President Joe Biden's improved political fortunes appear to be drowning out talk of an intraparty primary challenge in 2024, according to The Washington Post.
In recent months, Biden has signed into law the Inflation Reduction Act, a $ 52 billion chips-funding bill, and bipartisan gun control legislation, breaking part of the filibuster logjam that in recent years has become increasingly common in the Senate.
Fuel prices, which surged to over $ 5 a gallon earlier this summer, are averaging around $ 3.79 nationally as of September 4, per AAA.
And a recent Wall Street Journal poll showed Biden's approval rating at 45%, a welcome sign for the White House, as the president's numbers had lagged in the high 30s and low 40s for nearly a year.
But the diminished chatter surrounding a 2024 primary challenge — at least for now — allows the White House to focus on the midterms as the president reportedly plans to launch his reelection bid after the contests.
Former President Donald Trump, who has teased a run since he left the White House, is also planning to make his 2024 plans known in the coming months. And with Trump reportedly playing a critical role in campaigning for Republicans this fall, he will continue to provide a stark contrast to the Biden White House.
Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna of California said months ago that the party needed to stick together and stop dividing itself over the minutiae of congressional legislation and instead sell what Biden has signed into law.
Some Democrats, frustrated by what they saw as inaction regarding the president's agenda, floated new potential standard bearers, which included Govs. Gavin Newsom of California and J.B. Pritzker of Illinois, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts — in addition to Vice President Kamala Harris.
But Khanna, a progressive who enjoys a strong relationship with the Biden White House, had long dismissed such talk.
"When I was out there saying I support the president's reelection six months ago, I was getting criticized, and now many other people are saying that. They're recognizing we need to stop the internal firing squad and start bragging about what we've done," he told The Post. "Most people understand the stakes of 2024 and understand that weakening Joe Biden is just strengthening Donald Trump."
"This is not the time for political opportunism of trying to do clever ploys and floating your name. This is the time for us to rally around the president's reelection," he added.
While there have been reports of some lingering concerns about Biden's age, as he will turn 82 years old shortly after Election Day 2024, he remains committed to running for reelection.

Monday’s episode of The Good Doctor not only addressed racial profiling in modern medicine, but forced one of the residents to take a good, hard look in the mirror and confront her own preconceived notions.
After misdiagnosing a patient, Claire made a disconcerting discovery about certain practices at the hospital. When it comes to pain management, data showed that St. Bonaventure has been under-treating African American and Latinx patients by a considerable margin, and they’ll need to do better. The numbers were crunched after Claire used pattern-processing techniques taught in medical school to treat Zara Norton, a 34-year-old Black female who was rushed to the ER following a cardiac event. Based on her preconceived notions about this “loud and messy” patient, Claire administered an ACE inhibitor to bring down Zara’s blood pressure. Because the result supported Claire’s hypothesis that this was a standard case of hypertension commonly diagnosed among Black women, she nearly missed a diagnosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, where the heart muscle becomes abnormally thick.
When Zara learned that Claire administered the ACE inhibitor based only on assumption, she asked that Dr. Browne be removed from her case. She even requested to be transferred to another hospital for her corrective procedure, but Dr. Glassman convinced her that she’d receive the best possible treatment if she stayed put. During the open-heart surgery, Andrews, Asher and Enrique faced an unforeseen complication. From the observation deck, Claire verbally intervened and saved Zara’s life.
After the surgery, Claire confronted Zara and admitted she was at fault. When Zara arrived at the ER, Claire had made assumptions based on race, not realizing that those assumptions were based on her own experience with racial profiling.
“When I got to med school, people took one look at me and thought they knew who I was: ‘Black girl on financial aid,’” Claire said. “‘She must not be that smart. She must’ve gotten a lot of breaks, will probably need a lot more…’ I worked so hard to prove them wrong, that I wasn’t who they thought I was, that I deserved to be there, that I fit in… When you came into the ER, loud and messy, I saw everything I have tried hard not to be. I think it made me angry, and I’m ashamed of that. And I’m really sorry.”
In response, Zara told Claire that she “used to be that way,” but she got “tired of working that hard to make white people comfortable.” That’s when it clicked for Dr. Browne. And when she discussed the matter further with Enrique, the two bonded over how exhausting it had been to prove themselves and get where they are now.
Elsewhere this week, Lim was challenged by the unique circumstances surrounding a pregnant patient with an aggressive pituitary tumor. The patient was Rio Gutierrez, a trans man whose recent lapse in testosterone injections made it possible for him and his fiancé Eli to conceive a child. His decision to carry the child to term and undergo an alternative procedure nearly cost him his vision, but the chief of surgery saved the day. Rio would make a full recovery.
As for Lim: After weeks of vehemently denying that she needed help to combat her post-traumatic stress disorder, one final episode in the OR doubled as her come-to moment. Once Rio was out of surgery, Lim returned to her office and fetched a prescription from her desk. She later told Andrews and Claire was taking Sertraline (aka Zoloft) to treat her condition.
Meanwhile, after teasing a potential obstacle for Shaun and Lea in the form of second-year radiology resident Dr. Cintia D’Souza, Monday’s episode revealed the big kiss seen in the coming attractions was part of a dream sequence. Despite Park and Jordan advising him otherwise, Shaun told Lea about his work crush. Lea wasn’t fazed, but she needed to help Shaun understand that his sexy dream did not signal a problem in their relationship. In order to make Dr. D’Souza less desirable to her boyfriend, Lea exposed Shaun to the resident’s “irresponsible salad bar practices” — hence the episode’s title. Relationship crisis averted!

The following story contains spoilers from The Undoing‘s entire six-episode run — proceed at your own peril
Everyone has it out for Sylvia! Even though The Undoing‘s ‘Who Killed Elena’ murder mystery has been solved (the husband did it!), fans still seem hell-bent on tying Lily Rabe‘s Upper East Side muckraker to the crime, even if tangentially. At the very least she was sleeping with her BFF’s hubby, they postulate. For her part, Rabe completely understands why viewers have taken a sculpting hammer to her alter ego’s reputation. The American Horror Story vet also shared with TVLine the one Sylvia-relayed conspiracy theory she simply can’t get on board with, and reveals what it was like to work so closely with Nicole Kidman’s coats.
TVLINE | We ran a poll in the days leading up to the finale asking readers who they think killed Elena. Sylvia won handily. And even though we now know Jonathan did it, I still see comments from people who believe she was somehow involved. Why do you think there has been, and continues to be, this cloud of suspicion over her?
Listen, early on Sylvia kept some information from Grace [about how she covertly represented Jonathan in his firing from the hospital]. For a lot of people, that kind of betrayal is enough for people to question that friendship and question Sylvia’s integrity. And I understand why. The rules of what we share and what we omit out of love are so subjective and complicated. I don’t think I could’ve kept that [secret] from my closest friends. And I think I would’ve felt incredibly betrayed if someone had done it to me. But I also understand why she made that choice at the time. She didn’t think it would help Grace. And she had a professional obligation; it was privileged information. But that put her on [fans’ murder] watch list.
TVLINE | Viewers had a field day reading into the nod Sylvia gave Jonathan in the courtroom when he was being arraigned in Episode 3. What did the nod mean to you?
“I’m watching you. You’re not safe with me. I don’t trust you. And I’m here with clearer eyes.” And I think there’s also a moment of, “Please let this not be the truth. You are someone that I loved” — and I do not mean that romantically. [Laughs]
TVLINE | Fans have floated some interesting conspiracy theories about Sylvia’s possible involvement in the murder, beyond the obvious one about her having an affair with Jonathan. There was one about her being in cahoots with Franklin, another about her being Jonathan’s little sister who never actually died…
That one is new to me. I knew about the affair with Jonathan. I also knew that there was a theory that Franklin and I were in cahoots — which I liked. Sylvia has known Franklin since she was born; their families summered together. And I think they had a bond and a likeness of spirit. We sort of imagined that during those summers when everyone went to bed they were probably the last two that stayed out late finishing the second bottle of wine. I love all of the theories. I love the way people are watching the show. [Pauses] Wait… that I’m Jonathan’s sister?!
TVLINE | Yes. Someone suggested that Sylvia was the younger sister he claimed died in the car accident, and she’s been keeping her real identity a secret from Grace all these years.
Hmm… I don’t know about that one. The rest of them I can [get on board with]. That one is really a stretch though. [Laughs]
TVLINE | One thing that that seemed off to me about Sylvia was how much pleasure she seemed to derive from all the drama swirling around Grace and the community.
That’s how she moves through this world. And I don’t mean this in a sort of manipulative way, but that’s how she collects information. It does light her up. She wants to be the first to know the truth — and she is the first to know in a lot of ways. She is the person a lot of people come to with information. And she doesn’t necessarily give it away, but she has to be sparkly about it otherwise people wouldn’t keep her in that position. It gives her power. I don’t think there’s any glee in the fact that Elena was killed, but [she revels] in the upset it brings to the community. Like when Elena was breastfeeding her daughter at the [auction] meeting [in the premiere] — that was something that just doesn’t happen. And I think Sylvia loves that. She loves when things are pushed off balance. She thrives on it. And sometimes she nudges it. She’s a pot-stirrer. But that doesn’t mean that she’s sleeping with her best friend’s husband. Or killing anyone. [Laughs]
TVLINE | A lot has been made of Grace’s coats. You had the benefit of seeing many of them up close. Were they as resplendent in person as they appeared to be on TV?
Yes. And more. They were bananas. They really were like characters. They felt like fairytale coats. In the sea of New York and in the chaos of what is happening, there are these coats. They was so brilliant, particularly the [green and eggplant ones]. And they were a little off-kilter. They weren’t like the perfect, gorgeous Max Mara Upper East Side coat that I was wearing. They were a little more off-center, which was so delicious and perfect.
TVLINE | What was your working relationship with Nicole like?
I love her. She is such an incredible woman, generous friend and scene partner. What a wonderful thing it was to fall in love with her, as Sylvia. And I don’t mean romantically! People are going to come up with a whole new theory. [Laughs] I mean in the way we fall in love with friends. And the way you fall in love over and over again in our friendships and relationships. And that’s what happens here. It really could’ve gone in a different direction with [Grace and Sylvia]. But they get through it. And by the end they are linking arms. But there’s no one like Nicole. She is amazing.

Stacking it during her Dancing on Ice performance, Gemma was left in tears.
Performing a routine to Céline Dion’s It’s All Coming Back To Me Now, Gemma seemed to be concentrating hard on her performance.
However, as the song came to an end, Gemma and her professional skating partner Matt Evers skated solo momentarily.
As Gemma rushed forward, she lifted her right leg back and fell forward at speed.
Hidden under the dry ice, Gemma was pulled out of the haze by Matt after she struggled to get up.
The contestant hugged her partner once back on her feet and began to break down.
She cried to Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield: “Do you know what, in rehearsals it was so great!”
Her professional partner Matt said: “Unfortunately at the end there was that little trip but it was at the end and you got up.”
Ashely Banjo remarked: “I’m so gutted for you Gemma!”
Jayne Torvill noted: “It’s so disappointing!”
Christopher Dean said: “Unfortunate about the trip.”
Falling flat on her face, the presenters feared Gemma may have given herself an injury, with Phillip commending her on the routine.
One viewer tweeted a video clip of Gemma’s fall, captioned: “Comedy moment of 2019 goes too…… Gemma Collins.”
Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan jumped to Gemma’s defence.
He replied: “Actually, the gutsiest thing I’ve seen on any talent show for years.
“Fell flat on her face, probably hurt like hell in every sense, but got up again & received her best score. Bravo @missgemcollins.”
Gemma and Matt scored a total of 16.5 points, their biggest score of the series so far.
However, this still puts the pair in bottom place. Will they be safe tonight?
Later in the show, Gemma was missing from the line-up, with Matt revealing she was in physio.
Dancing on Ice 2019 continues next Sunday on ITV at 6pm.
