The fake news originated from a phone prankster known under the moniker ‘Evgeniy Volnov,’ a Ukrainian citizen whose real name is Nikita Kuvikov, the investigators say. He is suspected of incitement to hatred, and could face up to five years behind bars.

The prankster “deliberately spread false information through the internet and media about the number of victims of the fire in Kemerovo, misleading the relatives of the dead and injured in an attempt to destabilize the situation in the region,” the investigators said in a statement on Wednesday. A court has subsequently arrested the prankster in absentia, and the Ukrainian national would get on the wanted list shortly, the investigators added.

Earlier, he posted an audio recording on his YouTube channel, in which he poses as an emergency services officer inquiring at local morgues over the space left for bodies there. The false rumors that eventually triggered public anger appear to be rooted in one such call, where Kuvikov tells a mortuary employee that they are about to receive “over 300 corpses.”

Despite the authorities rejecting such allegations, some locals urged for people to be allowed to check the morgues amid massive rallies in Kemerovo. The results of the inspection were reported to be consistent with the official count.

“I was at the morgue on Volgodradskaya Street. There are 67 bodies there, 64 of them are from the Winter Cherry [shopping center], they are charred. Three others are not related to that incident,” Alena Lenina told RT on Tuesday.

According to updated information, four people were killed during this spontaneous protest,” Zolotukhin said.

As the crowds of protesters clashed with the militants, “desperate civilians killed three bandits,” the spokesman added.

The militants refuse to let the civilians flee the area even when they offer money for permission, according to the official. They also confiscate the locals’ cars “for their own purposes,” create a food and drug deficit for civilians, and prohibit the use of radio, TV and cell phones.

The armed groups still refuse to observe the ceasefire and continue to sabotage the humanitarian operation, ignoring the calls of the Russian Reconciliation Center called for militants to let civilians leave the area. During the third daily humanitarian pause the militants’ attacks were repelled three times by Syrian government forces, according to the Russian military.

However, since the introduction of a daily five-hour humanitarian pause on February 27 aimed to avoid civilian casualties, people still have not managed to flee the conflict zone due to the constant militant fire.

“The disruption of the humanitarian operation occurs because of the illegal armed groups. The militants still do not observe the ceasefire and do not allow the civilian population to leave the dangerous zone,” the official said. He added that in the past 24 hours the number of civilians calling to help them to flee the militant-controlled area has rapidly risen.

On Saturday, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution proposing a 30-day humanitarian ceasefire in Syria. The ceasefire does not apply to members of the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS), Al-Nusra Front or any other terrorist organizations. After criticizing the first draft of the document, Russia reiterated its earlier accusations during the final discussions, accusing the West of conducting a “propaganda campaign” against the government forces battling terrorists in Eastern Ghouta.

Two US army pilots have been killed in a helicopter crash during training over the Californian desert, the Pentagon has announced.

The AH-64 Apache chopper attached to the Army’s 4th Infantry Division based out of Fort Carson, Colorado crashed in the California desert during a regular training flight. Both the pilot and the co-pilot were killed, Lt. Col. Jason S. Brown, an Army spokesman at the Pentagon, told Fox News.

“The cause is currently under investigation and next-of-kin notifications are ongoing, therefore we can provide no further details at this time,” he said.

The pair were flying a “readiness training exercise” at the time of the crash near the National Training Center at Fort Irwin in California, another US official noted. Saturday’s crash is the first fatal incident that struck the US Armed Forces in 2018.

At least 6 people have been reported killed and 9 injured in a vehicle attack near the World Trade Center memorial in lower Manhattan, New York City. Police have the driver in custody and are investigating the attack as terrorism.

Police said that a vehicle entered the bike path “a few blocks north of Chambers Street” where it “struck multiple people.” They added there there are “several” fatalities and “numerous” people injured.

A person in a truck reportedly ran over some pedestrians and bicyclists, and then opened gunfire.

The NYPD said the vehicle continued driving south on the path until it struck another vehicle. Then, the suspect left the vehicle “displaying imitation firearms” and was shot by police officers before being taken into custody.

The incident is being investigated as a possible terrorism attack, an anonymous law enforcement source told Reuters.

Fox News and CNN have reported the suspect yelled, “Allah akbar,” Arabic for “God is great,” before being taken into custody.

The FBI is now treating the incident as a terrorist attack, according to CNN.

Police say there is no longer a threat to the public.

The White House has confirmed that President Donald Trump was briefed on the incident.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and Governor Andrew Cuomo headed over to the scene of the crime, where they were briefed on the incident alongside New York Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill, the Washington Post reported.

Police told residents to avoid West Street from Barclay Street to a Christopher Street, citing an “ongoing investigation” and also instructed locals to “expect many emergency personnel in the area.”

There were initial reports of gunfire. Police sources told the New York Post that at least two people were fatally shot in Lower Manhattan Tuesday afternoon by a gunman firing from his truck.

A video taken at the scene shows multiple injured bikers on the ground. The poster said they they were hit by a truck.

Facebook has implemented its Safety Check feature.

Witnesses saw a truck hit several people, the Associated Press reported. An AP photographer reported seeing two motionless bodies covered with tarps.

“What happened was there was a car crash… he came out of one of the cars. He had two guns. He was running around Chambers and somebody started to chase him,” a 14-year-old student at the nearby Stuyvesant High School told the Post. “I heard four to six gunshots – everybody starts running.”
