Google has removed browser extensions with more than 1.4 million downloads from the Chrome Web Store after third-party researchers reported they were surreptitiously tracking users’ browsing history and inserting tracking code into specific ecommerce sites they visited.
The five extensions flagged by McAfee purport to offer various services, including the ability to stream Netflix videos to groups of people, take screenshots, and automatically find and apply coupon codes. Behind the scenes, company researchers said, the extensions kept a running list of each site a user visited and took additional actions when users landed on specific sites.
The extensions sent the name of each site visited to the developer-designated site d.langhort.com, along with a unique identifier and the country, city, and zip code of the visiting device. If the site visited matched a list of ecommerce sites, the developer domain instructed the extensions to insert JavaScript into the visited page. The code modified the cookies for the site so that the extension authors receive affiliate payment for any items purchased.

Criminals infected more than 100,000 computers with browser extensions that stole login credentials, surreptitiously mined cryptocurrencies, and engaged in click fraud. The malicious extensions were hosted in Google’s official Chrome Web Store.
The scam was active since at least March with seven malicious extensions known so far, researchers with security firm Radware reported Thursday. Google’s security team removed five of the extensions on its own and removed two more after Radware reported them. In all, the malicious add-ons infected more than 100,000 users, at least one inside a “well-protected network” of an unnamed global manufacturing firm, Radware said.
Over the past eight months, malicious Chrome extensions have proved to be an Achilles’ heel for the Internet’s most widely used and arguably most secure browser. Last August, lax rules for securing extension-developer accounts led to the compromise of two extensions installed on millions of computers. In two separate incidents in January, researchers found at least five malicious extensions installed more than 500,000 times. Two weeks ago, Trend Micro documented the return of FacexWorm, a malicious extension that was first spotted seven months earlier.

Google today launched Chrome 65 for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android. Additions in this release include Material Design changes and new developer features. You can update to the latest version now using the browser’s built-in silent updater or download it directly from google.com/chrome.
With over 1 billion users, Chrome is both a browser and a major platform that web developers have to consider. In fact, with Chrome’s regular additions and changes, developers have to keep up to ensure they are taking advantage of everything available.
Chrome 65 comes with a few visual changes. The most obvious is related to Google’s Material Design mantra. The extensions page has been completely reamped to follow it:

Chrome will soon also be getting updated Material design dialogues. You can test out the changes yourself by enabling the flag #secondary-ui-md in chrome://flags, or just wait until it launches in Chrome 66.
Next on the visual changes are favicons that appear next to website addresses in omnibox suggestions. This is supposed to make it easier to identify websites:

I say “supposed to” as I couldn’t get this feature to work. My dropdown menu is still full of search icon and document icons. Your mileage will vary, and this tweak will likely take a while to roll out completely.
Next up, Chrome 65 replaces the Email Page Location link in Chrome for Mac’s File menu with a Share submenu. As you might expect, Mac users can use this submenu to share the URL of a current tab via installed macOS Share Extensions.
Speaking of Macs, Chrome 65 is also the last release for OS X 10.9 users. Chrome 66 will require OS X 10.10 or later.
But one of the biggest improvements to Chrome still hasn’t arrived. Chrome 64 was supposed to stop sites from autoplaying content with sound. The feature was not turned on for that release and still has not been turned on today with Chrome 65’s launch, even though it does work in non-stable versions.
Chrome 64 included an option to completely disable audio for whole sites, which was originally scheduled for Chrome 63. Google appears to be running behind schedule — we’ll let you know when Chrome disables all autoplaying content with sound.
Moving on to developer features, Chrome 65 includes the CSS Paint API, which allows developers to programmatically generate an image, and the
Server Timing API, which allows web servers to provide performance timing information via HTTP headers. At the time of publishing, Google did not share any major changes for end users, but we’ll update you if that changes.
The CSS Paint API, also known as CSS Custom Paint, means developers can now use the new paint() function to reference a paint worklet that will draw the image. Google suggests using the API to make the DOM tree smaller and transferring significantly less data compared to an image.

The Server Timing API gives developers a more complete performance picture that includes the speed of both the client and the server. Until now, developers interested in measuring the performance of their web applications could use the Navigation Timing and Resource Timing APIs to request timing data for the document and its resources, but had no way to query the server for details about its response time to the client.
Developers will also want to know that Chrome 65 includes an update to the V8 JavaScript engine: version 6.5. The release includes an untrusted code mode, support of streaming compilation for WebAssembly code, and speed improvements. Check out the full list of changes for more information.
Other developer features in this release (some are mobile-specific):

Chrome 65 also implements 45 security fixes. The following ones were found by external researchers:
Google thus spent at least $ 34,500 in bug bounties for this release. As always, the security fixes alone should be enough incentive for you to upgrade.
Google releases a new version of its browser every six weeks or so. Chrome 66 will arrive by mid-April.
Chrome 65 for Android was also released today with the following changelog:
That update is rolling out gradually over the next few weeks via Google Play.

A two-year budget deal was approved by the House and the Senate this morning and signed by President Trump a few hours later. The budget (PDF) included a slew of tax credit extensions that will affect how the energy industry plans its next two years.
Most notably, the deal extended a $ 0.018 per-kWh credit for nuclear power plants over 6,000MW—a tax credit that is primarily going to benefit one project in the US. That project is the construction of two new reactors at the Georgia Vogtle nuclear power plant. Vogtle’s future was uncertain last year after reactor designer Westinghouse went bankrupt. The plant’s reactors, which are now billions of dollars over budget, are not expected to be in service until 2021 and 2022 at the earliest. Before this budget deal, new nuclear plants would have had to be in operation before 2020 to take advantage of a key federal tax credit.
Georgia’s public utilities commission approved a deal to move forward with the project in December, provided the federal government extend the in-operation date for the federal tax credit. With this morning’s budget deal, it seems that Vogtle will go ahead, unlike its sibling site in South Carolina, whose parent company is planning to shut it down and explore a merger with energy company Dominion.

Researchers have uncovered four malicious extensions with more than 500,000 combined downloads from the Google Chrome Web Store, a finding that highlights a key weakness in what’s widely considered to be the Internet’s most secure browser. Google has since removed the extensions.
Researchers from security firm ICEBRG stumbled on the find after detecting a suspicious spike in outbound network traffic coming from a customer workstation. They soon discovered it was generated by a Chrome extension called HTTP Request Header as it used the infected machine to surreptitiously visit advertising-related Web links. The researchers later discovered three other Chrome extensions—Nyoogle, Stickies, and Lite Bookmarks—that did much the same thing. ICEBRG suspects the extensions were part of a click-fraud scam that generated revenue from per-click rewards. But the researchers warned that the malicious add-ons could just as easily have been used to spy on the people or organizations who installed them.
“In this case, the inherent trust of third-party Google extensions, and accepted risk of user control over these extensions, allowed an expansive fraud campaign to succeed,” ICEBRG researchers wrote in a report published Friday. “In the hands of a sophisticated threat actor, the same tool and technique could have enabled a beachhead into target networks.”

Edge first received support for extensions as part of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update released in August 2016. More than a year has passed since then, and Microsoft is offering an update on the state of Edge extensions.
Edge started out with 13 extensions when it first got the ability to support them: AdBlock, Adblock Plus, Amazon Assistant, Evernote Web Clipper, LastPass, Mouse Gestures, Office Online, OneNote Web Clipper, Page Analyzer, Pinterest Save Button, Reddit Enhancement Suite, Save to Pocket and Translator for Microsoft Edge. 13 months later, there are now “over 70 extensions worldwide” in the Windows Store.
I checked this “over 70” number and at least on my computer, it turned out to be exactly 70. Here they are:

Ratings range from two stars to a perfect five stars. All of the extensions are either completely free or can be at least installed for free.
Microsoft wants you to know that this slow growth is deliberate. The explanation is worth reproducing in full:
We have taken a purposefully metered approach as we onboard new extensions. Extensions are one of the most substantial features in a new browser, and we have a high bar for quality. Because extensions interact so closely with the browser, we have been very attuned to the security, performance, and reliability of Microsoft Edge with these extensions enabled. Starting with a small group of the most popularly requested extensions has allowed us to mature our extension ecosystem as alongside our extension platform, as well as to build a smooth onboarding experience for developers over time.
As we’ve continued to work on the extensions platform, we sometimes get questions asking why the list of extensions isn’t growing faster. What gives?
We are extremely sensitive to the potential impact of extensions on your browsing experience and want to make sure that the extensions we do allow are high-quality and trustworthy. We want Microsoft Edge to be your favorite browser, with the fundamentals you expect – speed, power efficiency, reliability, security. Poorly written or even malicious add-ons for browsers remain a potential source of privacy, security, reliability and performance issues, even today. We want users to be confident that they can trust extensions in Microsoft to operate as expected. As such, we continue to evaluate each extension submission to ensure that it will bring value to our users and support our goals for a healthy ecosystem.
While I’m sure Microsoft cares about Edge extension security, the reality is that Microsoft hasn’t managed to get developers excited about its platform. It’s unfortunate the company didn’t have extensions available when Edge launched — that would have been the time to get developers on board.
Still, for most users this is enough. If you only use one or two popular Chrome extensions of Firefox add-ons, chances are you can use the equivalent extensions on Edge. For anyone else that relies on niche extensions or uses a long list, Edge can’t help.
