Both Milan clubs want the Chelsea midfielder and could be poised to land the 31-year-old, who will be free to talk to clubs after December with his contract running out in June, as a free agent.

Inter’s No1 midfield target this summer was Real Madrid’s Luka Modric but they failed in their bid to land the Croatian.

Inter then tried for Fabregas as a second option but Chelsea did not want to sell at the time and the player wanted to stay.

In the end, Luciano Spalletti looked across Italy and signed Radja Nainggolan from AS Roma in a £33m swap deal, as Davide Santon and Nicolo Zaniolo went the other way.

Nainggolan has proved a decent buy so far, scoring in his only game for the Italian giants against Bologna in a 3-0 win.

AC Milan are also thought to be keen on the former Arsenal and Barcelona player and, with the Serie A club having signed France midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko on a season-long loan from Chelsea in the summer and wanting to make the move permanent at the end of this campaign, they are hoping to use that as a bargaining chip for Fabregas.

Milan’s summer activity saw them spend big on Gonzalo Higuain, forking out £16.2m in a loan deal, while their biggest deal of the summer was the £31.5m acquisition of Mattia Caldara.

Caldara, a centre-back, joined from Juventus as Milan failed to land the central midfielder they were after, meaning they could well be tempted to go in for Fabregas in the January transfer window.

Fabregas has only just recovered from a knee injury which has dogged him since the start of the season and his only appearance so far for new Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri came in the pre-season Community Shield Wembley defeat to Manchester City.

The Spaniard is yet to be called into a matchday squad by Sarri since then, with new signing Jorginho anchoring the Chelsea midfield in every game so far.

Even when he returns to full fitness, he is still facing a tough route back into the first-team.

England duo Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley are both competing for a chance to break into the side.

Loftus-Cheek this summer demanded a chance in the Blues’ first-team, having performed well at Crystal Palace last season whilst on loan.

He accepted, however, that he still has to learn the manager’s style.

“I have just got to work hard, try and play my best football, and try and get as much time on the pitch as possible,” He told the official Chelsea website.

“You can only really set specific targets when you know you’re playing every week, so for me it’s just a case of getting my head down, working hard, trying to understand the manager’s tactics and going from there.”

Since returning to England from Spain, Fabregas has won two Premier League titles, under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

The Spaniard played an integral part in both campaigns, appearing 34 times as Chelsea ran away with the league in the 2014/15 season, chipping in with 18 assists.

Following the arrival of N’Golo Kante in the summer of 2016, Blues fans thought they had hit the jackpot when the pair lined up together in midfield.

The pair gelled instantly, and worked well together throughout the 2016-17 season, as Chelsea again claimed the Premier League title, Fabregas chalking up 12 assists, the fourth highest in the league.

Swansea 0 Chelsea 1: Blues’ top four hopes still alive after Cesc Fabregas strike https://briefnews.eu/swansea-0-chelsea-1-blues-top-four-hopes-still-alive-after-cesc-fabregas-strike/ https://briefnews.eu/swansea-0-chelsea-1-blues-top-four-hopes-still-alive-after-cesc-fabregas-strike/#respond Sat, 28 Apr 2018 20:14:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/swansea-0-chelsea-1-blues-top-four-hopes-still-alive-after-cesc-fabregas-strike/

So, still, does a real chance of capturing a Champions League slot against all the odds.

Victory thanks to an early goal from Cesc Fabregas moved them within two points of Spurs in fourth place and also within range of Liverpool above that.

It was a battle all the way against Swansea, whose own hunger for the contest was plain to see as well. Defeat for the home side, though, leaves them just a point above the drop zone.

They face a nerve-wracking finale to the campaign – and their home match in nine days time against Southampton, one point and one place behind in the table, now appears to be the crunch relegation match of this Premier League season.

That will surely be another muck-and-nettles occasion.

Chelsea were certainly thankful here to have the comfort of an early goal in the fourth minute to sustain them through the hurly-burly of a game that was mostly a relentless scrap for midfield possession.

It came when Swansea’s experienced schemer Andy King carelessly gave away the ball on the halfway line. Eden Hazard pounced with ruthless brilliance to put Fabregas clear in the penalty box.

The goal was scored almost in slow motion as Fabregas had oceans of space to curl a left-footed shot into the corner of the net. It was as easy as shelling peas for the Spaniard to claim his 50th strike in the Premier League.

Hazard was in the mood for magic, and that always spells danger for any opponent as he skips past players with a bewitching shimmy as if the ball is tied to his feet.

There were clever passes in abundance, too as Swansea battled to stay in the game.

Ironically, the closest Chelsea came to a second goal before the break was when home defender Alfie Mawson’s clearance looped onto his own bar.

The home side worked with endless spirit and energy – but the moment of quality or inspiration required to unlock the Chelsea defence proved elusive as rain lashed down on the Liberty Stadium.

There wasn’t a single shot to trouble Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois in the first half.

Neither side was being helped by the condition of the pitch. It appeared to have been heavily watered before kick-off and the downpour made it worse, players slipping over and passes sending up spray.

It was little wonder there was barely any action in either penalty area, never mind an actual attempt on goal.

Chelsea’s fans sang ‘Antonio, Antonio’ for a while in praise of their manager – a boss who seems very likely to be departing when the supporters would be happy for him to stay.

It’s not like that at every football club.

Conte patrolled the touchline in a relatively subdued mood that mirrored the nature of the football.

The first shot on target in the second half only came in the 70th minute, a run through the Swansea team by Chelsea wing back Emerson that was comfortably saved.

Moments later a touch from Victor Moses squirmed past the post after some silky brilliance from Hazard.

Swansea, finally, were stirred into serious action, helped by the introduction of the creative quality of Tom Carroll.

Andre Ayew curled one shot just wide in the 77th minute, and Carroll drilled another effort inches past the post with Courtois beaten.

Substitute Wayne Routledge also shot straight at the keeper.

It wasn’t enough, though, for a team scrapping against the drop – and defeat leaves them perilously placed.

Lionel Messi was on target during the Champions League Round of 16 clash against Chelsea last night, earning Barcelona a 1-1 draw with a late strike after Andreas Christensen’s error.

The Argentinian forward had not scored in eight previous matches against the Blues but .

Messi looked delighted with his goal and was all smiles when he caught up with former Barcelona team-mate Cesc Fabregas after the final whistle.

The 30-year-old had no hesitation in swapping shirts with Fabregas, who spent three years at the Nou Camp between 2011 and 2014.

Luis Suarez was also present for the reunion in the tunnel and shared a hug and a joke with Fabregas.

The trio are firm friends off the field and have been seen holidaying with their families together, although the good will may be temporarily set aside during the return leg next month.

Chelsea news: Ruben Loftus-Cheek is BETTER than Cesc Fabregas – Chris Sutton https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-news-ruben-loftus-cheek-is-better-than-cesc-fabregas-chris-sutton/ https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-news-ruben-loftus-cheek-is-better-than-cesc-fabregas-chris-sutton/#respond Tue, 14 Nov 2017 15:19:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chelsea-news-ruben-loftus-cheek-is-better-than-cesc-fabregas-chris-sutton/

That is the view of BBC Sport pundit and former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton.

Loftus-Cheek, who is spending this season on-loan at Crystal Palace, made his England debut in the 0-0 draw with Germany at Wembley last Friday.

The midfielder played the entire 90 minutes and is once again set to start against Brazil this evening (8pm).

Ex-Chelsea winger Pat Nevin is excited by the amount of young English players coming through at his former club.

But he claims they may have to keep go out on-loan to prove how good they are, like Loftus-Cheek and Tammy Abraham, who is at Swansea and also made his England debut against the world champions.

“The next group looks like a bunch for Chelsea doesn’t it and they’re all beginning to get opportunities now,” Nevin told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“They’re getting games, Loftus-Cheek will get a game when he’s gone out on-loan, Tammy Abraham will get a game out on-loan. It may well be that they get enough games.

“So you happen to be playing with Palace, if you’re good enough, it will show through, you’re playing in the Premier League.

“They might not get games for Chelsea.”

Sutton asked Nevin whether Loftus-Cheek would be a regular if he returned to Stamford Bridge next season.

Nevin responded with another question, asking: “Do you think he’s better than Cesc Fabregas?”

Sutton gave a simple response, saying: “Yes I do.”

Chelsea news: Cesc Fabregas still haunted by Blues' dire 2015/16 season https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-news-cesc-fabregas-still-haunted-by-blues-dire-201516-season/ https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-news-cesc-fabregas-still-haunted-by-blues-dire-201516-season/#respond Fri, 03 Nov 2017 01:47:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chelsea-news-cesc-fabregas-still-haunted-by-blues-dire-201516-season/

The runaway champions of last season are already nine points adrift of Manchester City and the 3-0 embarrassment against Roma was their third defeat in seven games.

Heading into tomorrow’s showdown with Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United, parallels are already being drawn with the capitulation that led to the sacking two seasons ago of the Special One six months after winning the title.

And Fabregas, one of the main targets for the fans’ frustration, is still at pains to work out what went wrong that time.

“I still wonder myself because it was such a shame,” he said. “You go to bed sometimes and you think of many things and sometimes you cannot sleep.

“Still sometimes it bothers me because I could look from the outside as a fan and think, ‘These guys are not even trying’. But we just forgot to play football.

“You felt that those six months we were nowhere close to what we really were just a few months before. But it happened and I felt bad for it.”

Fingers have been pointed this time round at the harsh training regime implemented by Antonio Conte, and while Fabregas used his interview on BBC’s Premier League Show to refute that point blank, he did admit the “Italian” fixation with fitness is draining with a congested fixture schedule.

“When you have the whole week to train, his methods and those of the fitness coach have a [certain] mentality,” Fabregas said. “It is a very Italian mentality – we have to run and be fit and recover well.

“But this year, because of the Champions League, we are not having that much time because every three days you are playing.

“You cannot play on the Wednesday and the Saturday and then the Thursday. You cannot run – it’s impossible. You need to recover and get back well for the weekend.”

Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge is hardly likely to soothe tensions around the current regime, especially as Fabregas freely admits his best times as a player came under the Portuguese.

“With Mourinho I had an incredible year in my first season – it was one of the best seasons of my career,” he said.

“We still talk today. He is probably the manager that I have had the best feeling and connection for. Apart from Arsene Wenger, the one I have the most contact with is Jose.”

Manchester United beat Arsenal 2-0 in the clash in 2004 which sparked and infamous brawl in the tunnel after the final whistle.

The game ended the Gunners’ historic 49-match unbeaten run and a controversial Wayne Rooney penalty led to things boiling over.

Sir Alex Ferguson documented the incident in his 2013 autobiography, claiming he had been covered in chicken pizza by Cesc Fabregas.

And the 30-year-old has finally admitted it was him who threw the first slice during the post-match fracas.

When asked if he was the culprit, Fabregas told Sky Sports quiz show A League of their Own: “Yes!

“Martin Keown is a liar because I saw him in front of me just, like, punching people so he didn’t see anything.

“All of a sudden, I heard noises and I thought what’s happening?

“So I go out with my slice of pizza and I saw Sol Campbell, Rio Ferdinand, Martin Keown – everyone pushing each other.

“I was like I want to get in but I don’t know how to and I threw, ‘peeew’ just threw it.

“Once I saw it was hitting, like, who it was hitting, which I didn’t mean… I apologise Sir Alex, really didn’t mean to do that”

In his autobiography, Ferguson wrote about the incident: “The next thing I knew I had pizza all over me.

“We put food into the away dressing room after every game. Pizza, chicken. Most clubs do it. Arsenal’s food was the best.

“They say it was Cesc Fabregas who threw the pizza at me but to this day, I have no idea who the culprit was.”

Cesc Fabregas is Chelsea’s big weakness, if he plays they are vulnerable – Stewart Robson https://briefnews.eu/cesc-fabregas-is-chelseas-big-weakness-if-he-plays-they-are-vulnerable-stewart-robson/ https://briefnews.eu/cesc-fabregas-is-chelseas-big-weakness-if-he-plays-they-are-vulnerable-stewart-robson/#respond Tue, 15 Aug 2017 06:56:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cesc-fabregas-is-chelseas-big-weakness-if-he-plays-they-are-vulnerable-stewart-robson/

Fabregas was sent off as Chelsea lost their opening Premier League game 3-2 at home to Burnley.

The ex-Arsenal star struggled to impose himself on the game and angered manager Antonio Conte by becoming the second Chelsea player to see red on Saturday.

And Conte can not afford to play Fabregas alongside N’Golo Kante as a midfield duo if he wants to succeed this season – says Robson.

“Cesc Fabregas playing in a two in midfield is not athletic enough and Chelsea are going to be caught time and time again on the counter attack if Fabregas plays alongside Kante,” he told The Times’ The Game podcast.

“You can’t expect Kante to do all the running for him. You’ve got to have somebody in there that can defend much better and get around the field.

“That’s gonna be their weakness, all the time they’ve got Fabregas in the side they will be vulnerable.”

Podcast host Gabriele Marcotti then quipped: “Unless of course they play a midfield three.”

To which Robson agreed: “Of course, yeah.”

But the 52-year-old was not surprised Chelsea fell to defeat in their first match against the Clarets.

“I’m not overly surprised having seen them in pre-season,” he added.

“Having seen them in the Community Shield at Wembley and the FA Cup final as well.

“Last season they were really good defensively and I think they’ve become complacent.

“I’ve looked at David Luiz over pre-season and the last few games and he looks like a player who’s not alert, no alive, not defending with urgency.

“I would say the same about Gary Cahill.”

Cesc Fabregas: I disliked John Terry when I was at Arsenal https://briefnews.eu/cesc-fabregas-i-disliked-john-terry-when-i-was-at-arsenal/ https://briefnews.eu/cesc-fabregas-i-disliked-john-terry-when-i-was-at-arsenal/#respond Mon, 17 Jul 2017 21:33:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cesc-fabregas-i-disliked-john-terry-when-i-was-at-arsenal/

Fabregas was part of the Arsenal team which was regularly thwarted by Terry’s Chelsea between 2005 and 2011.

But Fabregas left the Gunners to join Barcelona before returning to the Premier League in 2014 to play alongside Terry at Stamford Bridge and together they won the league twice and the League Cup in three years.

At the end of last season Terry was released by Chelsea after 717 appearances in 19 seasons for the club and joined Championship side Aston Villa.

And speaking in a special Sky Sports show reflecting on Chelsea’s title winning campaign, Fabregas paid tribute to Terry and revealed how he felt about the 36-year-old in the past.

He told Sky Sports: “He is the type of player that I had many battles with.

“I disliked him very much at some point playing for Arsenal, we had a lot of confrontations, but one thing I always had for him was respect.”

In the documentary, Blues boss Antonio Conte thanked Terry for his service.

He said: “I think it was maybe the most difficult season for him, for a lot of reasons.

“He showed to be before a great man and then a great player. He showed he will always be a great captain for this team and I have to tell him a big, big, big thanks.”

The striker is pushing for a return to the La Liga side after three years at Stamford Bridge.

Conte informed the Spain international by text he is not in his plans for next term.

And that has seen their relationship deteriorate further after a troubled year together.

Despite Chelsea’s title success, Conte and Costa clashed during the season.

The situation is not going to be resolved, leaving Chelsea looking to offload the 28-year-old as soon as possible.

Costa, though, has his heart set on going back to Atletico, and talks are ongoing between the teams even with the Spanish side’s transfer ban complicating matters.

Chelsea have allowed Costa to miss the squad’s pre-season tour to the Far East.

And he took to Instagram to demonstrate his love for Atletico and anger with Conte.

Diego Costa posted a live story showing him dancing at a party while wearing an Atletico shirt.

Chelsea team-mate Cesc Fabregas wrote a comment on the video alongisde a laughing emoji saying: “Hahaha”.

In a dig at his current boss, Costa replied: “Give Conte a hug”.

The Chelsea ace is still on holiday in Lagarto in Brazil, and clearly he has no intention of reuniting with the Italian manager.

Costa, Conte, Chelsea and Atletico will all hope they can come to an agreement over a transfer as soon as possible.

Chelsea v Watford match reportEPA

Chelsea left it late to beat Watford

That is John Terry at Chelsea. This was their Stamford Bridge celebration party for winning the title last week, and the 36 year old, on his way out at the end of the season, was playing his first game since September.

Of course it all turned out to be about him. He scores one goal and 35 seconds later hands Watford’s Etienne Capoue an equaliser. Throughout his career stuff has happened around Terry, good and bad. It still does.

The fans duly celebrated as Chelsea just about won, the goals coming from Cesar Azpilicuieta, Michy Batshauyi and Cesc Fabregas, two minutes from the end, the Hornets netting again via Darryl Janmaat and Stefano Okaka.

At the final whistle the fireworks went off, the tickertape streamers poured down from the stands, and the old anthem “Blue is the colour” rang out as Terry and the players did a lap of honour, manager Antonio Conte wearing a comedy crown.

The ‘Home of the Champions’ signs with letters 20 foot high had been draped over the outside of Stamford Bridge as the fans arrived.

There was a slight hitch as a fire alarm went off at 5.30pm and the whole ground had to be evacuated before the teams arrived, but there wasn’t much that was going to spoil the party.

Chelsea’s players had not left the Hawthorns until 12.30am on Friday night, after celebrating with beer and champagne in the dressing rooms, so maybe that explained the nine changes Conte made.

Diego Costa was waving fire extinguishers around at one point that night. Maybe it explained this defensive performance as well. One of those changes saw Terry make his first start in the Premier League since September 11.

John Terry scored the opener for Chelsea

The Chelsea captain, who will depart in the summer after 22 years at the club, said in the programme before his 716th game : “I can’t tell you how important it is to me to have the chance to celebrate my fifth title at the end of my last season as a Chelsea player.

“It’s a dream ending for me. If I could written my story as a 14 year old when I signed on the pitch this would have been it.”

“It has been a brilliant experience for me to work with such a great coach as Antonio in my final year. These will be my last two home games and it’s going to be emotional for me.”

Sunderland on Sunday will be the Terry swansong.

So relaxed was it all that Terry even interrupted his warm up to hug former manager Gianluca Vialli on the touchline. And at half time Costa nipped into the press room to sample the cheese board. Dull it wasn’t.

The Hornets gave Chelsea a guard of honour as they came out, led by Terry. You know who kicked it all off, of course. Watford failed to clear a corner and Terry reacted first to stab the ball in off the post for his 67th goal for the club.

His joy though lasted only 35 seconds. Watford went straight back up the other end and as Terry tried to nod the ball back to Asmir Begovic, he only succeeded in heading it to Etienne Capoue, who nodded in. Oops.

But no matter. Watford failed to clear another corner, the ball flew to Cesar Azpilicueta, and the Spaniard buried his drive.

Chelsea went further ahead when Nathan Ake neatly set up Batshuayi for his second goal in four days. With West Ham interested in signing him on loan, it was a moment that might well have saved the young Belgian’s Chelsea career.

Within two minutes Watford were back in it again, as Daryl Janmaat cracked a glorious shot into the top corner. And out of nowhere the Hornets were level, when Kurt Zouma failed to clear, and substitute Stefano Okaka rifled home.

There was still time for one last dancefloor pleaser though, as Willian set up Cesc Fabregas, and he rattled home Chelsea’s winner, two minutes from the end. That bloke was still standing at the end, by the way.
