This one came during Rizin 14, the Japanese MMA promotion’s New Year’s Eve’s spectacular, as Japanese lightweight veteran Yusuke Yachi faced off against former UFC fighter Johnny Case on the preliminary card in Saitama, Japan.

A punch from Case left Yachi with a cut on his right eye which quickly swelled up, causing his eye to almost completely close.

Unsurprisingly, the ringside doctor was called into action to assess the extent of Yachi’s injury and ruled that the Japanese favorite was not able to continue safely as the bout was waved off late in the second round.

It meant Case earned a TKO victory on his Rizin debut and left Yachi with a nasty injury that will take some time to fully heal.

The following video is pretty impressive. It shows an F/A-18C being hit by a lightning bolt.

Along with the flash of light, you can clearly hear a loud bang inside the cockpit, taking the pilot by surprise. Shock aside, the aircraft was probably not really damaged by the bolt.

The discovery of the young woman’s corpse on the Triunvirato estate, a sugar mill in Cuba’s Matanzas province, was gruesome, but not surprising. Not only was Triunvirato a property where many enslaved people were housed and maltreated, but the early morning hours of Nov. 6, 1843, when the body was found, followed a night of rebellion. Enslaved people from Cuba’s plantations and sugar mills across Matanzas had risen up against their masters in an organized effort to free themselves. Carlota, an enslaved woman of the Lucumi nation, was among the resistance fighters and one of the movement’s leaders, helping coordinate the rebellion across the region. She was also the warrior whose body was found that November morning.

Most narratives of slave rebellions are told by and about men — they conjure images from Stanley Kubrick’s Spartacus or perhaps Cecil B. DeMille’s The Ten Commandments. These so-called master narratives are hagiographies of White male excellence. Women, and specifically women of color, do not fit into these accounts because political firebrands and liberation fighters are not roles that sync with society’s traditional notions of femininity. But Carlota was as cunning and resourceful as any of history’s male revolutionaries, and her contributions to the slave rebellion of 1843 should not be underestimated.

Information about Carlota’s background is scant — enslaved people were dehumanized, in part, by erasing their pasts. Historians speculate that she was kidnapped as a child from the region recognized today as the nations of Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria, and forced to endure the brutal middle passage across the Atlantic. It’s impossible to know how often Carlota was bought and sold in the business of the Caribbean slave trade, but experts agree that she played a leadership role in the Triunvirato rebellion by spreading it to the neighboring plantation and gaining the support of other slaves. By the time the uprising was quashed, it had reached five plantations.

The Triunvirato rebellion shaped the course of Cuban history — and Fidel Castro’s ideology of the oppressed rising up to defeat their oppressor.

The Nov. 5 uprising did not take place in a vacuum, says Aisha Finch, author of Rethinking Slave Rebellion in Cuba. Enslaved people had been resisting in violent and nonviolent ways throughout Cuban history. But increasing numbers of slaves arriving from Africa — over 600,000 were brought to the island in the 19th century, some with military training — combined with harsher conditions of confinement, Finch argues, gave the 1843 revolt a much greater resonance than prior rebellions.

Whether Carlota is viewed as a savage rebel or a freedom fighter, the Triunvirato revolt is ingrained in Cuba’s national consciousness. Its central place in the country’s history, Finch says, is because many see it as a precursor to Fidel Castro’s socialist revolution of 1959. “Leaders of the revolution [in 1959] looked to this moment as a symbol of an ongoing spirit of Cuban resistance,” she says.

And still, Carlota, and other women who joined the resistance, are seldom mentioned in the colonial archives. What hasn’t escaped the archives, however, are testimonials of Carlota’s ferocity and leadership. Witness accounts describe her attacking María de Regla, an overseer’s daughter, with a machete; one fieldworker, Matea Gangá, notes that Carlota bragged about how hard she had struck her victim. De Regla survived Carlota’s attack and later told investigators that as she lay wounded, the “Black woman” had shouted to other slaves that “they should strike her harder because she was still living.”

It’s impossible to say whether this and other accounts of the insurrection were carefully crafted, but it’s also clear that Carlota did not shy away from a fight. And her skills as a combatant were easily matched by her mastery in planning and organizing the rebellion. Some sources assert that she used talking drums — hourglass-shaped instruments of West African origin — to communicate with her fellow resistance fighters on the Triunvirato estate and those on the other plantations. The colonists assumed that the drums’ sole purpose was to make music, when instead they were used to spread critical information about the planned uprising.

The Triunvirato rebellion shaped the course of Cuban history — and Castro’s ideology of the oppressed rising up to defeat their oppressor. Today, visitors can tour what remains of the sugar mill and see a towering statue of Carlota, machete in hand. But while she is memorialized in Cuba — the country called its 1974 intervention in Angola to advance its fight for independence “Operacíon Carlota” — she remains virtually unknown in other parts of the world.

Although Carlota’s name is unfamiliar to many, she stands as an embodiment of revolutionary ideals — and a resounding strike against colonial master narratives.

In a unanimous 9-0 ruling on Friday, the court ordered that reporter Ben Makuch must hand over his materials on a man by the name of Farah Mohamed Shirdon. Makuch wrote three articles about Shirdon and his involvement with Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) in 2014.

The ruling was due to the fact that it found Canada’s interest in prosecuting crime to be greater than the media’s right to privacy in its news gathering, the Toronto Star reported. 

Shirdon, a Canadian citizen, left for Turkey in March 2014 and then appeared in an Islamic State propaganda video that turned up on the internet. In the footage, he tore up his Canadian passport, threw it into a fire, and said: “With help from Allah, we are coming to slaughter you.”

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has been actively in pursuit of Makuch’s materials since 2015, when it obtained a production order under the Criminal Code. It directed Vice Media and Makuch to hand over all documents and data relating to communications with Shirdon, who is now believed to have been killed.

Refusing to give it to authorities so easily, Makuch brought an application to end the production order. That was, however, dismissed, and the decision was upheld by the Ontario Court of Appeal.

The case then went to the Supreme Court, which began hearing arguments in May. Vice Media’s argument was that lower courts had not been correctly applying nine conditions previously set out by the Supreme Court when it comes to assessing the reasonableness of a media outlet search. The Supreme Court justices sided against the media outlet on Friday.

One of the justices, Michael Moldaver, wrote that the production order issued for Makuch’s materials should stand because handing them over would not reveal a confidential source, and no “off the record” or “not for attribution” communications would be disclosed.

Speaking after the ruling, Vice Media called it a “dark day for press freedom, which is a basic tenet of democracy…while we’ve lost this battle, nothing can shake our belief that a free press is instrumental to a truthful understanding of the world in which we live.”

Russia’s newest supersonic Su-57 stealth fighter jet was filmed performing a mid-air refueling simulation. The footage was captured from the cockpit of a Su-30SM fighter, as well as from the ramp of the An-12 transport aircraft.

Imitating a refueling formation, test pilot guru Sergey Bogdan lined up his Su-57 for a 10-minute mid-air pitstop behind An-12 military transport aircraft, at a distance so close that Zvezda journalists who captured the video could see his face clearly.

The jet approached close enough so that the refueling tanker would be able to extend the refueling cable and far enough to avoid a mid-air collision. While the test run did not feature the actual refueling of the jet, Zvezda also took the first-ever shots of the Su-57 being refueled mid-air by a Il-78 tanker.

The test pilot’s skills were also shown from the other angle, that of the Su-30SM fighter jet.

The multirole, single-seat, twin-engine Su-57 jet, known as PAK FA and T-50 during development and production stages, is designed for engaging all types of air, ground and surface targets. The jet will be equipped with a broad range of guided and unguided weapons, making it an irreplaceable asset to the Russian military. The stealth jet has already proved its worth during a combat mission in Syria, where Russia last year deployed four planes to test them in real combat scenarios.

An F/A-18 naval fighter jet from the aircraft carrier USS ‘Ronald Reagan’ crashed into the Philippine Sea near Japan’s Okinawa Prefecture, with both pilots rescued.

The aircraft crashed after suffering a “mechanical issue” while traveling on a routine mission in the Philippine Sea, the US Navy said in a statement, adding that both pilots successfully ejected and were quickly recovered by the USS ‘Ronald Reagan.’

According to the Japanese Coast Guard, the incident happened 300km southwest of Kitadaitojima Island, which is part of the nation’s Okinawa Prefecture.

The aircraft carrier resumed normal operations, and the US Navy launched an official probe into the crash.

The lost plane belonged to the US 7th Fleet, which is based in Yokosuka, Japan. Over the past two years, the fleet gained a notorious reputation of the most ‘disaster-prone’ detachment of the US Navy. It was blighted by high-profile incidents, including ship collisions, which claimed the lives of numerous servicemen.

Last month, an MH-60 Seahawk helicopter crash-landed on the deck of the USS ‘Ronald Reagan.’ In June, an F-15 fighter jet crashed into the sea near Okinawa. There were no fatalities in these incidents.

Several cutting-edge J-20 fighter jets have made a rare appearance in China, performing at the opening of the country’s largest airshow. The planes have proved to be truly “stealthy,” mostly avoiding the camera since their launch.

The airshow kicked off in the coastal city of Zhuhai on Tuesday and will last until the end of the week. Three 5th-generation J-20 fighter jets performed at the opening ceremony, providing an unique opportunity to take videos and snap pictures of the secretive Chinese aircraft.

The cutting-edge planes are seen flying in formation, making sharp high-speed turns and showing off amazing agility. The machines then break the formation and perform tricky solo stunts.

The J-20 has been in development since the late 2000s and was officially unveiled back in 2016, making a very brief appearance at an airshow. The planes entered service in March 2017, yet the stealthy aircraft is still rarely seen in public. Apart from J-20s, an upgraded J-10B fighter jet has also performed during the airshow’s opening ceremony.

Iran’s defense minister has launched the production of a domestically-designed fourth-generation fighter jet, just as Tehran is bracing for sweeping US sanctions, expected to come into effect early next week.

“Soon the required number of these planes will be produced and put at the service of the Air Force,” Defense Minister Brigadier-General Amir Hatami said, at the ceremony marking the start of the production. He went on to hail the accomplishments of Iranian engineers, made in the face of “the enemies’ psychological warfare, propagandist blackmail, and economic sanctions.” Iran will also “spare no effort” as it seeks to further develop “peaceful defense technologies” to protect its sovereignty, Hatami added.

The fourth-generation jet, called Kowsar, boasts “advanced avionics”, a multipurpose radar and a fire control system linked to a digital military data network as well as an independent radio navigation system, Iran’s Press TV reported.

Footage showing the jets being assembled at an Iranian defense industry facility has also been released. Part of the video shows the jet during an apparent test flight.

The “completely indigenously-made” jet was first unveiled at a defense show in August. At that time it was announced that the aircraft is to be produced in two versions – as a single-seat and a two-seat fighter – and will be used for aerial support missions as well as for pilot training.
 The plane apparently drew the attention of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who was spotted sitting in the new plane’s cockpit during the airshow.

The announcement by Hatami came just two days before the US sanctions targeting Iran’s shipping, finance and energy sectors are expected to come into force.

Tehran has repeatedly dismissed the US punitive measures by saying it would be still capable of managing its economy despite the pressure. Earlier on Saturday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei slammed US President Donald Trump’s policy by saying that he “disgraced” US prestige while also claiming that American power has, in fact, been “declining.”

A newly-bought Egyptian Air Force MiG-29 jet has crashed during a training flight, prompting both Cairo and the Russian manufacturer to investigate. The Egyptian military says a flight control system error is to blame.

The pilot had to eject and is alive, the Egyptian defense ministry said in a statement.“The fighter jet has crashed during a practice flight in one of the training areas because of a technical fault in the aircraft control system,” the ministry’s spokesperson said.

An Egyptian Air Force commission is already investigating the crash while Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation – the company that produced the aircraft – also said it would send its specialist to assist the investigation.

The jet was supplied to Egypt earlier this year as part of a contract between Moscow and Cairo worth $ 2.5 billion. Russia is expected to supply 46 MiG-29M/M2 fighter jets to Egypt in total by 2020.

First deliveries were made back in 2017, according to Alerksandr Mikheev, the head of the Russian arms exporter Rosoboronexport. At the same time, the Egyptian pilots started learning to fly the new aircraft, he added.

The MiG-29M/M2 is a fourth-generation fighter jet, which is an advanced variant of the classic Soviet MiG-29 fighter. The new model has extended flight range as well as new avionics. The jet has two variants – a single-seat MiG-29M and a two-seat MiG-29M2, both of which have been supplied to Egypt.

The jets sold to the Arab nation are also fitted with the latest Russian infrared search and track systems and electronic countermeasure jamming pods, in addition to upgraded smokeless engines.
