Warning: This interview contains mild spoilers from the premiere of Netflix’s Grand Army.

Netflix’s newest teen addiction is no Riverdale — and that’s a very good thing.

Loosely based on a 2013 play by series creator Katie Cappiello, Grand Army follows five diverse students at a public high school in Brooklyn. The series, which dropped its first nine episodes on Friday, offers an unflinching look at the experiences of Gen Zers in America, including some challenges that more commonly face teens of color.

“Katie is really big on making it as authentic as possible,” Maliq Johnson, who plays sophomore musician Jayson Jackson, tells TVLine. “If there was a scenario where we felt like things would have gone differently for us in our own lives, she was very open to letting us tell her that. And if there was a way she could do it, she would put it in the show.”

Compared to some of his fellow classmates — who immediately find themselves tackling issues surrounding sexual identity, poverty and slut-shaming — Jay’s life feels comfortably undramatic from the outset. “He’s a goofball and he can be mischievous, but he doesn’t do anything with bad intentions,” Johnson says. “He’s a good kid.”

Unfortunately, like so many young Black men, Jay’s spirit is tested by a series of tragic circumstances. “Jay isn’t really aware of his responsibilities, and how different it is for him as a Black man in America… until something happens on the show that forces him to pay attention to his Blackness,” he teases.

Johnson continues, “I was raised with my parents telling me, ‘You’re a Black man. It’s different for you. If you get into a certain encounter, you have to think about how it’s going to be different for you, how the consequences are going to be more extreme. If something happens to you, it’s going to be hard to get a second chance.”

And this is just one example of the all-too-real problems tackled in Grand Army, whose first episode kicks off with a school-wide lockdown prompted by an incident of domestic terrorism nearby.

Ahead of the ABC medical drama’s likely delayed 17th season, Vernoff tells TVLine that when it comes to Meredith’s latest romantic predicament — does Ellen Pompeo‘s MD get back with sorta ex-love DeLuca or pursue a relationship with new doc on the block Cormac ‘McWidow’ Hayes — the EP has backed herself into the best kind of corner.

“I’m at the point with that story where I don’t know who I am rooting for,” Vernoff confesses to TVLine. “I don’t know if I think that DeLuca is rising to a level of dark and twisty and life experience that makes him somehow a [suitably] mature partner for Meredith. Or if all that Hayes has been through in his life already makes him her equal. I am delighted to have such a conundrum.”

Vernoff credits DeLuca and Hayes’ respective portrayers, Giacomo Gianniotti and Richard Flood, for bringing so much complexity to the love triangle. “I thought that both Giacomo and Richard rose so beautifully to the occasion of the storytelling,” she enthuses. “You write a script and you think it’s one thing and then you see it shot and put it together and it becomes something entirely different… I honestly don’t know how it will end.”

Grey’s Anatomy’s 16th season came to a premature conclusion earlier this month as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. As we previously reported, the original finale was slated to revolve around a cataclysmic event that would have likely claimed the life of a major character. Grey’s fans may be able to glean clues about the ill-fated finale in this season’s final episodes of sister series Station 19.

“Ironically, when fans watch Episode 15 and 16 of Station 19, they will probably have a feeling of some of what we had planned for [the original Grey’s finale],” Vernoff previously told TVLine.

TV’s Coronavirus Crisis: Which Shows Are Facing Shortened Seasons? And Which Series Had Already Wrapped? https://briefnews.eu/tvs-coronavirus-crisis-which-shows-are-facing-shortened-seasons-and-which-series-had-already-wrapped/ https://briefnews.eu/tvs-coronavirus-crisis-which-shows-are-facing-shortened-seasons-and-which-series-had-already-wrapped/#respond Tue, 17 Mar 2020 16:01:59 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/tvs-coronavirus-crisis-which-shows-are-facing-shortened-seasons-and-which-series-had-already-wrapped/

Maybe you’ve noticed. Since late February, TVLine has thrown a lot of information at you about which series will (and won’t) be be affected by the coronavirus pandemic. In fact, maybe you’ve not only noticed this but have found your head spinning a bit as a result.

We wouldn’t blame you in the slightest. What’s more, we’re here to help by doing what we all must in a time of crisis: organize our asses off. In our case, that’s meant compiling an exhaustively comprehensive and up-to-the-minute list of TV shows, and noting how, if at all, their production has been impacted. (And yes, washing our hands afterward!)

For some programs — quite a few of them, actually — the news is good. Modern Family, for instance, had already wrapped work on its 11th and final season before one production after another began shutting down. And having completed taping on Season 3, The Masked Singer had closed up its bonkers wardrobe closet until next time around.

For others programs, the news is… less good. Among the series grappling with interrupted seasons are Supernatural and Empire, both of which are currently airing their own farewell seasons. And while we’re not necessarily in favor of long, drawn-out goodbyes, we certainly don’t want to see shows we’ve known and loved hurried out the door, either!

To find out whether — and, if so, to what degree — the series on your must-watch list are being affected by coronavirus shutdowns, scroll through the gallery above (or click here for direct access).

Coronation Street spoilers: Gary Windass facing cruel DEATH as star drops huge bombshell? https://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-spoilers-gary-windass-facing-cruel-death-as-star-drops-huge-bombshell/ https://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-spoilers-gary-windass-facing-cruel-death-as-star-drops-huge-bombshell/#respond Fri, 12 Apr 2019 06:02:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-spoilers-gary-windass-facing-cruel-death-as-star-drops-huge-bombshell/

Gary Windass (played by Mikey North) is at the mercy of loan shark Rick Neelan (Greg Wood) and has been doing shady jobs for the baddy on the side.

The father-of-one borrowed money from him and is now working off his debt, all the while living a double life, as he keeps it a secret from his family and girlfriend Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien).

But his arrangement with the crooked businessman could leave him on death’s door in a shocking Coronation Street murder plot.

Mikey North, who plays the builder, admitted he fears his character will be killed off the long-running ITV soap in an unexpected twist.

In an interview with The Sun, he said: “I’ve always said, the number of Platt’s boyfriends and husbands that have died, it’s probably got to be me next, but I’ve had a good run!”

He went on to suggest Rick would be the one to take him out and compared him to notorious serial killer, Pat Phelan (Connor McIntyre).

“I quite like the character Rick, the way he’s written, it’s almost like the likeable scary bad guy,” he added.

“He’s got some pretty decent one-liners, whereas Pat was pretty much bad through and through, so I think there’s a bit more to like about Rick, but I wouldn’t mess with him.”

Also, the 32-year-old let slip Sarah would meet Rick under “strange” circumstances, with him teasing: “Rick and Sarah will meet eventually, in quite strange circumstances and that’s how she’s going to find out about all this.

“I don’t think anyone can protect anyone from Ricky, he’s pretty ruthless.”

In the coming weeks Carla’s mental health will suffer, perhaps as a direct result of the factory roof collapse.

Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod said the businesswoman will alienate herself following the incident.

Speaking to Digital Spy, he revealed: “What happens impacts massively on Carla’s mental health.”

The former Emmerdale producer added: “We’re doing something a little bit stylised, like with the Ashley story I did at Emmerdale, but not quite as extreme as Corrie’s take on that.”

Coronation Street continues tonight on ITV at 7.30pm and 8.30pm.

This is why you’re afraid: Notes on facing our fears during adventures https://briefnews.eu/this-is-why-youre-afraid-notes-on-facing-our-fears-during-adventures/ https://briefnews.eu/this-is-why-youre-afraid-notes-on-facing-our-fears-during-adventures/#respond Sat, 02 Feb 2019 03:20:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/this-is-why-youre-afraid-notes-on-facing-our-fears-during-adventures/

According to Meyers, if you have true acrophobia, chances are you won’t even be able to climb a ladder or board a commercial airliner. “The rest of us, myself included, have a fear of falling,” he explains. “When we peer over the edge of a building, our brain can easily measure the height and we feel that familiar electric pang in our stomach, our fingers and toes curling involuntarily. As if millions of years of evolution is telling us to tighten our grip, even on feet that have long since lost this ability.”

RELATED: Scared of flying? Here’s why you shouldn’t be

Meyers goes on to clarify that when we take flight, this fear momentarily falls away because just a couple hundred feet off the ground, our brain loses its ability to measure elevation. There is no connecting structure or yardstick for our brains to measure with. We become metaphorically buoyant and our feet have nothing to anchor themselves to. We give up control.

This made sense. I have friends who are afraid of heights yet have gone riding in hot air balloons or skydiving. Moments after lift-off, that paralyzing fear they faced was instantly replaced with some form of euphoric resignation—that nature wasn’t out to get them, but rather, awe them. “Just because we learn to punch through one form of fear, doesn’t mean we punch through them all,” adds Meyers. “I am nervous every time I fly. I would be worried if I wasn’t.”

So, is loss of control another reason we’re afraid?

Canadian NHL teams facing big challenges after all-star break https://briefnews.eu/canadian-nhl-teams-facing-big-challenges-after-all-star-break/ https://briefnews.eu/canadian-nhl-teams-facing-big-challenges-after-all-star-break/#respond Thu, 31 Jan 2019 04:44:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/canadian-nhl-teams-facing-big-challenges-after-all-star-break/ Now that the all-star break has come and gone, the NHL's regular season is down to its final 10 weeks.

For most of the Canadian-based teams, it's crunch time. The Calgary Flames, Winnipeg Jets and Toronto Maple Leafs are among the league's best, while the Montreal Canadiens and Vancouver Canucks have enjoyed surprisingly sound seasons.

Meanwhile, the Edmonton Oilers and Ottawa Senators have performed to expectations, which isn't a good thing.

Here's a closer look at each Canadian team entering the final two-plus months of the regular season and the 26 days before the Feb. 25 trade deadline:

Calgary Flames

Situation: 1st in the West and 2nd overall
Remaining Games: 31 (15 home, 16 away)
Games left against current playoff teams: 14 — @WSH, SJ, @TB, @PIT, NYI, @NYI, MIN, TOR, @VGK, VGK, @WPG, CLB, DAL, @SJ

The skinny: The Flames were supposed to be better under new coach Bill Peters, and they keep improving as season progresses. Peters' side has gone on a remarkable 11-1-2 run since Christmas and sit second in goals per game at 3.73. Only Tampa Bay has been better at 4.00 goals a game. Captain Mark Giordano has enjoyed a Norris Trophy-calibre season. He's second in defencemen scoring with 11 goals and 52 points, just three points behind leader Brent Burns of San Jose. Flames goaltending duo of David Rittich (19 wins) and Mike Smith (14 wins) should be fresh, having played 27 and 24 starts, respectively. GM Brad Treliving shouldn't tinker much with a winning lineup, other than adding a depth player up front.

Edmonton Oilers

Situation: Tied for 12th in the West, 3 points out of a playoff spot
Remaining Games: 32 (15 home, 17 away)
Games left against current playoff teams: 17 — @MTL, @MIN, SJ, @PIT, @NYI, NYI, @NSH, @TOR, @CLB, TOR, @VGK, CLB, DAL, @VGK, @COL, SJ, @CGY

The skinny: Three points is not much to make up, but the Oilers stumbled with a 5-12-0 slump before the break. The poor play resulted in the firing of GM Peter Chirarelli a week ago. This slide came after it appeared Edmonton was finding its way under new coach Ken Hitchcock with seven wins in eight games. The story the rest of the way will be CEO Bob Nicholson's search for a new GM. This franchise can't do much before the trade deadline because of salary cap woes and difficult contracts to shed. In the meantime, Hitchcock will search for ways the Oilers can better defend (24th in goals against) and improve their dismal penalty-killing unit (27th). The best player in the game, captain Connor McDavid, can only do so much to carry this struggling club.

WATCH | Connor McDavid wins fastest skater competition:

Ottawa Senators

Situation: Last overall
Remaining Games: 32 (15 home, 17 away)
Games left against current playoff teams: 16 — @PIT, @TOR, WPG, @WPG, CLB, CGY, @WSH, @TB, @NYI, NYI, @BOS, TOR, @CGY, TOR, TB, CLB

The skinny: The Senators will be closely followed the rest of the way. Colorado hopes Ottawa continues its basement-dwelling because the Avalanche has the Senators' first-round selection in the 2019 draft from the Matt Duchene trade 15 months ago. That could turn into a lottery win in the sweepstakes for Jack Hughes, the consensus first-overall selection in June. Will the Senators be able to sign Duchene and captain Mark Stone before the trade deadline? Both are set to become unrestricted free agents in the summer and don't have no-trade clauses. Both Stone (22 goals, 50 points) and Duchene (20 goals, 47 points) will be sought after trade targets. Off the ice there is the legal battle between owner Eugene Melnyk and his former business partner over a downtown arena venture.

Montreal Canadiens

Situation: Third in Atlantic Division, sandwiched one point behind Toronto and one point ahead of Boston. The Habs, however, have played two more games than the Maple Leafs and one more than the Bruins.
Remaining Games: 31 (15 home, 16 road)
Games left against current playoff teams: 15 — WPG, TOR, @NSH, @TB, CLB, @TOR, PIT, @SJ, @NYI, NYI, @CLB, @WPG, TB, @WSH, TOR

The skinny: Through a strong coaching staff, led by Claude Julien, and a balanced speed-demon, scoring attack that has seven players with 10 or more goals, the Canadiens have pushed themselves into the playoff mix. Like the Flames, the Habs have been playing their best in the last five weeks thanks to an 11-5-0 stretch. It no coincidence the return of captain Shea Weber has helped the Canadiens' cause. Montreal goalie Carey Price also has found his form. He has won his last four starts, stopping 134 of 138 shots. Price won't play against New Jersey on Saturday in order to serve his one-game suspension for skipping the all-star game. If the playoffs were to begin today the Habs would meet the Maple Leafs for the first time since 1979.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Situation: 7th overall, 2nd in Atlantic Division
Remaining Games: 33 (16 home, 17, away)
Games left against current playoff teams: 13 — PIT, @MTL, @COL, @VGK, WSH, MTL, @NYI, @CGY, TB, @NSH, @NYI, TB, @MTL

The skinny: The addition of Stanley Cup winner Jake Muzzin, 29, bolsters the Maple Leafs blue-line. Moving to Toronto a month before the trade deadline also allows Muzzin more time to become accustomed to his new surroundings. It will be interesting, however, to see Muzzin's immediate impact. The Maple Leafs lost seven of 10 outings before their win at home over Washington before the break. Despite the slump, Toronto (30-17-2) has five more points than last year's 26-18-5 team at this point, but they have a middling 15-12-0 record against playoff-bound teams. Does this skilled group have enough grit to win a playoff series, let alone a deep playoff run like the Jets pulled off last spring? Windows are small in this league now because of the challenges fitting second contracts under the salary cap. So will the Maple Leafs add grit before the trade deadline?

Vancouver Canucks

Situation: Tied with Colorado for the final wildcard playoff spot in the West, but Avalanche have played one less game.
Remaining Games: 31 (16 home, 15 away)
Games left against current playoff teams: 16 — @COL, @WSH, CGY, SJ, @SJ, NYI, @COL, @VGK, TOR, VGK, @DAL, CGY, CLB, DAL, SJ, @NSH

The skinny: Led by super rookie Elias Pettersson's 23 goals and 45 points the youthful Canucks remain in the hunt for the playoffs this late in the season. They are in the bottom half in goals for (19th), goals against (20th), power-play efficiency (22nd) and penalty killing (20th), and have dropped a spirit-crunching 13 of their 20 one-goal games – seven in regulation time and six more in either overtime or a shootout. Vancouver also survived a 13-game stretch between Nov. 10 to Dec. 4 in which it went a dismal 1-10-2. But led by young lions like Pettersson, 20, Brock Boeser 21, Bo Horvat, 23, and Jake Virtanen, 22, the Canucks keep coming on. Unlikely to be that active at the trade deadline because of their youth, the Canucks begin the final 10 weeks with a key road game against the team they're chasing, Colorado, on Saturday and they have a return date in Denver on Feb. 27.

Winnipeg Jets

Situation: 3rd overall, 1st in Central Division
Remaining Games: 32 (15 home, 17 road)
Games left against current playoff teams: 19 — CLB, SJ, @MTL, COL, @COL, MIN, NSH, @CLB, @TB, @WSH, SJ, CGY, @VGK, NSH, DAL, NYI, MTL, @MIN, @COL

The skinny: Kudos to the Jets for following up their impressive run to the West final last spring with another strong regular season. They are on the same pace they set a year ago with 66 points (32-16-2) after 50 games, compared to 66 points (29-13-8) last season. This playoff-ready team has put up some impressive numbers: sixth in goals-for, sixth in goals-against, fourth in power play and 11th in penalty kill. They begin the final 10 weeks of the regular season five points behind the Flames. Is it important to finish atop the West? The Flames have the best home record in the conference at 17-4-5. The Jets are next at 18-6-2. GM Kevin Cheveldayoff has pressure leading up to the trade deadline because he pulled off Paul Stastny deal a year ago. The Jets finish the season with 32 gruelling games in 66 days and have been without defenceman Dustin Byfuglien (lower body) for the past month.

Kevin Spacey Posts Bizarre Video as House of Cards Character While Facing New Sexual Assault Charge — Watch https://briefnews.eu/kevin-spacey-posts-bizarre-video-as-house-of-cards-character-while-facing-new-sexual-assault-charge-watch/ https://briefnews.eu/kevin-spacey-posts-bizarre-video-as-house-of-cards-character-while-facing-new-sexual-assault-charge-watch/#respond Mon, 24 Dec 2018 21:44:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kevin-spacey-posts-bizarre-video-as-house-of-cards-character-while-facing-new-sexual-assault-charge-watch/

Kevin Spacey is speaking out… as Frank Underwood. The actor posted a strange video to YouTube on Monday, in which he addresses viewers as his deceased House of Cards character, who was written out after sexual assault allegations against Spacey came to light. In the clip, titled “Let Me Be Frank,” Spacey alludes to Frank’s death in the sixth and final season of the Netflix drama, as well as the real-life allegations against him. In Oct. 2017, actor Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of sexually assaulting him at a party in New York when Rapp was 14.

“I know what you want. You want me back,” a Christmas apron-sporting Spacey says in the video. “Of course, some believed everything and have just been waiting with bated breath to hear me confess it all. They’re just dying to have me declare that everything said is true and that I got what I deserved. … But you wouldn’t believe the worst without evidence, would you? You wouldn’t rush to judgment without facts, would you?”

“All this presumption made for such an unsatisfying ending, and to think it could have been such a memorable sendoff,” Spacey continues, later adding, “I can promise you this: If I didn’t pay the price for the things we both know I did do, I’m certainly not going to pay the price for the things I didn’t do.”

Spacey goes on to say that “despite all the poppycock, the animosity, the headlines, the impeachment without a trial, despite everything, despite even my own death, I feel surprisingly good, and my confidence grows each day that soon enough you will know the full truth.”

He concludes his monologue by noting, “You never actually saw me die, did you?” He then puts on Frank’s ring. “Conclusions can be so deceiving. Miss me?” he finishes before walking away to the sound of a dramatic music cue.

The video comes on top of news that Spacey will be arraigned on a felony charge of indecent assault and battery on a person 14 or over at Nantucket District Court on Jan. 7, our sister site Variety reports. Spacey was accused by former Boston news anchor Heather Unruh of sexually assaulting her then-18-year-old son at a Nantucket, Mass., bar in July 2016. According to Unruh, the actor provided her son (who told Spacey he was 21) with drinks and then reached down his pants and grabbed the young man’s genitals.

  • Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey sparked outrage with his positive Tweets about his recent trip to Myanmar.
  • Social media platforms — including Facebook and Twitter — may have worsened a humanitarian crisis there.
  • Twitter users are responding criticizing Dorsey’s posts for being “tone-deaf.”

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey recently visited Pyin Oo Lwin, Myanmar, for his birthday, to participate in a 10-day Vipassana silent meditation retreat. Since then, he’s been posting photos and detailed descriptions of his trip on Twitter, encouraging other people to go there if they can.

Now, Dorsey is facing backlash against his supposedly ignorant promotion of Myanmar, where social media platforms — including Twitter and Facebook — allegedly helped fuel a mass genocide, SFGate and other outlets reported.

Tiger Tiara facing daunting task https://briefnews.eu/tiger-tiara-facing-daunting-task/ https://briefnews.eu/tiger-tiara-facing-daunting-task/#respond Sat, 08 Dec 2018 15:26:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tiger-tiara-facing-daunting-task/ The indomitable Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen yard cost Tiger Tara a New Zealand Cup dream a month ago and again seems the biggest danger to the New South Wales star securing further Group 1 success.

Spankem and Cruz Bromac both won TAB Inter Dominion Round 3 heats at Cranbourne on Saturday night — Cruz Bromac is undefeated this series — and they head the betting charts.

Tiger Tara also won his third-round heat and, despite going into ID18 as the top-ranked horse, he’s slipped to the third line of betting at $ 5.

“It’s going to come down to the draw, but I just have to say a few prayers and hope for a good alley,” Tiger Tara’s winning driver Todd McCarthy said.

The Kevin Pizzuto-trained Tiger did the lion’s share of the work in the New Zealand Cup, covering plenty of ground in the run before All Stars gun Thefixer bloused him along the sprint lane.

His connections will be desperate for redemption in the Inter Dominion.

“He’s very tough. The distance is going to play into his hands,” McCarthy said. ”One thing’s for sure, he’s going to do his best for us.”

Rasmussen had loads of praise for four-year-old Spankem.

“He is just loving the trip,” the winning driver said.

“That bit of one-on-one with him … he thinks he’s a big boy now. He’s just loving it.”

Meanwhile, there’s no such thing as a fait accompli in an Inter Dominion series but Tornado Valley is pretty close to it.

The Andy Gath-trained star easily prevailed in his third-round ID18 heat last night with Kate Gath in the sulky. Even Tornado Valley’s bandages coming undone at the top of the home straight couldn’t bring the champ undone.

Ever the professional, the favourite didn’t flinch and won by 6.3m over Save Our Pennys.

“If he draws poorly it will make things a hell of a lot harder, but he is versatile so it’s not the end of the world,” Kate Gath said when asked about Tornado Valley’s Grand Final chances.

Kiwi champ Speeding Spur won the other trotting heat for John and Josh Dickie.
