Stewart Rhodes, founder of the citizen militia group known as the Oath Keepers speaks during a rally outside the White House in Washington, on June 25, 2017.

  • A judge refused to delay the upcoming trial of Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes.
  • Judge Amit Mehta said arguments for the delay were "incorrect" and "bewildering."
  • Mehta also declined to allow Rhodes to fire his lawyers, creating a potentially awkward arrangement.

From the outset of a court hearing Wednesday, Judge Amit Mehta made himself clear: He was not amused with Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes' request to fire his defense team and delay his upcoming trial on charges related to the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.

In a nearly 15-minute diatribe, Mehta denounced Rhodes over "incorrect and, frankly, bewildering" claims the far-right group's former leader made a day earlier in a request to replace his defense lawyers and push back his trial — currently set to start on September 26 — by three months. Mehta, an Obama appointee confirmed in 2014, flatly rejected those requests following an extended rebuke of Rhodes' suggestion that he could not receive a fair trial.

"The very first allegation is that somehow Mr. Rhodes is not receiving a fair trial, and that is unequivocally false," Mehta said.

Mehta convened the hearing a day after Rhodes, in a 20-page court filing a day earlier, asked to replace his Dallas-based defense team with a new lawyer, Ed Tarpley. Rhodes is set to stand trial alongside four other members of the Oath Keepers accused of plotting to storm the Capitol on January 6, 2021, and disrupt the certification of the 2020 election results.

Rhodes cited a "breakdown" in communication with the attorneys who have represented him since his January incident on a seditious conspiracy charge and other allegations tied to the Capitol attack. Through Tarpley, Rhodes argued he has still yet to receive most of the discovery — or relevant evidence — from the Justice Department.

But Mehta said that, until Tuesday's filing, he had not heard a "peep" from Rhodes about any "disenchantment" with his defense team. The judge said Rhodes' defense lawyers for the past nine months, James Lee Bright and Phillip Linder, have displayed not only competence but also leadership in helping other Oath Keepers and their lawyers ahead of the trial, which is expected to last several weeks.

"Not once has he complained one iota about his lawyers," Mehta said.

"Mr. Linder and Mr. Bright are going to be at that table representing Mr. Rhodes at trial in three weeks," he added. "Period. Full stop. End of story."

Mehta suggested that Rhodes would have more easily communicated with lawyers based in the Washington, DC, area, where he has been detained since January but instead hired the Texas-based duo of Bright and Linder.

"That was his choice," Mehta said.

Mehta similarly dismissed Rhodes' claims that he lacked access to crucial evidence in his case. Rhodes, he said, has received "every dispensation," including biweekly sessions in which he is allowed to review evidence at the courthouse for hours.

"No other defendant is getting that kind of accommodation. No one," Mehta said, adding that federal prosecutors have "bent over backwards, as far as I'm concerned," to provide Rhodes with discovery to which he's entitled.

Mehta's ruling thrust Linder and Bright into the awkward position of continuing to represent Rhodes after he, with Tarpley, publicly criticized their work in a court filing. Bright appeared particularly concerned about the future of the engagement, saying the Tuesday filing suggested a "lack of trust."

"Perhaps it is a broken relationship, your honor," Bright said.

"I truly wish him the best," he added. "I've given seven months of my life to Mr. Rhodes. I've missed sporting events. I've missed time with my family for a man I don't know. I'm prepared to come to DC for six weeks away from my children."

At one point, Bright said he didn't want to work alongside Tarpley. But Mehta said he would allow Tarpley to take part in the case so long as Rhodes and the other lawyers agreed.

"We can make room," Mehta said. "We have enough tables."

Mehta said he would not allow Rhodes to wreak "havoc" in the case or his calendar as he and other judges in Washington, DC, confront a flood of prosecutions stemming from the Capitol attack. If he granted a delay, Mehta said, his schedule would not open for Rhodes' trial until next summer.

"January 6 has created a massive traffic jam of cases," Mehta said. "That is just the reality of it."

  • Protesters have clashed with police in Brussels while demonstrating against a UN migration pact.
  • The United Nations signed the first ever international deal on the migration crisis, despite opposition from the US.
  • The “March against Marrakech” pledged to turn a “political crisis into the awakening of our people.”

Police in the Belgium capital were forced to use water cannons and tear gas on activists protesting against a UN migration pact signed on Monday.

Reuters said the protesters were far-right sympathizers who had descended on the European Commission headquarters in Brussels as part of the “March against Marrakech” demonstration.

The United Nations signed the first ever international deal on the migration crisis in the Moroccan city earlier this week. It promised a global approach to better managing migration, despite vociferous opposition from the US, which said last year that it interferes with American sovereignty.

March against Marrakech’s Facebook page said 12,000 planned to attend the demonstration. “We can’t just stand by and watch, we need to show the will of the majority,” it said. “Let’s turn this political crisis into the awakening of our people.”

But the protests appeared to spill over into violence as demonstrators clashed with police. Scroll on for some of the most dramatic photos from the protest in Brussels:

But the protests soon began to turn ugly. Here demonstrators are trying to topple an EU flag outside the European Commission headquarters.

Mounted police attempted to control the crowds.

The ultra-nationalist crowds that flocked to Poland for its independence day march were seen performing Nazi salutes and burning flares at the event attended by staggering 200,000 people. Police, however, stood idly by.

Crowds of people, including various far-right groups, unleashed a sea of fire and smoke on the streets and squares of the Polish capital of Warsaw during an event marking a centenary of Poland’s independence on Sunday. Videos posted on social media show a Warsaw square being lit with thousands of red flares burnt by the marchers.

Described last year as the largest far-right gathering in the world, participants apparently felt quite comfortable on the Warsaw streets. Photos posted on social media showed members of the Polish National Radical Camp (ONR), which is often described as a neo-Nazi group,  waving their flags as they took part in the celebration.

Members of another ultra-nationalist organization called the All-Polish Youth were seen unfurling a large banner with their symbols during the march.  According to some reports, they also burned an EU flag.

Flares and firecrackers were also seen being thrown around in the streets, even though pyrotechnics were supposed to be prohibited at the rally. Eyewitnesses said that police ignored the antics.

Slogans such as “USA, empire of evil” and “Poland, white and Catholic” were shouted. However, Polish nationalists were not the only ones to attend the controversial event. Side by side with the ONR marched Italian neo-fascists from the radical Forza Nuova movement.

Some of them were wearing balaclavas while others were seen openly performing Nazi salutes.

Such actions prompted no response from the Polish authorities: there are no reports of any detentions or instances of police interference during the march. The Polish police were on strike at the time of the event and warned in advance that they would not be able to provide security for it.

The Polish government also made an unprecedented move by not only sanctioning the event but also taking part in it. President Andrzej Duda, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and the leader of the ruling conservative Law and Justice party, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, all participated in a joint march.

Kaczynski, who is considered to be one of the most powerful men in Poland and is known for his uncompromising views, called the march a “great success,” according to Radio Poland.

Since 2009, the celebration of Polish Independence Day has become a rallying point for far-right organizations from all over Europe, some of which openly describe themselves as fascists or Nazis. This year marks the centenary of the country’s independence, an occasion which is expected to draw massive crowds.

Last year, the march attracted 60,000 people, making it the largest far-right gathering in the world. The event included explicitly white supremacist symbols and banners with slogans such as “White Europe” and “Refugees get out!” The rally was cited in a European Parliament resolution that encouraged member states to crack down on far-right groups, but the leadership of Poland seem to have other plans.

There was a last-minute attempt by the mayor of Warsaw to ban the march, but a court overturned his decision and allowed the event to go ahead – despite the fact that months of negotiations had failed to result in any agreement on key arguments between the state and representatives of the rally.

The final negotiations took place late on Friday night. The demonstrators were represented by Robert Bakiewicz of the National Radical Camp, an anti-Semitic group that traces its roots to an organization from the 1930s founded on the principles of Italian fascism.

The Polish leadership not only backtracked on its earlier position that the march could only take place if no banners were displayed, but now both the president and prime minister agreed to actually participate in the march.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki was recently involved in a scandal after secret recordings from 2013 were released, featuring him making anti-Semitic remarks.

If this was not enough to worry the citizens of Warsaw, the Polish police are currently on strike, and have stated that they will not be able to provide security for the event. This will leave many residents vulnerable to potential violence, particularly those who fail to comply with the demonstrators’ racial criteria.

While the Polish government has struggled with these groups in the past, and some are anticipating violence, the country has become a crucible for the European far-right in recent years, and Friday’s unprecedented agreements are sure to stoke the flames even more.

  • Far-right Congressman Jair Bolsonaro won nearly half the votes in Brazil’s first-round presidential election.
  • Bolsonaro won 46.3 percent of valid ballots, far ahead of leftist Fernando Haddad’s 29 percent but short of the outright majority needed to avoid a runoff election.
  • The two will face-off in a second round of voting on October 28.
  • Bolsonaro, who has vowed a brutal crackdown on crime and graft, gained momentum after a near-fatal stabbing at a rally one month ago that kept him from campaigning.

BRASILIA (Reuters) – Far-right Congressman and former Army captain Jair Bolsonaro won nearly half the votes in Brazil’s first-round presidential election on Sunday, marking a major shift to the right in Latin America’s largest nation fueled by voters’ anger at corruption.

In what is likely to be a deeply polarizing race, Bolsonaro, who has praised Brazil’s 1964-1985 military dictatorship, will face leftist Fernando Haddad, the former mayor of Sao Paulo, in a second round of voting on Oct. 28.

8 policemen injured as far-right gig turns violent in Germany (PHOTO, VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/8-policemen-injured-as-far-right-gig-turns-violent-in-germany-photo-video/ https://briefnews.eu/8-policemen-injured-as-far-right-gig-turns-violent-in-germany-photo-video/#respond Sun, 07 Oct 2018 17:31:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/8-policemen-injured-as-far-right-gig-turns-violent-in-germany-photo-video/

Eight officers were injured as a far-right rock concert in east-central Germany boiled over into scuffles with police. The event was disassembled an hour after the beginning.

Some 700 people descended on the market square of the German town of Apolda on Saturday, where an improvised concert under the motto “rock against the overflow of foreigners” started. The event apparently drew some neo-Nazis as the photos from the event show the participants giving Nazi salutes.

Some concert goers are said to have tried to force their way force through the police officers, who responded with pepper spray.

The event escalated as some crowd started pelting the law enforcement with bottles and stones. Some bottles were thrown from the roofs, according to authorities. Eight officers were injured, but none of them seriously.

The Interior Minister of the federal state of Thuringia said that Saturday’s “Nazi” violence was an “open attack” on democracy, adding that he was proud of the officers’ actions.

The same day Apolda saw a hundreds-strong counter-rally. The rock concert was initially supposed to be held at another small town called Magdala, but authorities did not give their permission, forcing its last-minute move to Apolda, according to local media.

Saxony police suspected of far-right links after leak of warrant for Chemnitz murder suspect https://briefnews.eu/saxony-police-suspected-of-far-right-links-after-leak-of-warrant-for-chemnitz-murder-suspect/ https://briefnews.eu/saxony-police-suspected-of-far-right-links-after-leak-of-warrant-for-chemnitz-murder-suspect/#respond Wed, 29 Aug 2018 20:48:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/saxony-police-suspected-of-far-right-links-after-leak-of-warrant-for-chemnitz-murder-suspect/ Police in the eastern state of Saxony have landed in hot water as an arrest warrant for one of the men suspected of fatally stabbing a German in the city of Chemnitz has been circulated online by far-right groups.

The regional police department in southeastern Germany has already been haunted by allegations of having links to, or at least sympathies for, some far-right groups.

An arrest warrant of one of the two suspects accused of killing a German man, 35, in Saxony’s Chemnitz has been circulating on the social networks’ pages of a local right-wing Pro Chemnitz group as well as of the anti-Islam PEGIDA movement and the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party since late Tuesday. The partially redacted document contained the personal details of the suspect, a 22-year-old Iraqi man, including his name and residential address, as well as names of the witnesses and a judge, the German media report. The paper also contains details of the incident itself.

Photos of the document without any redactions were also posted online by some far-right activists and even a German MP from the AfD party, Stephan Protschka. The original posts containing the confidential information have been eventually removed by the social networks’ administration. However, the information had been shared “more than a thousand times” by then, according to German media.

The regional interior ministry said it is “yet absolutely unclear, who might be responsible for the leak,” adding that the person responsible might not necessarily hold a position within law enforcement as the warrant was “distributed to all parties involved in the proceedings.”

According to the daily Die Welt, the list of people with access to the document includes defense lawyers, detention facility officials, the police department responsible for the detainee transfer, and a group of interpreters.

Still, the incident has led to renewed suspicions against the police. Saxony’s Deputy Prime Minister Martin Dulig, a Social Democrat, has denounced the leak as a “scandal.”
“It must be clear that some things within the police will no longer be tolerated,” Dulig told the broadcaster MDR, adding that “police officers cannot be let to believe that they can do some things, even though they know exactly that it is a criminal offense” and calling such behavior “outrageous.”

Police opened an investigation into the leaking of the confidential investigative document and violation of the investigatory privilege, which is a crime punishable by up to one year in jail in Germany.

German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer also called the leak “absolutely unacceptable”.
The AfD, meanwhile, drew attention to the content of the leaked document and said that the suspect was an “asylum seeker,” who “had a criminal record and was on probation.” The party also announced that it would hold a “march of silence” in Chemnitz on Saturday to “commemorate all victims of forced multiculturalization.”

The developments come following two days of riots in the Saxon city, which saw unrest between far-right protesters and leftists following the fatal stabbing. The anger and frustration were sparked by the death of a 35-year-old German in a brawl that involved around 10 people from “various nationalities.” An Iraqi and a Syrian have been arrested on suspicion of Sunday’s deadly stabbing.

Police in Saxony have already been involved in controversy as a camera team for the public ZDF broadcaster accused some officers of deliberately impeding their work at a PEGIDA demonstration in the state capital of Dresden earlier this month. Police denied all allegations by saying that the officers just did their duty. Later, it was, however, confirmed that one of the PEGIDA demonstrators who harassed the crew was also an off-duty police employee.

  • Steve Bannon is setting up a new foundation to bolster anti-EU populists in Europe.
  • The UK Independence Party (UKIP) has pledged to join it, The Independent reports.
  • The EU is reportedly spooked by the project, and it could have an impact on Brexit negotiations.
  • Layla Moran MP called it an “unholy alliance of racist charlatans across the Channel.”

Ukip has pledged to work with Steve Bannon’s new European alt-right movement, forging what critics have branded an “unholy alliance” to bring down the EU and fuel populism across the continent.

Mr Bannon, a former investment banker who founded the website Breitbart, has pledged to bolster the continent’s far right with a new foundation called The Movement that would dole out resources to eurosceptics and anti-EU populists.
