Magnum P.I.‘s titular Thomas needs the particular set of skills of some Hawaii Five-0 ohana, in this exclusive sneak peek from the Season 3 premiere of the CBS island drama.

In the Season 3 opener — titled “Double Jeopardy” and airing this Friday at 9/8c (bookended by the returns of MacGyver and Blue Bloods) — Magnum and Higgins’ (Jay Hernandez and Perdita Weeks) new clients hire them to find a missing brother, who was last seen on the island. The case leads to [Spoiler] being shot (through the proverbial heart?) and another friend being abducted, when a case of revennnnnnge! is revealed during the investigation.

In the sneak peek above, Magnum recruits Five-0‘s Flippa (played by Shawn Garnett) to see if he and his cousin Kamekona can help suss out the source of the fake ID used by a person of interest in their case. But maybe Flippa, in addition to commenting on La Mariana’s COVID-impacted crowd, can also help out Rick (Zachary Knighton) with a problem? Press play above to see what other (shady) service he happily offers.

In addition to Garnett, Magnum P.I.‘s season premiere also features Hawaii Five-0’s Kimee Balmilero, as Dr. Noelani Cunha.

And the catalogue titles this week are rich and varied, from Criterion classics to Spielberg’s Oscar winner to lowbrow delights. Let’s dig in:

Set in Mexico in the early 1970s — and influenced by his own childhood memories — it’s an Y Tu Mamá También-style examination of the country’s class and political struggles as seen through a distinctively personal lens, the intermingled stories of two women abandoned by irresponsible men and rising to the occasion. As ever, the patience and control of the filmmaking is astonishing, and his signature long takes are more felt than seen; they don’t call attention to themselves anymore, and don’t need to. The takeaway is not visual pyrotechnics, but emotion; the empathy and humanity of his work, always present, is this time downright overwhelming.

ON 4K / BLU-RAY / DVD / VOD

A Simple Favor: Ultimately, Paul Feig just might not’ve been the right director for this affectionate throwback to ‘90s erotic thrillers — he never quite gets the tonal balance right, and it swings far too goofy by the end. But there’s a lot to like here, primarily the work of leads Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively, who position themselves well as polar opposites (type-A/laid-back, mousy/sexy) and end up blurring those lines. Kendrick plays a variety of notes well, particularly as she learns to be assertive and tries being Nancy Drew, while there’s something utterly bewitching about the way Lively calls Kendrick “baby” and tells her she’s sexy. It’s not a great movie, but it’s gonna play great on TNT in a couple of years. (Includes audio commentaries, featurettes, gag reel, and deleted scenes.)

ON 4K / BLU-RAY

Schindler’s List: The “movie we need right now” line has been attached to a fair amount of dubious art over the past two years, but Steven Spielberg’s 1993 Best Picture winner (newly re-mastered and re-released for its 25th anniversary) certainly earns the claim. The passage of time has softened some of the legitimate criticisms — this viewer still takes issue with the girl in the pink coat, and there she is, right on the Blu-ray cover — but it’s also rightfully bolstered the power of its performances, particularly the trio (Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley, and then-unknown Ralph Fiennes) at its center. (Includes featurettes and Voices from the List documentary.)

ON BLU-RAY

Panique: The laughs land and then sting in this 1946 French comedy/drama from director Julien Duvivier, new to the Criterion Collection, in which an intimate community is rocked by the revelation of a murderer in their midst. It puts the entire town on edge, understandably, as worry gives way to paranoia, rumors, and accusations. Duvivier manifests this mounting panic via inventive photography (the Dutch angles and subjective camera are especially striking), and the flashes of wicked humor and sly sensuality serve as a fine diversion on the way to a powerfully bleak conclusion. (Includes featurettes, interviews, and trailer.)

Sawdust and Tinsel: This 1953 Ingmar Bergman effort — included in Criterion’s recent Ingmar Bergman’s Cinema box set, now available as a stand-alone Blu-ray — creates a tricky mixture of mirth and dread, of despair just out of the eyeline of joy. Bergman’s story concerns a ram-shackle, poverty-striken traveling circus, but his focus is on the washed-up proprietor, his unhappy partner, and their melancholy explorations of life away from each other during one particularly dire tour stop. It’s told with an intimacy that’s often uncomfortable, physically and psychologically (nothing’s more devastating than desperate honesty), yet most of its truths are found in the faces of its leads — particularly the looks of weary resignation they share before strolling off together, to their next nowhere destination. What a brilliant, insightful work. (Includes audio commentary and Bergman introduction.)

The Thing from Another World: This 1951 sci-fi/horror classic (newly given the Blu-ray bump by Warner Archive) was sort of the Poltergeist of its time — in that there have been arguments for years over whether it was directed by its credited director, Christian Nyby, or his better-known and beloved producer, Howard Hawks. And it’s not hard to see where the Hawks people are coming from; its crew-of-guys-on-a-base set-up is reminiscent of his Only Angels Have Wings, while the rapid-fire, overlapping dialogue (particularly in the early scenes) were one of Hawks’ trademarks. Whoever is responsible, this is a firecracker of a scary alien movie (sharply remade by John Carpenter in 1982), evocatively and effectively crafted (the monster is wisely kept hidden through much of the picture), featuring a marvelously apocalyptic Dimitri Tiomkin score.

Bloody Birthday: So here’s a nasty little item from 1981, newly restored by Arrow Video, that is in many ways a typical slasher movie of the era — basically it’s end to end murders, interrupted by occasional leering at naked teenage flesh. But there’s something genuinely disturbing about this story of three 10-year-old kids, born under the same eclipse, who are absolutely ruthless psychopaths; director Ed Hunt works in a key of relentless nihilism that is undeniably effective. It’s so low budget, they couldn’t even afford a “Happy Birthday to You” sing-along at the big birthday party, but the nondescript look and cheapo production design somehow render it creepier. It feels homemade, somehow, which makes the whole thing even more unsettling. (Includes audio commentary, featurettes, interviews, and trailers.)

Vimeo drops its YouTube rivalry in favor of selling stock footage https://briefnews.eu/vimeo-drops-its-youtube-rivalry-in-favor-of-selling-stock-footage/ https://briefnews.eu/vimeo-drops-its-youtube-rivalry-in-favor-of-selling-stock-footage/#respond Wed, 05 Sep 2018 19:17:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/vimeo-drops-its-youtube-rivalry-in-favor-of-selling-stock-footage/

For the longest time, Vimeo was one of YouTube’s most conspicuous alternatives. It was where you posted your indie production if you weren’t a fan of YouTube’s approach and it even created original material in a bid to stand out. The company has always lived in the shadow of its Google-owned rival, however, and now it’s backing away from that obvious rivalry. In an Axios interview, company chief Anjali Sud said Vimeo was shifting away from its emphais on indie filmmaking (not that it’s completely giving that up) and will instead focus on selling a creative tool, Vimeo Stock. It’ll center around access to a large stock video collection, and will offer tools to optimize and post footage across a slew of social networks.

The solution will sound familiar if you’ve ever used a service like Shutterstock, but Vimeo is betting that it can attract stock video creators by giving them a much higher cut of revenue when customers use their footage (at least 60 percent versus the usual 35 percent). Sud also characterized Vimeo as an “agnostic and independent home” where creators could offer their video to various services, rather than a YouTube or Facebook that has a vested interest in locking you in.

You see a lot of this coming. Vimeo has been increasingly centered on creative tools, and its marketing has emphasized pros in recent months (just ask anyone who has seen its endless wave of ads on YouTube). Even so, this move toward stock content marks the end of an era for Vimeo. It’s an acknowledgment not just that YouTube may be difficult to stop, but that video is virtually ubiquitous. People don’t need to go to a site like Vimeo when the videos they want to watch are on Facebook and Twitter, but pros still need places to buy and sell the footage they’ll use inside those videos.

Kim Dotcom says dump 'worthless' dollar in favor of gold & crypto as US debt spirals out of control https://briefnews.eu/kim-dotcom-says-dump-worthless-dollar-in-favor-of-gold-crypto-as-us-debt-spirals-out-of-control/ https://briefnews.eu/kim-dotcom-says-dump-worthless-dollar-in-favor-of-gold-crypto-as-us-debt-spirals-out-of-control/#respond Mon, 13 Aug 2018 14:28:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kim-dotcom-says-dump-worthless-dollar-in-favor-of-gold-crypto-as-us-debt-spirals-out-of-control/

Controversial internet entrepreneur Kim Dotcom has called for the ditching of the US dollar, which, he says, is doomed to depreciation, and investing into gold and cryptocurrencies.

The huge US debt will destroy the American economy and lead to a global economic collapse, which is just around the corner, the founder of the now defunct Hong Kong-based online company Megaupload tweeted on Sunday.

Dotcom had previously said that the US debt burden has become unmanageable with the government increasing the already huge figure by a trillion dollars annually, and will never be paid.

“The average unfunded liability in the US is now at $ 938,000 per taxpayer. Anyone who thinks US debt can be solved with economic growth, new debt or printing more dollars is an idiot. US Empire will default,” he tweeted.

In his previous tweets Dotcom cited Russia’s finance minister saying that the country had reduced its investment in US assets, and considered the US dollar a “risky tool for payments.” The businessman urged people to watch the greenback when China starts dumping its holdings of the US Treasury securities.

The German-Finnish entrepreneur is currently living in New Zealand under residency permission. US authorities are currently seeking to extradite Kim Dotcom to the US on fraud charges related to Megaupload. Dotcom rejects all of the accusations.

Last month, the New Zealand Court of Appeals upheld the lower court’s earlier ruling to hand Dotcom over to US authorities. Kim’s lawyer is planning to appeal the decision to the country’s Supreme Court.

Defense Distributed, the 3D-printing gun activist group, has secured a settlement with the Department of State that will enable it to legally distribute its CAD files of firearms on its DEFCAD website, putting an end to a years-long lawsuit.

The group says it will resume publication on August 1, 2018, more than four years after its files were first removed.

“It’s just now black letter law that you can traffick in this information,” Cody Wilson, the group’s founder, told Ars, noting that substantially not much will change given that the files have been available on torrent sites for years.

Germans favor withdrawal of US troops, not paying more for US ‘protection’ – poll https://briefnews.eu/germans-favor-withdrawal-of-us-troops-not-paying-more-for-us-protection-poll/ https://briefnews.eu/germans-favor-withdrawal-of-us-troops-not-paying-more-for-us-protection-poll/#respond Thu, 12 Jul 2018 07:24:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/germans-favor-withdrawal-of-us-troops-not-paying-more-for-us-protection-poll/ Almost every second German favors the withdrawal of US forces based there, according to a poll taken prior to the NATO summit, at which Donald Trump accused Berlin of relying on Washington’s protection and not contributing enough.

Some 42 percent of Germans are ready to see 35,000 US troops return home, a new YouGov poll, conducted on behalf of the German Press Agency, revealed. Only 37 percent wanted to see US troops stay in Germany in some capacity. The remaining 21 percent did not decide.

The call for withdrawal is especially strong among left-leaning voters, with 67 supporting the move. Some 55 percent of Alternative for Germany (AfD) right-wing backers also called for the removal of US forces. The Greens stand 48 percent in support of ending the US presence in Germany.

The US troops served as a guarantor of West Germany’s security during the Cold War. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the US refused to abandon its bases in a unified Germany and kept thousands of troops at the heart of Europe. With the ongoing changes in the transatlantic alliance driven by Donald Trump’s determination to cut spending on military support of US allies, the administration has reportedly hinted that it might be ready to reduce troops in Germany.

“Germany does a lot for NATO,” Chancellor Angela Merkel said at the ongoing summit in Brussels, after Trump accused Berlin of being held captive by Russia. “Germany is the second largest provider of troops, the largest part of our military capacity is offered to NATO and until today we have a strong engagement towards Afghanistan. In that we also defend the interests of the United States.”

On Wednesday, Trump once again called on the NATO allies to meet the 2 percent defense spending goals “immediately” (not by 2024, as originally agreed), to help the US share the burden of running the military alliance.

“We are protecting Germany, we are protecting France, we are protecting all of these countries and then numerous of the countries go out and make a pipeline deal with Russia where they are paying billions of dollars into the coffers of Russia. I think that is very inappropriate,” he noted at the summit.

  • Glassdoor’s annual 100 Highest-Rated CEOs report reveals both Apple’s Tim Cook and Google’s Sundar Pichai dropped heavily in the rankings, which are determined by anonymous employee feedback.
  • Cook, in particular ,dropped 43 spots from his place in last year’s report, distinguishing himself as the tech CEO with the biggest dip in rankings.
  • A Glassdoor spokesperson told Business Insider that employees cited Apple’s culture of secrecy and high stress for Cook’s drop…
  • …and Google’s growing corporate and bureaucratic work culture as the reasons behind the negative feedback for Pichai.

The past year hasn’t been smooth sailing for the tech industry.

On Tuesday, Glassdoor released its annual 100 Highest Rated CEOs report, showing that CEO Mark Zuckerberg dropped six spots in the rankings. It’s not particularly surprising, given Facebook’s scandalous year — but Zuck still got off early compared with some of his tech CEO peers.

  • The White House is said to be eyeing Singapore as a potential location for a summit between US President Donald Trump and and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
  • Singapore, as well as the Peace House near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) along the border between North and South Korea, are among the locations being considered.
  • However, some White House officials may prefer Singapore over the DMZ to avoid the potentially complicated optics of having a US president show up on North Korea’s doorstep.
  • Singapore maintains diplomatic relations with both the US and North Korea, and has been used as a neutral meeting place for other important Asian summits in the past.

At a hearing on Capitol Hill on Thursday, Energy Secretary Rick Perry expressed his willingness to help coal and nuclear plants out with an emergency order similar to one requested by energy firm FirstEnergy earlier this month.

Two weeks ago, FirstEnergy asked the Department of Energy (DOE) to invoke Section 202(c), which allows the department to order certain US power plants to keep running during wartime or during a natural disaster. The energy firm then filed for bankruptcy a few days later.

There has been skepticism within the DOE that Section 202(c) should be used for any purpose other than a disaster. But at Thursday’s hearing, Perry seemed to play up the dire state of the American grid throughout his comments in front of the US House of Representatives Subcommittee on Energy, where he took questions from representatives about the Trump administration’s budget request for 2019.
