Pope Francis © Gonzalo Fuentes

The pontiff likens homosexuality to a modern – and apparently dangerous – trend in his new book, ‘The Strength of a Vocation’, which is set to be released Monday in 10 languages.

“In our societies it even seems that homosexuality is fashionable and that mentality, in some way, also influences the life of the church,” Francis wrote. “Therefore, the Church recommends that people with that kind of ingrained tendency should not be accepted into the ministry or consecrated life.”

The Pope advised that the Church, which has been tainted by numerous sexual scandals, must urge homosexual priests to be “impeccably responsible” and avoid “scandalizing either their communities or the faithful holy people of God.”

“It’s better for them to leave the ministry or the consecrated life rather than to live a double life,” he stressed.

While the Vatican prohibits sexual activity between members of the same sex, it has also called for tolerance against members of the LGBT community. In 2005, the Vatican banned gays and all those with “homosexual tendencies or support the so-called ‘gay culture’” from entering the seminaries and holy orders.

Twitter on fire after Pope Francis reportedly tells a gay man that ‘God made him like this’

In late August this year, Pope Francis got into hot water over his comments regarding gay issues. Speaking to a reporter, he said that parents whose children have homosexual tendencies should seek out the help of psychiatrists. The Vatican later did some damage control, claiming the pontiff did not mean it and removed those words from the official transcript.

Majestic reported a surge in sales of sherry by more than 40% this year

We tend to associate the tipple with our parents, grandparents and maiden aunts.

Ask most people to give an opinion and they will dismiss sherry as something sweet and alcoholic to be sipped under sufferance or poured into a retro trifle.

However after three decades in the doldrums there are signs that this type of wine, which comes only from a triangle of land in southern Spain, is enjoying a long overdue revival.

Majestic reports a surge in sales of sherry of more than 40 per cent this year, while demand for the most expensive bottles is even higher.

The boom is attributed to young people seeking out new tastes, who are discovering the joys of this very underrated and misunderstood drink.

Sherry originates from a region in southern Spain, and legally cannot be produced anywhere else

We are seeing the influence of tapas bars where people are trying sherry and realising it’s such a food-friendly wine

And for many who are not yet familiar with its charms it may come as a surprise to learn that most varieties of sherry are dry and should be consumed not lukewarm from the sideboard but chilled.

“We are seeing the influence of tapas bars where people are trying sherry and realising it’s such a food-friendly wine,” says Jack Merrylees, Majestic’s sherry expert.

“That’s really driving increasing demand for bone-dry, ice-cold varieties.

“We already know how drier styles of wine such as sauvignon blanc are very popular and we are seeing the same trend with sherry. So people are going for Fino and Manzanilla varieties, which are very dry and great with foods like olives and cheese.

“We are also finding that because drinkers are waking up to the idea of sherry being served chilled it is being enjoyed all year round rather than just at Christmas.”

Sherry is a fortified wine and its name comes the anglicisation of Jerez, a city in Andalusia

Sherry is a fortified wine and the name comes from the Anglicisation of Jerez, the city which forms part of the so-called Sherry Triangle along with Sanlucar de Barrameda and El Puerto de Santa Maria, in Andalusia.

Here summer temperatures of up to 40C are countered by cooling Atlantic breezes providing perfect conditions for the grapes.

Legally sherry cannot be produced anywhere else in the world.

There are several different styles with the common denominator being the addition of grape spirit to the base wine to increase alcohol content.

Although some sherries are dark in appearance they are all made from white grapes.

Sherry sales in the UK are about 10 million litres a year, and about a third of the global total

Sherry has been produced in the region for more than 2,000 years and by the end of the 16th century was regarded as the world’s finest wine.

Among the spoils that Sir Francis Drake brought back after defeating the Spanish Armada were 2,900 barrels of sherry – or butts as they are properly known.

Sherry was especially popular in Britain because the addition of spirit made the wine more stable, long-lasting and easier to transport and store in the days before refrigeration.

Consumption peaked in the late 1970s when the fashion was for sweet versions known as creams, which were developed in the 19th century for British palates. These are made by adding other types of sherry, syrups or sugar.

Sadly, over time Britain’s love affair with the drink cooled and all but withered. Some of the commercial sherry was of low quality. Sales slumped and the future for sherry production looked bleak.

Around Jerez, vineyards were abandoned, bodegas closed and unemployment rose sharply.

However sherry has slowly been making a comeback fuelled by the arrival of drier and more upmarket varieties.

Sales in the UK are about 10 million litres a year (about a third of the global total) and in 2016 consumption here rose for the first time since the turn of the century.

It is now claimed to be the hipster’s tipple of choice.

The finest types can be aged for more than 25 years but it is still possible to pick up a decent bottle for just under a tenner.

Wine writer Jamie Goode says: “Sherry is one of the treasures of the wine world and I love it,” he says.

“For a while it has been under-appreciated.”

Unique to sherry is the presence of flor – a yeast-like growth that helps protect the wine from contact with air (oxidisation) in the barrel and gives sherry a distinctive taste.

Goode adds: “Traditionally sherry is thought of as a sweet wine but most of the serious examples and the ones the Spanish usually consume are dry. It is a drink that is severely under-priced when you consider the whole production process and the long ageing in oak casks.

“Sherry got into trouble in the 1970s when it started going downmarket to appeal to a mass audience. I’m delighted it is bouncing back and that’s largely because of the consistent quality of the wines. People are bored with standardised, over-marketed bland food and drink and want something authentic and different.”

Whisper it but 2018 could be the year we finally say olé for sherry again.

James Cameron ‘IRRITATED’ by Titanic haters: 'It's become fashionable like with Star Wars' https://briefnews.eu/james-cameron-irritated-by-titanic-haters-its-become-fashionable-like-with-star-wars/ https://briefnews.eu/james-cameron-irritated-by-titanic-haters-its-become-fashionable-like-with-star-wars/#respond Tue, 08 Aug 2017 21:42:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/james-cameron-irritated-by-titanic-haters-its-become-fashionable-like-with-star-wars/

The 1997 classic may be the second highest-grossing film of all time and have won 11 Oscars, but it’s still cool to hate Titanic.

Now in a recent interview, director Cameron was asked if the trend irritated him.

Speaking with Empire, he said: “It became fashionable to say you didn’t like Star Wars for a while.

“I think Freddie Mercury said in his bicycle song: ‘I didn’t like Star Wars, but I just wanna ride my bicycle.’”

Cameron continued: “Sold three million on that one. So yeah. sure.

“But it’s a total revision. And its mostly a revision coming from men, by the way.

The interviewer then asked if he meant this was because of Titanic’s love story.

The director replied: “Absolutely. I always say that the re-release of Titanic in 3D was so that men could cry and be seen ‘cause the glasses covered it up.”

Cameron said: “I have to say that I felt that George’s group of six films had more innovative visual imagination.

“This film was more of a retrenchment to things you had seen before and characters you have seen before and it took a few baby steps forward with new characters.

“So for me, the jury’s out. I want to see where they’re going with it.”

Amazon’s Echo Look app is ready for your fashionable selfies https://briefnews.eu/amazons-echo-look-app-is-ready-for-your-fashionable-selfies/ https://briefnews.eu/amazons-echo-look-app-is-ready-for-your-fashionable-selfies/#respond Mon, 22 May 2017 23:26:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/amazons-echo-look-app-is-ready-for-your-fashionable-selfies/

Amazon still hasn’t said when it plans to ship its new Echo Look camera, but it appears that will be happening very soon. The company has started rolling out companion iOS and Android apps for the device, which costs $ 200 and is only available via invite to Prime customers — at least for the time being. To refresh your mind, Echo Look is an Alexa-powered camera for people who want to take pictures or videos of their daily outfits, enhanced by an artificial intelligence algorithm that’ll learn your habits and make clothes recommendations based on that.

The iOS and Android apps are going to bring all of that together, putting your very own lookbook in your pocket. Naturally, you’ll be able to share your pictures with friends, family or other loved ones — if you’re into that sort of thing. You can download the Echo Look application from the App Store and Google Play right now, though there’s not much you can do without the device itself.

The Style Guru Transforming Techies From Frumpy to Fashionable https://briefnews.eu/the-style-guru-transforming-techies-from-frumpy-to-fashionable/ https://briefnews.eu/the-style-guru-transforming-techies-from-frumpy-to-fashionable/#respond Mon, 10 Apr 2017 05:02:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-style-guru-transforming-techies-from-frumpy-to-fashionable/ Something is missing from the Giorgio Armani store in San Jose, and not just the price tags. Sandwiched between Versace, Balenciaga and other tongue-twisting fashion linchpins, this tony boutique sports the sleek minimalism of an Apple Store. But then Joseph Rosenfeld saunters in, peppy as a cheerleader. All is now right.

Today at the high-watt luxury section of the Valley Fair Mall, the 47-year-old fashionista is easy to spot: bright blue socks, figure-hugging McQueen slacks and, as a final touch, an embroidered pink daffodil on a Dolce & Gabbana jean jacket. High fashion and high tech don’t usually go together, but Rosenfeld quietly sits at the intersection of these two worlds. He may not exactly be a brand name in Milan or Paris, but he’s transformed dozens of Bay Area techies from frumpy to fashionable through his What Not to Wear-like makeover, the “sticker shock” fees of which run in the thousands. His high-wattage Rolodex of clients includes high-powered tech attorneys, graphic designers from Apple, senior engineers at Google, über rich venture capitalists at the prominent firms along Sand Hill Road, wives of tech billionaires, etc. He’s a little clammed up when it comes to actually name-dropping clients, but some call him the “image maestro” of Silicon Valley, says former client Zile Rehman, the longtime IT guy at Nyansa, a software company in Palo Alto. Rosenfeld took him “out of my fashion doldrums.”

Two years ago, Silicon Valley held its first cutting-edge Fashion Week with 3-D printed garb, gadget couture and drones flying down the runway.

Others praise Rosenfeld for his discreetness — which is perhaps why none of those aforementioned tech celebs responded to our requests for comment. His makeovers are extensive for each client, spanning all four seasons. From spring to winter, Rosenfeld scours clothing racks — not runways — from San Francisco to London, adorning his nerdy, shop-a-phobe startupppers with cashmere hoodies, Lanvin sneakers and Gucci loafers that turn up the glitz but still suit the laid-back Valley ethos. “It’s not about the clothes. It’s about the powerful image that you portray,” Rosenfeld says, adjusting the thick black frames that overwhelm his thin face.

People like Rosenfeld comprise part of the increasingly large posse of image consultants and coaches that tech execs now sport. According to TrackMaven, 39 percent of CEOs used an executive coach in the last 12 months, a proportion that increased dramatically as their companies grow to scale, and between 2009 and 2014, the personal shopping industry grew more than four percent to $ 762 million and more than 28,000 personal shoppers in the U.S., according to research company IBISWorld.

Clothing profile merge

After all — “the most fashionable accessory of all time was invented in Cupertino, more than whatever you got out of Prada or Gucci,” says Chris Lindland of Silicon Valley Fashion Week, referring to the iPhone. The craze is, indeed, building: LA-based Snapchat’s Evan Spiegel and Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer both graced the glossy pages of Vogue between 2013 and 2015. Square CEO Jack Dorsey regularly sports Hermès suits while Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg opts for Prada ankle boots. Two years ago, Silicon Valley held its first cutting-edge Fashion Week with 3-D printed garb, gadget couture and drones flying down the runway. A year later, the fashion event of the year, the Met Gala in New York, chose the theme Manus x Machina; celebrities graced the red carpet in fake steel, glitter and techno-inspired regalia. But here, Rosenfeld is not pulling high-concept garb for his clients. He balances practicality with precision, considering his clients’ eyebrow color and even freckles into account when curating a new wardrobe or color palette.

Joseph half profile

The matter-of-factness emerges in Rosenfeld’s telling of his personal story, too, though it’s riddled with darkness. Rosenfeld grew up with deeply seated insecurities in Chicago, stemming, he says, from a childhood rape from his female babysitter and the untimely death of his father. His adolescence, he says, was marked by a “pre-suicidal” state (“because I never had the guts to actually do it”) and no friends (“people treated me like I had the plague”). While we can’t confirm all the details, Rosenfeld speaks openly about this, not just with me; the story is told in his new book. But Rosenfeld’s self-esteem picked up when he grabbed a 1985 copy of the Official Preppy Handbook which taught him the basics of style, fashion and the golden rule: never wear white after Labor Day. After dropping out of both Drexel and DePaul University, he worked as a sales associate at Neiman Marcus and Bigsby & Kruthers before, in true Valley fashion, starting his own venture in 2001 — a style consulting firm in San Jose.

However, his firm is still at odds with the long-standing dogma in Silicon Valley: minimalism. Go little, or go to New York. Jobs’ black turtlenecks; Zuckerberg’s gray hoodie — dressing to impress means to dressing down with jeans and sometimes ill-fitting, untucked shirts, says fashion expert Tosha Clemens. There’s no software update for that. Back at Armani, the sleek-suited cashier tells me Rosenfeld is a regular. Rosenfeld eyes a few soft, handwoven sweaters, like he’s admiring Monet and Van Gogh at the Louvre. He feels right at home amidst the mannequins and crammed racks of tailored blazers and trim trousers. You wouldn’t be caught dead wearing a hoodie here.
