Damien Chazelle‘s Neil Armstrong biopic First Man features exciting sequences and wonderful performances from Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy. But this space adventure never really gets off the ground.

What do you know about Neil Armstrong? I’m positive the number one answer to this question, for virtually anyone, is: “He’s the first man to set foot on the moon.” But what do you really know about him? While watching First Man, it occurred to me that I knew almost nothing about one of the most famous men in the history of the world, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. That gives Damien Chazelle’s new Armstrong biopic an advantage – here’s the story you never learned about the man you never really knew.

Armstrong was notoriously guarded in real life, and only agreed to participate in one biography based on his exploits – First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong, by James R. Hansen. Hansen’s book serves as the launch pad for Chazelle’s film, with Spotlight screenwriter Josh Singer filling in the gaps. As told by First Man, Armstrong was a man wracked with quiet grief. The story kicks off as Armstrong (Ryan Gosling) and his wife Janet (Claire Foy) suffer the loss of their 2-year-old daughter, who succumbs to a brain tumor. We see Armstrong pouring over cancer research, taking meticulous, scientific logs of his daughter’s treatments. And then, she’s gone – lowered into the earth in a tiny coffin. Armstrong quietly puts his log books away, and then breaks down in wracking sobs. It’s the last real sign of outward emotion he’ll show for almost the entire film.

From here, Armstrong joins the Gemini program, which will eventually pave the way for the Apollo program, which will eventually land him on the moon. But before he can get to that lunar surface, he has to go through a series of terrifying, death-courting missions that take him further and further into space. First Man is committed to reminding its audience just how downright terrifying and deadly all this was, and Chazelle stages one anxiety-inducing sequence after another – the tiny tin-can capsules Armstrong and company are blasting off in shake rattle and roll (those easily susceptible to motion sickness should brace themselves).

Through it all, Armstrong remains haunted by not just the death of his daughter, but also the deaths of his fellow astronauts. One after another, people come into Armstrong’s life, only to die in some terrible accident. Death is a practically a supporting character in this film. It’s a fascinating approach to Armstrong as a character – he never externalizes his thoughts on death and grief, but Chazelle finds ways to portray them all the same. Gosling does a great job conveying all this, using a quiet, measured way of speaking. Even when he’s angry he holds it all in, the fire quietly simmering behind his eyes.

All of this is great, as is Claire Foy as Armstrong’s long suffering wife, desperate for her husband to just reach out and share his emotions. And yet, First Man is oddly listless. Chazelle is taking an old fashioned storytelling approach here, but it backfires and renders much of the film inert. The frequent deadly trips serve to shake things up, but in between, there’s an inertia that seems misplaced in a film all about slipping the surly bonds of earth. Chazelle’s curious directorial decision to shoot almost the entire film in extreme close-up doesn’t help. Perhaps the director was going for a more intimate, claustrophobic feel, but the end result is distracting. We spend so much time glued to Gosling and Foy’s faces that we start to wonder what the heck is going out outside the frame.

Just when I was ready to write First Man off, the film finally gets to the moon landing, and what a sight it is. This extended sequence (see it in IMAX if you can, please) is stunning, and worth the price of admission alone. The whole film has been building towards this, and even though we know exactly what’s going to happen, it’s hard not to watch with baited breath. Spoiler alert: Neil Armstrong walks on the moon. Chazelle stages this with cuts back and forth between point-of-view shots, putting us literally inside Armstrong’s helmet, and shots of the astronaut strolling across the vast, dead lunar surface, the sky pitch-black in the background. Singer’s script then brings it all back home with a heartbreaking moment where Armstrong confronts his daughter’s death for the first time in years. It recasts the entire historical event – and Armstrong – in an entirely new light.

Since the moon landing comes at the tail end of the film, it will likely be the thing that sticks with most viewers, and in essence makes First Man a memorable film. It’s a pity most of the material before it fails to reach such lofty heights.

Meghan Markle, despite her Hollywood credentials, has a penchant for small, personal gifts, she has revealed in an interview.

The Suits actress, 35, who is dating Britain’s fifth in line to the throne, Prince Harry, 32, likes a hand written note.

She even told how she keeps a note from her father in a jewellery box because it is so precious to her.

“I think handwritten notes are a lost art form. When I booked my first [TV] pilot, my dad wrote me a letter that I still have,” Meghan told Good Housekeeping. 

“The idea of someone taking the time to put pen to paper is really special.”

Has Prince Harry been writing love notes to the actress?

If his previous behaviour is anything to go by he may well have been.

The Army Widows Association received a note from Prince Harry, which they then posted to their Twitter page.

The note began: “Hi Guys, I just wanted to put a note with all your tickets to say how much William, Catherine and I are looking forward to seeing you.”

The Prince added: “I know it’s Buckingham Palace but please don’t worry about dressing up, there’s no need, I won’t tell if you don’t!”

Since the Prince is clearly practiced in charming note writing, no doubt any letters to Meghan would help sweep the actress off her feet.

Meghan also told the magazine about her penchant for wearing leather trousers.

Although her dismissal of clothes created from meat-industry by products doesn’t bear out to her diet – as the actress likes to roast a chicken.

Once upon a time, Life would have been made for a sack of pennies on a set made out of cardboard and released as the bottom half of a double bill alongside whatever Roger Corman was making that year. Take away the modern window dressing and you’re left with one the great B-movie templates: there is a spaceship and there is a monster on the spaceship and everything does not go well on that spaceship.

Life takes that template and pretties it up. There are movie stars and expensive special effects and a thick layer of Hollywood gloss, but the finished film cannot hide its origins: this is schlock in an Armani suit, junkfood beneath filet mignon. And that’s perfectly fine.

Director Daniel Espinosa‘s science fiction horror movie seemingly wants to be the halfway point between Alien and Gravity and it mostly succeeds in blending extraterrestrial menace and more down-to-earth (in a manner of speaking) mayhem. It’s never as scary as the former or as intense as the latter, but it certainly gets the job done. There are plenty of thrills to be found in watching a team of astronauts battle a bloodthirsty alien beastie while just trying to get by in a pressurized tube floating through a vacuum that refuses to support any and all life.

Of course, those astronauts do bring all of this on themselves. The six men and women on board the International Space Station intercept a probe returning soil samples from Mars and make the greatest discovery in the history of science: biological life from another planet! So they get to work studying their new specimen, watching as “Calvin” grows from a collection of biological cells into something a bit bigger. And then a bit bigger. And then…well, you can surely see where this is going and how it can go so horribly for everyone involved.

While the basic set-up is pure ’50s, the actual execution of Life is torn straight from the ’80s. The R-rating, nasty violence, and general sense of giddy nihilism suggest a movie that should fall right in line with bonafide classics like The Thing and cult classics like Lifeforce. Perhaps the most surprising and, if we’re being honest, entertaining things about Life is how it cuts through its cast like butter, giving even the most sympathetic characters gruesome demises that look painful and horrible. The screenplay by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick shows no mercy. Whether you avert your eyes or chuckle will be a matter of your mileage with this kind of material.

However, the film’s look is pure 2017 and that’s where the B-movie formula hiccups. With its lengthy, digitally stitched shots, cast of movie stars, and CGI monster, Life needs to serve two masters – the movie its makers probably wanted to make and the movie Sony wanted to put into theaters to achieve maximum box office potential. When the film is being a straightforward creature feature, it’s intense and nasty and a great bit of fun. When it pauses for extended conversations to give fine actors like Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, and Ryan Reynolds an opportunity to stretch their muscles, you can’t help but wish that everyone would get this show on the road. While the actors are certainly likable, the film always, without fail, falls out of step whenever the characters stop focusing on the problem at hand. These performers are tons of fun to watch when they’re running and dying and screaming – melancholy readings of Goodnight Moon (seriously) don’t quite work.

Life is a pretty good movie made with skill by a solid filmmaker, but the 80-minute version released 30 years ago with a practical monster is probably a beloved cult gem getting a Shout! Factory Blu-ray special edition in an alternate 2017. However, this dimension’s version of the film does conclude on a high note, with the kind of ending that will infuriate as many people as it delights. In the case of this reviewer, the final 15 minutes ensured that I left the theater feeling, well, high on Life.
