Facebook has certainly dabbled in live sports streams before, but it appears ready to jump in with both feet. Sources for Sports Business Journal claim that Facebook is hiring an executive to negotiate sports deals, and that the eventual recruit will have a budget worth a “few billion dollars.” That money wouldn’t stretch far in the conventional TV world, as Recode observes. However, that represents a gigantic pile of cash for internet-only deals. Amazon paid $ 50 million for Thursday night NFL games, so Facebook might score access to major games even if sports leagues hold out for large payments (such as an attempted $ 600 million bid on Indian cricket).

We’ve asked Facebook if it can comment.

There’s no guarantee Facebook will become a big spender in the near future, but it wouldn’t be at all shocking if the company opens its wallet. Sports streaming is a battleground for social networks competing for your attention, and Facebook likely doesn’t want to risk losing an important livestreaming deal to Twitter. Whatever money Facebook spends now might be easily justified if it keeps your eyes glued to Facebook and viewing those all-important ads.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn launched a scathing attack on “greedy” Morgan Stanley after it said a government under his leadership would be more damaging to financial markets than Brexit. He said Labour is indeed a threat, but only to the few.

In a video posted on his official YouTube channel, Corbyn fumes at banks like Morgan Stanley, who he says think they “run our country” because the political party looking after them, the Tories, are in government.

He accused the US investment bank of being among those responsible for the financial crisis in 2008, for which the public are “still paying the price” because of the “unnecessary and deeply damaging” Tory austerity policies introduced thereafter.

“These are the same speculators and gamblers who crashed our economy in 2008. And then we had to bail them out,” Corbyn said.

Pointing to the Conservatives’ tight fiscal programs, he continued: “That’s meant a crisis in our public services, falling wages and the longest decline in living standards for over 60 years.

“Nurses, teachers, shopworkers, builders, just about everyone is finding it harder to get by, while Morgan Stanley’s CEO paid himself £21.5 million last year and UK banks paid out £15 billion in bonuses.

“Labour is a growing movement of well-over half-a-million members and a government in waiting that will work for the many. So when they say we’re a threat, they’re right.

“We’re a threat to a damaging and failed system that’s rigged for the few.”

Morgan Stanley last week said a Labour government under Corbyn would be more damaging to the UK than a hard Brexit. The socialist leader wants to renationalize large sectors of the British economy and the nation’s infrastructure, including water, utilities and railways.

As Prime Minister Theresa May’s government has collapsed in the polls, the bank warned investors there is a two-thirds likelihood of Britain facing yet another general election, and of the “radical” policy shift if Corbyn makes it into Downing Street.

It called on fund managers to draft contingency plans in case the ‘red menace’ manages to push through his manifesto.

“From a UK investor perspective, we believe that the domestic political situation is at least as significant as Brexit, given the fragile state of the current government and the perceived risks of an incoming Labour administration that could potentially embark on a radical change in policy direction,” it said.

Video game movies tend to struggle in part because of their stories. What sounds good for an adventure or first-person shooter can fall flat when you’re asked to construct a cinematic narrative around it. However, you might get something better this time around. Variety has learned that We Happy Few, Compulsion Games’ paranoia-fueled tale of an English town gone terribly wrong, is becoming a movie. The company behind the Pitch Perfect movies, Gold Circle Entertainment, is working with dj2 Entertainment (also working on the Sleeping Dogs movie) to make it a reality.

There’s still a lot up in the air. The team doesn’t even have writers, let alone a cast. Compulsion believes the producers have good ideas for maintaining the “menace, dark humor and central themes” of the survival horror title, however, and dj2 says it’ll stay “true to the source material” while including a few surprises.

There’s good reason to be skeptical, since game-based movies only rarely get top-flight screenwriting and acting talent. However, We Happy Few at least has a concept that’s well-suited to the big screen. Its alternate history plot, where people are forced to take a mind-altering drug to hide a sinister truth, shares something common with popular movies that revolve around the “town with a dark secret” premise — think The Wicker Man or even Hot Fuzz. That’s a good platform to build on, then. The big challenge is evoking the spirit of those classics without either being overly derivative or diluting what makes the game special.

There are just “a few months” left before mass starvation, Stanforth said, appealing to the international community to “wake up to the crisis” and act promptly, addressing both the urgently needed ceasefire and the plight of the population.

“We actually spoke to 2,000 people just before Christmas and nine out of 10 of them said that they’ve no longer got any food. There were some horrible stories. One person said he was going to try and sell his kidney as he hadn’t got any money for food. When you leave your home, when you flee, you’ve got nothing left basically. There’s no more job, you leave your farms. It’s a horrible situation,” Stanforth said. “I speak to colleagues on a daily basis, and even they are struggling to get by.”

“The Saudi-led coalition has been bombing Yemen for two years now, and we’ve seen 50,000 casualties, several thousand deaths including many, many children. That’s forced over 3 million people to leave their homes,” Stanforth said.

Describing the dire situation in the war-ravaged country, the Oxfam adviser added that “in addition” to the coalition airstrikes, “there are fighters on the ground who have killed many people, and also stopped aid agencies like [Oxfam] from delivering aid,” including some cases when aid workers have been detained.

“Some of the international backers of the Saudi-led coalition have been blockading the country, they’ve been stopping food and other supplies from getting into Yemen’s ports,” he added.

“Everybody involved [in the Yemen conflict] is at fault, all parties. Yemenis themselves are at fault, as they are thinking more about the fighting and their military gains, and their attacks on ports and other places are stopping aid. And then all the international backers, they are at fault as well. They are not allowing aid through like it should come, and they are also bombing the country, they are starving Yemen,” Stanforth said, adding that the situation is “heartbreaking.”

“It’s startling that we’ve got so little funding when the crisis is the world’s largest,” Stanforth said, criticizing the international community for the “lack of urgency” in regard to the situation in Yemen.

Over $ 2 billion are needed “right now” for aid efforts in the war-torn country, the Oxfam adviser said, adding that governments around the world have only given 7 percent of the aid that’s needed.

Having praised Russia’s and France’s recent efforts in the UN Security Council for “coming out and pressing for an immediate ceasefire,” the Oxfam adviser at the same time criticized some of the western countries’ policy in regard to the crisis in Yemen.

“It’s really urgent that a solution is found, that peace is found, that governments stop selling weapons, they have to stop selling weapons to the different parties in the conflict. The US, the UK for example – the UK has given over $ 3.3 billion of arms to Saudi Arabia, and that’s being used to bomb Yemen and many people have died as a result,” Stanforth said. 

What is making the situation even worse is that there is a lack of awareness of the Yemeni crisis internationally.

“There is a problem because journalists are being refused entry to Yemen, and that means you don’t get stories in the news like we should have… We need journalists to be allowed in, just like aid workers need to be allowed in. We need to be able to take photos, so people can just see how awful the situation is,” the Oxfam adviser told RT.
