The elusive world-famous British street artist Banksy has reportedly pulled off one of the greatest art heists, allowing his own painting to self-destruct, just moments after ‘Girl with a Balloon’ had fetched over £1mn at auction.

Art lovers and collectors appeared shocked the moment Banksy’s Girl with a Balloon shredded itself into ribbons immediately after hammering a record of £860,000 (£1.04mn or $ 1.37mn with buyer’s premium) at a Contemporary Art Evening Auction at Sotheby’s London on Friday.

The 101cm-by-78 cm canvas in an artist’s frame, annihilated in front of the auctioneers by a mechanism apparently hidden within the base of the frame, with just strips left to admire from the 2006 masterpiece produced by the famous-yet-anonymous British artist.

Attendees at the event appeared to be in “complete confusion” the moment an “alarm inside the frame started going off as the gavel went down,” Robert Casterline of Casterline Goodman gallery told Hyperallergic.

While some tried to figure out what just happened, others reportedly noticed an elusive man dressed in black sporting sunglasses and a hat “scuffling” with security guards immediately after the fiasco. This led some to speculate that Banksy might have personally carried out the stunt.

“We’ve just been Banksy’d,” said Alex Branczik, senior director at Sotheby’s, according to The Art Newspaper. “He is arguably the greatest British street artist, and tonight we saw a little piece of Banksy genius.”

The unusual heist of the artwork is completely new for the art world and, while the piece was lost forever, the scraps and remnants could now be worth more than the original intact masterpiece itself. “You could argue that the work is now more valuable,” Branczik said. “It’s certainly the first piece to be spontaneously shredded as an auction ends.”

The auction house is now trying to figure out what to do next. “We have talked with the successful purchaser who was surprised by the story. We are in discussion about next steps,” Sotheby’s said in a statement to the Financial Times.

Girl with Balloon was one of the “most widely recognizable images” ever painted by the anonymous British icon. The spray paint and acrylic on canvas that was mounted on board depicted a small girl in black and white reaching out towards a red, heart-shaped balloon attached to a string. “Unlike the other editioned iterations of this famous motif, the present work is a rare unique painting that was given to the present owner by Banksy in 2006 following the artist’s warehouse show, Barely Legal, in Los Angeles,” Sotheby’s said of the lot.

  • The anecdote was a part of a new tell-all campaign book written by former top Trump campaign aides Corey Lewandowski and David Bossie.
  • The former aide who was abandoned at McDonald’s, Sam Nunberg, would later claim to make up his own viral story about a McDonald’s order and Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

Two of President Donald Trump’s former top campaign aides said in an upcoming tell-all book on the election run that the then-Republican candidate once abandoned an aide at a McDonald’s because his custom burger order was taking too long.

It just so happened that the former aide Trump reportedly left behind, Sam Nunberg, was the same operative who would later claim to invent what was a viral story about Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie fetching Trump’s McDonald’s order.

In the upcoming book “Let Trump Be Trump,” which was provided to The Washington Post ahead of its release, authors and top former Trump campaign aides Corey Lewandowski and David Bossie wrote that Nunberg was intentionally left behind at a McDonald’s because his custom order was taking too long.

“Leave him,” Trump said. “Let’s go.”

In June 2016, The New Yorker’s Ryan Lizza wrote in a parenthetical: “One Republican told me that a friend of his on the Trump campaign used Snapchat to send him a video of Christie fetching Trump’s McDonald’s order.”

Nunberg claimed that he invented that tale to embarrass the governor. He made the claim in a lengthy Politico story on Christie last month .

“The sad reality is that it was believable,” he said, laughing.

Lizza later tweeted that Nunberg had not been his source for the anecdote, and said Nunberg’s claim that he invented the story was “incorrect.”

At the time, Brian Murray, a Christie spokesman, called the McDonald’s anecdote a “completely invented scenario” in an email exchange with Business Insider.

“We categorically deny this ridiculous, completely invented scenario, which the writer attributed to an unnamed source’s anonymous friend,” Murray said. “The fact the writer relegated this bit of sleaze between parentheses certainly indicates he knew it was trash that had to be separated from the rest of the story.”

Either you think that a dog spouting therapy-speak while he addresses a confessional-style camera is funny, or you don’t.

If you do — and I count myself in this camp — then the premiere of ABC’s Downward Dog is a sweetly funny little belly rub of a show that premiered Wednesday (9:30/8:30c). If you don’t, then the comedy is an odd project for Allison Tolman to choose as her first post-Fargo series-regular role.

Either way, we want to know what you thought of the debut. But first, a quick recap:

Tolman plays Nan, a Pittsburgh-based copywriter who works for a clothing company and who recently broke up with her boyfriend, Jason (Lucas Neff, Raising Hope). Though she misses him desperately, their split was amicable. And when he visits to pick up his motorcycle, they wind up having sex.

This irks Martin, Nan’s dog, who’s already feeling dejected thanks to her long work house. How do we know this? Because Martin spills all of his feelings to the camera, like he’s in The Office or Parks and Recreation. The pooch bemoans how he feels he’s “just getting zero help” in household tasks like monitoring the scary vacuum cleaner or the mentally unstable neighborhood cat, and he considers obedience class “couples’ therapy.”

So after Jason and Nan’s post-breakup hookup, Martin acts out, destroying a presentation she’d planned to pitch to her company’s big marketing guy. On the fly, she pulls together a bunch of photos of her and Martin and pitches the idea of unconditional love, instead.

“Every day, [Martin] still looks at me exactly the same way, like I am the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen. And I just thought, what if I could see myself the way my dog sees me?” she says. Though Nan’s douchey boss hates it, the big boss loves it, and the company decides to move forward with her “Look at how beautiful you are” campaign.

Nan gets the good news while she’s out for a walk with Martin, who’s just happy that she’s committing to their daily constitutionals rather than shooing him out the door to do his business in the sideyard.

“It’s so vulnerable to love somebody this much,” he later tells the camera. But he’s going to stick around, because “I literally can’t quit her.”
