Firebirds star Gabi Simpson cops a stray elbow.

Greg DavisThe Courier-Mail

INSPIRATIONAL captain Gabi Simpson says there is a feeling of “loss’’ and “disappointment’’ in the Firebirds camp after they were eliminated from finals contention for the first time since 2012.

Collingwood’s unconvincing win over West Coast late on Saturday night ended any mathematical chance of the Firebirds squeezing into the Suncorp Super Netball top four.

Queensland made the last four ANZ Championship trans-Tasman deciders, winning the 2015 and 2016 titles to create netball history and stamp the Firebirds as one of the state’s great sporting dynasties.

But the rollercoaster 2017 campaign had more lows than highs with the new-look Firebirds claiming six wins and a draw in 13 outings with Friday’s Round 14 clash with archrival NSW Swifts in Sydney to wind up their season.

The impressive victory over finals-bound GWS on Friday night showed what Queensland is capable of at their best with Simpson the star of the show in the Firebirds’ first win over a top-four side this year.

Simpson is in her fifth season at the Firebirds and will miss the finals for the first time in her glittering top-level career.

She said the brutal reality that finals were now out of the question was sinking in.

“It’s an interesting feeling at the moment. We are definitely disappointed that we won’t be in finals,’’ Simpson said.

“Knowing there was a 1 per cent glimmer of hope that past couple of weeks has been quite nice but after the (Collingwood) game there was almost a feeling of loss.

“It’s tough but where we are sitting now has not been through a lack of effort.

“There’s been a lot of soul-searching and a lot of work individually and as a team.

“We’ve done everything we can but it’s still disappointing.’’

Simpson said the 56-53 win over the one-time league-leading Giants was encouraging for the Firebirds heading into 2018.

“The beauty of it is that everything we have worked on this year came together which is so rewarding and so exciting for the future,’’ the Diamonds wing defence said.

“It has been frustrating but the vibe in the group is really positive after the win which is so important going into next season.

“The hard work is coming to something now so hopefully we can start at that level and go on from there. We have the evidence that what we are doing is working.’’

WING attack Caitlyn Nevins says the Firebirds refuse to be intimidated by the daunting scenario to stay in the hunt for Suncorp Super Netball finals.

The Firebirds will take on league-leading GWS in Sydney tonight (FRI) with the Giants coming off a very impressive 56-52 win over the Melbourne Vixens in the top-of-the-table clash last weekend.

The Firebirds need to upset GWS, and hope West Coast produce a boilover win over Collingwood on Saturday to remain in the race for the top four for another week.

A Collingwood win in the second-last round of the regular season would end Queensland’s aspirations for 2017.

“We have great belief,’’ Nevins said.

“It’s all about winning and getting the two points then waiting to see what unfolds with the Magpies.

“We still have finals hopes. We are not giving up on that just yet.

“We know we have a really tough task ahead but we see it as an amazing challenge.’’

Nevins said it was impossible to not be impressed with how GWS dismantled the Vixens, who were on an eight-match winning streak.

“They were brilliant. It is probably their best game so far so we’ve got the Giants at their peak form but I feel like we’ve been building towards our best performance too,’’ she said.

Nevins said the 59-48 win over Adelaide last Saturday night had given the Firebirds plenty to build on.

“We had a lot of creative play at the attack end. We weren’t predictable and kept them guessing. In defence, the girls forced a lot of turnover ball so it was a complete team effort,’’ she said.

Meanwhile, Firebirds training squad member Tara Hinchliffe has been selected in the Australian under-21 side for the Netball World Youth Cup.

MELBOURNE Vixens have extended their remarkable Super Netball winning streak with a 66-55 win over the Queensland Firebirds.

It was Groundhog Day for the fumbling Firebirds as their finals hopes slipped further into the abyss at Hisense Arena.

The fifth-placed Queensland is still a slim mathematical chance of reaching the finals for a fifth-straight season but the way they are playing at the moment does not add up to a top four berth.

They need to win all three of their remaining matches and have Collingwood lose all three matches to the bottom three teams in the competition.

It’s not happening.

But it’s a completely different story for the Vixens who have now won eight matches in a row.

They were led by top defensive game from Jo Weston, who claimed MVP honours for the match, some gutsy midcourt work from Liz Watson and brilliant shooting of the spring-heeled Mwai Kumwenda.

Kumwenda topscored for the match with 43 from 47 at 91 per cent in partnership with Tegan Philip (23-27).

The Firebirds are simply making too many mistakes, too often.

They were again guilty of throwing away far too much ball to giftwrap possession to the Vixens.

“It’s very disappointing to get the loss and I guess that probably puts us a little bit further out of finals … it was keeping the ball in our hands that we really didn’t do very well,’’ Firebirds captain Gabi Simpson said.

“It’s always disappointing not to be in that top four, that’s for sure.’’

Vixens coach Simone McKinnis said the match had been a danger game for her team with the Firebirds fighting for their season and was pleased with the fight her team showed.

“That was hard work tonight, it really was, as it always is against the Firebirds. It was 11 in the end, but we had to work all the way through that one,’’ McKinnis said.

“It was a good (performance), I think there were still moments … there were some more little errors that we haven’t been making which gave ball back a little bit.

“I thought the girls worked really hard from the start, it’s just I didn’t think we converted the ball that we need to as well as we had in the past.

“I’m really happy to get that win because I know what Firebirds are capable of and I knew that their backs were against the wall. That’s always dangerous coming up against a side like that. We had to work extremely hard for it and we did, so I’m happy.’’

THE Firebirds stayed in the hunt for Suncorp Super Netball finals with a gritty 55-50 victory over West Coast at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.

Queensland temporarily jumped back into the top four with the win and will stay there for at least a week if GWS beat Collingwood in Sydney on Sunday.

The Firebirds play the Magpies in Tasmania next Sunday in what amounts to a double-points clash as the sides are locked in a battle for the last spot available in the top four with the Giants, Lightning and Vixens all but assured of finals action.

The Firebirds seized control early and maintained their advantage all the way through to halftime when they held a 30-23 buffer.

Queensland played with great energy and intensity and powered away to a 10-goal lead during the second term.

The home side went further ahead in the third term and held a 43-34 advantage at the last change.

FIZZER: Lightning shine after protest flop

West Coast showed some fight and closed the gap early in the fourth quarter but the Firebirds never looked seriously threatened and secured their fourth win of the 2017 campaign.

Romelda Aiken hit 38 goals from 43 attempts for the Firebirds while Gretel Tippett added 17 goals from 19 attempts.

Kaylia Stanton had 38 goals for the visitors while former Firebird Nat Medhurst hit 12 goals.

The Firebirds took the opportunity to honour ANZAC Day while the players in the second game of the double-header performed their protest against the Netball Australia board vote in the middle of the court.

Firebirds captain Gabi Simpson said the pre-match action achieved the desired result.

“I think it was just a fantastic way to unite all of the players. That’s what it achieved and it was fantastic. We just stood there united,’’ she said.

Simpson said the victory was set-up in the first three terms.

“The (first) three quarters were fantastic … you could feel the flow coming through the court and the connection in defence,’’ she said.

“We’ve been really working on that spark and we’ve really come together in the last two weeks.’’

THE Queensland Firebirds will welcome back superstar shooter Romelda Aiken for this Sunday’s Suncorp Super Netball derby against the Sunshine Coast.

But the reigning champions will be without the services of savvy South African centre Erin Burger for the sold-out showdown with the Lightning at USC Stadium.

Aiken missed the scrappy 49-39 win over Adelaide on Saturday night due to a minor knee injury but successfully completed a running session to allay any fears over her fitness.

Netball Queensland High Performance boss Richard McInnes said Aiken would be ready to go.

“Romelda will be fine. Absolutely. There was no structural damage so sitting her out was more preventive,’’ he said.

“Rather than putting her out there at 80 per cent and running the risk of inflaming it and making it worse, it was an opportunity to get it right with a couple of big games coming up.

“We have got the Lightning then the Giants coming up so we wanted to make sure she was fine for those.’’

Burger was originally going to miss two games due to family and business commitments back in South Africa.

The trip home was part of her contract with the Firebirds when she signed as a replacement for the injured Mahalia Cassidy.

She has a netball coaching business in South Africa and will be attending a wedding.

“We knew this was going to happen from day dot,’’ McInnes said.

“Erin has managed to juggle things so she only has to miss one game instead of the original two and she’ll be back before the Giants (on April 8 on the Gold Coast).’’

Meanwhile, the Lightning are set to be bolstered by the inclusion of centre Laura Langman for the return bout with the Firebirds after the teams fought out a draw in Round 1 at Boondall.

Langman travelled to Perth, warmed up and sat on the bench for the Sunshine Coast but was not used in the 66-49 win over the West Coast Fever on Friday night.

Langman dislocated her left index finger the week before and she was not risked as the Lightning bolted to a commanding 15-goal lead at halftime with shooters Caitlin Bassett (43/45) and Steph Wood (23/25) leading the rout.

The Firebirds were impressive against the Thunderbirds in the first half when they raced to a 30-18 lead but took the foot off the pedal after the main break.

QUEENSLAND captain Gabi Simpson described last night’s 66-50 flogging at the hands of the Melbourne Vixens at Boondall as one of the worst losses in recent Firebirds history.

But Simpson said the stunning Suncorp Super Netball result was the “kick up the bum’’ the Firebirds needed.

The fumbling and bumbling Firebirds committed a remarkable 35 turnovers to hand victory to the impressive Vixens on a platter.

The sides entered the first match of the double-header at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre with the same record – two wins, one draw and a loss.

But they looked poles apart in class as the Vixens jumped the Firebirds early and never took the foot off the pedal, leading by six goals at quarter-time, 10 goals at halftime and 19 goals at the last change.

They simply owned the flat Firebirds.

Simpson said Queensland could not handle the heat from Melbourne.

“It just wasn’t our best performance. There was a lot of errors. The Vixens were phenomenal in their pressure on every single ball and we just didn’t take that very well,’’ she said.

“Sometimes you just need to lose a couple and get a kick up the bum to really take a step in the right direction.

“There will be plenty of learnings from this…that was definitely one of the biggest losses I have had.

“You’ll see next week that we will come back stronger.’’

Firebirds coach Roselee Jencke was clearly displeased, benching internationals Gretel Tippett and Erin Burger during the error-riddled effort.

Mwai Kumwenda (41/43) and Tegan Philip (25/27) were dynamite at the attack end for the Vixens while Romelda Aiken (37/46) and Tippett (8/11) had forgettable outings in a badly beaten team.

The contest was over by three-quarter time when the Vixens blew the Firebirds off the court with 19 goals to 10 in the third term.

At one stage, Melbourne led by 20 goals to all but silence the normally rowdy Firebirds faithful as Queensland looked completely out of sorts.

The Vixens dominated the Firebirds in the first half and took a commanding 33-23 lead into the main break after Queensland got off to a sluggish start best typified by two consecutive airballs from Aiken in the early exchanges.

THE Firebirds are back.

And they are eyeing this Friday’s match-up with arch rival NSW Swifts to really stamp their authority on Suncorp Super Netball.

The Firebirds claimed their first win of the season with a dominant 60-47 victory over the West Coast Fever in Perth on Friday night after a draw and a loss in the opening two rounds.

Queensland held a commanding 34-18 lead at halftime before cruising home with star goal shooter Romelda Aiken hitting 44 goals from 53 attempts.

Firebirds captain Gabi Simpson said the purple powerhouse is slowly getting its groove back.

“It was a relief to get that monkey off our backs. Getting the win was really important for us, especially it being the first one,’’ she said.

“It was a big one for us to recognise when we are going into a lull and change our actions to stop it happening. We were able to do that well in the first half.’’

The Firebirds host the new-look Swifts at the Brisbane Convention Centre this Friday night and while NSW lost a host of its stars in the off-season, Simpson said the grand final rematch still stirred the Queensland side.

“We can gain a little bit of extra confidence from our win over Fever. We have improved every week and there’s still areas we can take to a whole new level against Swifts,’’ Simpson said.

South African centre Erin Burger made an eye-catching debut for the Firebirds with nine goal assists, 24 feeds, two intercepts and two deflections against the Fever.

“What a phenomenal lady to step off a flight from South Africa two days before and have one training session and play such a composed game with so much energy and to fit in so perfectly,’’ Simpson said.

The Sunshine Coast Lightning take on Adelaide in Adelaide on Sunday.

UPDATE: FIREBIRDS captain Gabi Simpson says the heart of the reigning champions can still never be questioned after they snatched a thrilling 56-all draw with the Sunshine Coast in the Suncorp Super Netball season opener at Boondall on Saturday night.

The Lightning appeared on track for a stunning upset victory in their first-ever match when they led by seven goals early in the fourth quarter.

But the Firebirds were not to be denied and stormed home to level the scores with four minutes left on the clock.

The teams were locked together at 55-all inside the last 60 seconds when Lightning star Caitlin Bassett (48 goals from 51 attempts) put the visitors in front.

The Firebirds patiently moved the ball up court before Romelda Aiken (40 goals from 52 attempts) equalised with just seven seconds remaining.

The spine-tingling result in front of 5973 spectators at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre instantly and emphatically breathes life and credibility into the new Queensland derby.

With Firebirds legends Laura Geitz (pregnant) and Clare McMeniman (retired) watching from the VIP section, the Firebirds were not about to surrender lightly.

“It’s the first game and the thing that we proved just then is that we have the heart that we’ve always had and that fight. That’s what we pride ourselves on,’’ Simpson said.

“It’s a starting point but you can’t buy the heart. You can learn everything else but you can’t learn that.’’

Lightning captain Geva Mentor never thought the visitors were safe from a Firebirds comeback and was proud that the Sunshine Coast was so competitive with the purple powerhouse.

“In the game of netball, you can’t be set on your laurels until that final whistle is gone …(but) we showed some really promising things we can take on to next week,’’ she said.

“It’s our first game. They are last year’s premiers. They are probably one of the most successful clubs that we’ve seen in Australian domestic history.

“For us to come out and show that grit and show where we are at is just fantastic for the girls.’’

The Firebirds had four survivors from last year’s title-winning side on court.

The post-Geitz/McMeniman era was always going to include some rough patches for the Firebirds who need to find a long-term and high-class answer at centre after the season-ending knee injury to Mahalia Cassidy further depleted the squad.

This is a new model compared to the relentless machine that claimed unprecedented back-to-back trans-Tasman titles in 2015-2016

But they still refuse to quit.

The Lightning powered to a 29-24 halftime lead after overcoming a nervous start.

The Firebirds raced to a 5-0 lead in the opening minutes with the Sunshine Coast guilty of committing a number of turnovers.

Gretel Tippett and Aiken were on fire from the opening pass but they went cold soon enough as the surging Lightning closed the gap and trailed by the solitary goal at quarter-time.

Rising Firebirds star Mahalia Cassidy’s season is over.

Greg Davis – @GregDavis_cmailThe Courier-Mail

THE Queensland Firebirds have been dealt a devastating blow on the eve of the Suncorp Super Netball season with starting centre Mahalia Cassidy ruled out for the year with a knee reconstruction.

Cassidy, 21, suffered the knee injury at training on Friday and scans on Saturday confirmed the Redcliffe product had ruptured her ACL.

Cassidy was a member of the triumphant Firebirds squad last year and was poised to emerge from the giant shadow of departed Diamonds playmaker Kim Ravaillion and establish herself as a star in her own right.

But the dreams of the Australian and Queensland junior representative mainstay have been shattered temporarily just as she was about to get her chance to shine.

The Firebirds will take on the Sunshine Coast Lightning in the season opener at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre this Saturday night forcing a late reshuffle of the Queensland line-up.

An emotional Cassidy was more focused on the healthy state of the team rather than herself.

“I’m just completely lost for words,’’ Cassidy said.

“I’m incredibly disappointed but the team are in such a great place for this season.

“We’re well prepared for any situation. Everyone will be ready to go and get that win in Round 1.’’

Firebirds coach Roselee Jencke is confident her team can cope with the last-minute injury shock but her primary concern was for Cassidy.

“It was devastating news for Mahalia. She’s been training so well and was ready to have a great season. It’s unfortunate timing for the team but far more unfortunate for her,’’ Jencke said.

“She had everything to look forward to having that starting position and being ready to make her mark on the competition.’’

Jencke said the Firebirds had no option but to march on into the season without one of their emerging stars who is central to the team’s future.

“I’m confident we’ll be able to find a way forward. We’ve been in difficult situations before. This is a strong and resilient group. This will only make the girls closer and they’ll do what has to be done,’’ she said.

Centre Kristen Oxenford from the second-tier Queensland Fusion is set to replace Cassidy.

Oxenford has been training with the Firebirds over summer and Jencke said she will get first crack at filling the void at starting centre.

“She’s been playing that role in our Fusion team. She understands the culture and she understands what our environment is like. She has been excellent at training and I’m confident that she can play her role with the support of everybody around her,’’ Jencke said.

Meanwhile, the Lightning completed their preparations for their historic first competition match with a 56-44 pre-season win over the Southern Steel at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

The Lightning also dispatched the New Zealand outfit on Friday night with a 75-44 victory.
