Rolls-Royce has demontrated what it calls the “world’s first fully autonomous ferry” in Finland, after partnering with Finferries back in May.Read More
]]>
A passenger ferry that got stranded in the Baltic Sea off the coast of the Russian city of Kaliningrad has reached the Lithuanian port of Klaipeda, local media report. The Regina Seaways ferry with 298 passengers and 37 crew members on board was sailing from Germany’s Kiel to Klaipeda on Tuesday when a “technical failure” occurred, the vessel’s Denmark-based operator DFDS said. According to Lithuanian media, there was a fire on the vessel caused by a blast in the engine room.

Greek islands such as Mykonos, Santorini and Crete will be affected by the strike, destinations popular with British tourists.
Crew union PNO confirmed ferries would not leave the port until 6am on Wednesday, according to Associated Press.
The protest could be extended if an agreement is not made over pay increases of five per cent and tax breaks.
It is thought 180,000 holidaymakers could be affected on the islands.
The strike also includes 50,000 private vehicles and 3,000 trucks which aid local deliveries and produce, according to the Greek Shipowners Association for Passenger Ships (SEEN).
Some islands affected do not have local airports, meaning there is no other method to leave them.
Mykonos, Santorini and Crete all have airports tourists could use to leave the islands.
Passengers who are affected by the strike can claim a refund and should contact their travel agents.
Tourists who were affected took to social media to complain about the problems.
One woman tweeted: “Are you kidding me there is a ferry strike on the exact date that we arrive in Greece and need a ferry to get to our destination.”
Another tourist wrote: “I’m stranded in Santorini and apparently word is it’s been extended another day.”
A young woman also affected remarked: “When all of your travel in Greece is via ferry and the workers decide to go on strike…”
Others were more upbeat: “Zakynthos, Greece – What a beautiful island to be stuck on due to a Nationwide Ferry Strike today.”
The strike follows a freeze on pay increases of eight years, following the Greek crisis.
Tourism in Greece is continuing to grow, with an estimated 32 million estimated this year to visit.
Many islands are struggling under the increase in tourists that visit, particularly in the summer months.
Some of the more rural islands are not made to provide for holidaymakers with a lack of roads and accommodation.
Greek politician and environmentalist Nikos Chrysogelos told the Guardian: “There’s a danger of the infrastructure not being prepared, of it all becoming a huge boomerang if we only focus on numbers and don’t look at developing a more sustainable model of tourism.”

The suburbs west of Boston are united on several fronts, among them expensive homes on idyllic back roads and an insatiable quest to vote anyone with the name Kennedy into office. The people here also drive their children to school in high-end cars, and this is where a Boston startup called Sheprd sees opportunity. Instead of Mom and Dad driving—or, heaven forbid, making the kids ride a bus—a shiny Land Rover will whisk them to class in the comfort they deserve.
–
That Land Rover LR4 with the school-bus sign is real, and the drivers are full-time employees who must pass the same licensing as actual school-bus drivers. For $ 17 a ride, any K-12 child in Newton, Massachusetts, can take a Sheprd to summer camp, dance class, music school, the YMCA, or another 14 educational institutions in town. Kids get a leather-lined, air-sprung ride with Kindles and booster seats. Parents can impress other parents with their impeccable taste in chauffeurs. (The uniformed drivers are paid a minimum of $ 20 per hour, wear ID badges, and must pass a Breathalyzer before each shift as well as undergo random drug testing, in addition to a physical and a criminal background check.) Really, though, founder and CEO Nick Jasset said Sheprd is a more reliable, safety-intensive alternative to Uber or other kid-friendly ride-hailing services like California’s HopSkipDrive.
–
“It’s the convenience of an Uber with the trust and security of a super-premium school bus,” Jasset told C/D.
–
Part of that security means drivers will only drop off children at designated areas during open hours, so that, as with a real bus, the kids become the responsibility of an adult on those premises. Sheprd’s policy is never to renege on a ride, and its drivers won’t leave the curb until the child makes it inside. So far, Sheprd hasn’t run any advertising. The white Land Rovers with the flashing signs on their roofs have attracted attention on their own.
–
“We’re automating the carpools that would ordinarily take place in these cars,” he said.
–
If you’re wondering why Sheprd would run an 11-car fleet of Land Rovers—vehicles that aren’t the last word in reliability or fuel economy—it’s because Sheprd is funded by Jaguar Land Rover’s subsidiary, InMotion Ventures. That’s a venture-capital fund run in Coventry that lets JLR, like many automakers, test (and profit from) emerging tech and mobility companies. Since Jasset founded Sheprd in February 2017 and began operations last May, InMotion has poured more than $ 1 million into his company, a substantial sum to drive a bunch of Land Rovers around in a single town.

Jasset makes an effort to distance his company from that other app-based ride-sharing program, Uber, and anyway, Sheprd doesn’t quite have the instant convenience of ordering a last-minute ride. Parents must book or change rides the night prior, so if Billy thinks he’s going to skip fencing practice, tell him he’s sword fighting and that’s final. Eventually, if the concept works (Jasset wouldn’t say how many rides he’s completed or the total number of customers he serves), Sheprd might shepherd the children in other wealthy Massachusetts towns and then conquer “the Westchesters and the Greenwiches.”
–
Jasset insisted he’s not running a rich-kid shuttle. Some parents using Sheprd, he said, are on some sort of government assistance. But there’s no going past it: booking your kids a private Land Rover school bus does make a statement.

To understand the appeal of New York City’s Rockaway Ferry, try getting to its landing, which floats behind a giant water-treatment plant on a desolate stretch of Beach Channel Drive in the Rockaways, Queens’ beach-fronted peninsula of bungalows and housing projects.
Riding an outbound subway train toward the beach on Monday morning, I passed crowded 7 a.m. platforms and spent 15 minutes waiting on a transfer. The best advertisement for the ferry, the city’s latest transit option, might be its sputtering subway system.
The trip to Wall Street on New York City’s publicly subsidized ferry service—which launched on Monday morning—is a world away. There were seats to spare in the airy main cabin where passengers celebrated the debut with free coffee and donuts. For $ 2.75, we skimmed across a glassy Atlantic Ocean, around Coney Island, through the Narrows, and into the East River in a little under an hour.
This, Mayor Bill de Blasio has promised, is the beginning of a new era in New York City—a return to the water that will relieve congestion on the city’s roadways and railways. In fact, each ferry fits fewer people than a single subway car. The idea advanced by James Patchett, president of the New York City Economic Development Corporation, that these ferries could function as a substitute for the subway is ludicrous. The first half-dozen ferries carried 700 people from Rockaway and Sunset Park to Lower Manhattan, not even one subway train worth of people.
The truth is that the construction of the subways drove New York’s ferries out of business a century ago. That they have returned is a sign of a city that sees transportation as a tool to advance interests in politics and real estate—not to help people get around. There simply aren’t that many people who live and work on the waterfront, and therefore, no way that boats can meaningfully impact congestion.
And yet, it must be said: What a lovely ride it was. With his ferry network, wannabe populist De Blasio has given the handful of New Yorkers who do live and work on the waterfront a real luxury amenity. Yes, the public subsidy is enormous. Yes, the ridership is limited. Yes, there were some hiccups on opening day. But for the handful of people who can structure their lives around these routes, the commute will be a real delight.
Pacific Coast Highway/Wikimedia CommonsIt was easy to see the appeal for the dozens of Rockaway residents who were heading to 9 a.m. jobs in Lower Manhattan. Like everyone else in this city, they always feel like they’ve gotten the short end of the stick. De Blasio used to get booed out here regularly, in part because he shut down the ferry service set up after Superstorm Sandy. Some riders remember the date of the last ride: Oct. 31, 2014. The fare was $ 2; the city paid another $ 30 per rider in subsidy.
“I took it every day, and I’ve missed it ever since,” said Alison Vultaggio, a resident going to work in the Financial District. “It’s not much quicker, but it’s so nice to be above ground.” (The cable channel New York 1 had a race, and the ferry beat the train by a few minutes. But the race was between ferry stops, not subway stops.)
The 8:30 boat on Monday morning was a bit of a special occasion. Gemma Mozeak, of Jamaica, had driven out to Rockaway with her son Alex, who works at a law firm downtown. For her, it was a proud moment for Queens and the Rockaways, and a reminder that New York was an ocean city.
Lamar Gilmore Jr. and Jay Black had driven in from Laurelton and St. Albans, respectively, to ride downtown. “We came for two reasons,” said Gilmore, “One: We’re New Yorkers and we want to be part of the change. Two: We wanted to see about taking our bikes, see about riding over there. This is a dry run.”
Other commuters drew a contrast with the subway. The ferry, they said, was civilized; the subway was full of “wild animals.” You’d get your face slashed on that thing, they warned. You’d need a Glock and a Taser to ride through East New York.
Henry Grabar/SlateThey were wrong about the subway, but boy were they right about the ferry. Even without the free coffee, I was awed to think this ferry was about to provide the regular commute for a handful of New Yorkers: 12,500, according to EDC’s estimates, on six routes. Four will open this year; two in 2018. It will cost an astounding $ 325 million to build and operate, though riders will pay the same fare as their counterparts on the subway. (Those who need to combine the ferry trip with a subway or bus will pay two fares.)
I arrived in Manhattan with a feeling of thrill and loathing. On the one hand, how delightful to travel through New York Harbor in a seat by the window, with a laptop connected to Wi-Fi, and a hot coffee on the table in front of me.
On the other hand, how shocking to see so much public money and initiative expended for the benefit of so few. Why? It’s partly an economic development strategy to encourage waterfront construction. It’s partly for leisure travel, which includes both tourists and New Yorkers—it’s hard to beat the views from the East River Ferry on a summer afternoon. It’s partly because ferry infrastructure can be deployed quickly. (Says it right there on the box: “Ready in just one mayoral term!”) And it’s partly that, since New York State retains control of the city’s real transit infrastructure (buses, subways, and trains), the mayor funnels his transit ambitions into toys like ferries and streetcars.
Our boat, unlike the earlier trips Monday morning, did not get a welcome from Hizzoner on Wall Street. But I did run into Terry MacRae, the chairman and CEO of Hornblower, the company that runs the ferries. MacRae had been up since 3 a.m., surveying the scene as commuters walked up the gangway.
This isn’t exactly business as usual for MacRae, whose company has traditionally operated cruises, waterborne special events, and tour boats—including those that run to Alcatraz, the Statue of Liberty, and under Niagara Falls. “We’re more oriented toward hospitality,” said MacRae. “We’re happy to do transportation also, when it can be done in style.”
Stylish, for sure. Transportation? Only for a lucky few.

Donggeochado (South Korea) (AFP) – Salvage operators began raising South Korea’s sunken Sewol ferry Wednesday, officials said, nearly three years after the disaster killed more than 300 people and dealt a crippling blow to now-ousted president Park Geun-Hye.
Emotional parents of victims — the vast majority of the dead in the country’s worst-ever maritime tragedy were schoolchildren — urged people to pray for a successful recovery.
The vessel was lying more than 40 metres (130 feet) below the waves off southwestern South Korea and the operation, originally scheduled for last year, had been pushed back several times because of adverse weather.
It is thought that nine bodies still unaccounted for may be trapped inside the sunken ship, and raising the ferry intact has been a key demand of the victims’ families.
“I am a mother who just really misses her daughter. Please pray for us so we can go home with Eun-Hwa,” said Lee Keum-Hui, one of a handful of relatives who have been living in makeshift homes at Paengmok, the closest port to the wreck, since the accident.
“We will be grateful if you pray with us so that the last remaining victims can return to their families,” she said, breaking down.
Other bereaved family members have been maintaining a vigil at a camp on a hilltop on Donggeochado, the nearest island to the site, just 1.5 kilometres away.
Yellow ribbons — a symbol for the victims of the deadly disaster — hang on nearby trees, their colour faded by the course of time.
“My heart is pounding,” said father Jung Seong-Wook of the decision to go ahead with the lift. “I have mixed feelings that I cannot put into words. I’m also a little scared.”
In a tense atmosphere during the day, another father nervously watched through binoculars, trying to get a glimpse of the operation. Some 50 bereaved family members went out to sea by boat to watch the proceedings, he added.
Two enormous barges were positioned on either side of the 6,825-tonne ship and air bags inserted for the salvage effort, which is being led by a Chinese consortium.
Beams were installed by digging through the seabed underneath the wreck, which was lying on its side, and cables attached to bring it painstakingly towards the surface.
Once two-thirds of it is exposed, a semi-submersible will be positioned underneath to raise it out of the water and transport it to the port of Mokpo to carry out investigations and search for the missing.
A senior official from the maritime ministry said it took three hours to raise the wreck one metre off the seabed in what was initially a feasibility test.
The ministry then decided to go ahead with the full lifting, it said in a statement. The operation is expected to take three days.
The disaster and its aftermath gripped South Korea and overshadowed the presidency of Park, who stayed at her residence for seven hours in the crucial initial phase of the sinking.
She has never specified what she was doing, sparking wild rumours including a tryst and cosmetic surgery.
A permanent Sewol protest site targeting her was subsequently set up in the center of Seoul, with effigies of the head of state on display alongside pictures of dead schoolchildren.
Negligence over the sinking was one of the grounds for which parliament impeached Park in December, although the constitutional court ruled that it was not an impeachable offense when it upheld her dismissal on other charges earlier this month.
Donggeochado island has a population of only around 300, but the once-a-day ferry to it was packed with reporters Wednesday and at least one outside broadcast truck.
Investigations into the disaster, in which 304 people died, concluded it was largely man-made — the cumulative result of an illegal redesign, an overloaded cargo bay, inexperienced crew and a questionable relationship between the ship operators and state regulators.
Even though the vessel took around three hours to sink, those on board were never ordered to evacuate, while the crew escaped to safety.
Captain Lee Jun-Seok was sentenced to life in prison for “murder through willful negligence” and 14 other crew members given terms ranging from two to 12 years.
