The Toronto Maple Leafs put up a franchise-best 49 wins last season, eventually losing in the first round of the playoffs for the second consecutive year, but with a second star lining up at centre next season, they're hoping to shed the title of "talented up-and-comers" in favour of Stanley Cup contenders.
Auston Matthews says the addition of John Tavares, who signed a seven-year contract worth US$ 77 million with his hometown club on July 1, gives the Leaf one of the "premier players in the NHL" and should give the team a massive boost.
"It's obviously exciting for us as players, as teammates, and you get a guy like that — it definitely takes us to the next level," said the 20-year-old at a reception Thursday ahead of teammate Mitch Marner's charity All-Star Invitational.
Matthews can expect his own big payday soon. Sportsnet's Luke Fox reported Thursday that the Leafs and the 20-year-old centre are in talks about a contract extension that will likely pay him upward of $ 80 million US over eight years.
Auston Matthews says contract talks are underway with the Maple Leafs.

Matthews — who put up 34 goals and 63 points in a injury-shortened 2017-18 campaign — said he reached out to Tavares, who was born in the suburb of Mississauga, Ont., and grew up in nearby Oakville, Ont., in effort to help recruit him to Leafs. But he didn't want to overwhelm him as he wrestled with the decision of leaving the New York Islanders, who drafted him first overall in 2009.
"I just wanted to talk to him on the phone briefly and, obviously, let him know we'd love to have him and that he'd be a great fit on the team," he said, noting that they'd met previously at the 2016-17 all-star game.
"And obviously we're extremely happy he decided to sign in Toronto."
With Matthews and Tavares anchoring the 1A and 1B lines, the Leafs have two centres that scored at more than a point-per-game pace last season. They also have two-way centre Nazem Kadri, who is coming off a second consecutive season with 50-plus points.
"It gives a lot of depth, obviously, when you've got three guys with that amount of talent, with that amount of skill, and I think it causes a lot of matchup problems for the other teams," said Matthews.

That kind of firepower up the middle has been key to the past few Stanley Cup winners as the defending champion Washington Capitals boast Evgeny Kuznetsov and Nicklas Backstrom, while the Pittsburgh Penguins, who won back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017, have Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.
Marner, who coach Mike Babock has said is likely to slot in next to Tavares, echoed Matthews' sentiments.
"It's massive. Our centreman depth is incredible. We're going to be a very hard team to beat in the circle and that's obviously exciting," said the 21-year-old, who is coming off a 69-point season.

"Puck possession is massive in the NHL and starting off the draws is a big part of that."
The play-making winger said should he end up riding shot gun next to the five-time all-star Tavares he doesn't believe he will have to change his game, but he likely will have to be prepared to fire at will.
"He can pass and shoot, so I think it'll work for both of us, but I think from my standpoint, just be ready to shoot more. I know he can make very good plays as well and makes people around him open. I think we'll mesh well and I'm excited for it."
Marner said he the Leafs are still feeling the sting of last spring's first-round exit in seven games at the hands of the Boston Bruins. But he believes the club is ready to be a threat in the post-season.
"I think we have a lot to prove. This year obviously, we were happy going into the playoffs, but back-to-back first-round exits, it's not something we obviously want to keep doing," he said.
"This is the year I think we have to step up to another level and challenge each other. Like I said, we're excited … to get started and get back to work."

Google, Mozilla, and Opera have pulled a browser extension with more than two million downloads after it was caught tracking every website its users visited—and sending the data to a remote server.
The Stylish extension allowed users to customize the look and feel of websites in a variety of ways. Among other things, it could remove clutter such as Facebook or Twitter news feeds, change normal pictures to black-and-white manga images, and change black-on-white site themes to white-on-black themes. Starting this year, Stylish started performing these useful functions at a high price: according to software engineer Robert Heaton, the extension started sending users’ complete browsing activity back to its servers by default, along with a unique identifier that in many cases could be used to correlate email addresses or other Internet attributes belonging to those users.
An updated Stylish privacy policy disclosed that the extension collected browsing histories. The version published in May, for instance, said that the information included “standard web server log information (i.e., web request) as well as data sent in response to that request, such as URL used, Internet Protocol address (trimmed and hashed for anonymization), HTTP referrer, and user agent.” Various articles from January, 2017, also noted the tracking but, citing a new owner of the extension, these articles said it would be anonymous. (This despite the fact that many URLs, particularly when stored in large quantities over a long period of time, can make it painfully obvious which individual is viewing them.)

The Ottawa Senators have given interested teams permission to negotiate a contract extension with superstar defenceman Erik Karlsson, according to Larry Brooks of the New York Post.
Karlsson, who is a free agent at the end of the 2018-19 season, has been the target of trade speculation dating back to last year and this moves the team one step closer to dealing the former Norris Trophy winner.
Senators have given interested teams permission to talk contract extension with Karlsson. Sounds as if he is looking for Doughty deal (8×11)
—@NYP_Brooksie
Reports Sunday stated the Senators had offered Karlsson an extension, something that was promised months ago. No details were released on what that offer was, but many believe Karlsson is seeking something close to what the Los Angeles Kings just gave Drew Doughty (eight years, $ 88 million US).
"We don't really want to talk about roster players, contract negotiations, trades, all these things, but I think we owe it to our fans and we made a promise at the town hall that we would make a contract offer to Erik Karlsson and we've done so," Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said Sunday. "We're not going to talk any more about it, but we talked about it previously and that's about all we're going to say on the subject."
The relationship between Karlsson and the Senators has been waning for months, coming to a head in June when reports came out about former teammate Mike Hoffman's fiancee harassing Karlsson's wife Melinda. Hoffman was traded shortly after.
Karlsson, who this past season produced 62 points in 71 games, is set to count $ 6.5 million against the cap in the final year of his deal.
The 28-year-old has won the Norris trophy as the league's best defenceman twice (2011-12, 2014-15).

Defenceman Drew Doughty has agreed to an eight-year, $ 88 million US contract extension through the 2026-27 season to stay with the Los Angeles Kings.
Los Angeles announced the whopping deal Friday for its two-time Stanley Cup-winning cornerstone.
After cracking the Kings' roster as an 18-year-old, Doughty has been among the NHL's top defencemen throughout a 10-year career spent entirely with the Kings.
He won the Norris Trophy as the league's best defenceman in 2016. As an aggressive, skilled two-way blueliner, he has been a finalist for the award in three other seasons — including 2017-18, when he scored a career-high 60 points while playing in all 82 games for the fourth consecutive season.
Doughty played a major role in the Kings' Stanley Cup triumphs in 2012 and 2014, and he also has two Olympic gold medals from playing for Canada.
"Drew Doughty is one of the best defencemen in the world, and we are obviously excited to have reached this point in the process in which he has committed to the Kings long-term," Kings general manager Rob Blake said.
He still has one year left on an eight-year, $ 56 million contract signed in September 2011. Doughty can't formally sign the new deal until July 1, when he will be one year away from free agency.
By the time his new deal ends, Doughty will be 37 years old. Neither the Kings nor Doughty seriously expected the defenceman to leave his adopted home in free agency next year. He grew up a Kings fan in southern Ontario, and he was thrilled when Los Angeles chose him with the second overall pick in 2008.
Doughty is second among Kings defencemen in career goals (102), assists (320) and points (422), trailing only Blake in every category. He also has appeared in 84 playoff games, scoring 51 points.
The 28-year-old Doughty's new contract has the NHL's highest average annual value among defencemen, although it could be surpassed by the next contract for Ottawa's Erik Karlsson, whose current contract expires in 2019.
Los Angeles' core of elite veterans is all signed to long-term contracts through at least the next three seasons. Those players include captain Anze Kopitar, goalie Jonathan Quick, Dustin Brown, Jeff Carter, Alec Martinez, Dion Phaneuf and newcomer Ilya Kovalchuk, who signed with the Kings earlier this week.

After researching more than a dozen different options, reviewing National Electrical Code guidelines, talking with safety-testing experts at UL, and cutting apart nine cords to inspect their quality, we recommend the 50-ft Voltec Yellow Outdoor Extension Cord to most people because it has the most durable strain-relief neck, the strongest and smoothest connection, and a rugged outer jacket—all of which should last for years. It’s available in 25-foot and 100-foot lengths as well.
You could easily head to the hardware store and grab the cheapest extension cord in the length you need, but not all cords are created equal, nor are they all created for the same tasks. We tend not to think of extension cords as safety devices, but watching an overloaded cord burst into flames really drives that point home. Extension cords are the spark for 3,300 home fires every year in the US, along with 270 injuries and 50 fatalities, according to the Electrical Safety Foundation International and its stats from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The most versatile cords are stamped with a W (in a rating that looks something like ‘SJTW’) to signify that the jacket is moisture and UV-light resistant. That means it’s rated for use in a sunny backyard or a damp basement. Because a well-cared-for extension cord should last years, through any type of household use, all of our top picks that are 25 feet or longer are either W-rated or otherwise moisture and UV resistant.

Any cord that’s been tested and marked by UL or Intertek (ETL Listed) should perform to its rating when it’s brand-new. But that doesn’t mean that it’s a good value, or that it’s built well enough to handle abuse for years on end. So once we were satisfied with the ratings and cost per foot of models—our choices ranged from 50¢ per foot to $ 1.26 per foot, though some competitors sold for up to $ 2 per foot—from multiple retailers, we examined the construction of each cord relative to one another to find the details that set the best ones apart.
Our first task was cutting apart each of our brand-new cords and measuring each detail. We also made note of how the receiving end of the extension cord accepted a plug. The receptacles on some cords are too tight and make it hard to properly seat a plug. Any gaps could lead to water infiltration or a possible short (and sparks). Other receptacles can be too loose, allowing a plug to fall or pull out too easily, leading to the same problem.
A good strain-relief neck connection between the plug and the cord prevents the two parts from pulling away and exposing the wiring inside.

If you get only one extension cord, get the Voltec Industries 50-ft Yellow Outdoor Extension Cord. It’s not much more expensive than the cords you’ll find in a store, but it blows them away in terms of cable quality, connector durability, and most notably, the connection fit. We think 50 feet is a good catchall size, as it’s enough to get around a two-car garage, and feed power from one room to another. It’s also not as heavy, cumbersome, or expensive as a 100-foot cord. The biggest downside to the Voltec cord is that the huge, durable connector might not fit into tight receptacles—particularly on yard equipment like leaf blowers or hedge trimmers.
Cutting, measuring, and recording data points on a couple handfuls of extension cords made for a pretty dull afternoon until we came across this Voltec cord. We plugged our test cable into it to evaluate the connection, and it was as if triumphant music burst through the clouds. It didn’t get (dangerously) stuck halfway in, requiring a jab to seat it completely. It didn’t fall out when exposed to a light breeze. It didn’t grind into place. The receptacle on this cord is like a velvety vise; after testing so many cheap connections, this one stood out as a product designed and made with care.

Moving from the connector to the cable, the Voltec cord had the longest, most durable strain-relief neck of any we examined.

If you want to save a few bucks but still want a quality extension cord, the US Wire 740XX series of cords is almost as good as our top pick from Voltec. The most obvious sacrifice is the less robust strain-relief neck. Though the connector itself is lighted from within and solid, just like on the Voltec, the neck of the cord isn’t any longer than the average cord. Because this is an obvious point of failure, we think the Voltec is worth the slightly higher price in most cases. If you’ll be using your cord with outdoor equipment that has a pigtail-type plug, the US Wire cord is more likely to work for you. Other than the strain relief, the US Wire cord is just as durable.

Our top pick and runner-up are the best values we could find, but they might not be easy to find in a local brick-and-mortar store. If you need an extension cord now—as in, you’re about to drive to a store—the best you can reliably find are the yellow Utilitech Pro cords available at Lowe’s. To be clear, this really isn’t our favorite cord, as it comes up short on most comparisons with both our top pick and runner-up, and it will generally cost a little more, too. But weirdly, major hardware stores don’t stock very good extension cords at competitive prices. The limited strain relief seems like the most obvious point of failure for these cords. Considering they cost more than both our top picks, we’d pick this one up only if we needed to have an extension cord today.

Using an indoor cord correctly is arguably more important than which one you buy, as long as it’s made by a reputable company. Indoor cords are meant only for simple, low-power uses like reaching a lamp on your side table or plugging in a phone charger. The GE Wall Hugger Extension Cord does have two advantages to the cheap, nameless cords that you’ll find in all corners of the Internet and discount stores. First, the flat plug is safer and less likely to get knocked out when plugged in behind furniture, and second, it’s properly tested and rated.

The Pirate Bay is one of the most popular destinations for torrent users online, holding a place amongst the 100 most-visited websites worldwide.
The torrent repository achieved an infamous reputation by hosting torrent files which allowed users to download copyrighted material for free without permission from the rightsholders.
There is little vetting when it comes to torrent files on the platform.
As a result, in the past, cybercriminals have been able to leverage torrents to spread malware, as well as fraudulent files.
Cybersecurity company Siege CEO Jason Syversen told Consumer Reports that there are “very real technical concerns” about downloading content via torrents.
Syversen said: “There are some very real technical concerns.
“You’re dealing with these shady third-party sites, so it’s a great opportunity for people to insert malware into the BitTorrent client as well as transferring files with malicious content.”
Thankfully, an enterprising Reddit user has created a script to highlight – and hide – fake or fraudulent torrents on The Pirate Bay.
The Redditor, known as nicobelic, writes: “One of the things I’ve noticed after having to use Pirate Bay for a while, is the significant amount of fake torrents.
“For example if you browse the HD Movies section and sort by seeds, (depending on when their bot ran) you’ll see a ton of untrusted torrents with an unrealistic amount of seeds.
“The script has a couple options to get rid of these.
“The default behaviour is to hide untrusted torrents (torrents without the little pink or green skulls) if they have more than 1000 seeds.”
The Google Chrome browser add-on also allows users to “hide porn, french torrents, as well as cams and telesyncs”.
Chrome users can download the extension for free on the Web Store.
For those who don’t know, torrent files are not in and of themselves intrinsically illegally.
But those used to download copyrighted content for free without the permission of the rights holders undeniably are.
Torrents do not contain the file you wish to download, but instead, enables your computer to download the requested data in small chunks from a network of online participants.
Popular torrent websites like Kickass Torrents, ExtraTorrent and Torrentz.eu have all shutdown within the last year.
The Pirate Bay – the most well-known example of a torrent repository – is currently banned in the UK by most Internet Service Providers, or ISPs.
Those who download copyrighted content using a torrent site might find themselves the recipient of a warning letter from their broadband provider.
