Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba are officially off-duty: Their Spectrum Originals cop drama L.A.’s Finest has been cancelled after two seasons, according to our sister site Deadline.

In the Bad Boys spinoff, Union reprises her role as Syd Barrett, who works as an LAPD detective alongside partner Nancy McKenna, played by Alba. The supporting cast includes Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights) and Duane Martin (Real Husbands of Hollywood) as fellow detectives Ben Walker and Ben Baines, aka “The Bens,” Ryan McPartlin (Chuck) as Nancy’s husband Patrick and Ernie Hudson (Grace and Frankie) as Syd’s ex-cop father Joseph.

L.A.’s Finest began life as an NBC pilot, but didn’t get picked up for the 2018-19 TV season. Spectrum Originals stepped in and ordered it to series, and it premiered in May 2019 as an exclusive for Spectrum subscribers. Spectrum renewed it for a second season the following month, but its planned return this June was delayed as protests against police violence spread across the country. Season 2 eventually debuted in September, with all 13 episodes premiering at once.

Fox also aired the series this fall as a replacement for programming delayed by the global coronavirus pandemic. It made its Fox debut last month, with Season 1 episodes currently airing Mondays at 8/7c.

TVLine’s Cable Scorecard has been updated to reflect the news. Will you miss seeing Syd and Nancy fight crime? Hit the comments and share your reaction to the cancellation.

L.A.’s Finest Premiere: Gabrielle Union’s Bad Boys Offshoot Gets New Life on Fox https://briefnews.eu/l-a-s-finest-premiere-gabrielle-unions-bad-boys-offshoot-gets-new-life-on-fox/ https://briefnews.eu/l-a-s-finest-premiere-gabrielle-unions-bad-boys-offshoot-gets-new-life-on-fox/#respond Tue, 22 Sep 2020 01:56:50 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/l-a-s-finest-premiere-gabrielle-unions-bad-boys-offshoot-gets-new-life-on-fox/ Depending on your familiarity with the Bad Boys franchise, combined with your understanding of the phrase “Spectrum Originals,” Monday’s premiere of L.A.’s Finest may not have been your first encounter with the unstoppable crime-fighting team of Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba.

Fox’s newest cop drama finds Union reprising the role of Sydney Burnett, a sexually fluid badass first introduced in 2003’s Bad Boys II. Whether on the streets or in the sheets, she always gets her man (or woman), though her “all sex, no strings” philosophy suggests serious commitment issues. The woman even has to-go coffee cups ready for her overnight guests to ensure they won’t linger in the morning.

(Speaking of Syd’s life behind closed doors, how can she possibly afford that ludicrous apartment? We’re willing to suspend our disbelief quite a bit for this show, but not when it comes to real estate.)

Syd is partnered with Nancy McKenna (Alba), a Skittles-popping sharpshooter with a picture-perfect home life, including a husband (Chuck‘s Ryan McPartlin) who was just named interim district attorney. Of course, McKenna is harboring a few secrets of her own, including a shady connection to the man Syd blames for a near-fatal attack she suffered while working for the Drug Enforcement Administration five years ago. (Dark backstory? Check!)

L.A.'s Finest Season 1 Episode 1The stakes don’t always feel super high — like when McKenna finds the time to nag Syd about missing book club in the middle of an active armed robbery — but Union and Alba’s chemistry is real. Whether giggling about dick pics or shooting cartel members in the head, they’re buddy cops through and through. Plus, they work with Matt Saracen, and that’s always a good thing.

If you enjoyed Monday’s explosive premiere, we’ve got good news for (some of) you: Two seasons of L.A.’s Finest have already been produced, and every episode is available to watch on-demand for Spectrum cable subscribers. Non-subscribers will just have to stick it out and watch weekly on Fox.

So, let’s talk about it: Did you enjoy your first ride-along with Syd and McKenna, or are you just about ready to tuck and roll? Vote in our polls below, then drop a comment with your full review.

L.A.'s Finest: Bad Boys Spinoff Gets May Premiere Date on Spectrum https://briefnews.eu/l-a-s-finest-bad-boys-spinoff-gets-may-premiere-date-on-spectrum/ https://briefnews.eu/l-a-s-finest-bad-boys-spinoff-gets-may-premiere-date-on-spectrum/#respond Thu, 07 Feb 2019 14:56:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/l-a-s-finest-bad-boys-spinoff-gets-may-premiere-date-on-spectrum/

L.A.’s Finest will report for duty this spring. Cable provider Spectrum has announced that the Bad Boys spinoff will launch ad-free on Monday, May 13 via Spectrum On Demand, beginning with the first three installments; subsequent episodes will be released weekly.

The logline for the 13-episode offshoot reads as follows:

The one-hour series follows Syd Burnett (Gabrielle Union), last seen in Miami taking down a drug cartel, who has seemingly left her complicated past behind to become an LAPD detective. Paired with a new partner, Nancy McKenna (Jessica Alba), a working mom with an equally complex history, Syd is forced to confront how her unapologetic lifestyle may be masking a greater personal secret. Taking on the most dangerous criminals in Los Angeles while skirting the rules, and speed limits, Syd and Nancy become a force to be reckoned with – on the streets, and in each other’s lives.

Rounding out the cast are Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights) as Ben Walker, Duane Martin (The New Edition Story) as Ben Baines, Ryan McPartlin (Chuck) as Patrick McKenna, Sophie Reynolds (Gamer’s Guide to Pretty Much Everything) as Isabel “Izzy” McKenna and Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters) as Joseph Vaughn.

Union and Alba serve as executive producers on L.A.’s Finest, alongside Bad Boys franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Additional EPs include Jonathan Littman (CSI), KristieAnne Reed (Lucifer), Brandon Margolis (The Blacklist), Brandon Sonnier (The Blacklist), Pam Veasey (CSI: NY), Doug Belgrad (Peter Rabbit), Jeff Gaspin (To Tell the Truth), Jeff Morrone (Atomic Blonde) and Anton Cropper (Suits), who also directed the pilot.

L.A.’s Finest marks the first original series for Spectrum. Additional upcoming projects include the anthology series Manhunt (previously on Discovery Channel) and street-racing drama Curfew.

TV Bits: ‘L.A.’s Finest’, ‘DuckTales’, ‘Fear the Walking Dead’, ‘Luke Cage’, ‘Pose’, ‘Finding Justice’ and More https://briefnews.eu/tv-bits-l-a-s-finest-ducktales-fear-the-walking-dead-luke-cage-pose-finding-justice/ https://briefnews.eu/tv-bits-l-a-s-finest-ducktales-fear-the-walking-dead-luke-cage-pose-finding-justice/#respond Mon, 16 Apr 2018 04:25:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tv-bits-l-a-s-finest-ducktales-fear-the-walking-dead-luke-cage-pose-finding-justice/ How Hard Can It Be

In this edition of TV bits:

  • That Bad Boys spin-off series now has a title
  • Lin-Manuel Miranda is about to make his DuckTales debut
  • Watch the first 3 minutes of the Fear the Walking Dead season premiere
  • Antonique Smith joins Luke Cage season 2
  • A trailer for FX’s Pose
  • Allison Pearson’s How Hard Can It Be? will be adapted for TV
  • BET Orders Finding Justice docuseries from Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia
  • Warren Ellis‘ Injection comic being adapted for TV

In case you forgot, NBC ordered a Bad Boys spin-off starring  Gabrielle Union early this year. Union reprises the role she played in Bad Boys II – the sister of Martin Lawrence’s character. Jessica Alba also stars. Now, the show has an official title: L.A.’s Finest. As Deadline reports, “The project follows the Special Agent Syd Burnett character played by Union in 2003’s Bad Boys II movie as she moves to Los Angeles and joins the LAPD,” adding that Union’s “free-spirited former DEA agent Burnett has a fresh start in her new job as an LAPD detective. She’s partnered with Nancy McKenna (Alba), a working mom who can’t help but look at Syd’s freedom with some grass-is-greener envy. These two have totally different lifestyles and approaches, but they both are at the top of their fields in this action-packed, character-driven procedural.” Don’t expect Will Smith or Martin Lawrence to show up on the show anytime soon, though.

Lin-Manuel Miranda in Hamilton

You may have heard of this Lin-Manuel Miranda fellow. He won a bunch of awards and wrote a musical about the old guy on the ten dollar bill. Now, Miranda will make his debut on the rebooted DuckTales. So it goes. The series reboots the 1980s DuckTales series, featuring a storyline about Scrooge McDuck gaining “guardianship of grandnephews Huey, Dewey and Louie when Donald Duck reluctantly takes them to McDuck Manor, the wonder of which enthralls the mischievous triplets. While living with their trillionaire relative, the boys learn long-held family secrets and unleash symbolic artifacts from Scrooge’s past.” Miranda will voice the character Gizmoduck. Miranda’s debut episode will air Friday, May 11 on Disney Channel and DisneyNOW.

Fear the Walking Dead is a huge hit, which I find a little surprising since it doesn’t seem like people talk about it as much as The Walking Dead. But the show continually brings in scores of viewers, so someone, somewhere, really likes this spin-off. Fear the Walking Dead is returning for its fourth season on April 15, and in anticipation of that, AMC released the first three minutes of the season premiere online. So if you can’t wait till the 15th, you’re in luck! These first few minutes introduce viewers to a new character on the show, played by Garret Dillahunt.

luke cage season 2 cast

Luke Cage season 2 will be streaming sooner than you think, and the Marvel Netflix series just added a fresh face. Black Film reports actress and singer Antonique Smith has joined the cast. Smith will play new character Nandi Tyler, a detective who took over for Misty Knight (Simone Missick) after Misty lost her arm during the events of The Defenders. Mike Colter will return as Luke Cage, a man with super strength and unbreakable skin who serves as a protector for his Harlem neighborhood. Danny Rand (Finn Jones), aka the Iron Fist, will be appearing at some point as well (sorry). Luke Cage season 2 arrives on Netflix June 22, 2018.

Ryan Murphy‘s Pose is going to make TV history, as Murphy and company have assembled “the largest cast of transgender actors in series regular roles and the largest LGBTQ cast ever for a scripted series,” per FX. The first trailer for Pose can be seen above, ahead of the June 3, 2018 premiere. “Set in the 1980s, Pose looks at the juxtaposition of several segments of life and society in New York: the rise of the luxury Trump-era universe, the downtown social and literary scene & the ball culture world.” The cast includes Dominique Jackson, Mj Rodriguez, Indya Moore, Angelica Ross, Hallie Sahar, Ryan Jamaal Swain, Billy Porter, Dyllon Burnside, Evan Peters, Kate Mara, and James Van Der Beek. The show was created by Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Steven Canals.

How Hard Can It Be

Allison Pearson‘s novel How Hard Can It Be? is going to be developed as a TV series by producer Bruna Papandrea. The book is a follow-up to Pearson’s other novel, I Don’t Know How She Does It, and follows Kate Reddy, who is facing her 50th birthday. “Her children have turned into impossible teenagers; her mother and in-laws are in precarious health; and her husband is having a midlife crisis that leaves her desperate to restart her career after years away from the workplace. Will Kate reclaim her rightful place at the very hedge fund she founded, or will she strangle in her new “shaping” underwear? Will she rekindle an old flame, or will her house burn to the ground when a rowdy mob shows up for her daughter’s surprise (to her parents) Christmas party? Surely it will all work out in the end. After all, how hard can it be?” Of the TV adaptation, Pearson said, “I am delighted that Bruna and her amazing team at Made Up Stories are transforming ‘How Hard Can It Be?’ into a compelling TV drama. Committed to telling important tales about women’s lives at this great turning point in our history, Made Up Stories is the perfect producer for my novel. We have such a wealth of great actresses in their prime right now; I can’t wait to see them bring my heroine and her friends to life.”

finding justice

Dwayne Johnson likes to keep busy. When he’s not starring in dozens of big film franchises, he’s also producing. Deadline reports that BET has ordered Finding Justice, a six-part docuseries from Johnson and Dany Garcia‘s Seven Bucks Productions. Finding Justice “tells the powerful stories of heroes, leaders, advocates and change agents in African American communities across America as they uncover injustices and fight to bring healing and change.” Johnson issued the following statement about the production:

“Seven Bucks Productions was built on the foundation of bringing diverse and influential stories to the masses…Which is why we’re excited to partner with BET to bring these powerful stories of injustice from the African-American community to light. More importantly, with this series, we’re pushing to create a platform that will enable healing, and inspire change on a global scale.”

injection

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal Cable Productions wants to turn the Warren Ellis, Declan Shalvey and Jordie Bellaire comic Injection into a TV show. “Once upon a time, there were five crazy people, and they poisoned the 21st Century. Now they have to deal with the corrosion to try and save us all from a world becoming too weird to support human life,” states the description of the comic, adding that Injection is “about how loud and strange the world is getting, about the wild future and the haunted past all crashing into the present day at once, and about five eccentric geniuses dealing with the paranormal and numinous as well as the growing weight of what they did to the planet with the Injection. Beginning with Maria Kilbride, the troubled troubleshooter for the research wing of mysterious multinational FPI, dragged from hospital to investigate a case of a possessed laboratory and a disappearance that, impossibly, has the hallmarks of ancient folklore.” This sounds very cool, although it also sounds like the type of idea that’s hard to adapt into a TV show. But perhaps it’ll work out.

The Queen’s stunning jewellery collection: Pictures of her finest jewels https://briefnews.eu/the-queens-stunning-jewellery-collection-pictures-of-her-finest-jewels/ https://briefnews.eu/the-queens-stunning-jewellery-collection-pictures-of-her-finest-jewels/#respond Wed, 28 Mar 2018 11:48:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-queens-stunning-jewellery-collection-pictures-of-her-finest-jewels/

Queen Elizabeth II, 91, has inherited a beautiful collection of jewellery which she delights in wearing on her royal tours and engagements.

Many of the jewels have a rich history making them unique and special to the Queen.

Take for example the Aquamarine Clip brooches which Her Royal Highness wore to visit Mayflower Primary School in June 2017. The Queen’s parents, Queen Elizabeth and King George VI, gave her the elegant twin brooches for her 18th birthday in 1944.

Another example includes the Centenary Rose Brooch which the Queen wore to Royal Ascot in 2016. The hand-painted diamond brooch was designed by G. Collins & Sons jewellers for the Queen Mother’s 100th birthday.

Look through this gallery to see pictures of the Queen’s stunning jewellery collection.

Pictures show the Monarch’s most famous tiaras including the Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara, made in 1874 by Russian court jeweller Bolin.

You’ll also see Queen Alexandra’s Kokoshnik Tiara, a traditional Russian style headdress created to mark the silver wedding anniversary of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra in 1888.

The Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara also features in the gallery. The tiara was a wedding present for Queen Mary in 1893.

The Queen finest jewellery also includes necklaces from King Khalid of Saudi Arabia, Lady Jardine and earrings from Queen Victoria.

The Murder Gang review: A look at Fleet Street’s crime writers’ finest characters https://briefnews.eu/the-murder-gang-review-a-look-at-fleet-streets-crime-writers-finest-characters/ https://briefnews.eu/the-murder-gang-review-a-look-at-fleet-streets-crime-writers-finest-characters/#respond Mon, 26 Mar 2018 06:29:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-murder-gang-review-a-look-at-fleet-streets-crime-writers-finest-characters/

Now he returns to Fleet Street to look at the lives and careers of Fleet Street’s crime reporters from the 1930s until the 1960s – known as the Murder Gang.

They drank in the same pubs on the Street of Shame, knew the same paid-up villains and paid-up coppers and ruthlessly pursued the same stories.

Ruthless being the key word. It was said of one newspaper they would assign four cars to each scene of a crime, one containing its reporters and three to block the road to stop their rivals.

The most powerful of the all-male coterie was Percy Hoskins of this parish who ruled the roost virtually from the 1920s until the 1980s. So important was he that proprietor Lord Beaverbrook provided him with a grace and favour home on Park Lane – ah, those were the days.

Neil Root chooses some big cases and shows how the Murder Gang covered the stories. He also reveals fascinating tales about their lives.

Apart from Hoskins, one of the most well-known was E.V. Tullett – a former copper who became the crime correspondent of the Daily Mirror and the biographer of celebrated pathologist Sir Bernard Spilsbury.

Crime stories had a huge audience to entertain –  in those heady days the News of the World was selling seven million copies every Sunday and its rival The People shifted five million.

The Murder Gang is a worthy follow-up to Frenzy!

If you don’t like insects, look away now.

If you like having your breath taken away by jaw-dropping displays of beauty, power and freakishly flexible bodies, then this is the show for you.

What’s more, I have never heard so much laughter mixed in with the gasps and involuntary profanities from a gobsmacked Cirque du Soleil audience. The inevitable clown interludes don’t always translate for UK audiences, but this show mixes silliness and style, thrills and (no) spills to dazzling effect.

Celebrities including Sir David Jason, Natalie Dormer, Alexandra Burke, Lottie Moss, Sir Ben Kingsley, Derren Brown, Mark Strong, Phillip Schofield, Adrian Lester, Brendan Cole, Dame Esther Rantzen, John Bishop, Rufus Hound, Sally Phillips and Scott Mills turned out in force on opening night.

One of them even made an unexpected appearance in the show, itself…

Sure, the storyline is slim at best, but after some previous offerings with loftier ambitions, this is rather a relief.

The set-up introduces a foolish fly who is carrying a huge egg (hence the show title) and falls for a coquettish ladybug. A kalaedoscopic array of insect and bug life interacts with the prat-falling pair, punctuated with ever more daring feats of spectacular virtuosity from the word-class cast.

British gymnastics European Champion Alanna Baker flies the home flag as the PVC-clad Black Spider but it is impossible to choose a favourite from the irresistible insect invasion.

A shocked but game Alexandra Burke’s unplanned cameo was a hilarious highlight, though.

American balancing-act artist Kyle Cragle was a dynamic dragonfly, twisting and contorting his body (and spine) is ever more eye-watering shapes.

The Canadians Catherine Audy and Alexis Trudel added romance and a rush of exhilation as they soared and spun across the huge vaulted dome as beguiling butterflies.

Suspended over the stage on an enormous frame, the massed muscle of the ubiquitous Russian and Ukranian strongmen flung their female gold-plated scarabs through the air to ever-louder gasps from the audience.

Daredevil spider Jiangming Qui risked stealing the entire show as he took his high-wire act one stage beyond belief. Before a stunned and silent crowd he ended up upside down balancing his forehead on a unicycle and pedalling with his arms.

A female troop of ant tumblers demonstrated fancy footwork as they tossed giant kiwi fruit (and each other) to open the show. Their male cricket counterparts closed the night with a crescendo of explosive tumbling across the floor and up the enormous 8 metre wall, using huge trampolines to propel themselves ever higher.

It all ended with a giant party on stage, the fly and ladybird united and thousands of gob-smacked humans struggling to believe what they had just seen.

Was Radley Metzger Our Finest Erotic Filmmaker? https://briefnews.eu/was-radley-metzger-our-finest-erotic-filmmaker/ https://briefnews.eu/was-radley-metzger-our-finest-erotic-filmmaker/#respond Fri, 29 Dec 2017 23:29:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/was-radley-metzger-our-finest-erotic-filmmaker/ Flavorwire is taking the final week of 2017 off, because God knows we need it. But all week, we’ll be reposting some of our favorite pieces from the year. Read them all here.

When Radley Metzger died in March, the news wasn’t followed by the thoughtful tributes and rapturous retrospectives that usually accompany the passing of a major filmmaker. It wasn’t hard to guess why; Metzger made “dirty movies,” erotic dramas and comedies that fed the prurient interests of their audience while displaying his own formal elegance and narrative ingenuity. He made several of them under his own name from the mid-1960s to the early 1970s; then he made several more explicit films under the assumed name of Henry Paris. Three of the latter are screening at New York’s Quad Cinema, as part of their “Erotic City” series (which begins Friday), and they’re terrific – a glimpse at the kind of artistry that was possible even in pornography, once upon a time.

So why did Metzger flip from soft- to hardcore? Because he was losing his audience, he told me a few years ago. In 1974 he released Score, a sexually charged four-hander based on an off-Broadway play (and a film, by the way, still unique in “straight” cinema for its unapologetic bisexuality). “It was a charming story, I really thought it was,” he recalled. “We really tried everything to make this thing first-class. And I even started to get good reviews. So we released the movie, we opened in two theaters, one on the East Side, one on the West Side. And nobody showed up. Nobody showed up because across the street some guy took a weekend and went out to Jersey, and in the basement they made a film of explicit sex, and everybody was going.”

His distribution company put out a couple more softcore titles, which similarly tanked. “So we sat around, we looked at each other, and said… maybe we should do this. We had access to a house on the Upper East Side, and I said, ‘Let’s… let’s do this, and um, we’ll see.’ We changed our names, because we were afraid we were gonna get arrested, and we shot this thing.”

“This thing” was The Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann, featuring the very funny Barbara Bourbon, the prolific Jamie Gillis, and (as if included as insurance) Georgina Spelvin, star of the previous year’s porn mega-hit The Devil in Miss Jones. The plot – and in Metzger’s movies, under either name, there’s always a plot – concerns a bored housewife whose husband hires a private detective to shadow her, filming the affairs he suspects she’s having.

The script is funny, mostly in a Borscht Belt kinda way (full of lines like “I guarantee I’ll get to the bottom of your wife”), but the best running gag has our heroine prodded with wordy, state-of-society questions by a random woman with a clipboard. Late in the film, she finally reveals her identity: “Oh, I’m here to give the film socially redeeming value.” Metzger was perpetually self-aware, both sending up the (often clumsy) messaging of I Am Curious (Yellow), I Am Curious (Blue), and even Vixen, while sliding in a bit of his own in a scene where our heroine gives a politician a blowjob as we hear his off-screen introduction as a moral crusader (she hurries to get him off as the distant, matronly voice runs down the degeneracy and depravity he’s fighting against).

But even in this throwaway quickie, shot in six days for forty grand in and around NYC, Metzger’s artistry shines. He sets a scene overlooking the Queensboro Bridge, six years before Manhattan (it’s even similarly framed; it’s not inconceivable that Gordon Willis and/or Woody Allen “borrowed” the shot); he trots out a meta-movie element, as the private eye (read: director) reviews the footage of her trysts with her husband; he even throws in a clever plot twist at the story’s conclusion.

Metzger’s next film under the Paris nom de plume was 1975’s Naked Came the Stranger, based on the 1969 literary hoax book perpetuated by a group of 24 journalists. It tells the story of a successful career woman who discovers her husband (and talk radio co-host) is cheating on her with one of their employees, and decides to engage in “a little messing around” in retaliation. The story is mostly told for laughs, but Metzger is also slyly interested in the psychological ramifications of infidelity (much like his contemporary, Joe Sarno).

And while he delivers the sex-picture goods – with star Darby Lloyd Rains sampling voyeurism, cross-dressing, spanking, public sex, sex with strangers, and (of course) bisexuality – Naked moves, and is pitched, like a screwball comedy. In sequence after giggly sequence, like one that finds her going down on a male friend on a city bus (“Would you like to get off on Fifth Avenue?” she asks with a wink) as mirthful music plays, Metzger conveys a sense of fun so often absent in the grim slog of porn. He even indulges in a silent movie sequence, including a Valentino-style tango in artsy black and white. It’s fun to imagine the raincoat brigade’s reaction to this – but then, against all odds, he shoots a genuinely hot sex scene in that style, complete with title cards for dirty talk.

But “Paris”’s magnum opus is 1976’s The Opening of Misty Beethoven, regarded by pretty much every authority on the matter as the single finest feature film of the golden age of “porno chic.” Somehow both a hardcore porn movie and an elegant sex comedy, Misty’s witty screenplay riffs Pygmalion in presenting the story of a clumsy sex worker (Constance Money) and the inquisitive sexologist (Jamie Gillis, again) who determines her enthusiasm and technique makes her “the absolute nadir of passion,” and takes upon himself the challenge of making her the talk of the sexy jet-setter scene.

Unlike the earlier Paris movies, which confined themselves to the tri-state area, Misty was an international production along the lines of Metzger’s earlier, snazzier Camille 2000 and Carmen, Baby (both of which also repurposed classic narratives). It’s a sexy movie, going all in on the eroticism of “teaching” passion, and a boundary-breaker as well (there’s a female-female-male scene with an extra appendage – yes, they go there – which illustrates the freedom and fluidity of the era).

But best of all, Money’s Misty gets something women in porn never get: a character arc. This is a skillful, two-part performance, the bored broad and the sexy dame, both played convincingly – and underlining a through-line in the Paris movies, which frequently focus on women who are unapologetically sexual. If anything, they’re atypically sympathetic; all they want is to have a satisfying orgasm, a goal frequently stymied by the dumb men tasked with the job.

Also notably, Metzger leaned towards casting real actors, so his characters look like real people, rather than cartoon sex dolls of the modern era; thus, the eroticism feels more legit, because we believe the people who are experiencing it. Even though he was making hardcore movies, there’s far more foreplay than intercourse, and a couple of stylish moments aside, these people mostly have credible sex – good, but not spectacularly acrobatic. More importantly, Metzger was a “real” storyteller before he was a pornographer, and you can tell; any audience member paying the slightest attention will feel an honest-to-goodness emotional investment in the make-up sex at the end of Pamela Mann. And in Misty Beethoven, both the director and his actors care enough about the lead characters to give the relationship weight – and thus, when they finally hook up at the end, it’s like a powder keg going off.

The success with which he interpolates Shaw into the latter film really brings home the degree to which Metzger used the simple tools of traditional storytelling to make great porn. When it’s all said and done, he’s using a tried-and-true narrative, supplemented by (character-driven!) sex. He’s experimenting with the kind of filmmaking it seemed, for a brief moment in that decade, could come out of the “porno chic” movement, in which we saw intimacy between characters rather than actors, and where frank sexuality could further a story, rather than interrupt it.

But anyone who’s seen Boogie Nights – in which the Burt Reynolds character is, many say, inspired by Mr. Metzger – knows what happened instead: video technology brought hardcore into the home, where clever filmmakers couldn’t hold viewers hostage for a real story between the sex scenes, because they’d just fast-forward past them. Metzger made his last film as Henry Paris in 1979, and his last film of any kind five years later, yet his contribution to sex and the screen remains. Both under his own name and Paris’s, Metzger floated the bold notion that erotica could be art – a lesson his industry promptly forgot.

These three Metzger/Paris films are all screening as part of Quad Cinema’s “Erotic City” series, with “The Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann” running Monday and Tuesday, “Naked Came the Stranger” running Monday and Wednesday, and “The Opening of Misty Beethoven” screening Monday and Thursday.

WA star Scales Of Justice will arrive in Victoria on Thursday before Group 1 tilts at Caulfield this spring.

Trainer Lindsey Smith, who has enjoyed plenty of success in Melbourne with horses such as Plastered (VRC Derby) and Old Comrade (Australian Cup), said Scales Of Justice would be initially based at Warrnambool.

With nine wins and eight minor placings from 17 starts, Scales of Justice has not started since Railway Stakes success at Ascot in November.

Acclaimed as WA horse of the year this week, Scales of Justice will be aimed at the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on October 1 and the Toorak Handicap (1600m) two weeks later. Scales Of Justice will be based at Jarrod McLean’s stables.
