Ron Desantis speaking.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis speaks at a press conference on September 7, 2022, in Miami, Florida.

  • Migrants who were flown to Martha's Vineyard filed a lawsuit against Gov. Ron DeSantis on Tuesday.
  • Migrants were made to believe that they would receive refugee benefits upon arrival, lawsuit says.
  • They received "official-looking materials" including a brochure "manufactured" by Florida officials.

Florida officials and agencies used several tactics to lure migrants on a chartered flight to Martha's Vineyard, including making a fake brochure that purports refugee benefits, according to a class-action lawsuit.

On September 14, 50 migrants, most of whom were from Venezuela, were flown in two chartered planes from Texas to Martha's Vineyard as part of a political stunt by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to criticize border policies under the Biden administration.

Now, a group of those migrants is taking action against DeSantis and other state officials and agencies in a class-action lawsuit filed on Tuesday. Lawyers representing the migrants accused DeSantis and Florida officials of plotting an "illegal scheme" to "defraud vulnerable immigrants to advance a political motive."

Part of that "scheme," according to the lawsuit, was to make "false promises and false representations" of potential employment and housing, among other benefits, upon arriving on Martha's Vineyard.

For example, just before they arrived on the island, migrants were given a "shiny, red folder" filled with "official-looking materials," including a brochure titled "Massachusetts Refugee Benefits."

The brochure contained misleading information on resettlement aid that, in reality, was not available for migrants seeking asylum in Massachusetts, as previously reported by Insider.

The lawsuit goes further by accusing DeSantis and other officials of fabricating the leaflet entirely.

"On information and belief, the brochure was manufactured by Defendants," the lawsuit read, adding that it "echoed the type of false representation" that migrants were given by word-of-mouth, such as assistance with housing, food, and employment in the first 90 days upon arrival in Massachusetts.

Brochure for Migrants
Lawyers for Civil Rights says migrants bound for Martha's Vineyard received this brochure promising cash, job placement and more.

According to the lawsuit, the brochure also took language from an existing state program, the Massachusetts Refugee Resettlement Program, which none of the migrants were eligible for.

"This brochure was not prepared by the Massachusetts Office for Refugees and Immigrants, or any other Massachusetts agency or immigration services organization," the lawsuit stated.

A representative from the state's Office for Refugees and Immigrants did not immediately respond to request for comment.

If you’re an environmentally aware meat-eater, you probably carry at least a little guilt to the dinner table. The meat on our plates comes at a significant environmental cost through deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, and air and water pollution—an uncomfortable reality, given the world’s urgent need to deal with climate change.

That’s a big reason there’s such a buzz today around a newcomer to supermarket shelves and burger-joint menus: products that look like real meat but are made entirely without animal ingredients. Unlike the bean- or grain-based veggie burgers of past decades, these “plant-based meats,” the best known of which are Impossible Burger and  Beyond Meat, are marketed heavily toward traditional meat-eaters. They claim to replicate the taste and texture of real ground meat at a fraction of the environmental cost.

If these newfangled meat alternatives can fill a large part of our demand for meat—and if they’re as green as they claim, which is not easy to verify independently—they might offer carnivores a way to reduce the environmental impact of their dining choices without giving up their favorite recipes.

Dancing on Ice viewers distracted by ‘off putting’ fake audience: ‘Can barely watch!’ https://briefnews.eu/dancing-on-ice-viewers-distracted-by-off-putting-fake-audience-can-barely-watch/ https://briefnews.eu/dancing-on-ice-viewers-distracted-by-off-putting-fake-audience-can-barely-watch/#respond Mon, 01 Mar 2021 05:08:59 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/dancing-on-ice-viewers-distracted-by-off-putting-fake-audience-can-barely-watch/

Dancing on Ice bosses have had to make several changes this year as usual proceedings have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The number of contestants taking part has also drastically fallen following multiple injuries over the last few weeks. To still bring energy to the ITV programme, sound effects of people clapping and cheering on the remaining stars have been introduced in this series. However, those watching at home weren’t best pleased with the changes.

Taking to Twitter, one wrote: “That clapping is really off-putting and I’m not even skating! No real audience would clap the whole way through #DancingOnIce.”

Another posted: “Wow the fake audience clapping on #DancingOnIceis really jarring tonight, could barely hear the music even @dancingonice.”

Whilst a third commented: “I absolutely hate this fake studio noise I can barely hear the music that there skating to #DancingOnIce.”

“Can we have the incessant seal-like clapping in the back and music more in the foreground please Mr #DancingOnIce sound person,” a fourth shared.

A fifth opined: “Calm the crowd noise down #DancingOnIce,” with a sixth stating: “Turn down the audience ‘clapping’ #DancingOnIce.”

Sunday night’s show was the first episode to air since bosses decide to put the programme on a brief hiatus last weekend.

Instead of a live instalment of the competition, a rundown of some of the biggest moments to air from the show was broadcast.

Therefore, the remaining five contestants wanted to do their best to prove they are worthy to be crowned champion.

The celebrities still taking part at the beginning of the show included Colin Jackson, 54, and Rebekah Vardy, 39.

Sonny Jay, 27, Lady Leshurr, 32, and Faye Brookes, 33, made up the rest of the line-up as five celebrities have pulled out following injuries sustained in training or from testing positive from coronavirus.

Faye also performed for the first time with her new partner Matt Evers, 44, after Hamish Gaman, 37, had to withdraw after injuring himself.

Despite this change, the former Coronation Street actress is still the favourite to win the competition.

According to the latest odds from Coral bookmakers, the soap star stands at 1/2 to be crowned victor in a few weeks time.

Coral spokesperson Harry Aitkenhead said: “Five celebrities remain to battle it out on the ice to be crowned Dancing on Ice 2021’s champion and we make Faye the hot favourite to go all the way.”

They also believe Rebekah was the favourite to leave the show as her chances of leaving were 5/4 just 24 hours before the latest live episode.

“The betting spells bad news for Rebekah, who is our favourite to be next to go,” Aitkenhead explained, before stating: “She will have to upset the odds if she is to finish any better than 5th place.”

Not far behind Faye in contention for the title of the victor is Capital FM presenter, Sonny, at 3/1, with Colin in third place at 12/1.

Earlier this week, it was announced that because of all the withdrawals, the final would be pushed forward by one week.

An ITV spokesperson said: “The competitions final will now take place on Sunday 14th March.

“Our production team and cast have delivered a fantastic show during incredibly challenging times.

“Continuing to make the best TV for our viewers is our top priority and we look forward to the rest of the series.”

Dancing on Ice continues Sundays at 6:15pm on ITV.

Power season 6: Did Ghost fake his own death? https://briefnews.eu/power-season-6-did-ghost-fake-his-own-death/ https://briefnews.eu/power-season-6-did-ghost-fake-his-own-death/#respond Wed, 11 Dec 2019 06:43:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/power-season-6-did-ghost-fake-his-own-death/

On Reddit, user WeeSean6 said: Okay so crazy theory but, the finale episode was so jumbled imo [in my opinion] and it didn’t seem to link up,

“Like Ghost jumping from different places/conversations so quickly etc.

“So what if ‘Ghost’ getting shot was just that. The ‘Ghost’/hood persona dying and only James living on?”

“The finale seemed like all the perfect ways to say goodbye to his old life and get rid of his past – divorcing Tasha (Naturi Naughton), one last shootout with Tommy, seeing Raina (Donshea Hopkins)/Kanan (50 Cent), saying goodbye to Angela…”

Fake or Fortune: ‘That’s harsh’ Fiona Bruce disagrees with Philip in awkward stand-off https://briefnews.eu/fake-or-fortune-thats-harsh-fiona-bruce-disagrees-with-philip-in-awkward-stand-off/ https://briefnews.eu/fake-or-fortune-thats-harsh-fiona-bruce-disagrees-with-philip-in-awkward-stand-off/#respond Fri, 02 Aug 2019 03:12:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fake-or-fortune-thats-harsh-fiona-bruce-disagrees-with-philip-in-awkward-stand-off/

Tonight’s instalment of the art programme saw Antiques Roadshow presenter Fiona Bruce diving deep into another mystery around an unusual and impressive painting on the BBC.

The sleuthing continued throughout as the presenters continued to get closer and closer to the truth around who actually painted the portrait.

The group speculated that due to the brush strokes, style and technique the artist was actually Thomas Lawrence.

However the painting was labelled under later painter Maria Cosway, prompting much confusion.

The painting belongs to Hugh and Mirabel Cecil, whom Philip Mould was visiting one day when he spotted the majestic painting hanging in their home.

Immediately commenting on the exceptional work by Lawrence, he was quickly told it had been passed down through the family and was actually painted by Conway.

In one scene Fiona, Philip and Miracle all visited Chatsworth House to examine another Conway painting of Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire.

Miracle was convinced there were great similarities between her work and her own painting, but Philip was determined to prove otherwise.

“That’s amazing,” Fiona declared at the breath-taking sight, as Philip noted Cosway had depicted the Duchess as a Greek Goddess.

“It’s so dramatic, it’s like she’s hurtling out of the heavens towards us,” Fiona then said, continuing to experience the piece.

“Actually, which to be fair is probably what she’s literally doing because this is Diana the Huntress, she had a soft spot Maria Conway, for the dressing up box,” Philip went on, and Fiona joked: “I mean not bad, if you wanted to be preserved Mirabel as a goddess hurtling out of the sky, is pretty good. I love it, I have to say.”

But Philip was keen to put a halt to the niceties, and he got down to business.

“Unfortunately this portrait is damaged,” he said. “The paint is badly cracked, resulting in the leathery finish. But can we see through this to compare it to Peniston Lamb?

“The all important technique is radically different to yours,” he offered to Mirabel. “I mean look at the way the drapery is done, particularly top right, you’ve got that flowing piece of robe, half-hair, half-rags, half-something.”

Balking at her co-host’s biting comments, Fiona hit back immediately.

“That’s a bit harsh,” she cried. “It’s not that bad. I mean it’s just a sort of gauzy material isn’t it?” the presenter then attempted to correct.

“Well it is, but this worries me in a way that yours [Mirabel] doesn’t,” Philip countered, not letting go. “The way that that neck-tie in that Serpentine way goes round Peniston’s neck…”

Mirabel continued to fight for her “family” artwork, feeling particularly protective of its perceived history as a Lawrence piece.

“But in a way you’re comparing chalk with cheese because one is an actual portrait of a person the other is a goddess literally hurtling out of space,” she said. “Well it’s very glamorous and Peniston is very glamorous. The colour of the cheeks, the sparkle in the eye, the half-open mouth. Very lively gaze. Background of the Peniston is so lowering with the storm clouds and this is a sort of comparable palette.”

“It’s a very dramatic sky that’s for sure,” Fiona giggled, and Philip realised the owner still needed more “convincing”.

Yet as the episode came to a close and the presenters had spent hours poring over historical documents, the received proof the painting was done by Lawrence, and would therefore be worth a lot more money in auction.

Fake of Fortune continues Thursdays at 9pm on BBC One.

Facebook reportedly took three years to tackle fake news in one country https://briefnews.eu/facebook-reportedly-took-three-years-to-tackle-fake-news-in-one-country/ https://briefnews.eu/facebook-reportedly-took-three-years-to-tackle-fake-news-in-one-country/#respond Sun, 03 Mar 2019 07:39:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/facebook-reportedly-took-three-years-to-tackle-fake-news-in-one-country/

Facebook is quick to tout its efforts to thwart misinformation campaigns in major European countries and the US, but its approach in other countries might not be quite so enthusiastic. Developers in Moldova told BuzzFeed News that they’d been asking Facebook to address fake news and misinformation in the country for three years before it finally removed the offenders. The Moldovans said they used a browser add-on (Trolless) to generate a database of fake accounts and had been using the official reporting tool to draw attention to them since 2016, but didn’t have any luck until they made direct contact with a Facebook employee in January 2019.

The social network said it had been investigating the misinformation in question (including 168 fake accounts, 28 pages and eight Instagram accounts) since early January, but added that the Trolless developers influenced its decision to remove offenders in February.

The incident isn’t unique: the creator of the French site Hoaxbuster also reported having similar problems getting in touch. The findings suggest that the reporting tool isn’t as effective as it’s supposed to be, and that Facebook appears to prioritize input from its official fact-checking allies over that of independents. That in turn, raises the chances that fake accounts might go unnoticed at crucial moments. In Moldova, for instance, Russian influence campaigns have been present for a long time — there’s a real risk that a bogus Facebook post might succeed where conventional propaganda might fail.

iOS 12.2 beta comes with new Animoji and AT&T’s fake 5G logo https://briefnews.eu/ios-12-2-beta-comes-with-new-animoji-and-atts-fake-5g-logo/ https://briefnews.eu/ios-12-2-beta-comes-with-new-animoji-and-atts-fake-5g-logo/#respond Tue, 05 Feb 2019 08:05:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ios-12-2-beta-comes-with-new-animoji-and-atts-fake-5g-logo/

Apple has rolled out a new beta version of iOS 12.2, and testers on AT&T have noticed a curious change with their devices. Some users have reported that “5G E” — the carrier’s controversial fake 5G icon — has replaced the LTE logo when their mobile data is switched on. 5G E stands for “5G Evolution,” which is still LTE, though modified to provide faster-than-usual speeds. AT&T faced a lot of flak from fellow carriers when the icon debuted on Android devices in late 2018, but the company stood by its decision to use the label for areas with enhanced coverage.

In addition, iOS 12.2 beta comes with four new Animoji characters for iDevices with FaceID: a giraffe, a shark, an owl and a warthog. The new characters can mimic the movements of your face like other Animoji can. And according to 9to5mac, they come with special animations, such as the shark baring its teeth if you smile.
