  • Talk of an primary challenge to President Biden has all by evaporated in recent weeks, per WaPo.
  • Earlier this year, some in the party felt despondent about the Democratic agenda in Congress.
  • Since then, Biden has had a string of legislative victories, from climate change to health care.

President Joe Biden's improved political fortunes appear to be drowning out talk of an intraparty primary challenge in 2024, according to The Washington Post.

In recent months, Biden has signed into law the Inflation Reduction Act, a $ 52 billion chips-funding bill, and bipartisan gun control legislation, breaking part of the filibuster logjam that in recent years has become increasingly common in the Senate.

Fuel prices, which surged to over $ 5 a gallon earlier this summer, are averaging around $ 3.79 nationally as of September 4, per AAA.

And a recent Wall Street Journal poll showed Biden's approval rating at 45%, a welcome sign for the White House, as the president's numbers had lagged in the high 30s and low 40s for nearly a year.

But the diminished chatter surrounding a 2024 primary challenge — at least for now — allows the White House to focus on the midterms as the president reportedly plans to launch his reelection bid after the contests.

Former President Donald Trump, who has teased a run since he left the White House, is also planning to make his 2024 plans known in the coming months. And with Trump reportedly playing a critical role in campaigning for Republicans this fall, he will continue to provide a stark contrast to the Biden White House.

Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna of California said months ago that the party needed to stick together and stop dividing itself over the minutiae of congressional legislation and instead sell what Biden has signed into law.

Some Democrats, frustrated by what they saw as inaction regarding the president's agenda, floated new potential standard bearers, which included Govs. Gavin Newsom of California and J.B. Pritzker of Illinois, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts — in addition to Vice President Kamala Harris.

But Khanna, a progressive who enjoys a strong relationship with the Biden White House, had long dismissed such talk.

"When I was out there saying I support the president's reelection six months ago, I was getting criticized, and now many other people are saying that. They're recognizing we need to stop the internal firing squad and start bragging about what we've done," he told The Post. "Most people understand the stakes of 2024 and understand that weakening Joe Biden is just strengthening Donald Trump."

"This is not the time for political opportunism of trying to do clever ploys and floating your name. This is the time for us to rally around the president's reelection," he added.

While there have been reports of some lingering concerns about Biden's age, as he will turn 82 years old shortly after Election Day 2024, he remains committed to running for reelection.

Dr. Caitlin Snow — played by new mom Danielle Panabaker — might not be cooling her heels off-screen for as long as originally planned, given that Season 7 of The Flash won’t start production until… well, who knows when?

Caitlin and her metahuman personality, Frost, were written out in Season 6’s early finale, in scenes that were filmed several episodes ahead of time to accommodate Panabaker’s maternity leave. (The original cast member announced on April 2 that she and husband Hayes Robbins had welcomed their first child.)

And while the original plan was for Caitlin to remain off-screen for Season 6’s final three episodes (as she got treated by her mother for the wound inflicted by the new Dr. Light), the fact is that Panabaker will obviously be ready to return to work by the time The Flash gets the OK to resume production, seeing as Season 7 isn’t slated to premiere until January 2021.

TVLine on May 13 asked The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace if, in light of the aforementioned new timing, Caitlin might not ride the bench as long as planned. He said, “We’re in discussions about that right now” — though, as we suggested, it may almost be harder to write Caitlin and the superpowered Frost back in, having already written scripts that had Barry & Co. making do in her absence.

“It is tricky,” Wallace concurred. “But I think there is a happy medium which we’re going to try to accomplish. We have to see.”

Reconsidering those three episodes, the last of which would have served as Season 6’s actual finale, is but one of the challenges facing The CW’s No. 1 series as TV productions ponder how to safely, eventually emerge from the pandemic shutdown.

“First of all, how do we shoot these episodes? How do we shoot a season finale of The Flash, which is a big show with a lot of stuff going on, given the new world that were in?,” asked Wallace. Secondly, he noted, “Cisco went off to Atlantis” (but would have been back by the finale) “and Caitlin and Frost went off to the Tannhauser arctic site…. Those stories ended in a specific way, so how do we change that, or at least deal with it now that those episodes aren’t a part of Season 6?

“We have a little bit more breathing room,” the EP added, “and I think that’s going to be fun to play with.”

Eve Baxter’s visits from Air Force Academy will be few and far between when Last Man Standing returns for Season 8.

The Tim Allen comedy is poised to include less appearances by Kaitlyn Dever, whose star has risen exponentially in 2019 thanks to leading roles in the feature film Booksmart and the Netflix miniseries Unbelievable — the latter of which earned the actress her first Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award nominations (as well as a three-way tie for TVLine’s Performer of the Year, along with costars Merritt Wever and Toni Collette).

“She’s a star, and we’ve always known that,” exec producer Kevin Abbott tells TVLine. “She’s a phenomenal talent, and nobody deserves all of these accolades more than she does. She’s just so gifted and such a wonderful, genuine person. With that being said, yes, she is just crazy busy.”

Dever was an original cast member when Last Man first premiered in 2011, but did not return as a series regular when the show made the leap to Fox in 2018, one year after it was cancelled by ABC. All told, she appeared in just seven of the first revival season’s 22 episodes.

Last Man is well into production on Season 8, with 14 out of 22 episodes in the can ahead of its winter premiere. Of those first 14, Dever will only appear in the Jan. 2 opener. “She hasn’t been back unfortunately, but everyone talks to her,” Abbott says. “We like to get her on for a few episodes each season because she’s a part of our family, and she works really hard to do that.

“We’re in a mode of trying to get her in this next cycle of three [episodes], to get her even for a couple of days if we can,” Abbott continues. “But we may have to wait until February to shoot her in another episode just because she’s got all of the press that she has to do [throughout awards season].”

As previously reported, Last Man Standing Season 8 will kick off with three weeks of back-to-back originals, beginning Thursday, Jan. 2 at 8/7c, on Fox. Then, starting Thursday, Jan. 23, it will scale back to one episode per week (when it is paired with the new Jason Biggs/Maggie Lawson comedy Outmatched) and run straight through May without a single repeat.

I was never that into LEGOs as a child – I didn’t have the patience to deal with so many pieces. I was a fan of Playmobil figures, though – a kind of LEGO knock-off that required very little assembly. Despite my childhood affection for the brand, I can’t say I was chomping at the bit for a Playmobil movie, but here we are.

Featuring the voices of Anya Taylor-Joy, Gabriel Bateman, Daniel Radcliffe, Jim Gaffigan, Meghan Trainor, and Adam Lambert, it’s clear that Playmobil: The Movie is trying to cash-in on the popularity of The LEGO Movie and its various spin-offs and sequels. Rather than lift the LEGO Movie plot, Playmobil: The Movie is instead borrowing from Pleasantville, telling the story about two siblings from the real world sucked into a fantastical world where they’re out of their element. Here’s the synopsis:

When her younger brother Charlie (Gabriel Bateman) unexpectedly disappears into the magical, animated universe of PLAYMOBIL®, unprepared Marla (Anya Taylor-Joy) must go on a quest of a lifetime to bring him home. As she sets off on a fantastic journey across stunning new worlds, Marla teams up with some unlikely and heroic new friends – the smooth-talking food truck driver Del (Jim Gaffigan), the dashing and charismatic secret agent Rex Dasher (Daniel Radcliffe), a wholehearted misfit robot, an extravagant fairy-godmother (Meghan Trainor) and many more. Through their vibrant adventure, Marla and Charlie realize that no matter how life plays out, you can achieve anything when you believe in yourself!

It’s pretty clear that Playmobil: The Movie is skewing to a young audience – younger even than the intended audience of The LEGO Movie. And while this may seem like a cynical cash-grab, many people felt the same way before the first LEGO Movie came out, until the final results proved to be surprisingly enjoyable. Maybe Playmobil will manage to do the same. Stranger things have happened.

FIFA’s Head of Sustainability and Diversity Federico Addiechi has urged broadcasters to show less cutaways of beautiful women in the stands as part of efforts to tackle sexism in football.

The world football governing body wants to get a more respectful image of female fans attending games as issues of sexual harassment during the World Cup were raised at FIFA media briefing on Wednesday.

FARE (Football Against Racism in Europe) network which works in close cooperation with FIFA and monitors fans behavior at World Cup games said it documented more than 30 cases of women being “accosted in the streets” during the month-long tournament in Russia.

Half of the reported incidents included female broadcasters being harassed while on air.

Addiechi said that FIFA will ask national broadcasters to stop zooming in on attractive women in stadiums to prevent potential ‘sexist’ incidents.

While racism was named Russia’s most problematic issue before the World Cup, no discriminative cases have been reported so far, said Piara Powar FARE executive director who praised the hosts of the tournament for giving a warm welcome to international guests.

“The Russian people played a magnificent role in making people feel welcome,” Powar said. “There were no issues to report on Russians inside stadiums. We hope that this World Cup will have a long-term impact on Russian society.”

“The Russian state together with the Russian Football Union did quite a lot of work in terms of ruling off individuals that there were concerns about. A number of individuals were denied their FAN IDs. All this combined led to quite a good tournament,” he added.
