The Masked Singer is getting all dolled up for Season 5 — and here’s a sneak peek performance to prove it.
One of the competitors in the upcoming season of Fox’s bizarre singing competition is Russian Doll, whose costume only allows for the most minimal of movements — a marionette-style mouth with a lower jaw that opens and closes.

You can get a good look at the… innovative new Masked Singer entry via the full performance below, which Fox released Tuesday. In the clip, Russian Doll and a friend perform “Shallow,” the Grammy- and Oscar-winning Lady Gaga-Bradley Cooper ballad. (You truly have not lived until you’ve seen that little mouth flap up and down to all the “la-la-laaaa”s.)

In addition to the previously announced addition of wildcard contestants in this season’s gameplay, Fox on Tuesday also introduced Cluedle-Doo (as seen below), a giant rooster who’ll mess with the judges and offer new clues about the players’ identities.

The Masked Singer Season 5 Cluedle-Doo

The Masked Singer returns for Season 5 on Wednesday, March 10 at 8/7c. Niecy Nash (Claws) will guest-host the first few episodes, as a result of regular emcee Nick Cannon testing positive for COVID-19 in early February.

Press PLAY on the video below to watch Russian Doll, then hit the comments with your early guesses!

Curling season reaches fever pitch as Scotties, Brier approach https://briefnews.eu/curling-season-reaches-fever-pitch-as-scotties-brier-approach/ https://briefnews.eu/curling-season-reaches-fever-pitch-as-scotties-brier-approach/#respond Thu, 10 Jan 2019 12:26:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/curling-season-reaches-fever-pitch-as-scotties-brier-approach/ If the first half of the curling season is any indication of what's to come in the following months, then buckle up.

It appears the level of curling is the highest it's ever been. Many of the games are being decided by the smallest of margins as curling continues to evolve and grow. Parity is also at an all-time high. On any given day and on any given sheet, these top teams can find a way to win.

This week the top 16 men's and women's teams from around the world are in North Battleford, Sask., taking part in the Grand Slam of curling's Meridian Canadian Open. It's the fifth stop on the Slam Tour this season, and for the Canadian teams it's the last real tune-up before provincial playdowns to qualify for the men's and women's national championships.

Many of the curlers on the ice this week have raised their intensity level as the pressure continues to build —January marks the sprint to the finish with the big curling prizes creeping into focus.

The Scotties will be played in just over a month in Sydney, N.S. That's followed by the Brier in Brandon, Man., at the beginning of March. The winning teams will then represent Canada at the respective world championships. Teams will use this week as a last chance to tinker with lineups, techniques and strategy before locking it in heading into provincials.

Triple knockout

The Canadian Open has a unique format different from most bonspiels fans would be used to watching. Rather than round-robin pool play that puts the top teams into the playoff round, this week it's a triple knockout format.

Essentially teams want to win three games before they lose three games in order to clinch a spot into the playoffs. For instance, if a team wins its first three games, they automatically qualify on the A side and will get a full day of rest.

On the flip side, should a team follow a win-lose-win-lose scenario, the journey to the playoffs gets a lot longer. That final game would then become a do-or-die situation to remain in the tournament.

In total, two A teams (3-0) qualify, three B teams (2-1) qualify and three C teams (3-2) qualify for the playoffs.

The quarter-finals are slated for Saturday morning with the semis being played later that night. The men's championship goes Sunday morning with the women's final being played on Sunday afternoon.

World curling supremacy

Coming into the Slam event the world rankings are extremely close. Kevin Koe and Rachel Homan — Canada's two Olympic representatives one year ago — are the top teams in the world right now.

Following Koe on the men's side are Nik Edin, Bruce Mouat, Brad Jacobs and Brad Gushue to round out the top five. On the women's side, Anna Hassselborg, Jennifer Jones, Kerri Einarson and Silvana Tirinzoni follow Homan.

Teams are also trying to secure valuable Pinty's Cup points this week. Each Slam points are up for grabs and tallied up throughout the season. There is a men's and women's Pinty's Cup champion crowned after the last event of the year with a cash prize of $ 75,000. Gushue and Jones are the defending Pinty's Cup champions.

Manifest Recap: Sunday Flight Fever https://briefnews.eu/manifest-recap-sunday-flight-fever/ https://briefnews.eu/manifest-recap-sunday-flight-fever/#respond Tue, 06 Nov 2018 07:12:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/manifest-recap-sunday-flight-fever/

Manifest returned from its Wicked break to deliver a close facsimile of the episode I’ve been waiting for, as it sorta put a face to the enigmatic entity (literally) operating in the shadows, while also answering the big question of: What if Ben and Michaela came clean to loved ones about their loopy new existence?

When Cal suddenly develops a nasty fever, he begins spouting a phrase in what most of us later learn is Bulgarian, mixed in with the occasional English reference to a fearsome “red door.” As luck would have it, Saanvi was within earshot of the Bulgarian Flight 828 passenger who said the phrase on board the plane. Did Cal merely overhear it at the time, or is something deeper at play?

Wisely suspecting the latter, Ben sets out to find Marko, the Bulgarian, who to date has been MIA since the flight landed. In fact, Marko is one of nearly a dozen passengers Ben has been unable to track down. Michaela takes a “personal day” (triggering Jared’s eye roll) to help investigate, speaking with the passenger, Anna, who helped translate Marko’s question about a customs form. Anna says she last saw Marko boarding one of five government buses leaving the hangar — and yet all official paperwork only accounts for four buses.

As Michaela chases that lead, in the name of curing Cal, Grace confronts Ben about what is really going on. He confesses that “something happened to us on that flight, and it keeps happening.” And as such, he believes Cal’s fever may be tied into the larger plane mystery.  Grace reminds Ben that went down a rabbit hole like this the last time Cal got sick — he shut her out, and then she shut him out. Grace wants things to be different this time, for them to be partners. She also wants them on the same page, so he needs to stop being a scientist and be a father.

Judging by where the mysterious Bus No. 5 fell off the grid, Michaela susses out some possible remote ,locations where it may have been headed. And she brings Jared with. Upon finding a farmhouse with a conspicuous guardhouse — and armed guards, whose interest they draw — they fake a flat tire, then go about their business, while Mick snaps a photo of some people passing through a (you guessed it) red door. Afterward, having just stumbled upon a well-fortified black site, Jared demands that his ex come clean about what’s what, and she does — case-cracking “voices” and all. She suggests that the Flight 828 passengers have been given “a puzzle to solve,” and Jared hears her out.

Meanwhile as Cal’s fever spikes again and again, we see in quick cutaways that he is “in sync” with a grueling experience that Marko is enduring, at the hands of some  scientists. Indeed, Marko and the other bus passengers are being held and experimented on inside the farmhouse. Determined to find Marko, Ben gets himself some face time with NSA Agent Vance, lobbing the photo that Michaela took of a missing passenger, Lena, outside the remote farmhouse. Vance and his men, though, seem to be seeing this for the very first time. So they are of little help. After Ben stomps away, Vance looks up Lena’s file and sees that the “official” account of her current whereabouts — Norway — in no way matches up with Michaela’s photo.

Later, when the ominous farmhouse operation realizes it needs to pack up and relocate, the agonizing procedure on Marko is terminated — and Cal returns to his 98.6-degree self. We then see one of the scientists who had been working on Marko report into his boss over telephone, assuring “ma’am” that their operation will be back up and running soon enough. Vance and his men meanwhile arrive at the near-perfectly vacated farmhouse… save for a stray, fresh Band-Aid from Marko’s arm. At the hospital, Ben, Mick and Saanvi chalk up whatever wound up saving Cal as a “win,” after which Ben sets his sights on a new target: Unified Dynamic Systems, a conglomerate that seems to be far too vested in the missing passengers.

The disappearance and death of journalist and Saudi critic Jamal Khashoggi has thrust Saudi Arabia back into a global spotlight that centers directly on the Kingdom’s troubled human-rights record.

And because Khashoggi once enjoyed a level of proximity to the Saudi royal court, he was particularly outspoken about the Saudi leadership’s worst impulses and its aversion to dissent.

Khashoggi was last seen alive on surveillance video captured October 2 outside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. He had arrived to retrieve documentation for a planned wedding to his Turkish fiancée Hatice Cengiz. Despite implications that suggest Khashoggi was targeted and killed by his own government, the Saudis have asserted that he died in a physical struggle with Saudi agents, not long after he entered the consulate.

During the early morning hours of October 20 local time in Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom announced its official admission that Khashoggi is dead. The matter did fresh damage to Saudi Arabia’s credibility, in part because the Kingdom had floated conflicting explanations about Khashoggi’s fate for nearly three weeks.

The incident has sparked a global outcry. Some US lawmakers have called for sanctions against Saudi Arabia, while government leaders, companies and private investors have pulled away from the Kingdom until more is known about the circumstances of Khashoggi’s death.

But Saudi Arabia has faced criticism for human-rights abuses in the past.

The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen has led to the deaths of thousands of civilians. The Kingdom has been implicated as a sponsor of terrorist organizations, it has been accused of playing a role in some of the worst terror attacks in history, and its practice of jailing and publicly punishing activists has brought it to the brink of diplomatic crisis.

Here are all the atrocities Saudi Arabia committed long before the outrage over Jamal Khashoggi’s death began.

Funding global terrorism

Associated Press

Perhaps most notably, the Saudi government is believed to be linked to the September 11, 2001 attacks on the US.

Fifteen of the 19 hijackers aboard commercial flights that either crashed or flew into the World Trade Center towers in New York were Saudi citizens, and the plot was orchestrated by al-Qaida leader Osama Bin Laden, who was the son of a prominent Saudi millionaire construction magnate with close ties to the Saudi royal family.

In 2016, a report on the attacks by the Joint Inquiry into Intelligence Community Activities found that some of the hijackers received assistance and financial support from individuals connected to the Saudi government, including members of the royal family.

Leaked diplomatic cables reveal deep connections between Saudi Arabia and global terror groups.

In 2010, then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned that Saudi Arabia remained “a critical financial support base” for some Islamist terror organizations, including Al-Qaida and the Taliban.

“Donors in Saudi Arabia constitute the most significant source of funding to Sunni terrorist groups worldwide,” Clinton said.

In this respect, funding for terror groups happens indirectly, partly funneled via donors who set up front companies to receive money from government-sanctioned charities.

According to another leaked cable, the US intelligence community suggested that one of the largest Islamic terror groups in Asia, Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LT), may have leaned on a person connected to an alias of Lashkar-e-Tayyiba called Jamaat-ud-Dawah (JUD).

According to the US State Department cable, the JUD official “forwarded JUD donation receipts to a probable LT front company in Saudi Arabia.” An LT official there is believed to have “acted as a front for moving LT funds,” the cable said, citing intelligence reporting.

Lashkar-e-Tayyiba was behind the 2008 terror attack in Mumbai, India, a series of 12 coordinated shooting and bombing attacks across Mumbai that killed 172 people and injured many more.

According to one of the cables, Clinton credited the Saudi capital of Riyadh for its “increasingly aggressive efforts to disrupt al-Qa’ida’s access to funding from Saudi sources,” but said the country had “taken only limited action to disrupt fundraising” for the Taliban and Lashkar-e-Tayyiba.

Restricting freedom of speech and independent media

Saudi Arabia has consistently ranked low on press freedom indexes, and currently ranks 169th out of 180 countries in the 2018 World Press Freedom Index.

Saudi Arabia does not allow any independent media, and it attempts to censor its citizens online and offline.

Journalists there are subjected to scrutiny, and language deemed critical of the government can lead to detention under the country’s counterterrorism laws. Journalists also face the threat of public punishment and even death.

In 2012, Saudi blogger Raif Badawi was charged with “violating Islamic values and propagating liberal thought,” and sentenced to 10 years in prison, 1,000 lashes, and fined 1 million Riyals, which amounts to about $ 266,000, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom said.

In August, Saudi Arabia contemplated a death sentence for activist Israa al-Ghomgham, who documented political demonstrations in the country’s Eastern Province.

She could face execution by sword, and her final hearing is set for October 28.

And the Saudi activist Omar Abdulaziz, a 27-year-old Canadian political refugee who hosts a satirical news show, told Business Insider in August that Saudi authorities arrested members of his family back home to pressure him into ending his program, which is often critical of the Saudi royal family.

Saudi agents even bugged his phone and tracked his movements in an effort to intimidate him.

Jailing human-rights activists

Saudi Arabia has been known to detain human-rights activists, sometimes without formally charging them with a crime. Some of these detentions are kept secret.

Earlier this year, Saudi Arabia arrested scores of activists — most of whom had campaigned ahead of an official rule change that allowed women to drive.

Some of the activists said the arrests were an attempt by Saudi leadership to stifle dissent and silence anyone who may seek to take credit for the Kingdom’s decision to lift the ban.

The award-winning women’s rights campaigner Samar Badawi was among those who were arrested. She is best-known for challenging the country’s restrictive male guardianship laws, which prevent women from traveling, studying, or making important life choices without a man’s permission.

Badawi is the sister of jailed activist Raif Badawi. She had previously been detained for her advocacy and was banned from traveling. Her arrest prompted a concerned tweet from Canada’s foreign ministry, which asked Saudi Arabia to “immediately release” her and the other activists.

That move led to swift diplomatic retaliation from Saudi Arabia.

The Kingdom expelled Canada’s ambassador. It froze new trade, suspended flights, recalled thousands of students, barred its citizens from receiving medical care in Canada, and began dumping Canada’s assets.

‘Remain vigilant!’ Deadly Rift Valley Fever could cause health emergency – virus symptoms https://briefnews.eu/remain-vigilant-deadly-rift-valley-fever-could-cause-health-emergency-virus-symptoms/ https://briefnews.eu/remain-vigilant-deadly-rift-valley-fever-could-cause-health-emergency-virus-symptoms/#respond Tue, 07 Aug 2018 03:43:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/remain-vigilant-deadly-rift-valley-fever-could-cause-health-emergency-virus-symptoms/

Rift Valley Fever (RVF) is a viral disease that infects both humans and animals, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

It’s regarded as a ‘priority disease’ for the WHO, given its potential to cause a public health emergency.

Since the year 2000, about 1,000 people have died of the virus. All of the reported deaths were in Africa.

But, the UK could be at risk of Rift Valley Fever, according to Dr Gianni Lo Iacono, from the University of Surrey.

As the climate changes around the world, the virus could crop up in new areas, he said.

“[It’s] is a very important point,” Lo Iacono told Express.co.uk. “We definitely need to be aware of the risk, especially because of the expected change in the climate.

“The problem should not be underestimated, and Rift Valley Fever is on the list of priority diseases for the WHO given its potential to cause a public health emergency, and the absence of efficacious drugs and/or vaccines.

“The main lesson is to remain vigilant.”

The Zika virus is a good example of how climate change can spread diseases to new parts of the world, said Lo Iacano.

“[Zika] is also spread by insects and was considered a minor pathogen when first identified in Uganda in 1947,” he said.

“The first large outbreak of disease caused by Zika infection was reported from the Island of Yap in 2007.

“There are currently several countries worldwide experiencing Zika virus outbreaks.”

But, if RVF were to reach the UK, it’s unlikely to be high risk, added Lo Iacono.

Any country that has strong measures to prevent a spread wouldn’t be high risk, he said. That could include mosquito nets to protect against the virus spreading from mosquito bites.

Still, it’s crucial to be aware of the signs and symptoms of RVF, he added.

During its early stages, the virus’ symptoms are a flu-like fever, headaches, and a sensitivity to light.

Some patients may develop a stiff neck or lose their appetite, said the WHO.

Most human cases are mild, and signs of the virus will only last for up to a week. But, on rare occasions, it can develop into a severe infection.

Severe RVF symptoms include permanent loss of vision, hallucinations, coma, vomiting blood and a purpuric rash.

Patients developing a haemorrhagic fever form of RVF – one of the most serious forms of the infection – leads to death in half of the total cases.

Death usually occurs between three and six days after symptoms begin, added the WHO.

Even the World Cup couldn’t escape the ‘Fortnite’ fever https://briefnews.eu/even-the-world-cup-couldnt-escape-the-fortnite-fever/ https://briefnews.eu/even-the-world-cup-couldnt-escape-the-fortnite-fever/#respond Sat, 14 Jul 2018 14:28:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/even-the-world-cup-couldnt-escape-the-fortnite-fever/

Now that England is out of the 2018 World Cup, there’s one thing we’re really going to miss about its team: The goal celebrations from midfielders Dele Alli and Jesse Lingard. While professional athletes creatively expressing themselves after scoring is nothing new, these guys stood out because their quirky moves were inspired by none other than Fortnite. Best of all, they did it at the world’s biggest sporting event. Fortnite’s mark on the World Cup in Russia is just the latest example of how inescapable the Epic Games’ survival title is.

Last month, BBC reported on how essential Fortnite was to keeping members of the England World Cup squad entertained during their downtime. Striker Harry Kane, who scored six goals during the tournament, told the publication that other than putting balls in the net, Fortnite was the other thing he really enjoyed doing in Russia. And let’s be real: If you’re going to form a deep bond with your bros, there are few better ways to do that than testing their Battle Royale skills.

We only wish Kane would’ve busted out a “Ride the Pony” (Alli) or “Hype” dance (Lingard), but maybe he likes to keep those behind closed doors. Alli and Lingard weren’t the only players at the 2018 World Cup who celebrated in Fortnite style though. France’s Antoine Griezmann, who will be playing in the event’s final match against Croatia (the team that eliminated England), is also a fan of the game. Every time he scores, he celebrates by doing the “Take the L” dance, which is probably pretty annoying for the opposition and their fans to witness.

It’s worth noting that while some of these moves didn’t originate from Fortnite, it is the game’s unlockable Emotes that have given them a larger cultural reach. There’s even a Floss one that Alli has done for his English club, Tottenham Spurs.

Jesse Lingard’s “Hype” dance against Panama

And for the last act, here’s Griezmann, who will be hoping to make Croatia “Take the L” tomorrow in the 2018 World Cup Final.

How to sleep if you have hay fever: Keep symptoms at bay by avoiding this drink https://briefnews.eu/how-to-sleep-if-you-have-hay-fever-keep-symptoms-at-bay-by-avoiding-this-drink/ https://briefnews.eu/how-to-sleep-if-you-have-hay-fever-keep-symptoms-at-bay-by-avoiding-this-drink/#respond Wed, 04 Jul 2018 22:57:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-to-sleep-if-you-have-hay-fever-keep-symptoms-at-bay-by-avoiding-this-drink/

Sleep is important for every day bodily function. Not getting enough can have a detrimental effect on a person’s health.

Recurring poor sleep can put you at risk of serious medical conditions such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes, according to the NHS.

Hay fever sufferers have been having another tough week this week after the Met Office warned a “very high” pollen count would continue to sweep across the UK this week.

But hay fever symptoms, including sneezing and coughing, itchy eyes and an itchy throat, can make getting to sleep difficult for hay fever sufferers.

Hay fever symptoms can worsen before bedtime and affect sufferers while they keep because pollen in the air settles.

So what can hay fever sufferers do to help get a better night’s rest? Dr Pixie McKenna has revealed her top tips.

Dr McKenna said: “While we all look forward to the summer months, one thing that plagues many of us is hay fever. Not only is pollen a nuisance during the day, sleepless nights are a common side effect of a high pollen count.

“But, there are a few tricks which you can to do to stop pollen from settling in your room, and make sure you still get the rest you need during these months.”

The first thing to do to help get your much needed forty-winks is to cut down on alcohol.

Beer, wine and spirits contain histamine, which is the chemical that sets off allergy symptoms in your body.

Dr McKenna explained: “As well as making you more sensitive to pollen, alcohol also dehydrates you which can make your hay fever symptoms seem worse. So be sure to drink plenty of water, even at those summer barbeques.”

Keep your windows shut

It’s easier said than done, especially on a hot summer’s night, but it’s important to keep your windows closed at night to ensure you keep the pollen out of your room, advised Dr McKenna.

She added: “If you’re feeling hot, try placing some ice-cold bottles of water on your bed-side table which you can use if you wake up during the night. You could also pop you pillow case in the freezer just before you go to bed, so you have something cool to lie on.”

Keep laundry inside

Dr McKenna said: “It’s tempting to hang your bedding outside to dry during the summer months, but this can cause your pillow cases and duvets to become infused with pollen. If possible, use a tumble dryer, or else hang your bedding up inside to dry.

“It’s also important to wash and change your bedding regularly as this helps to remove traces of pollen which can hang about – plus fresh bedding is great for helping you sleep better.”

Shower before going to bed

Having a shower or bath before you go to bed will wash any stray pollen from your hair or skin which may aggravate your symptoms overnight.

Dr McKenna explained: “A steamy shower will also help clear your sinuses which will make falling asleep easier. Try a shower gel with eucalyptus too – it is a natural way to clear your sinuses, as well as helping soothe throats.”

The power of Vaseline

Vaseline, or any other petroleum jelly, is not just for your lips, according to Dr McKenna.

She said: “Once you’ve brushed your teeth and washed your face, try placing a small smear of Vaseline under your nose to trap any pollen while you’re sleeping.”

If you struggle to get to sleep at night because of the heat, you should try making some simple adjustments to your sleep environment.

Britons that NEVER had hay fever are falling victim due to the heatwave

And one forecast says it could last until the middle of next month.

Inquiries about hay fever – or allergic rhinitis – to the NHS website are up by 43 per cent this June compared with the same period last year.

Allergy UK said it has seen a big spike in email inquiries or calls to its helpline because the hot spell has coincided with the peak of the grass pollen season.

Grass pollen affects about 80 per cent of the UK’s 12 million hay fever sufferers.

Allergy UK Nurse Adviser Holly Shaw said: “This year we are getting more reports of people suffering from hay fever for the first time in years, or even for the first time ever.

“While it is more common for hay fever to develop in childhood, it is not uncommon for people to develop it as adults.”

The Met Office, which works with the University of Worcester’s National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit to predict pollen counts, said only northern Scotland was escaping the highest levels.

The current forecast says: “The grass pollen risk will be very high during warm, dry weather. Spore and weed levels will be elevated too.”

A Met Office spokesman said: “We are at the peak of the grass season and pollen levels are particularly high because we have not had any rain. Rain washes pollen out of the air column.

“But when you have high pressure, as we do at the moment, the pollen builds up in the lower layers of the atmosphere so there’s a cumulative effect.

“We have had warm, dry weather for a good number of weeks. If we had one or two big fronts of rain pushing across the UK it would make a dramatic difference.

“But apart from a few possible showers in the South on Sunday, we do not expect significant rain before the middle of next week so there is no significant relief in sight.”

The National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit forecast for this week says: “Very high grass pollen will continue this week during warm, sunny weather across the country.

“The season is expected to last into the first week of July in southern and central regions and into mid or late July in the far North of England and Scotland.”

At the same time there are also high levels of fungal spores and weed pollen, particularly nettle pollen, which can all cause hay fever.

The only good news is that tree pollen is now only at moderate levels, mainly because its peak was in late winter and spring.

Hay fever can feel like flu, causing sneezing and coughing, a runny or blocked nose, itchy, red or watery eyes, itchy throat, mouth, nose and ears, loss of smell, headaches and earaches, and make sufferers feel very tired.

The NHS said that hay fever can also make asthma sufferers short of breath, wheeze and cough and give them a tight feeling in their chest.

Its website says: “There’s currently no cure for hay fever and you can’t prevent it.

“But you can do things to ease your symptoms when the pollen count is high.”

Tips include putting Vaseline around your nostrils to trap pollen, wearing wraparound sunglasses to stop pollen getting in your eyes, vacuuming regularly and dusting with a damp cloth.

The NHS also recommends seeing a pharmacist, who can provide antihistamine drops, tablets and nasal sprays.

—————————————————————————————————–

Analysis by Holly Shaw

Hay fever is particularly bad at the moment thanks to the long period of hot, dry weather coinciding with the peak of the grass pollen season.

Allergic rhinitis affects one in five people – 12 million in the UK – and grass pollen affects about 80 per cent of them.

Hay fever cases have trebled in the past 20 years and this year there has been a spike in calls to our helpline.

For most people hay fever means uncomfortable symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing and watery, itchy eyes, and it can significantly affect quality of life and school performance.

But the greatest concern is for people with both hay fever and asthma.

If hay fever symptoms are not well managed, they can cause significant breathing problems and exacerbate asthma.

Hay fever is caused when the body makes antibodies in response to substances, such as pollen particles, that are breathed in.

In people sensitive to these allergens, this causes the release of chemicals from cells in nasal passages, the eyes or airways.

If you think you have hay fever, the important thing is to visit a GP or a pharmacist and confirm that your symptoms are hay fever rather than, say, a cold.

Then you can get appropriate medicine.

If you have been outside, it is worth getting changed and having a shower because pollen is very sticky and can be on your hair and clothes.

You can also transfer it to your pillows.

Bear in mind that during the day pollen rises in the atmosphere but drops down overnight in a “pollen shower” – so the high spots are in the evening, overnight and first thing.

So it is better to shut your windows at night to keep out the pollen.

Call our helpline on 01322 619 898 during office hours, or email info@allergyuk.org.
