship concept has been the aircraft’s ability to fire very precisely at specific points on the ground. With a gun, crews could shift their focus to new targets much faster than with missiles or bombs and lay down a much higher volume of fire, too. As it stands now, the AC-130W’s wing pylons can only carry eight SDBs or Hellfires, though crews can reload the aircraft’s Griffin missile launcher in flight. And cannon shells and artillery rounds are just cheaper than precision guided munitions. An 105mm high-explosive round costs approximately $ 400, while a Hellfire missile can cost up to $ 100,000, depending on the variant.
From the Vietnam War onward, well-trained gunship crews repeatedly demonstrated their ability to destroy relatively small enemy concentrations while leaving the surrounding areas untouched, even in densely packed urban areas. After its introduction on the AC-130E Pave Aegis gunship in 1972, the airborne 105mm howitzer proved itself to be both particularly deadly and accurate.
We’re still holding out for a laser plane, but the 105mm Howitzer is pretty damn impressive — and, if you’re a jihadi militant looking to start shit on the ground in Iraq or Afghanistan, pretty damn terrifying.

Defense Minister Tomomi Inada ordered the Izumo Maritime Self-Defense Force helicopter carrier to protect a US Navy supply ship, which is heading towards the Pacific to resupply the American armada sent by Donald Trump to keep North Korean nuclear ambitions at bay, sources told Kyodo news.
The Japanese helicopter carrier is set to depart Yokosuka port in Kanagawa Prefecture to Monday to escort the US Navy supply ship from waters off the Boso Peninsula, near Tokyo, to the area off Shikoku, one of the four main islands of Japan.
Japanese media reports that the US ship could be delivering supplies to the aircraft carrier – the USS Carl Vinson striking group, that is now conducting a joint exercise with South Korea’s navy in the Sea of Japan.
To ensure success of their escort mission, the Japanese seamen have been authorized the “minimum necessary use of weapons,” to deter any attacks amid North Korean threats to sink US ships, the Japan Times reports.
It has not been specified if this is a one-time mission and how many American ships Izumo will protect.

The US Navy strike group heading toward the Korean Peninsula entered the Sea of Japan last Saturday. Two Japanese destroyers, the Samidare and the Ashigara joined the USS Carl Vinson’s group to carry out “various tactical exercises.”
Tensions between North Korea and the US have been growing exponentially over the past few weeks, as the US has repeatedly pressed Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear and missile programs.
President Donald Trump sent the USS Carl Vinson into Korean waters as part of a “very powerful armada” in order to intimidate Pyongyang, which has continued to test new ballistic missiles, despite all the warnings, UN sanctions and international condemnation.
Last Monday, North Korea threaten to reduce a US strike force to a sea wreck in case of provocations.
“Our revolutionary forces are combat-ready to sink a US nuclear powered aircraft carrier with a single strike,” according to Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of the North’s ruling Workers’ Party.
Monday’s Izumo deployment will set a new milestone for the Japanese Navy which has not escorted any military vessels, outside of troop exercises, since the adoption of a pacifist constitution following Japan’s defeat in World War II.
In 2015, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the ruling Liberal Democratic Party passed legislation to allow the country’s military to participate in foreign conflicts, overturning its previous policy of fighting only in self-defense.
Since the Japanese constitution only allowed Japanese armed forces to act in self-defense, the legislation reinterpreted the relevant passages to allow the military to operate with overseas allies in “collective self-defense.”
