A Bed Bath & Beyond store.

  • A man who died after falling from a building in Manhattan was identified by police as Gustavo Arnal.
  • The Bed Bath & Beyond CFO fell from the 18th floor on Friday, the NYPD confirmed to Insider.
  • The retailer recently announced plans to close 150 stores and cut a fifth of its workforce.

A man who died after falling from the 18th floor of an apartment building has been identified as the chief financial officer of Bed Bath & Beyond, the New York Post reported.

Gustavo Arnal, 52, fell from the 18th floor of the tower on Leonard Street in Manhattan's tony Tribeca neighborhood around noon Friday, the New York Police Department confirmed to Insider.

The New York Post reported, citing law-enforcement sources, that Arnal's wife was home at the time and that he "jumped" from the apartment without saying anything or leaving a note explaining.

Arnal joined Bed Bath & Beyond in 2020 after serving as Avon's finance chief for more than a year. Arnal had held a senior position at Walgreens Boots Alliance and Procter & Gamble before joining the cosmetics company.

Last month, Arnal sold about 42,000 shares in the retailer for about $ 1 million, according to MarketBeat.com. He also had been named in an insider trading and securities fraud lawsuit less than two weeks before his death, court documents show.

The death comes days after Bed Bath & Beyond announced plans to close about 150 stores and cut its workforce by a fifth in a bid to revive its fortunes.

The company told investors on a call on Wednesday that it would shift away from own-brands and start offering more labels and that it had secured loans from JPMorgan and Sixth Street Partners.

The retailer's shares have become a "meme stock" like GameStop and fluctuated considerably in recent months. The chief executive, Mark Tritton, was ousted in June and replaced by board member Sue Gove.

Bed Bath & Beyond and Arnal's family members did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

This has posed further challenges for the team: “Of course, it’s a lot easier if you’re face-to-face with somebody in the auction to go up to them afterwards and say, ‘Do you mind being on Homes Under the Hammer?’

“And then they’re likely to say, ‘Well, I don’t know, what’s it like?’ And then you’ve got a team from the production house, who will be able to explain.

“If it’s the auctioneer, who’s having to say, ‘Would you mind being a Home Under the Hammer? I think if they said, ‘No’, that would probably be it.”

Homes Under the Hammer airs weekdays on BBC One at 10am.

RELATED STORIES

Dancing With the Stars seemed to have just one thing on its mind Monday night: Derek! Hough! Was! Back!

In case you somehow missed the three weeks of teasers from Tyra Banks, judge Derek Hough — who started his DWTS career as a professional partner years ago — returned to the ballroom floor this week to perform a paso doble with girlfriend (and onetime DWTS troupe member) Hayley Erbert. Forget about those Top 11 contestants! Derek’s dancing again, and nothing else matters! (Derek’s performance was very good, but it was clearly pre-taped, no?)

But even though the remaining Season 29 amateurs didn’t inspire quite as much hype as Derek’s return, many of them made a strong case for advancing to the Top 10. Others, however, seemed to regress a bit, including a contestant who topped the leaderboard just last week. Before we get to the results, let’s recap the evening’s performances:

Johnny Weir and pro Britt Stewart (Salsa): One of the great mysteries of Season 29 is Johnny’s continuous struggle with traditional ballroom styles. Last week’s contemporary was tremendous, but so much of this salsa was off — awkward hand connections, a final lift that looked a little painful to execute and, most disappointingly, Johnny’s tendency to dance just a liiittle ahead of the music. He has one of the best personalities on the show, and his chemistry with Britt is so, so good, but I can’t help but wonder how many more chances he’ll have to prove he’s a consistent performer. Judges’ Score: 22/30

Nev Schulman and pro Jenna Johnson (Jazz): Whomever paired Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch’s “Good Vibrations” with the style of jazz, frankly, has a sick and twisted mind. (It’ll come in handy for next week’s Halloween show, at least!) But Nev, once again, was reliably good, and he didn’t miss a step in this intricate performance. Judges’ Score: 26/30

Monica Aldama and pro Val Chmerkovskiy (Rumba): Despite the glowing remarks from the judges — including Bruno’s comment that Monica’s face was “inspired” during Monday’s routine — I feel as though she’s struggling with the same problem that several gymnasts have had on this show: She’s got all the steps down, but the emotional connection just ain’t there. The rumba is meant to be passionate and seductive, and though it’s hard to accomplish that with Rod Stewart’s “Have I Told You Lately” as your soundtrack, I so wish Monica had brought a little sensuality to her dynamic with Val, who was doing most of the heavy lifting here when it came to emotional intensity. (Great hip action, though!). Judges’ Score: 27/30

Skai Jackson and pro Alan Bersten (Cha-Cha): Man, this was a heartbreaker, huh? I had hoped Skai’s transcendent foxtrot from two weeks ago would be a turning point for her, but she continues to radiate nervous energy when she enters the ballroom, more than a month into the season. And then, of course, there was that middle section, in which Skai completely lost the choreography for a few seconds. She recovered nicely, and the second half of the number was surprisingly strong given her early mistakes… but Skai’s now had two big fumbles during her performances, and I worry she’s not getting any more comfortable on the dance floor as the season continues. Judges’ Score: 18/30

Vernon Davis and pro Peta Murgatroyd (Cha-Cha): Vernon, fortunately, did not seem rattled by Skai’s cha-cha, which came immediately before his and featured quite a few missteps. But even though Vernon has this magnificent energy and commitment to the movements — dude is not afraid to pop the booty out, folks — there’s been something tragically forgettable about his recent performances, and I fear he’s forever stuck in the land of sevens. Judges’ Score: 21/30

Nelly and pro Daniella Karagach (Viennese Waltz): Nelly knew we wanted rounded arms, and he gave us rounded arms in this Viennese waltz. I do wish he had a slightly stronger chemistry with Daniella, who’s working incredibly hard to soften his edges and choreograph to his strengths — but on the whole, Nelly’s elegance (his Nellygance, if you will) and vulnerability in this routine were such a pleasant surprise, given his previous hesitance to completely surrender to the choreography. Judges’ Score: 24/30

DWTS Season 29Jeannie Mai and pro Brandon Armstrong (Rumba, pictured): What Monica’s rumba lacked in emotional connection, Jeannie’s had in spades. Moved to tears by her family members who had risked everything to flee Vietnam, Jeannie began this routine with quivering lips and glassy eyes — but even after she got her emotions under control, Jeannie maintained that intensity and sensitivity until the number was finished, and she brought sensuality to the movements despite performing on the verge of tears. Impressive all around. Judges’ Score: 25/30

AJ McLean and pro Cheryl Burke (Samba): This. Was. So. Fun. Some of this season’s male contestants seem a bit too restrained and self-conscious when they perform, but AJ completely goes for it, sinking into the pocket of this samba perfectly. And those shoulder shimmies? Everything. Judges’ Score: 27/30

Chrishell Stause and pro Gleb Savchenko (Contemporary): I was a little nervous for Chrishell to tackle a style as demanding as contemporary, but I think she actually benefited from a style that’s more abstract and emotion-based. Sure, it wasn’t technically perfect — and I’d argue that Gleb could have given Chrishell meatier choreography, instead of packing the piece with lifts — but the dedication to Chrishell’s late parents made the entire number pulse with emotion, which is especially important for this style. Judges’ Score: 24/30

Kaitlyn Bristowe and pro Artem Chigvintsev (Samba): I got a chuckle out of Kaitlyn’s pre-performance video package, which tried its darndest to convince us Kaitlyn was struggling with the choreography. We all knew she was going to slay in the end, right? Carrie Ann had a point, though, that this samba managed to be both technically superb and a little underwhelming; the bar for Kaitlyn is especially high, given her consistent excellence, and she’s got the unenviable task of outdoing herself every time. Judges’ Score: 27/30

Justina Machado and pro Sasha Farber (Viennese Waltz): It was graceful, it was sensitive and that foot did not come off the floor. Justina is another contestant who’s been so dependably good every week that she runs the risk of falling through the cracks with voters. But as worried as I am that Justina will go home sooner than she deserves because she’s too good — there’s precedent! — it was lovely to see a more emotional side of her, and her connection with Sasha is among the season’s most joyous. Judges’ Score: 27/30

And now, the results:

Julianna Margulies’ Good Fight Stint Fell Apart Due to Differing Financial ‘Expectations,’ Per CBS All Access https://briefnews.eu/julianna-margulies-good-fight-stint-fell-apart-due-to-differing-financial-expectations-per-cbs-all-access/ https://briefnews.eu/julianna-margulies-good-fight-stint-fell-apart-due-to-differing-financial-expectations-per-cbs-all-access/#respond Thu, 01 Aug 2019 22:57:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/julianna-margulies-good-fight-stint-fell-apart-due-to-differing-financial-expectations-per-cbs-all-access/

Julianna Margulies‘ ill-fated Good Fight guest stint was a hot topic at the Television Critics Assoc. summer press tour, with CBS All Access’ top exec weighing in on the headline-making kerfuffle for the first time.

Quick refresher: The Good Wife star was thisclose to reprising her Emmy-winning role of Alicia Florrick on spinoff series The Good Fight, but the deal fell apart because “CBS refused to pay my [ask],” Margulies recently told our sister site Deadline, noting that CBS wanted to pay her a guest-star rate vs. her regular fee. “I’m not a guest star; I started the whole thing with The Good Wife. I wanted to be paid my worth and stand up for equal pay.

“If Jon Hamm came back for a Mad Men spinoff or Kiefer Sutherland wanted to do a 24 spinoff,” Margulies added, “they would be paid.”

On Thursday, Julie McNamara, CBS All Access’ EVP Original Content, said of the dispute: “We love Julianna and there’s a long, great history [with her]. We did want to bring her to guest on The Good Fight. There was a different [financial] expectation of what that meant, and it didn’t work out… It was just a deal that didn’t work out. I won’t go into the financial specifics of that.” (McNamara also teased that CBS All Access has “another project in development” with Margulies, but the exec declined to offer any specifics.)

At TCA last February, Good Wife and Good Fight co-creator Robert King revealed under what circumstances Alicia might have appeared. “We thought maybe about making a big episode where she would be at the resistance, [and] Diane and her face each other,” King told reporters. “But that would be the end of the story. It felt like an asterisk.”

The Walking Dead Midseason Premiere Recap: Careless Whisperer — Plus, Which Duo Fell Into Enemy Hands? https://briefnews.eu/the-walking-dead-midseason-premiere-recap-careless-whisperer-plus-which-duo-fell-into-enemy-hands/ https://briefnews.eu/the-walking-dead-midseason-premiere-recap-careless-whisperer-plus-which-duo-fell-into-enemy-hands/#comments Mon, 11 Feb 2019 12:16:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-walking-dead-midseason-premiere-recap-careless-whisperer-plus-which-duo-fell-into-enemy-hands/ What kind of a person would willingly skin a zombie and wear its face like the grossest Halloween mask of all time? “I suspect some vessel filled with a chunky salsa of abnormal impulses and metastasized rage,” suggested Eugene in Sunday’s midseason premiere of The Walking Dead. And before the episode was over, we’d heard from not one but two such vessels, the rare Whisperers who had occasion to speak in raised voices. If you read on, we’ll not only go over their introductions, we’ll follow Negan on his walkabout, eavesdrop as Rosita shares a secret (with more folks than she intended!) and reveal which of our survivors wound up chitchatting their way into a trap.

the walking dead season 9 episode 9 recap samantha morton alpha rosita pregnant‘I THOUGHT YOU WERE SMARTER THAN THIS… GUESS NOT’ | After an opening in which Daryl, Michonne & Co. managed to escape (with relative ease) from the graveyard with an injured Eugene, plus Jesus’ corpse, “Adaptation” cut to Alexandria, where a newly-free Negan sampled a tomato — again with the produce! — and pilfered Judith’s compass before the little girl caught him trying to hop the fence and vanish into the woods. How ’bout she just look the other way and let him go? he suggested. “How ’bout no?” she replied. Love that kid. Although it wasn’t long before the baddie’s promise not to hurt anyone, not even if they tried to hurt him, convinced the youngster to turn him loose. She even let him keep her compass. “It’ll help you find your way,” she said, adding that if he dared to come back, she wouldn’t hesitate to shoot.

the walking dead season 9 episode 9 recap alpha lydia rosita pregnant‘MAYBE WHAT HAPPENED WAS BOUND TO HAPPEN’ | Meanwhile, as Tara sent out search parties in hopes of bringing Jesus & Friends back to the Hilltop, the survivors of the Whisperers’ attack slowly made tracks toward exactly that destination. Along the way, Michonne thanked Daryl for trying so hard to find Rick’s body… and for “after,” whatever that meant. Shortly, Dog sounded the alarm. But were the approaching walkers “the living kind or original recipe?” Eugene wondered. To find out, Daryl started shooting them in the leg. Some, it turned out, were just zombies; others, Whisperers. Before our heroes were forced to beat a hasty retreat, one of the masked villains — a scared-s—-less teenage girl (Cassady McClincy, Castle Rock’s Young Molly) — surrendered and was taken along for questioning. But “you try anything,” Michonne warned, and “you won’t have to pretend” anymore to be the undead!

the walking dead season 9 episode 9 recap alpha lydia rosita pregnant‘HI, PUPPY’ | Elsewhere, Negan was busy savoring the fact that he had a blue sky overhead for a change instead of the ceiling of his cell. But it wasn’t all sunshine and daffodils for Glenn’s murderer. His supplies were lost to a random walker attack, then a drink of lake water left him puking on his shirt. Nonetheless, he tried — valiantly, even — to keep his promise to Judith while shopping for replacement threads. Though he was accosted in the store by wild dogs, he did his damnedest to escape without harming a hair on their heads. Later, he arrived at the remains of the Sanctuary, whistled that melody that we all hoped we’d never hear again, and with a glance at Judith’s compass, decided that back in his cell was where at this point he really belonged.

the walking dead season 9 episode 9 recap alpha lydia rosita pregnant‘NO MORE BULLS—!’ | No sooner had Daryl, Michonne, Aaron, Eugene, Magna and Yumiko gotten through the gates of the Hilltop with Jesus’ body than Tammy Rose was all over Tara, going on about how “people are gonna want justice for this… We’re gonna look to you for that.” Sheesh! Give her a second, lady! When Daryl, Michonne and Tara tried to question their prisoner, all they got was a blubbering mess of a girl who insisted that her group had been good people, they didn’t have names, blah, blah, blah. Useless. Tara would try again in the morning, but, noted Michonne, it would have to be without her — she had to go warn Alexandria of this weird new threat. In a moment alone with Daryl, Michonne then pointed out what a risk it was to keep the girl there. If the kid didn’t talk the following day, “you know what you have to do,” she said.

the walking dead season 9 episode 9 recap alpha lydia rosita pregnant‘DOES ALCOHOL ALWAYS MAKE YOU FEEL THIS BAD?’ | After Siddiq treated Eugene’s injury at the Hilltop’s infirmary, the brainiac seized a moment in private with Rosita — well, semi-private (the doc was still nearby) — to share how spooked he’d been by Jesus’ untimely demise. If he, too, unexpectedly met his maker, he didn’t want to do so never having confessed to her that he… Aaand before he could spit out his declaration of love, she’d run outside and vomited. When Siddiq followed, concerned for her health, she admitted — as Eugene eavesdropped through the window — that when the two of them had been “having fun, before Gabriel,” she’d gotten pregnant. (So what is that, a love quadrangle now?) Nearby, Henry apologized to Daryl for getting thrown in the drunk tank. He’d just been looking for his place at the Hilltop, the teen said. Like, “who am I here?”

the walking dead season 9 episode 9 recap alpha lydia rosita pregnant‘WALLS DON’T KEEP YOU SAFE’ | Before Michonne set off for home, Daryl grumbled about his discomfort with being the one to decide the prisoner’s fate. Why did it have to be him? “Because you’re the best damn judge of character I know,” Michonne said, adding that without Jesus or Maggie, the Hilltoppers were gonna need him. (Some vote of confidence in Tara, Michonne! Wow.) Later, as Daryl angrily questioned the young Whisperer, Henry grew more and more upset in his own cell. “She’s just a girl!” he cried. But a girl who seemed intent on offering up only tearful BS about herself, her mother, their group… About the only thing she said that sounded legit, albeit nuts, was their reason for traveling with walkers. “They protected us,” she explained, “so we protected them.” After Daryl gave up — huffing that Henry’s place was in his cell till he wised the hell up! — the gruff babysitter listened in as the prisoner spoke with her cell-block companion. She even admitted that her name was Lydia (aka Carl’s love interest from the comics).

the walking dead season 9 episode 9 recap alpha lydia rosita pregnant‘I KNOW YOU SAID YOU’D SHOOT, BUT DAMN!’ | Speeding back toward Alexandria on a motorcycle — was that Daryl’s, after all this time? — Negan was sent flying by a pistol-packing Judith. She’d warned him that she’d shoot if he returned, she reminded him. “You sure as s— did,” he replied. Hey, “language,” she snapped. “I’m a kid, a–hole!” OK, I don’t just love Judith; against all odds, I love this potty-mouthed tag team. But I digress. She’d let him return to his cell, as was his intention, but what then? “I will let you know,” he said, “when I know.” Back at the Hilltop, Magna bonded with Enid, who was worried about Alden. Her boyfriend, unaware that Daryl & Co. had returned so long ago that Jesus had since been buried, was still out looking for them with Luke. Actually, she didn’t even know what to call her relationship with the former Savior, it was so new. “I’ve got one of those, too,” said Magna, adding that Alden would be safe with Luke. Would he, though?

‘THAT’S WEIRD’ | As Alden and Luke searched for the survivors that they thought were missing, a fine bromance seemed to be sparked. Alden decided to call the newbie Professor — but who’d be his Mary Ann? — and Luke concluded that, since he was musically inclined and his pal sang, they could rock the upcoming fair as a two-man band called Symphony of Awesome. They even believed that they were closing in on the missing persons when they began following a trail of arrows that Yumiko had left. Only Yumiko hadn’t left them, they were a trap set by the Whisperers’ leader, Alpha (Samantha Morton — maybe you’ve heard she was joining the cast). As the episode came to a close, the dynamic duo was surrounded by walkers that were actually Whisperers. “Trail ends here,” said Alpha, training a shotgun on them.

So, what did you think of the midseason premiere? Alpha and Lydia’s introductions? Negan and Judith’s oddball friendship? Grade the episode below, then hit the comments.

  • Real estate in Manhattan has been moving toward a buyers’ market.
  • The median sales price of units sold in Manhattan fell 6% in the final three months of 2018.
  • The fourth quarter marked the first time in three years that the figure was below $ 1 million.

In the latest sign that Manhattan is heading toward a softer real-estate market, the typical cost of housing sold fell below $ 1 million during the final stretch of 2018 for the first time in three years.

The median sales price of units sold in the borough fell nearly 6% from the same period last year to $ 999,000 from October to December, according to a report from listing broker Douglas Elliman Real Estate, the lowest since 2015. Though the rate of decline is steadying, the number of total sales fell for a fifth straight quarter.

SJW weaponized: Target Corp ‘fell’ for troll’s outrage with white kid wearing Black Panther costume https://briefnews.eu/sjw-weaponized-target-corp-fell-for-trolls-outrage-with-white-kid-wearing-black-panther-costume/ https://briefnews.eu/sjw-weaponized-target-corp-fell-for-trolls-outrage-with-white-kid-wearing-black-panther-costume/#respond Thu, 01 Nov 2018 18:03:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sjw-weaponized-target-corp-fell-for-trolls-outrage-with-white-kid-wearing-black-panther-costume/

A conservative blogger says he has managed to force US’s second-largest retailer to change the photo for a Black Panther costume so that the model kid didn’t look white.

In case you’ve missed the entire ‘Black Panther only for black kids’ debate, here it is. When the Marvel superhero movie was released in January, it was both a major commercial success and a cultural event for many people. After all, it featured a predominantly black cast, borrowed heavily from African cultures for its setting and its core conflict was about how to best deal with the toxic legacy of black slavery and racism in the US.

But for some people the flick’s popularity posed a very peculiar question – is it appropriate for parents of white children to allow them to wear a Black Panther costume for Halloween. Not a simple question to answer in a country, where questioning the blackface taboo can cost a career. For what it’s worth, some of the character’s creators said, hell, yes, let the kids have fun.

So here comes Halloween, and Mark Dice, a popular conservative video blogger decides it’s time to do some trolling of retail chains selling Black Panther costumes. Nothing spells trouble for a business as a specter of an angry mob of social justice warriors demanding to stop cultural appropriation of Wakanda. Dice faked an outrage campaign over Target, the second-biggest retailers in America.

And apparently his trolling worked. At least now Dice gloats about fooling the network into having only black models wearing Black Panther costumes…

…and is trying to bait Walmart into doing the same thing. At the moment of the writing, Walmart’s product page remained unchanged.

RT has requested Target Corporation for comments about Dice’s claim.

  • ABC’s “Roseanne” spin-off, “The Conners,” debuted on Tuesday to 10.5 million viewers.
  • That’s not as high as the “Roseanne” premiere earlier this year, but on par with industry predictions.
  • “If we can capture even half of ‘Roseanne’s’ audience from last year, we’ll be the number one new show for the season,” ABC exec Andy Kubitz told Vulture.

“The Conners,” ABC’s spin-off of “Roseanne,” premiered Tuesday without Roseanne Barr. While the numbers don’t match those of the “Roseanne” reboot earlier this year, ABC didn’t need them to.
