Some movies and TV shows are so iconic that even the fake products from them become well known. That’s why Gallery 1988 put together a second edition of their Product Placement show honoring some of the most beloved fake products from film and television.
For the Gallery 1988 Product Placement 2018 show, artists like Danny Haas, Dave Perillo, Doug LaRocca, Joel Hunter, Jen Taylor, Nathan Ebersole, Ryan Brinkerhoff and many more creating posters, advertisements and more pay tribute to things like the Remembrall from Harry Potter, Snake Juice from Parks and Recreation, the night vision goggles from Jurassic Park and much more.
Gallery 1988 Product Placement Art

Frankly, I’m amazed that there hasn’t been a piece like the one above for the Zoltar wish-granting machine from Big. Meanwhile, the Cones of Dunshire from Parks and Recreation gets a Dungeons & Dragons style players guide, and the vacuum haircut machine known as the Suck Kut from Wayne’s World sucks your will to live. Plus, it’s October, so there’s no better time to pick up some special masks from Nichols Hardware for Halloween.
These are just some of our favorite pieces from the new show, all of which are for sale right now from the Gallery 1988 website. The edition sizes vary from piece to piece, as does the price of each print and the size as well. As of now, almost all the prints are still for sale, but if there’s one that catches your eye, you’ll want to go pick it up right away so you don’t miss your chance.

Ahead of Harry & Meghan‘s premiere Sunday (8/7c), TVLine got a few minutes with the fictional bride-to-be, aka Midnight, Texas‘ Parisa Fitz-Henley. Read on for her insight on the royal lovebirds, co-star Murray Fraser (Victoria) and what it felt like to slip into Markle’s now-iconic threads.
If there is one thing Princess Leia proves time and time again in the Star Wars series, it’s that she is not to be underestimated. From her refusal to back down in the face of space-fascism and Darth Vader’s threats, to her no-nonsense approach to bounty-hunters and their unrelenting charm, she is constantly poised and insistent, displaying behaviour fit for any princess. And military general. And Senator. And PhD doctor.
These facts don’t disappear when we’re met with those widely replayed shots of her, imprisoned and forced to wear a gold bikini, or as the girl who says ‘I love you’ and receives a supportive, but ice-cool ‘I know’ in return. Even under the clouding effect of the male gaze, she remains a princess, a military general, a senator, and she still has a PhD.
Princess Leia is independent, the subtext between her and Han says. She is compassionate, her behaviour toward Luke says. It’s her authority which defines her as a princess who suffers no fools; an extension of not simply her royal lineage, but her uncompromising, strong personality. This shows in the fire that is never missing in her voice: it’s the sound of a princess who fights to be heard.
San, the ‘Princess Mononoke’, or the Princess of the Wolf-Gods, is a human who hates humanity. A 15 year old who lives in the forest with the beasts, she wields a dagger in the face of anyone that trespasses into her territory. Aided by the wolves who raised her, and often shown with the blood of The Great Forest Spirit around her mouth, there is an admirable ferocity to everything that she does. She is ruthlessly compassionate, incredibly defensive, and extraordinarily sure of her way of life. In short, she is both terrifying and incredible. But, she is also given the space to make mistakes.
In a film that plays with what it means to be human and our capacity for destruction, we witness San’s understanding of the world grow from non-nuanced black and white binaries to the exact opposite. In one encounter with the human Prince Ashitaka, her dagger is at his throat as she prepares to kill him. But his response, a woozy, disarming ‘you’re beautiful’, isn’t simply a stunning subversion of the romantic dynamic between two protagonists. It’s also the beginning of her journey into recognising the humanity she shares with Ashitaka.
But San’s confusion doesn’t diminish the certainty with which she defends the forest, or the importance she places in protecting and preserving her way of life. It strengthens it. As the battle continues, she accepts the uncertainty of what she doesn’t know whilst fighting for what she thinks is right.
Long-haired and dressed in pink, PB is the kind, compassionate ruler you would expect for a place called Candy Kingdom. Adventuretime’s Princess Bubblegum is probably closest to the stereotypical image of a princess on this list. But she is also more than an implication of gooey sweetness.
Viewers of Adventure Time get to see Princess Bubblegum concocting experiments, fighting intruders, bioengineering pumpkins. Her role on the show subtly illustrates that sweetness, quick wittedness, and intelligence are not mutually exclusive. Credited as an inventor on top of diplomat and royal, she holds the official, unquestioned title of ‘returned pricientist’ (princess scientist). For a TV show aimed at children, a princess who is depicted as equally familiar in both a white lab-coat and glasses and a pink dress and crown is immeasurably important.
Everyone’s favourite red-haired Swedish strong-girl is also, surprisingly, a princess. Daughter of a South Seas seafarer, Princess Pippilotta Comestibles Windowshade Curlymint Ephraimsdaughter Longstocking demonstrates the kindness and compassion that have become staples of expected royal behaviour. Except, she exhibits them without any formal training or frills.
There are no books being placed onto her head. No montage-style displays of elocution lessons. Pippi is self-reliant and honestly, more than just a little bit strange. But that’s the point. Whether it’s placing rude policemen in trees, or refusing to condone the phrase ‘suffering from freckles’ because she loves hers, Pippi’s quick-wittedness exposes a confidence that the grown-ups can’t take away. For instance, after challenging strongman Adolf to a wrestling match at the circus, Pippi shrugs off the criticism that she’d be unable to beat him because ‘he’s the world’s strongest man’ by letting everyone know that she is the world’s strongest girl. It’s no surprise that she ends up winning the wrestling match.
Messy and brave, she is the picture of unconventional strength; both metaphorically and literally. But what Pippi lacks in social graces, she makes up for in heart. Her can-do, no-nonsense approach wins her the support and admiration of everyone in the village. She is truly a ‘people’s princess.’
Alien princess Starfire of Tamaran, a DC Comics creation, is best known for being 1/5th of the Teen Titans. Sensitive and naive, she conveys the difficulty of being foreign to a place whilst also being sure of who you are and where you come from. ‘There will always be people who say mean words,’ She says after being called a racial slur. ‘And sometimes their minds cannot be changed. But there are many people that do not judge people based on how they look, or where they came from. Those are the people who matter most.’
Often downplayed as the quirkier of the Teen Titans, speaking in strange syntax and cottoning onto jokes last, readings of her as weak fail to account for her loyalty, her kindness, and her protective streak. She is a princess who firmly believes in doing the right thing, who is playful and trusting, and who conveys an outlook of the world which is conditioned by a strong moral compass. But Starfire’s ultimate strength is in her natural habit of incorporating her struggles and bad days into a a positivity which is almost aspirational. She accepts her own vulnerability without shame.
Ororo Munroe, daughter of a tribal queen from Kenya who was raised in Harlem and Cairo, is another superhero whose royal lineage is often forgotten. She is one of Marvel’s most important superheroes. Much more than her mutant ability to control the weather, her strengths lie in strong leadership, empathy, and a sense of good judgement that often eclipses the rest of the X-Men team.
Whether it’s protecting the children at Xavier’s School For Gifted Youngsters from nightly raids, or electrocuting the bad guys as soon as they come her way, Storm possesses a strong certainty of character. She isn’t without passion. When Nightcrawler asks her how someone so beautiful can be so angry, she is quick to defend her anger as her survival tactic. It’s her refusal to tolerate injustice that guides her actions, and which sets the precedent for others to follow in her footsteps.
A thief, a fighter, and eventually a teacher too, Storm is one of the most capable figures in the X-Men team: so much so that it’s shocking she hasn’t had her own feature-film yet. So much so that, it is equally surprising that, in Professor X’s absence, it’s Cyclops – and not Storm – who is delegated leader of the team.
Mia discovers that she is a princess at the age of 16, and the warmth of her ordinariness is thrilling. Like most teenage girls, she is smart, funny and much more capable than she realises. We follow the growth of her character as she steps into what it means to be a princess and cheer as her confidence slowly grows.
The heir of Genovia learns how to carry herself in more ways than ones that are linked to her posture, and the end result, though partially linked to her physical transformation, is satisfying because it also indicates, finally, a contentment with herself. ‘Me? A princess?’ She scoffs, rejecting the fantasy of who she is almost immediately. But a character who is unapologetically herself, and who is seen refusing to be a part of the in-crowd, appeals. Princess Mia doesn’t give up her teenage habits. But she proves the exceptional nature of them, and remains a princess who is unapologetically herself.

AI’s not quite ready to build photorealistic worlds on its own. But it’s getting pretty close.
Researcher Qifeng Chen of Stanford and Intel fed his AI system 5,000 photos from German streets. Then, with some human help it can build slightly blurry made-up scenes. The image at the top of this article is a example of the network’s output.
To create an image a human needs to tell the AI system what goes where. Put a car here, put a building there, place a tree right there. It’s paint by numbers and the system generates a wholly unique scene based on that input.
Chen’s AI isn’t quite good enough to create photorealistic scenes just yet. It doesn’t know enough to fill in all those tiny pixels. It’s not going to replace the high-end special effects houses that spend months building a world. But, it could be used to create video game and VR worlds where not everything needs to look perfect in the near future.
Intel plans on showing off the tech at the International Conference on Computer Vision in October.

This weekend brings the charming, quirky indie Brigsby Bear to select theaters before it expands for a wider release as the summer winds down. The movie follows a young man who tries to cope with a massive change in his life by taking solace in his love for a television show that he grew up with called Brigsby Bear Adventures. That’s really all we can tell you without spoiling an interesting turn that happens 15 minutes into the movie, something that the marketing of the movie has tried to avoid directly revealing.
If you want to know more about the story, you can read about it in our full review from the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (again, beware of spoiling a certain story point revealed early on), but if you’d rather learn more about the fictional bear at the center of the movie, then we have something you’ll want to check out below.
Brigsby Bear had its own Comic-Con panel in Hall H, which admittedly was strange placement for a movie not many people had heard about yet. Sadly, the room wasn’t full and the crowd just wasn’t in the mood to discover something new, mostly because they were all there to see their favorite shows and upcoming blockbuster movies they were excited to see. It’s a shame because Brigsby Bear is one of the best movies of the year, and if general audiences gave it a chance, they would undoubtedly fall in love with it.
Yours truly enjoyed every minute of the panel though, if only because it was clear director Dave McCary and co-writer and star Kyle Mooney, as well as producers Akiva Shaffer and Jorma Taccone (two-thirds of The Lonely Island), and more of the cast were having a good time at the panel, even if the audience didn’t exactly get what was going on. One of the coolest moments came when the actual animatronic bear from the movie was brought out to the panel, which you can see starting at the 24:58 mark here:
Along with the arrival of Brigsby Bear, there was a prototype action figure that was passed around on stage, one of the many pieces of Brigsby Bear Adventures memorabilia that can be found in the bedroom of Kyle Mooney’s character James (seriously, there are so many pieces of Brigsby Bear paraphernalia that I wanted to have for myself). The packaging artwork for the figure gives you some idea of just how intricately planned and designed this faux TV show was, which includes an entire fictional background for the titular bear.
The back of the action figure packaging reads like this (you can hear Brigsby read it himself at the 27:01 mark above):
Brigsby was born on the planet of Pundra to his bear parents Salso Bear and Puffa Bear. A smart and precocious cub, he was sent away at an early age to learn various Positive Light Enery techniques from the Great Wizard Vortep. One day, while mining for Power Crystals in the Morta Caves, Brigsby met the child twins Arielle and Nina Smiles, who were in hiding from a mysterious presence that had destroyed their home planet. They became fast friends and bonded over a love of education and Ancient Mancralli Songs.
At the dawn of the first Quest Wars, the three friends joined Starsquad Alliance, where they met the young hotshot pilot Goody Goose. Together, they were able to stop the evil Sun Snatcher from enslaving their galaxy, although he ultimately made an escape to the Mirror Dimension.
From that day forward, the comrades made a pact to stop Sun Snatcher by any means possible, while also spreading positivity, joy and love throughout the galaxy, and making new friends along the way.
We’ll have more on all the thought that went into the creation of Brigsby Bear from an interview we conducted with Dave McCary, co-writer Kevin Costello and co-star Mark Hamill next week, so stay tuned for that. If you’d like to watch the full Brigsby Bear panel from Comic-Con, check it out right here.
Brigsby Bear is playing in select theaters now and will expand in the coming weeks. Watch the trailer here.

EastEnders came out top of a list of fictional settings where characters are most likely to be victims of crime in the last 10 years.
The list was compiled by security system company ADT.
The unlucky people living in Walford had 10 times as many break-ins and fires than those in the least dangerous place – Ambridge, where BBC Radio 4 drama The Archers is set.
Researchers also compared the number of fictional fires and break-ins with the likelihood of them happening in the real-life area of the country where each soap was set and found that the BBC One programme’s location was disproportionately dangerous, with 9.5 people per 100 suffering incidents compared with London’s true figure of 3.4 per 100.
EastEnders should avoid The Queen Vic in particular as the pub is the most dangerous building in soap, having suffered nine break-ins and two fires in the last 10 years, with the damage caused estimated at £128,000.
A recent storyline saw the pub’s roof collapse and it was also the scene of soap villain Archie Mitchell’s death, when he was hit over the head with the bar’s bust of Queen Victoria.
Hollyoaks came in second place for residents needing to keep their wits about them, with 5.1 crimes per 100 people, more than Chester’s true number of 3.2 per 100.
The village may be small but has seen more than its fair share of murders, serial killers, kidnaps and arson attacks.
Emmerdale has got its crime ratio spot on for its location of Esholt in West Yorkshire, working out at 4.5 incidents per 100 people for both real-life and fiction.
Soaps may seem unrealistically dramatic, but all of the other major series actually include fewer crimes than people living in the real-life areas that they are set would expect.
River City only featured 3.6 victims of crime in every 100 people compared to Glasgow’s figure of 5.7.
Coronation Street has run high-profile storylines including murders and sexual abuse, but the crimes only amounted to 2.8 in every 100 people against Salford in Greater Manchester’s true figure of 4.2.
Welsh soap Pobol y Cwm has included 2.4 incidents per 100 residents, lagging behind Llanelli’s crime stats of 3.6.
Sleepy Ambridge is the safest place to be, where The Archers saw 0.9 victims of crime per 100 although residents of real-life location Inkberrow in the West Midlands live a more dangerous existence with 1.8 incidents per 100 people
ADT advised that many of the fictional crimes in soapland could have been avoided if characters locked their doors, checked their smoke alarms and fitted CCTV to their business premises.
With bombings in Paris and elsewhere across Europe and war in the Middle East, it’s strange to hear speculation about a fictional Russian threat, Vladimir Putin said in an exclusive interview with Le Figaro.
The Russian president, who visited Paris to meet with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, on Monday, expressed the belief that Moscow and Western capitals “all want security, peace, safety and cooperation.”
“Therefore, we should not build up tensions or invent fictional threats from Russia, some hybrid warfare etc.,” the Russian leader said.
“What is the major security problem today? Terrorism. There are bombings in Europe, in Paris, in Russia, in Belgium. There is a war in the Middle East. This is the main concern. But no, let us keep speculating on the threat from Russia.”
“You made these things up yourselves and now scare yourselves with them and even use them to plan your prospective policies. These policies have no prospects. The only possible future is in cooperation in all areas, including security issues,” he added.
Fighting international terrorism is among the issues on which Russia and the West must work together, Putin said.

Los Viajes de Guillermo (Jane the Virgin)
A cross between a Spanish-language Gulliver’s Travels and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Los Viajes de Guillermo — the latest telenovela star vehicle for the camera-hungry Rogelia De La Vega (Jaime Camil) — follows the adventures of a miniature Rogelio (who usually appears on the show’s posters against the backdrop of a giant pair of breasts).
