Frank Drake, astronomer famed for contributions to SETI, has died

On Friday, the family of astronomer Frank Drake announced that he passed away peacefully at 92 in his California home, near the site of his final academic position at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Drake made a number of contributions to radio astronomy, including serving as director of the Arecibo radio telescope facility. But Drake is probably best known for an equation that bears his name and his subsequent involvement in SETI efforts. His equation was the first significant attempt to estimate the probability of intelligent extraterrestrial life.

Drake did his PhD in radio astronomy, and his academic career continued with astronomy as a focus. That eventually brought him to the Arecibo observatory. Drake was involved in the observatory’s conversion from a military research site to a civilian, science-focused facility, and he later became its director.

But Drake always had a side hustle: the attempt to find other intelligent life in the Universe. His most prominent contribution in this area was the formulation of what’s now known as the Drake equation. It’s purportedly a calculation—plug in the probabilities of a handful of things like the frequency of exoplanets around stars and the probability of life forming spontaneously, and out would pop the overall number of intelligent civilizations in our galaxy.

Ricky Jay is one of those actors who you’d see popping up in the likes of The Prestige, Mystery Men and Boogie Nights, not a household name, but surely one of those people who made audience members go, “Hey, it’s that guy.” But outside of his career on film and television, Ricky Jay was a masterful magician, dubbed “the most gifted sleight of hand artist alive” by The New Yorker. Sadly, Jay has performed his last trick, as the character actor and illusionist has died at age 72.

News of Ricky Jay dead has been confirmed by the actor’s attorney Stan Coleman (via Deadline) after the actor died of natural causes on Saturday in Los Angeles. Jay’s manager also confirmed the news and added, “He was one of a kind. We will never see the likes of him again.”

Indeed, Ricky Jay was truly a unique talent. The man’s work as a character actor can’t go unnoticed with appearances in Tomorrow Never Dies, State and Main, The Great Buck Howard, not to mention the shows Deadwood and The X-Files under his belt. Perhaps one of his most memorable performances comes from his voiceover in the opening of Magnolia:

However, other work for the big screen included being a consultant when it came to the cons, tricks and magic of The Prestige, The Illusionist, Ocean’s 13, Heist, Sneakers and more. He even formed a company with collaborator Michael Weber called Deceptive Practices to better offer their expertise to film productions, including creating the wheelchair that kept Gary Sinise’s legs hidden in Forrest Gump. That’s because Ricky Jay is first and foremost, one of the most revered magicians in the world.

Ricky Jay dazzled people with his tricks. A fascinating profile from The New Yorker recalls this particular instance when Jay wowed a New Year’s Eve party with a mind-blowing trick:

“Deborah Baron, a screenwriter in Los Angeles, where Jay lives, once invited him to a New Year’s Eve dinner party at her home. About a dozen other people attended. Well past midnight, everyone gathered around a coffee table as Jay, at Baron’s request, did closeup card magic. When he had performed several dazzling illusions and seemed ready to retire, a guest named Mort said, “Come on, Ricky. Why don’t you do something truly amazing?”

Baron recalls that at that moment “the look in Ricky’s eyes was, like, ‘Mort—you have just fucked with the wrong person.’ ”

Jay told Mort to name a card, any card. Mort said, “The three of hearts.” After shuffling, Jay gripped the deck in the palm of his right hand and sprung it, cascading all fifty-two cards so that they travelled the length of the table and pelted an open wine bottle.

“O.K., Mort, what was your card again?”

“The three of hearts.”

“Look inside the bottle.”

Mort discovered, curled inside the neck, the three of hearts. The party broke up immediately.”

Ricky Jay’s tricks were front and center in three one-man shows, Ricky Jay and His 52 Assistants, Ricky Jay: On the Stem, and Ricky Jay: A Rogue’s Gallery, all of which were directed by filmmaker, author and playwright David Mamet. In fact, Mamet featured Jay in several of his films, including House of Games, The Spanish Prisoner, Things Change, Redbelt and State and Main. Having worked on The Spanish Prisoner, fellow magic aficionado and actor Steve Martin said, “I sort of think of Ricky as the intellectual élite of magicians. He’s expertly able to perform and yet he knows the theory, history, literature of the field.”

Two of the world’s most famous bitcoin investors, the Winklevoss twins, have now sued a longtime figure in the world of bitcoin, Charlie Shrem.

Shrem was released from prison in 2016 after he was convicted for aiding and abetting an unlicensed money-transfer business—sending $ 1 million in bitcoins that ended up on the notorious drug website, Silk Road.

According to the new lawsuit—which was filed in federal court in Manhattan in September 2018 and only recently unsealed—Winklevoss Capital Fund (WCF) hired Shrem in late 2012 to purchase bitcoins on its behalf.

The larger-than-life story of wrestler Andre the Giant gets the bio-doc treatment with HBO’s Andre the Giant. The new documentary from executive producer Bill Simmons chronicles the life and career of the late wrestler. Watch a new Andre the Giant trailer below.

André Roussimoff grew to be 6 foot 3 inches during his life (though sometimes billed as 7 ft 4 in), and he put his massive height to good use becoming famous wrestler and sometimes actor Andre the Giant. Health problems plagued Roussimoff for most of his adult life, and he died of congestive heart failure in 1993, at the age of 46. Now, Andre the Giant’s life is chronicled in the new HBO documentary Andre the Giant. Featuring interviews with Hulk Hogan, Robin Wright, Billy Crystal, Arnold Schwarzenegger and more, the doc provides an up-close-and-personal look at the late wrestler. And now there’s a new trailer for the film.

Here are some fun facts about Mr. The Giant:

  • During an interview with David Letterman, Andre bragged that he could drink ” 119 beers in a single session.” Wrestler Mike Graham later claimed he saw Andre consume 156 beers in one night.
  • When Andre the Giant was a kid, famed playwright Samuel Beckett used to give him rides to school.
  •  William Goldman, who wrote the book and the screenplay for The Princess Bride, created Fezzik specifically for Andre.

I don’t know if these details will be featured in the new doc, but the bottom line is, Andre the Giant lead a memorable life. Andre began exhibiting signs of gigantism in his early 20s. He started training to become a wrestler at age 17, before joining World Wrestling Entertainment in 1973. He quickly became a superstar, and a frequent rival of Hulk Hogan. “He is a big ugly goon and I want to squash his face.” Andre the Giant was a poet, folks.

“Everyone who ever crossed paths with him has an Andre story — and usually four or five,” says Andre the Giant executive producer Bill Simmons. “I’m delighted to join forces with [director] Jason Hehir and WWE so we can capture Andre’s amazing story once and for all.”

Keith Gregory, the suspected vandal, described by police as having no fixed abode, will appear at Westminster magistrates court on Monday.

The painting, formally known as, Mr and Mrs. William Hallett, which shows a young, wealthy couple walking in the countryside with a dog beside them, could potentially be fully restored.

“The damage is limited to two long scratches which have penetrated the paint layers but not the supporting canvas. The painting was removed from display and examined by the gallery’s conservators, who are now assessing next steps,” said a spokesperson for the National Gallery.

An eyewitness who posted about the incident on Reddit before the news broke, said the perpetrator was reported to have shouted that he had a bomb before defacing the canvas with a screwdriver and being overwhelmed by visitors and security.

Room 34, in which the painting is displayed, was recently featured in the Bond movie Skyfall, and the entire East Wing had to be evacuated, as experts rushed to study the damage.

According to Mark Bills, director of Gainsborough’s House, the 18th-century painter’s personal museum, who spoke to the Guardian, The Morning Walk is “one of Gainsborough’s great masterpieces,” demonstrating an “economy of brushstrokes” suggesting a “confident painter… at the height of his powers.”

“It’s amazing what conservators can do. You probably won’t see a difference. I’m relieved from what I’ve read it hasn’t caused any permanent damage,” added Bills.

Born in 1727, Thomas Gainsborough was in demand in his lifetime, receiving multiple royal commissions, and has since been hailed as the father of English landscape painting, although his portraits were significantly more lucrative.

The Morning Walk purchased by the National Gallery by Lord Rotschild for c30,000, equivalent to £770,000 today, and a significant amount at that time. Gainsborough’s most expensive painting, Portrait of Miss Read, was sold in an open auction.Later Mrs. William Villebois purchased it for £6.5m in 2011.

The favorite, famous target for art defacers is the Mona Lisa in the Louvre in Paris, which has been attacked with acid, a brick, and a mug.

The iconic Azure Window on the Maltese island of Gozo collapsed into the sea today.

The breath-taking structure was believed to be thousands of years old, but rough seas have finally taken their toll and the limestone arch crumbled into the Inland Sea.

One of the most popular destinations on the Maltese archipelago, the turquoise waters surrounding the limestone sculpture have been a popular site for swimming, scuba diving and boating.

In 2012 a large piece of rock dislocated from the imposing arch, an alteration that has significantly led to its devastating demise.

Joseph Muscat tweeted: “I have just been informed that the beautiful Tieqa tad-Dwejra in #Gozo has collapsed. Updates soon.

“Reports commissioned over the years indicated that this landmark would be hard hit by unavoidable natural corrosion. That sad day arrived.”

Hundreds of people took to the Prime Minister’s Twitter account to acknowledge the site. 

The Azure Window’s memory has been preserved in a number of films, including Clash of the Titans and The Count of Monte Cristo. 

The famous landmark was also the backdrop to the wedding between Daenerys and Drogo in the first episode of the television series Game of Thrones.

A 2013 study said that the structure was not in imminent danger of collapsing despite inevitable erosion, the Times of Malta reported.

Signs had recently been introduced instructing people to stop walking across the landmark, with the threat of a fine – but these warnings were frequently ignored.

“There was a big raging sea beneath the window,” Roger Chessell, from the village of Xaghra, told the Times of Malta. 

“Suddenly, the arch collapsed into the sea.”

Malta was hit by gale force winds on Tuesday, so strong that the ferry services from Malta to Gozo were suspended.

There is a second, less well-known arch nearby at Wied il-Mielah, but for many this is little consolation.

Many expressed their sadness on social media, with Jonnie Atha writing on Twitter: “Gutted that the Azure Window on Gozo in Malta has collapsed in a storm. So glad to have seen it in September ’16.”

“Went to Dwejra this morning and my heart broke a little bit. Goodbye Azure Window,” tweeted Stephanie Murphy.
