AUSTRALIA have been left frustrated in the UAE by a “strange” and little-known rule which has twice cost them crucial wickets in the Test series against Pakistan.
]]>A surprise pick in Justin Langer’s first Test squad as Australia coach, Finch is in line to make his debut in October, just one month short of his 32nd birthday. Hussey was 30 when he finally got his hands on a baggy green and went on to score 6235 runs at 51.51 across 79 Tests.
Waugh is hopeful Finch enjoys a similarly successful career post-30, and has backed the Victorian’s selection.

“Mike Hussey didn’t debut for Australia until he was 28 (31) and became one of Australia’s great players,” Waugh told Fox Sports News. “That is a really good benchmark to follow and to aspire in his footsteps. There’s no reason it can’t be done.
“Only recently Chris Rogers came into the squad when he was over 30 so it can be done.”
Finch himself has set his eyes on following the same path as Hussey.
“That’s the plan. Hopefully if I get an opportunity I can take it (like Hussey) — that would be the ideal scenario,” Finch said at Australia’s training camp in Brisbane.
Eleven years after his first-class debut, Finch admitted he had almost given up on receiving the Test selectors’ call.
“I thought it was not now or never but … if it didn’t happen now it was less likely to happen down the track,” he said.
“It was a good call to get. I think my heart rate went through the roof.”
For the second time in a week, Finch has blasted a century against England – notching his tenth ODI ton – as Australia posted an underwhelming target at the Gabba.
The hosts finished 9-270, with Cameron White unbeaten on 15 and Andrew Tye run out on the final ball for 8.
England is 1-15 in reply after three overs, with Alex Hales on 9 and Jonny Bairstow on 4.
Jason Roy, who blasted 180 in the first ODI, was caught at short midwicket for two in the first over from Mitchell Starc.
Earlier, Australia once again failed to make the most of a strong foundation. Having gambled on late runs, the hosts were 3-209 in the 40th over when Mitchell Marsh was stumped for 36 off Adil Rashid. Finch fell shortly after for 106, leaving Australia in major trouble with a big first-innings total essential on a good batting deck at the Gabba.
Marcus Stoinis came and went cheaply, caught behind off Rashid for four – as did Mitchell Starc (3).
Debutant Alex Carey played a lovely knock, before falling victim to a stunning run-out from Chris Woakes – who kicked the ball onto the stumps soccer-style to send the wicketkeeper on his way for 27.
Finch and Warner put on 68 for the opening wicket before the vice-captain was out caught at first slip by Joe Root off Moeen Ali for 35 from 40 balls.
Smith added just 18 before he was trapped LBW to Joe Root in a huge blow to the home side.

Smith was unconvinced, calling for a review – but was not saved by the third umpire, with replays showing the ball would’ve clipped leg stump.
Travis Head’s woeful ODI form continued with a shocking, soft dismissal – bunting a simple return catch to Root to be sent packing for 7.
“That’s not good enough,” noted England great Kevin Pietersen of Head’s dismissal.
Australia. looking to reverse a horror run of ODI form and bounce back from a first-up beating, entered the clash with a new gloveman to help them level the series, a fresh fast bowler and a familiar face who is back from the wilderness.
Wicketkeeper Tim Paine will miss having been struck down by the gastro bug which has swept through the Australian camp and in-form former AFL prospect Alex Carey will take his place.
Jhye Richardson has also come in, in place of the ill Josh Hazlewood, while Cameron White has returned to the middle order in place of Adam Zampa.

This year’s video games have gifted us with an array of stunning moments, like punching Nazis or scaling Hyrule’s highest mountains or spinning frantically in battle, unsure whether to trust the voices in our heads. The GamesBeat team talked over a few of our favorite gaming memories, and though it was a difficult decision, we’ve picked just one as our Standout Gaming Moment of the year for our GamesBeat Rewind year-end event.
Lewis Finch’s level in What Remains of Edith Finch

Listen to us discuss this category in the audio version of the podcast right here:
Giant Sparrow’s What Remains of Edith Finch doesn’t punch you in the gut with its emotional story. Instead, it slowly peels off the bandage and then stands quietly over you as you bleed out on the floor.
You explore Edith’s childhood home and play as each of her family members in their last moments, and none of the stories resemble on another. Some capture the innocent hubris of youth, like Calvin’s tale and his determination to swing as high as he can. Others are joyful, colorful experiences, even though the underlying narrative is horrifying.
Lewis Finch’s story transcends all the others.
When you play as Lewis, you control him in real life at his dull cannery job. With the right stick, you reach up, grab fish, and behead them with a rusty blade. With the left stick, though, you roam his imagination, maneuvering a tiny figure through a magical dungeon with strange and wondrous things.
Lewis’s job is menial, thankless work. But in his imagination, he begins amassing followers, friends, and worshippers. He sails from city to city, conquering everything in sight. He’s a musician, a ruler, a hero. At first, his daydreams take up just part of the screen, and you can still see the mundane cannery around him. Then, as you continue playing, his land of wonder overtakes reality.
What Remains of Edith Finch follows Lewis’s story to its brutal end. It’s beautiful and tragic, a death that occurs even though people around him are trying to help him. And it all starts from what appears to be harmless, everyday escapism.
Lewis’s story isn’t the only thing that makes this a standout moment, though. The ingenious mechanics echo what’s going on in his head, forcing you to multitask. And very quickly, you fall into a rhythm of reaching up and grabbing the fish, all while devoting most of your attention to navigating his imagination. Real life isn’t very interesting and you’d much rather discover new lands in his fantasy world.

Note: This piece contains pretty significant spoilers for What Remains of Edith Finch.
What Remains of Edith Finch wastes no time explaining that it’s a game about death. Perhaps unsurprisingly, however, the game’s much more interesting themes are a considerably slower burn. As instantly, world-turning-ly impactful as death can be, Edith Finch ably shows that death’s got nothing on the decay that comes afterwards.
The game’s plot, told in a series of vignettes, follows the final days and moments of Finch family members. The title character rummages through journals, drawings, ad hoc shrines to her dead ancestors—she even flips through one mass market comic book written about their passing. Together, the materials weave the tale of a supposed family curse that’s been stalking the Finches for generations.

The critically acclaimed What Remains of Edith Finch launched on Xbox One yesterday, but those who had a chance to play it on PC and PlayStation 4 when it first debuted in April have had a few months now to process the story. Developed by Giant Sparrow and published by Annapurna Interactive, it’s a narrative-driven adventure game about a doomed family that’s been described as haunting.
I caught up with Giant Sparrow’s creative director Ian Dallas to look back at the design process behind Edith Finch and what the fan reaction has been so far.
“It all started with exploring a sense of awe, particularly the kind of awe I’ve experienced in nature,” said Dallas over the phone. “The kernel of that originally was the experience of scuba diving in Washington state, the feeling of looking at the bottom of the ocean sloping away into seemingly infinite darkness. The way things can be simultaneously beautiful, but also overwhelming.”
Edith Finch follows the titular character as she returns to her family home to find out the truth about what happened to her relatives. You play as each of her family members, witnessing each of their deaths from a first-person perspective. Each scenario features a kind of magic realism to it — Molly turns into various animals, Lewis escapes into a fantasy land, and Milton simply disappears, leaving behind a series of inky black drawings.
Some of the deaths are more concrete, whereas others are left up to the players’ imaginations. Barbara’s death has turned into an urban legend, obscured through various retellings including an off-color comic book that sketches out a fantastical ending for her using horror movie tropes. Dallas says the genre of “weird fiction” was a large source of inspiration, citing authors like Neil Gaiman, Edgar Allen Poe, and Jorge Luis Borges.
“I expect that players will wrestle with their own interpretations of these things,” said Dallas. “What we found is that—another part of weird fiction is that sense of murkiness. Your inability to ever really understand what is going. And not because the truth is being hidden from you. It’s a lot worse. Like in H.P. Lovecraft and a lot of other stories, the world is just too complicated or too bizarre for your brain to understand.”
Dallas says that some players were upset that the ending didn’t fully resolve all the mysteries of the game. The family’s curse, for instance, is never actually confirmed to be real. At the end, just as you finally get to revisit the sunken house from the Old World, you literally have the story torn away from you — or maybe, you’re meant to believe that there are no answers to be found. Some of the subtext suggests that imagination and stories were the real culprit behind all the tragic deaths. Dallas says that it’s much more interesting to him to leave the story open-ended and let players digest and process it for themselves.
“We’ve gotten a lot of strong positive reactions, people saying the story was one of the most impactful experiences of their whole life,” said Dallas. “People have called out the ending specifically. They really like the way this wraps up. And then other people feel upset that things didn’t get resolved.”
Dallas says that the main thrust of the game is to provide a space where players can consider the topic of mortality, not to wrap things up neatly with a bow.
At first glance, What Remains of Edith Finch might remind people of so-called “walking simulators,” a term that was originally used disparagingly to categorize games where the main mechanic is to walk around and interact with the environment. The term isn’t used as pejoratively anymore, especially since the release of critically acclaimed titles such as Gone Home and Firewatch, which featured strong stories and characters.
Dallas says that Edith Finch isn’t really a walking simulator per se, but there isn’t really a better term for this kind of genre right now. It shares some traits with other titles — after all, you guide Edith Jr. through her childhood home and inspect the environment — but he says that Giant Sparrow worked to add a lot of different types of interactivity to complement the exploratory aspect.
“It was extremely challenging to come up with—I don’t know what the final tally was, but something like 13 different control schemes for the game, each one having to be tuned a bit and evolving over time,” said Dallas. And then the challenge of, in this game, really, combining all of those things into something that feels somewhat cohesive.”
Dallas said that they actually created several stories that didn’t make it into the final game. They culled the vignettes down based on watching people playtest them and seeing the emotional responses. The theme of getting lost in imagination wasn’t even part of the game at the start; that theme actually emerged organically after several prototypes and playtest sessions.
“With 13 stories or so, there was a lot of organic, back and forth to the stories. And even more so with Edith herself, trying to figure out what Edith’s perspective on all of this should be,” said Dallas. “Ultimately the question is, as a player, what do you care about? What’s interesting to you? What can Edith be talking about when you enter a room that feels like it’s speaking to something you’ve already prepared for, and doesn’t feel like just a voice in your ear prattling along about something you’re not really connected to?”
He added: “For players, what we found – and so what we created – was this sense of not quite knowing what to believe in any of these stories—a lot of them can go in various ways depending on your interpretation of events. Because that was already there for players, we made that the centerpiece of Edith’s own story.”

The moody mystery of What Remains of Edith Finch is coming to Xbox One on July 19. It launched earlier this year on PC and the PlayStation 4 to critical acclaim, with reviewers citing the innovative storytelling and empathetic characters as highlights.
Edith Finch is a narrative-driven adventure game about a young woman’s investigation of her tragic family history. You join her on her journey as she revisits her childhood home, and you play as each of her relatives as they meet their unfortunate ends.
It’s not lighthearted stuff, but developer Giant Sparrow infuses the game with charm and even some humor despite the somewhat macabre nature of the topic. It has some practice. Giant Sparrow’s first game, The Unfinished Swan (2012), also explored death and grieving, and there’s actually a small Easter egg in Edith Finch that refers back to it.
Edith Finch is the first title from the newly formed publisher Annapurna Interactive. It’s the video game division of Annapurna Pictures, which produced award-winning movies like Her, Zero Dark Thirty, and American Hustle. So far, all its titles differ drastically in tone. Gorogoa, a hand-drawn puzzle game, and Donut County, an adorable Katamari-esque game where you play as a little black hole in the ground, are both slated for release later this year.

Cricket: Australia’s unlucky run at the ICC Champions Trophy has continued after losing to England in a rain-affected match.

EXCUSES were ever-present for Australia during what was a muddled and eventually failed Champions Trophy campaign.
Poor English weather washed out two matches and a practice game, and then ended the final match against England early, although the Aussies were in a heap of trouble.
Opener Aaron Finch, who posted his highest ODI score for 12 months with 68, said the lack of continuity in their cricket hadn’t helped Australia during what was a stop-start tournament.
But he said they players had played “plenty of cricket” and had no excuses for an ultimately unsuccessful showing.
“We came here to win the tournament, anything less than that you are disappointed,” he said.
“Today, a couple of us didn’t go on and get big scores, which we should have.
“I think we still had a great preparation coming in. The rain, obviously wasn’t ideal, but that wasn’t an excuse.”’
Questions were also asked as to why slugger Chris Lynn didn’t get a start in any of the three pool games, with all-rounder Marcus Stoinis also left on the sidelines despite a last-start 146 not out against New Zealand in February.

Australian selectors went with the same team that had Bangladesh on the ropes at The Oval last Monday — before that game was washed out — which included Moises Henriques, who made just 18 and 17 runs in two innings batting at number four.
Travis Head, who topscored with 71 not out in his only innings for the tournament having also made 85 not out in his sole warm-up game against Sri Lanka, carried the “no excuses” line, despite the underperformance of some.
“We came here with big expectations of doing really well and to be leaving early, is not a great feeling,” he said.
“We’ve played a lot of cricket in the past 12 months, everyone was in good form leading in to it. There’s no real excuses on that front.
“It was frustrating, with the weather, but we knew it was going to be like that, we had to move on from that pretty quickly.

Cricket: Australia was looking promising as they charged towards a big total against England, then it all fell apart.
“I just want to win games for Australia, unfortunately I wasn’t good enough to do that today.”
Head and Finch will return home but only for short period.
Finch has a county contract with Surrey to fulfil and will return to the UK, while Head will be part of the Australia A team scheduled to tour South Africa in July, if the current pay impasse can be broken.
